Extant odontocetes (toothed whales) exhibit differences in body size and brain mass, biosonar mode, feeding strategies, and diving and habitat adaptations. Strong selective pressures associated with these factors have likely contributed to the morphological diversification of their skull. Here, we used 3D landmark geometric morphometric data from the skulls of 60 out of ~ 72 extant odontocete species and a well-supported phylogenetic tree to test whether size and shape variation are associated with ecological adaptations at an interspecific scale. Odontocete skull morphology exhibited a significant phylogenetic signal, with skull size showing stronger signal than shape. After accounting for phylogeny, significant associations were detected between skull size and biosonar mode, body length, brain and body mass, maximum and minimum prey size, and maximum peak frequency. Brain mass was also strongly correlated with skull shape together with surface temperature and average and minimum prey size. When asymmetric and symmetric components of shape were analysed separately, a significant correlation was detected between sea surface temperature and both symmetric and asymmetric components of skull shape, and between diving ecology and the asymmetric component. Skull shape variation of odontocetes was strongly influenced by evolutionary allometry but most of the associations with ecological variables were not supported after phylogenetic correction. This suggests that ecomorphological feeding adaptations vary more between, rather than within, odontocete families, and functional anatomical patterns across odontocete clades are canalised by size constraints.

The false killer whale (Pseudorca crassidens (Owen, 1846)) is a globally distributed delphinid that shows geographical differentiation in its skull morphology. We explored cranial morphological variation in a sample of 85 skulls belonging to a mixed sex population stranded in the Moray Firth, Scotland, in 1927. A three-dimensional digitizer (Microscribe 2GX) was used to record 37 anatomical landmarks on the cranium and 25 on the mandible to investigate size and shape variation and to explore sexual dimorphism using geometric morphometric. Males showed greater overall skull size than females, whereas no sexual dimorphism could be identified in cranial and mandibular shape. Allometric skull changes occurred in parallel for both males and females, supporting the lack of sexual shape dimorphism for this particular sample. Also, fluctuating asymmetry did not differ between crania of males and females. This study confirms the absence of sexual shape dimorphism and the presence of a sexual size dimorphism in this false killer whale population.

SUMMARYComplementary and integrative medicine provides safe, low-cost, effective treatments for conditions ranging from everyday stress to post-traumatic stress disorder. The evidence for herbs, nutrients and mind–body practices is growing, despite disproportionately small amounts of financial support compared with funding for expensive pharmaceuticals. The unsustainable cost of conventional treatments, the moral imperative to care for millions of uninsured and the impact of COVID-19 compel us to fully explore known and potential benefits of treatments being used by complementary and integrative practitioners.

Cadmium-containing luminescent quantum dots (QD) are increasingly used in display, bioimaging, and energy technologies; however, significant concerns have been raised about their potentially adverse impact on human health and the environment. This study makes use of a broad toolkit of analytical methods to investigate and increase our understanding of the interactions of luminescent cadmium-containing (CdSe) and cadmium-free (ZnSe) QD, with and without a passivating higher bandgap energy ZnS shell, with phospholipid vesicles (liposomes), which model bacterial membranes, and with Shewanella oneidensis MR-1, an environmentally relevant bacteria. A unique feature of this study is that all QD types have the same surface chemistry, being capped with uncharged poly(ethylene glycol) ligands. This enables focusing the study on the impact of the QD core on liposomes and bacterial cells. The study reveals that QD association with liposome and bacterial cell membranes is imperative for their adverse impact on liposomes and bacterial cells. The QD' concentration-dependent association with liposomes and bacterial cells destabilizes the membranes mechanically, which leads to membrane disruption and lysis in liposomes and to bacterial cell death. The study also shows that cadmium-containing QD exhibit a higher level of membrane disruption in bacterial cells than cadmium-free QD. ZnSe QD have low membrane impact, and coating them with a ZnS shell decreases their membrane disruption activity. In contrast, CdSe QD exhibit a high level of membrane impact, and coating them with a ZnS shell does not decrease, but in fact further increases, their membrane disruption activity. This behavior might be attributed to higher affinity and association of CdSe/ZnS QD with liposomes and bacterial cells and to a contribution of dissolved zinc ions from the ZnS shell to increased membrane disruption activity.

Objectives: The aims of this study were to assess the effects of an intervention of Iyengar yoga and coherent breathing at five breaths per minute on depressive symptoms and to determine optimal intervention yoga dosing for future studies in individuals with major depressive disorder (MDD). Methods: Subjects were randomized to the high-dose group (HDG) or low-dose group (LDG) for a 12-week intervention of three or two intervention classes per week, respectively. Eligible subjects were 18–64 years old with MDD, had baseline Beck Depression Inventory-II (BDI-II) scores ≥14, and were either on no antidepressant medications or on a stable dose of antidepressants for ≥3 months. The intervention included 90-min classes plus homework. Outcome measures were BDI-II scores and intervention compliance. Results: Fifteen HDG (Mage=38.4±15.1 years) and 15 LDG (Mage=34.7±10.4 years) subjects completed the intervention. BDI-II scores at screening and compliance did not differ between groups (p=0.26). BDI-II scores declined significantly from screening (24.6±1.7) to week 12 (6.0±3.8) for the HDG (–18.6±6.6; p 50% decrease in BDI-II scores; p=0.65) for the HDG (13/15 subjects) and LDG (11/15 subjects) or remission (i.e., number of subjects with BDI-II scores

Antimicrobial silver nanoparticles used in consumer products may be released during fabrication, during product use, or after disposal and may reach terrestrial and aquatic ecosystems, prompting concern about their potential to adversely impact the environment (Benn and Westerhoff, Environ. Sci. Technol., 2008, 42, 4133, DOI: 10.1021/es7032718). Although the toxicity of pristine silver nanoparticles is well studied and understood, silver nanoparticles can undergo transformation during release and in engineered and natural environments. The speciation of silver after release must therefore be explored to deepen understanding of the potential impact of these nanoparticles on the environment. Herein, we highlight three articles which use highly sensitive analytical techniques to define, and in some cases map, silver speciation in situ after exposure to organisms of varying size and complexity. First, we highlight research by Leonardo et al. which explores the transformations of silver acted upon by a microalgae species that is a candidate for heavy metal remediation in water. Next, we highlight research by Stegemeier et al. quantifying and mapping the speciation of silver in alfalfa after exposure to several silver sources, including two silver-based nanoparticles. Finally, we discuss work by Wang et al. on silver speciation in human monocyte cells as observed by synchrotron radiation techniques which leads to mechanistic insights on cytotoxicity.

Yogic breathing is a unique method for balancing the autonomic nervous system and influencing psychologic and stress-related disorders. Part I of this series presented a neurophysiologic theory of the effects of Sudarshan Kriya Yoga (SKY). Part II will review clinical studies, our own clinical observations, and guidelines for the safe and effective use of yoga breath techniques in a wide range of clinical conditions. Although more clinical studies are needed to document the benefits of programs that combine pranayama (yogic breathing) asanas (yoga postures), and meditation, there is sufficient evidence to consider Sudarshan Kriya Yoga to be a beneficial, low-risk, low-cost adjunct to the treatment of stress, anxiety, post-traumatic stress disorder (PTSD), depression, stress-related medical illnesses, substance abuse, and rehabilitation of criminal offenders. SKY has been used as a public health intervention to alleviate PTSD in survivors of mass disasters. Yoga techniques enhance well-being, mood, attention, mental focus, and stress tolerance. Proper training by a skilled teacher and a 30-minute practice every day will maximize the benefits. Health care providers play a crucial role in encouraging patients to maintain their yoga practices.

The use of complementary and alternative medicine (CAM) has increased tremendously over the past 10 years. As a result of the increase physicians must understand both the factual information about CAM practices and the psychologic reasons patients seek out such treatments. A particular concern is the use of CAM by patients without the knowledge of their physicians, which may lead to complications resulting from interactions, or adverse effects from treatments of which the physician is unaware. This paper reviews research concerning the use of CAM by patients, explores some of the psychodynamic factors in CAM use, and suggests means of integrating that use into the patient's therapy. Specific information about herbal and other alternative products is provided.

Serotonin abnormalities have been reported in the brain of suicide victims. Evidence of a serotonin deficiency in suicide attempters is less consistent. We hypothesized that a serotonin deficiency may be present in suicide attempters whose attempt behavior more closely approximates completed suicide.Sixty-seven (67) drug-free depressed inpatients (46 suicide attempters, 21 nonattempters) underwent research clinical assessments and a lumbar puncture. Cerebrospinal fluid (CSF) monoamine metabolites were assayed. Degree of medical damage and intent of the most recent suicide attempt were rated.CSF amine metabolites did not differentiate suicide attempters as a group from nonattempters. However, reduced serotonergic activity, as indicated by lower levels of CSF-5-hydroxyindoleacetic acid (5-HIAA) was associated with a history of planned suicide attempts and with suicide attempts that resulted in greater medical damage. Other monoamine metabolites did not correlate with seriousness of suicidal behavior, except for low CSF homovanillic acid and higher medical damage. No correlation was found with violent method.Planned and more medically damaging suicide attempts appear to be associated specifically with low serotonergic activity and, therefore, resemble completed suicide both behaviorally and biochemically. It remains to be determined whether low levels of CSF 5-HIAA can predict greater medical damage in future suicide attempts.

The Behavioral Syndromes Scale for Dementia (BSSD) is a new instrument that showed strong internal consistency and interrater reliability in an outpatient sample of 106 patients with probable Alzheimer's disease. Factor analysis provided support for a priori symptom groupings, particularly the syndromes of disinhibition and apathy-indifference. Dependency (87%), denial of illness (63%), and motor agitation (55%) were common, while sexual disinhibition (2.9%) and self-destructive behaviors (2.9%) were rare. Virtually all symptoms were predominantly minimal to mild in severity. Patients with longer illness duration were more apathetic. Disinhibited behaviors and apathy-indifference increased with greater severity of dementia. Catastrophic reactions, aggression, and agitation were associated with greater functional impairment. There was great heterogeneity in symptom presentation. In Alzheimer's disease, several behavioral changes might be direct manifestations of underlying brain pathology, rather than being solely secondary to cognitive impairment.

Yoga breathing is an important part of health and spiritual practices in Indo-Tibetan traditions. Considered fundamental for the development of physical well-being, meditation, awareness, and enlightenment, it is both a form of meditation in itself and a preparation for deep meditation. Yoga breathing (pranayama) can rapidly bring the mind to the present moment and reduce stress. In this paper, we review data indicating how breath work can affect longevity mechanisms in some ways that overlap with meditation and in other ways that are different from, but that synergistically enhance, the effects of meditation. We also provide clinical evidence for the use of yoga breathing in the treatment of depression, anxiety, post-traumatic stress disorder, and for victims of mass disasters. By inducing stress resilience, breath work enables us to rapidly and compassionately relieve many forms of suffering.

Phrynocephalus vlangalii is restricted to dry sand or Gobi desert highlands between major mountain ranges in the Qinghai (Tibetan) Plateau. Mitochondrial DNA (mtDNA) sequence (partial ND2, tRNA(Trp) and partial tRNA(Ala)) was obtained from 293 Phrynocephalus sampled from 34 sites across the plateau. Partitioned Bayesian and maximum parsimony phylogenetic analyses revealed that P. vlangalii and two other proposed species (P. erythrus and P. putjatia) together form a monophyletic mtDNA clade which, in contrast with previous studies, does not include P. theobaldi and P. zetangensis. The main P. vlangalli clade comprises seven well-supported lineages that correspond to distinct geographical areas with little or no overlap, and share a most recent common ancestor at 5.06 +/- 0.68 million years ago (mya). This is much older than intraspecific lineages in other Tibetan animal groups. Analyses of molecular variance indicated that most of the observed genetic variation occurred among populations/regions implying long-term interruption of maternal gene flow. A combined approach based on tests of population expansion, estimation of node dates, and significance tests on clade areas indicated that phylogeographical structuring has been primarily shaped by three main periods of plateau uplift during the Pliocene and Pleistocene, specifically 3.4 mya, 2.5 mya and 1.7 mya. These periods corresponded to the appearance of several mountain ranges that formed physical barriers between lineages. Populations from the Qaidam Basin are shown to have undergone major demographic and range expansions in the early Pleistocene, consistent with colonization of areas previously covered by the huge Qaidam palaeolake, which desiccated at this time. The study represents one of the most detailed phylogeographical analyses of the Qinghai Plateau to date and shows how geological events have shaped current patterns of diversity.

Several processes have been described that could explain geographical variation and speciation within small islands, including fragmentation of populations through volcanic eruptions. Massive landslides, or debris avalanches, could cause similar effects. Here we analyse the potential impact of the 0.8 million-year-ago (Ma) Güimar valley debris avalanche on the phylogeography of the lizard Gallotia galloti on the Canary Island of Tenerife. Distributions of mitochondrial DNA lineages (based on cytochrome b sequences) were analysed on a 60-km southeastern coast transect centred on this area. Three main clades were detected, which can be divided into northern (one clade) and southern (two clades) groups that introgress across the valley. Maximum-likelihood estimates of migration rates (scaled for mutation rate) revealed highly asymmetric patterns, indicating that long-term gene flow into this region from both the northern and the southern populations greatly exceeded that in the opposite directions, consistent with recolonization of the area. The ancestral Tenerife node on the G. galloti tree is estimated at 0.80 Ma, matching closely with the geological estimate for the debris avalanche. Morphological variation (body dimensions and scalation) was also analysed and indicated a stepped cline in female scalation across the valley, although the patterns for male scalation and male and female body dimensions were not as clear. Together these findings provide support for the hypothesis that the debris avalanche has shaped the phylogeography of G. galloti and may even have been a primary cause of the within-island cladogenesis through population fragmentation and isolation. Current estimates of timing of island unification mean that the original hypothesis that within-island diversity is explained by the secondary contact of populations from the two ancient precursor islands of Teno and Anaga is less plausible for this and some other Tenerife species. Large-scale landslides have occurred on many volcanic islands, and so may have been instrumental in shaping within-island diversities.

Mind-body interventions are beneficial in stress-related mental and physical disorders. Current research is finding associations between emotional disorders and vagal tone as indicated by heart rate variability. A neurophysiologic model of yogic breathing proposes to integrate research on yoga with polyvagal theory, vagal stimulation, hyperventilation, and clinical observations. Yogic breathing is a unique method for balancing the autonomic nervous system and influencing psychologic and stress-related disorders. Many studies demonstrate effects of yogic breathing on brain function and physiologic parameters, but the mechanisms have not been clarified. Sudarshan Kriya yoga (SKY), a sequence of specific breathing techniques (ujjayi, bhastrika, and Sudarshan Kriya) can alleviate anxiety, depression, everyday stress, post-traumatic stress, and stress-related medical illnesses. Mechanisms contributing to a state of calm alertness include increased parasympathetic drive, calming of stress response systems, neuroendocrine release of hormones, and thalamic generators. This model has heuristic value, research implications, and clinical applications.

We report a pilot study of S-adenosyl-methionine (SAM) in 13 depressed patients with Parkinson's disease. All patients had been previously treated with other antidepressant agents and had no significant benefit or had intolerable side effects. SAM was administered in doses of 800 to 3600 mg per day for a period of 10 weeks. Eleven patients completed the study, and 10 had at least a 50% improvement on the 17-point Hamilton Depression Scale (HDS). One patient did not improve. Two patients prematurely terminated participation in the study because of increased anxiety. One patient experienced mild nausea, and another two patients developed mild diarrhea, which resolved spontaneously. The mean HDS score before treatment was 27.09 +/- 6.04 (mean +/- standard deviation) and was 9.55 +/- 7.29 after SAM treatment (p < 0.0001). Although uncontrolled and preliminary, this study suggests that SAM is well tolerated and may be a safe and effective alternative to the antidepressant agents currently used in patients with Parkinson's disease.

Selected transistors and diodes have been irradiated by various types and energies of dislocating radiation. Irradiation by protons of 10-Mev, neutrons of a reactor spectrum, electrons of 5, 10, and 25-Mev, gamma rays from cobalt-60, and bremsstrahlung from stopping of 5-Mev electrons are discussed. Passive and dynamic monitoring of permanent radiation damage was performed for exposures ranging from "threshold" to failure doses, utilizing various exposure rates. Changes in transistor forward current gain and changes in diode lifetime are presented in terms of integrated "particle" flux. From such analysis, the feasibility of ascribing an equivalence of radiation particles for aermanent damage in transistors and diodes has been successfully shown. Comparative damage curves, correlations of operational degradation with defect densities, and preliminary equivalences are presented.

Under most circumstances, the volume of hiring at any given time involves only a fractional addition to the plant work force and the criteria for selection and placement are usually well established. Hiring an entire force of substantial size and in the absence of empirically tested criteria for selection and placement presents a problem of greater magnitude and complexity, particularly when the jobs require a high order of skill. This article describes the experience of a machinery manufacturer with just such a problem and suggests that successful selection and placement may be accomplished at minimum cost by careful use of aptitude tests. Ten depressed patients treated with trazodone developed edema and weight gain that was promptly reversed by reduction or discontinuation of trazodone. This suggests a dose-dependent effect. None of the patients had an active medical problem that might predispose to edema formation. Summary data on all 10 cases and three case histories are presented to alert physicians to this side effect.

It is unclear why delusional depressives respond poorly to usual doses of tricyclic antidepressants alone. Seventeen elderly, delusional depressives were treated with high doses of imipramine or desmethylimipramine while monitoring plasma levels in an open study. Four of seven patients who received an adequate trial responded, but over half of the total sample had to be dropped due to intolerable side effects or worsening clinical condition. Antidepressants in high doses may be effective for part of the delusional depression sample, but this potentially effective pharmacologic therapy is not feasible in a large percentage of elderly or agitated patients.

Since formal seniority policies are established to provide orderly and equitable administration of layoffs, recalls, and promotions, it is incongruous, as is remarked in this article, that they should be the source of frequent disputes. Two difficulties are involved in seniority programs: (1) too simple a policy may be inadequate to meet the complexities of the plant situation, but (2) a more complicated policy may be difficult to administer. This article describes the technique adopted in a large firm to provide the accurate and current information needed for administration of a relatively complex seniority policy.
