Consumer acceptance of gene-editing technologies is a major hurdle to technology use, and opposition to gene-editing technologies may accompany a lack of knowledge by consumers. The purpose of this mixed-method study was to describe which method of instruction, behaviorism or constructivism, consumers preferred when learning about gene-editing and determine which method resulted in the highest amount of knowledge gained. Data were collected from eight focus groups across the country through a multiple-choice knowledge scale and open-ended questions. The qualitative results indicated that the participants preferred the behaviorism style over constructivist style due to the clarity of materials, the efficiency of time, and individual work. A large portion of participants felt the exposure to both teaching methods gave them more knowledge, that the information was interesting, and that they wanted more information. The quantitative results indicated that the behaviorist teaching method scores were significantly higher than the constructivist style of teaching. We recommend that practitioners align the appropriate teaching method with the amount of time allowed for the lesson, to use a variety of strategies when using behaviorist methods, and provide guidance and structure when using constructivist methods.

A novel exoskeleton robotic system was developed to assist stair climbing. This active demonstrator consists of a motor with a cable system, various sensors, and a control system with a power supply. The objective of this preliminary study is a biomechanical evaluation of the novel system to determine its effectiveness in use. For this purpose, three test persons were biomechanically investigated, who performed stair ascents and descents with and without the exoskeleton. Kinematics, kinetics, and muscle activity of the knee extensors were measured. The measured data were biomechanically simulated in order to evaluate the characteristics of joint angles, moments, and reaction forces. The results show that the new exoskeleton assists both the ascent and the descent according to the measured surface electromyography (sEMG) signals, as the knee extensors are relieved by an average of 19.3%. In addition, differences in the interaction between the test persons and the system were found. This could be due to a slightly different operation of the assisting force or to the different influence of the system on the kinematics of the users.

The following article summarizes United States Patent Application No. US20180052155A1, titled ‘Assay Devices and Methods’ (filed 16 August 2016, published 22 February 2018). While lateral flow assays (LFAs) have revolutionized point-of-care diagnostics by enabling accurate, inexpensive, and rapid detection of biomarkers, they typically do not provide quantitative results. Hence, there is a significant need for quantitative assays at the point of care. This patent summary describes a novel method of chronometric biomarker quantitation via enzymatic degradation of a metastable gelatin-based biomatrix, principally suited for use in paper-based microfluidic devices (microPADs). This new quantitation mechanism was designed to meet the ASSURED criteria for point-of-care diagnostic devices laid forth by the World Health Organization and may ultimately provide increased access to healthcare, at a significantly reduced cost, around the world.

Although intravenous administration of contrast media may trigger a variety of adverse reactions, sedated patients undergoing computed tomography (CT) scanning usually are not able to report their symptoms, which may delay detection of adverse reactions. Furthermore, changes in vital signs cannot be typically measured during mobile CT scanning, which worsens the situation. We aimed to characterize contrast-related hemodynamic changes that occur during mobile CT scanning and predict sudden hypotension based on subtle but robust changes in the electrocardiogram (ECG). We analyzed the digitized hemodynamic data of 20 consecutive patients who underwent clipping of a cerebral artery aneurysm and contrast-enhanced CT scanning following the surgical procedure. Hemodynamic variables, including ECG findings, invasive blood pressure (BP), pulse oximetry results, capnography findings, cardiac output, and systemic vascular resistance, were monitored simultaneously. We measured morphological changes in ECG-derived parameters, including the R–R interval, ST height, and QRS R-amplitude, on a beat-to-beat basis, and evaluated the correlation between those parameters and hemodynamic changes. After the radiocontrast injection, systolic BP decreased by a median 53 mmHg from baseline and spontaneously recovered after 63 ± 19 s. An increase in QRS R-amplitude (median 0.43 mV) occurred 25 ± 10 s before hypotension developed. The receiver operating characteristic curve showed that a 16% increase in QRS R-amplitude can predict a decrease in systolic BP of >25% (area under the curve 0.852). Increased cardiac output (median delta 2.7 L/min from baseline) and decreased systemic vascular resistance (median delta 857 dyn·s/cm5 from baseline) were also observed during hypotension. During mobile CT scanning, profound but transient hypotension can be observed, associated with decreased vascular resistance. Augmentation of QRS R-amplitude from an ECG represents a sensitive surrogate for onset of a hypotensive episode after contrast injection, thereby serving as a simple and continuous noninvasive hemodynamic monitoring tool.

The charged environment within a dense plasma leads to the phenomenon of ionization-potential depression (IPD) for ions embedded in the plasma. Accurate predictions of the IPD effect are of crucial importance for modeling atomic processes occurring within dense plasmas. Several theoretical models have been developed to describe the IPD effect, with frequently discrepant predictions. Only recently, first experiments on IPD in Al plasma have been performed with an x-ray free-electron laser, where their results were found to be in disagreement with the widely used IPD model by Stewart and Pyatt. Another experiment on Al, at the Orion laser, showed disagreement with the model by Ecker and Kröll. This controversy shows a strong need for a rigorous and consistent theoretical approach to calculate the IPD effect. Here, we propose such an approach: a two-step Hartree-Fock-Slater model. With this parameter-free model, we can accurately and efficiently describe the experimental Al data and validate the accuracy of standard IPD models. Our model can be a useful tool for calculating atomic properties within dense plasmas with wide-ranging applications to studies on warm dense matter, shock experiments, planetary science, inertial confinement fusion, and nonequilibrium plasmas created with x-ray free-electron lasers.
