Abstract

The influence of vascular endothelial growth factor (VEGF) on the permeability of human endothelial cell monolayers are examined in a well-characterized in vitro system. The objective of the research is to show that VEGF induces hyperpermeability by a direct action on endothelial cells. Results demonstrate that VEGF enhanced endothelial permeability by a direct action on endothelial cells.

Abstract

Experimental studies indicate the necessity for expression of vascular endothelial growth factor (VEGF) and its two receptors flt-1 and KDR in adult kidneys for the development of VEGF during renal organogenesis. Investigation of the glomerular epithelia and peritubular capillaries indicate a coexpression of mRNA of flt-1 and KDR, implying the importance of VEGF in permselectivity and glomerular functions.
