There is a long history of institutional and interpersonal stigma, violence, and oppression of sexual and gender minority (SGM) individuals in the United States and around the world. Structural and sociocultural factors have served to promote and justify criminalization, discrimination, and violence targeting SGM groups. This commentary provides a brief chronological summary of laws and policies that served to pathologize, oppress, and justify violence and discrimination; the evolution of academic study and understanding; activism aimed at changing laws, questioning pathologizing assumptions and practices, and protecting human rights; current challenges; and recommendations for policy, research, and practice. This commentary pays particular attention to the roles the Global Alliance for Behavioral Health and Social Justice and its journal, American Journal of Orthopsychiatry, have played to advocate for full recognition of the human rights of SGM individuals. Public Policy Relevance Statement: There is a long history of institutional and interpersonal stigma, violence, and oppression of sexual and gender minority (SGM) people. This commentary provides recommendations for promoting the rights and well-being of SGM individuals, with a particular focus on the Global Alliance and the American Journal of Orthopsychiatry. In particular, the commentary recommends strategies for countering anti-SGM propaganda, creating safe and supportive environments for SGM people, and accessing high-quality, culturally, and context appropriate services. This study contributes to the emerging subdiscipline of geography, defined as vegetal geography, expanding beyond Critical Plant Studies’ focus on place-based interactions with and adaptations to human systems and ecologies. In this sense, vegetal geography covers political and cultural ecologies and psychogeography of events, highlighted by the recent pandemic, the ongoing threat of anthropogenic climate change, and the re-emergence of global diseases in recent years amid unrestrained consumerism and human niche constructions. These so-called Anthropocene proliferations tend to ramify the relation of place to organic entanglement with the non-organic, human with the nonhuman, which implicates species trade-offs, uncanny alliances, and affinities, via a series of differential synthesis, borrowing from Deleuze and Guattari, amid increasing climate anomalies. In the process, they engender emergent ecologies where vegetal life, a key Deleuzean concept, provides a critical pivot to interspecies relations in times of crisis and emergency.

The Nazca Ridge (NR) was formed near the interaction of a hotspot mantle plume and an active spreading center. We use active‐source wide‐angle seismic data to obtain 2‐D Vp and Vs tomographic models, and hence the Poisson's ratio (ν) structure beneath the NR. Results show a ∼2 km thick seismic layer 2A with ν values of 0.25–0.32 in the uppermost crust interpreted as pillow basalts with a low degree of fracturing and/or hydrothermal alteration. The 2A/B boundary layer presents ν values of 0.27–0.29 consistent with pillow basalts/sheeted dykes units. A ∼3 km layer 2B overlies a ∼10 km layer 3 with ν values of 0.24–0.3 at the 2/3 boundary layer. The lowermost layer 3 presents ν values of 0.28 ± 0.02 suggesting an increase in Mg content (≥10% wt). The NR crust (∼15 km thick) requires an increment of the asthenospheric mantle potential temperature in ∼100°C formed by passive adiabatic decompression melting. Plain Language Summary: The interaction of a hot mantle plume with an overlying moving oceanic plate results in hotspot volcanic activity, and the formation of large volcanoes (hotspot tracks). This process is enhanced in a setting where the hotspot mantle plume is located near an active spreading center or mid ocean ridge such as the East Pacific Rise or Middle Atlantic Ridge. The Nazca Ridge (NR) is a hotspot track located off South America at present and was formed 30–45 Ma by the interaction of the Easter Island hotspot mantle plume with the Farallon‐Nazca plate near the East Pacific Rise. Our geophysical results show that the NR presents an anomalously thick oceanic crust (∼15 km thick), which is about 2.5 times thicker than normal crust of the Pacific Ocean. The rocks at the base of the crust presents likely an increase in magnesium content. This is consistent with the intrusion of voluminous magmatic material during the interaction of the hotspot plume with the oceanic plate at anomalously high temperatures compared with the surrounding mantle. We study the structure and tectonics of the collision zone between the Nazca Ridge (NR) and the Peruvian margin constrained by seismic, gravimetric, bathymetric, and natural seismological data. The NR was formed in an on‐ridge setting, and it is characterized by a smooth and broad shallow seafloor (swell) with an estimated buoyancy flux of ~7 Mg/s. The seismic results show that the NR hosts an oceanic lower crust 10–14 km thick with velocities of 7.2–7.5 km/s suggesting intrusion of magmatic material from the hot spot plume to the oceanic plate. Our results show evidence for subduction erosion in the frontal part of the margin likely enhanced by the collision of the NR. The ridge‐trench collision zone correlates with the presence of a prominent normal scarp, a narrow continental slope, and (uplifted) shelf. In contrast, adjacent of the collision zone, the slope does not present a topographic scarp and the continental slope and shelf become wider and deeper. Geophysical and geodetic evidence indicate that the collision zone is characterized by low seismic coupling at the plate interface. This is consistent with vigorous subduction erosion enhanced by the subducting NR causing abrasion and increase of fluid pore pressure at the interplate contact. Furthermore, the NR has behaved as a barrier for rupture propagation of megathrust earthquakes (e.g., 1746 Mw 8.6 and 1942 Mw 8.1 events). In contrast, for moderate earthquakes (e.g., 1996 Mw 7.7 and 2011 Mw 6.9 events), the NR has behaved as a seismic asperity nucleating at depths >20 km. This paper reports on a survey of administrators (n = 26) and staff (n = 248) in 10 mental health and 16 substance abuse programs in Los Angeles County providing services to individuals with co-occurring disorders. Although half or more of the administrators and staff reported that their programs had some degree of on-site service integration, there was a lack of agreement within most programs as to the extent of integration. Characteristics of services provided and interactions with other service providers are also examined. Future research is needed regarding the divergent perceptions of administrators and staff and their relationship to treatment outcomes. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

A longitudinal investigation of psychological responses to the September 11, 2001 terrorist attacks was conducted on a U.S. national probability sample. Using an anonymous Web-based survey methodology, data were collected among over 1,900 adults at 2 weeks and 12 months post-9/11 to consider whether direct and proximal exposure were necessary preconditions for high levels of acute and posttraumatic stress symptoms, and whether greater exposure/proximity led to greater traumatic stress symptoms. Results suggest that the requirement of direct and proximal exposure to the attacks and the expectation of a dose-response relationship between exposure and traumatic stress response are myths. This study examined the contribution of individual and family variables to depressive symptoms among youths in a family-centered culture. Participants were 262 Mexican adolescents (mean age = 15.9 years). At the individual level, gender (being female) and higher levels of perceived stressfulness of life events and ruminative coping style were correlated with higher frequency of depressive symptoms. At the family level, higher levels of perceived parental warmth and acceptance and parental monitoring were correlated with lower levels of depressed mood, whereas higher levels of parent-adolescent conflict were associated with greater frequency of depressive symptoms. Regression analyses confirmed our prediction that both individual factors (gender, ruminative coping) and family factors (parental warmth and parental monitoring) would make unique contributions to depressive symptoms. The model comprised of individual and family variables accounted for 50% of the variance in depressed mood. Moreover, parental warmth and acceptance attenuated the impact of ruminative coping style on adolescents' depressive symptomatology. Findings are discussed in relation to previous research on adolescents in another family-centered culture (China), and directions for future research are proposed. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

ABSTRACT INTRODUCTION: In 2009 the World was shocked by the influenza A (H1N1) pandemia. A huge debate has taken place for the convenience of the anti A(H1N1) vaccination in relation to the few clinical trials and the adverse reactions generated by other vaccines produced under the same process. METHODS: Cross-sectional study in students selected by simple sampling and concurrence criteria in the Faculty of Medicine of the Universidad de La Frontera in Temuco, Chile, after the vaccination campaign from April to May 2010. We developed a simple cuestionnaire with obligatory fields of frequent symptoms reported by Sanofi Pasteur: local pain, redness, myalgias, fever, malaise, and an open field to describe any other reaction. Data analysis was performed with Stata 10.0 RESULTS: We surveyed 98 students (15.43%) of the total vaccinated students population. 50% had no symptoms, 40,8% reported swelling in the area, malaise 49%, 20,1 % fever and 26,5% myalgias. Of those with symptoms 88% had one or two symptoms, 12% reported three or more symptoms. DISCUSSION: A high percentage had some adverse reaction, however the most frequent were mild: local swelling and general discomfort. There were only 6% who presented more than 3 symptoms and there were no adverse events requiring hospitalisation. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

Abstract: The present investigation examined the prevalence and abundance of bronchopulmonary nematodes in 213 randomly hunted Iberian ibexes (Capra pyrenaica) (87 females and 126 males) in the Sierra Nevada mountain range in Spain between 2003 and 2006. Post mortem examination revealed an overall prevalence of 72% for adult nematodes (Cystocaulus ocreatus 44%, Muellerius capillaris 44%, Protostrongylus sp. 40%, and Dictyocaulus filaria 4%). The abundances were 13.45±3.97, 5.18±2.49, 6.36±2.16, and 2.27±0.46, respectively. Protostrongylid adults showed similar infection rates, which were statistically different from that of D. filaria. 20% of the examined Iberian ibexes were infected by three protostrongylid nematodes species, 24% of C. pyrenaica were affected by two protostrongylid species, while infestations with only one protostrongylid species were detected in 20% of the examined animals. The overall prevalence of larvae nematodes in the examined animals was 100%, and the overall abundance (number of the first stage larvae per gram) was 86.45±20.63. There was a high correlation between the two sets of data (adults and larvae). Results of the present investigation provided foundation for the effective control of bronchopulmonary nematode infection in Iberian ibex. [Copyright &y& Elsevier]
