Abstract Background Respiratory Syncytial Virus (RSV) is an important pathogen causing acute respiratory illnesses in adults. RSV infection can lead to severe outcomes, including hospitalizations and even death. Despite the increased recognition of the burden in older adults, immediate post-discharge care needs among adults hospitalized with RSV are not well characterized and have not been compared to other serious medical conditions (such as influenza, acute myocardial infarction (MI), and stroke) for which there have been long-standing disease prevention efforts. Objectives This study aims to describe the immediate post-discharge care needs among adults hospitalized with RSV in the United States and descriptively compare it to those hospitalized with influenza, acute MI, or stroke. Design Retrospective observational cohort study. Patients Adults aged ≥ 18 years, hospitalized with a primary diagnosis of RSV, influenza, acute MI, or stroke from January 01, 2016, to December 31, 2019, were identified from the Premier Healthcare Database using the International Classification of Diseases (ICD-10) codes. Main measures Immediate post-discharge care was categorized into three different levels of care based on the discharge dispositions. Descriptive analyses were performed. Key results In total, 3,629 RSV, 303,577 influenza, 388,682 acute MI, and 416,750 stroke hospitalizations were identified, the majority occurred among patients aged ≥ 65 years. Professional home care needs were the highest for RSV hospitalizations (19.1%), followed by influenza (17.7%), stroke (15.4%), and acute MI (9.8%). Additionally, institutional care needs immediately following discharge were similar for RSV, influenza, and acute MI hospitalizations (14.2%, 15.8%, and 14.1%, respectively). Conclusions Immediate post-discharge care needs among adults hospitalized with RSV, especially in older adults, can be considerable and comparable to influenza and acute MI discharges. With recently approved RSV vaccines, efforts to increase vaccination in older adults are needed to prevent RSV and associated healthcare consequences.

Abstract Introduction While it is widely recognized that older adults, adults with chronic medical conditions (CMC), and adults with immunocompromising conditions (IC) are at increased risk of lower respiratory tract illness (LRTI), evidence of the magnitude of increased risk is limited. This study was thus undertaken to characterize rates of hospitalized and ambulatory LRTI among United States (US) adults by age and comorbidity profile. Methods A retrospective cohort design and US healthcare claims database (2016–2019) were employed. Study population included adults aged ≥ 18 years and was stratified by age and comorbidity profile (CMC−, CMC+ , IC). LRTI was ascertained overall and by pathogen pathogen (e.g., respiratory syncytial virus [RSV]), and was classified by care setting (hospital, emergency department [ED], physician office/hospital outpatient [PO/HO]). Results Relative rates (RR) of LRTI generally increased with older age across care settings (vs. 18–49 years), with the most marked increase for hospitalizations: for LRTI-hospitalized, RRs ranged from 3.3 for 50–64 years to 46.6 for ≥ 85 years; for LRTI-ED and LRTI-PO/HO, RRs ranged from 1.0 to 2.7 and from 1.3 to 1.5, respectively. Within age groups, LRTI rates were also consistently higher among CMC+ and IC adults (vs. CMC− adults). Age-specific RRs of LRTI patients hospitalized due to RSV were largely comparable to overall LRTI; age-specific RRs for other care settings, and RRs for CMC+ and IC adults (vs. CMC− adults), were generally higher for LRTI due to RSV. Conclusions Incidence of LRTI, including that due to RSV, especially for events requiring acute inpatient care, is markedly higher among older adults and adults of all ages with CMC or IC.

Abstract Background Pericapsular nerve group (PENG) block has shown effectiveness for acute hip pain associated with fractures and surgery. Herein, PENG block was performed for osteoarthritis (OA)-related chronic hip joint pain. Case presentation A 65-year-old woman presented left hip pain. She had bilateral hip osteoarthritis that improved with medications; however, a fall resulted in left hip pain. She experienced severe pain on movements, which required walking aids. To alleviate the hip pain, a PENG block was performed under ultrasound guidance. Transient muscle weakness occurred in 2 of 5 times. After 5 blocks, she regained the ability to walk without assistive devices. Pain did not recur even after 6 months. Conclusions Repeated PENG blocks of short-acting local anesthetics alone could be an effective pain management technique for chronic hip pain. For safety, the appropriate injection site and local anesthetic dosage must be carefully considered.

Two vaccines, 23-valent pneumococcal polysaccharide vaccine (PPSV23) and 13-valent pneumococcal conjugate vaccine (PCV13), are widely available for the prevention of pneumococcal disease in adults. However, it is unclear how cost-effective these pneumococcal vaccine choices are in the Hong Kong healthcare environment. We aimed to assess the cost-effectiveness of a sequential administration of PCV13 followed by PPSV23 compared to a single dose of PPSV23 vaccination for pneumococcal disease control in Hong Kong adults aged ≥65 years and individuals aged 20–64 years with immunocompromising and chronic conditions. A previously developed deterministic cohort sequential model was applied to compare the outcomes of two vaccination strategies from a societal perspective. Population-specific model input, including incidence, mortality, case-fatality, risk group distribution, vaccination costs, disease management, and productivity loss, was estimated from a Hong Kong-wide electronic medical database. Costs were valued in US$ in 2017. Vaccination strategies with an incremental cost-effectiveness ratio (ICER, defined as incremental cost per QALY saved) less than one local GDP per capita ($46,193 in 2017) were defined as highly cost-effective. Deterministic sensitivity analyses (SA) were conducted. Compared with single-dose PPSV23, sequential vaccination of PCV13 followed by PPSV23 was cost-saving for adults aged ≥20 years. In the deterministic SA, the base-case results were robust for tested parameter uncertainties. Future vaccination policies should consider the cost-effectiveness of a sequential vaccination strategy as a measure to reduce the vaccine-preventable pneumococcal disease burden in Hong Kong.

Productivity benefits of health technologies are ignored in typical economic evaluations from a health payer’s perspective, risking undervaluation. We conduct a productivity-based cost-benefit analysis from a societal perspective and estimate indirect costs of adult pneumococcal disease, vaccination benefits from the adult 13-valent pneumococcal conjugate vaccine (PCV13 Adult), and rates of return to PCV13 Adult for a range of hypothetical vaccination costs. Our context is Turkey’s funding PCV13 for the elderly and for non-elderly adults with select comorbidities within the Ministry of Health’s National Immunization Program. We use a Markov model with one-year cycles. Indirect costs from death or disability equal the expected present discounted value of lifetime losses in the infected individual’s paid and unpaid work and in caregivers’ paid work. Vaccination benefits comprise averted indirect costs. Rates of return equal vaccination benefits divided by vaccination costs, minus one. Input parameters are from public data sources. We model comorbidities’ effects by scalar multiplication of the parameters of the general population. Indirect costs per treatment episode of inpatient community-acquired pneumonia (CAP), bacteremia, and meningitis – but not for outpatient CAP – approach or exceed Turkish per capita gross domestic product. Vaccination benefits equal $207.02 per vaccination in 2017 US dollars. The rate of return is positive for all hypothetical costs below this. Results are sensitive to herd effects from pediatric vaccination and vaccine efficacy rates. For a wide range of hypothetical vaccination costs, the rate of return compares favorably with those of other global development interventions with well-established strong investment cases.

Abstract Background Data on the burden of community-acquired pneumonia (CAP) and health-care related costs in patients with cancer is scarce. We aimed to estimate the CAP incidence rate, mortality, and healthcare-related costs of CAP patients with different cancer subtypes in Germany. Methods We used German health claims data of a representative sample of 4 million subjects to conduct cohort studies in patients with a new diagnosis of lung, hematological, breast, gastro-intestinal tract and renal/urinary-tract cancer and a comparator cohort without cancer between 2011 and 2015. CAP cases were identified in both the hospital and ambulatory care setting. Crude and age- and sex-standardized incidence rates (sIR) of CAP and mortality after CAP were calculated. To compare the health care-related costs of cancer patients with and without a diagnosis of CAP, a propensity-score (PS) matched control group was created. Results The study population comprised of 89,007 patients with cancer. In lung cancer patients, the sIR was increased 21-fold compared to the control cohort. For the other cancer subtypes, the sIR was increased 4.3-fold (hematological malignancies) to 1.7-fold (breast cancer) compared to the control cohort. The 30-day mortality in CAP cases was highest in lung cancer patients with 20.0% and ranged from 7.2 to 18.5% in CAP cases with other cancer subtypes. The highest costs were observed in CAP cases with hematological malignancies with 28,969 € (SD 37,142 €) and the lowest in patients with renal/urinary tract cancer with 17,432 € (SD 19,579 €). The absolute difference in the mean overall costs between CAP cases and controls without CAP ranged from 4,111€ to 9,826€, depending on the cancer type. CAP-related costs were predominantly triggered by substantially elevated hospital costs in CAP cases. Conclusions The incidence rate of CAP and related mortality is high in patients with cancer with strong variations by cancer subtype. Furthermore, CAP in cancer patients is associated with substantial direct excess costs.

Blau syndrome (BS) is a very rare autosomal dominant juvenile inflammatory disorder caused by mutation in nucleotide-binding oligomerization domain containing 2 (NOD2). Usually, dermatitis is the first symptom that appears in the 1styear of life. About 220 BS cases with confirmed NOD2 mutation have been reported. However, the rarity and lack of awareness of the disease, especially in the regions where genetic tests are very limited, often result in late diagnosis and misdiagnosis. Here, we report a de novo BS case from Malaysia, which may be the first report from southeast Asia. PCR and DNA sequencing of peripheral blood mononuclear cells were performed to screen the entire coding region of NOD2 gene. A heterozygous c.1000C>T transition in exon 4, p. R334W, of the NOD2 gene was identified in the patient. This report further reaffirms the ubiquitousness of the disease and recurrency of p. R334W mutation.

Alkenes and aromatics significantly contribute to the photochemical reactions in the Kanto Region, where the level of ozone frequently exceeds the level for photochemical smog warnings in summer. The major aromatic sources have been cataloged in the Pollutant Release and Transfer Register (PRTR) database in Japan; however, the major alkene sources are not included. We investigated the hourly variations in the volatile organic compound (VOC) concentrations at four sampling sites in the Tokyo Bay coastal area, which has a variety of VOC sources, including the petrochemical industry, chemical facilities, iron–steel plants, and refineries. The 116-component VOC data were used to conduct a positive matrix factorization (PMF) analysis to apportion the VOC sources; then, the source regions were estimated by combining the concentration ratios of the factors with the wind direction data. We used the hourly VOC data for the PMF analysis because alkenes are short-lived. Six factors were estimated using the PMF method and identified as liquefied petroleum gas + industry, aged air mass, fuel evaporation, petrochemical industry, aromatics, and solvent usage. The mean contribution ratios of these six factors were 8.9%, 19.9%, 9.3%, 10.4%, 9.9%, and 14.0%, respectively, whereas the mean contribution ratio of the residual was 27.7%. By combining the alkene concentration and factor contribution ratios with the wind direction, the petrochemical industry in the Kawasaki coastal area was demonstrated to be the main alkene source. In addition, the petrochemical industry makes the largest contribution to ozone production according to the OH radical loss rates of the six factors.

Abstract Background The risk of community-acquired pneumonia (CAP) increases with age and significantly impacts morbidity and mortality in the elderly population. The burden of illness and cost of preventing CAP has not been compared to other serious diseases. Methods This retrospective analysis used claims data from 2014 to 2015 and compared hospitalizations for CAP, myocardial infarction (MI), stroke, and osteoporotic fractures (OF) in adults aged ≥65 years enrolled in a Medicare Advantage insurance plan. Individuals who had not already been hospitalized for one of these conditions and did not have evidence of long-term care were included in the study. Hospitalizations for each condition were described by length of stay, readmissions, mortality, and total costs. Preventive measures included vaccinations for CAP and medications for MI, stroke, and OF. Results A total of 1,949,352 individuals were included in the cohort. In 2015, the rate of CAP-related hospitalizations was the highest at 846.7 per 100,000 person-years compared to 405 for MI, 278.9 for stroke, and 343.9 for OF. Vaccination costs for CAP were $40.2 million including $14.1 million for pneumococcal and $26.1 million for influenza vaccines. The cost of preventive medications for MI and stroke reached over $661 million and OF totaled $169 million. Conclusions Although CAP has a higher burden of hospitalization and total costs than MI, stroke, and OF in the elderly population, prevention efforts were disproportionately smaller for CAP. Prioritization of CAP prevention is needed to substantially reduce the burden of CAP.

Summary: Recent successes in tumor immunotherapies have highlighted the importance of tumor immunity. However, most of the work conducted to date has been on T cell immunity, while the role of B cell immunity in cancer remains more elusive. In this study, immunogenetic repertoire profiling for tumor-infiltrating B and T cells in gastric cancers was carried out to help reveal the architecture of B cell immunity in cancer. Humoral immunity in cancer was shown to involve oligoclonal expansions of tumor-specific and private B cell repertoires. We find that B cell repertoires in cancer are shaped by somatic hypermutation (SHM) either with or without positive selection biases, the latter of which tended to be auto-reactive. Importantly, we identified sulfated glycosaminoglycans (GAGs) as major functional B cell antigens among gastric tumors. Furthermore, natural anti-sulfated GAG antibodies discovered in gastric cancer tissues showed robust growth-suppressive functions against a wide variety of human malignancies of various organs. : Katoh et al. profile immunoglobulin repertoires of tumor-infiltrating B cells, identifying sulfated glycosaminoglycan as a major functional B cell antigen in tumors. Repertoire profiling for tumor-infiltrating B cells may pave the way to the development of therapeutic antibodies. Tumor suppression by the extracts of Azadirachta indica (neem) works via anti-proliferation, cell cycle arrest, and apoptosis, demonstrated previously using cancer cell lines and live animal models. However, very little is known about the molecular targets and pathways that neem extracts and their associated compounds act through. Here, we address this using a genome-wide functional pooled shRNA screen on head and neck squamous cell carcinoma cell lines treated with crude neem leaf extracts, known for their anti-tumorigenic activity. We analyzed differences in global clonal sizes of the shRNA-infected cells cultured under no treatment and treatment with neem leaf extract conditions, assayed using next-generation sequencing. We found 225 genes affected the cancer cell growth in the shRNA-infected cells treated with neem extract. Pathway enrichment analyses of whole-genome gene expression data from cells temporally treated with neem extract revealed important roles played by the TGF-β pathway and HSF-1-related gene network. Our results indicate that neem extract affects various important molecular signaling pathways in head and neck cancer cells, some of which may be therapeutic targets for this devastating tumor.

BACKGROUND:The Belgian Superior Health Council (SHC) recently added a 13-valent pneumococcal conjugate vaccine (PCV13) to its recommendations for adult pneumococcal vaccination. This study addresses the policy question regarding whether a single dose of PCV13 should be reimbursed among Belgian adults aged 65-84 years with chronic comorbidities ("moderate-risk") or immunosuppression ("high-risk"). METHODS:A cohort model was developed to project lifetime risks, consequences, and costs of invasive pneumococcal disease (IPD) and pneumococcal community-acquired pneumonia (CAP). Parameter values were estimated using published literature and available databases, and were reviewed by Belgian experts. PCV13 effectiveness was assumed to be durable during the first 5 years following receipt, and to progressively decline thereafter with 15 years protection. The Belgian National Health Insurance perspective was employed. RESULTS:Use of PCV13 (vs. no vaccine) in moderate/high-risk persons aged 65-84 years (n = 861,467; 58% vaccination coverage) would be expected to prevent 527 cases of IPD, 1,744 cases of pneumococcal CAP and 176 pneumococcal-related deaths, and reduce medical care costs by €20.1 million. Vaccination costs, however, would increase by €36.9 million and thus total overall costs would increase by €16.8 million. Cost per QALY gained was €17,126. In probabilistic sensitivity analyses, use of PCV13 was cost-effective in 97% of 1,000 simulations. CONCLUSIONS:Reimbursement of PCV13 in moderate/high-risk Belgian adults aged 65-84 years would be cost-effective from the Belgian healthcare perspective.

BACKGROUND:Pneumococcal disease causes substantial morbidity and mortality, including among adults. Adult pneumococcal vaccines help to prevent these burdens, but they are underused. Accounting for the full benefits of adult pneumococcal vaccination may promote more rational resource allocation decisions with respect to adult pneumococcal vaccines. OBJECTIVES:Using the Preferred Reporting Items for Systematic Reviews and Meta-Analyses (PRISMA) guidelines, we conducted a systematic review to assess the extent to which the literature has empirically captured (e.g., through measurement or modeling) the full benefits of adult pneumococcal vaccination. METHODS:We systematically searched PubMed and Embase to identify studies published between January 1, 2010 and April 10, 2016 that examine adult pneumococcal vaccination. We included articles if they captured any health or economic benefit of an adult pneumococcal vaccine administered to adults age ≥ 50 or ≥ 18 in risk groups. Finally, we summarized the literature by categorizing the types of benefits captured, the perspective taken, and the strength of the evidence presented. Our protocol is number 42016038335 in the PROSPERO International prospective register of systematic reviews. RESULTS:We identified 5,857 papers and included 150 studies for analysis. While most capture health gains and healthcare cost savings, far fewer studies consider additional benefit categories, such as productivity gains. However, the studies with a broader approach still exhibit significant limitations; for example, many present only abstracts, while others offer no new measurements. Studies that examine the 13-valent pneumococcal conjugate vaccine focus more on broad economic benefits, but still have limitations. CONCLUSIONS:This review highlights the need for more robust empirical accounting of the full benefits of adult pneumococcal vaccination. Literature outside this realm indicates that these broad benefits may be substantial. Failing to investigate the full benefits may lead society to undervalue vaccines' contributions and therefore underinvest in their development and adoption.

Recent evidence demonstrates increased short-term risk of cardiac complications and respiratory failure among patients with heart failure (HF) and chronic obstructive pulmonary disease (COPD), respectively, concurrent with an episode of community-acquired pneumonia (CAP). We evaluated patients with pre-existing HF or COPD, beginning 30 days after CAP diagnosis, to determine if CAP had a prolonged impact on their underlying comorbidity.A retrospective matched-cohort design using US healthcare claims was employed. In each month of accrual, patients with HF or COPD who developed CAP ("CAP patients") were matched (1:1, without replacement, on demographic and clinical profiles) to patients with HF or COPD who did not develop CAP ("comparison patients"). All patients were aged ≥40 years, and were pneumonia free during prior 1-year period. Exacerbation beginning 30 days after the CAP diagnosis and for the subsequent 1-year period were compared between CAP and comparison patients.38,010 (4·6%) HF patients and 48,703 (5·9%) COPD patients experienced a new CAP episode requiring hospitalization or outpatient care only, and were matched to comparison patients. Carbohydrates are candidates for the basis of species-selective interaction of gametes during mammalian fertilization. In this study, we sought to clarify the roles of sugar residues in the species-selective, sperm–oocyte interaction in pigs and cattle. Acrosome-intact porcine and bovine sperm exhibited their strongest binding affinities for β-Gal and α-Man residues, respectively. Porcine-sperm specificity changed from β-Gal to α-Man after the acrosome reaction, while bovine-sperm specificity did not. Binding of acrosome-intact and acrosome-reacted sperm decreased after trypsinization, indicating that the carbohydrate-binding components are proteins. While immature oocytes bound homologous sperm preferentially to heterologous sperm, oocytes matured in vitro bound similar numbers of homologous and heterologous sperm. Lectin staining revealed the aggregation of α-Man residues on the outer surface of the porcine zona during maturation. In both species, zona-free, mature oocytes bound homologous sperm preferentially to heterologous sperm. The lectin-staining patterns of the zona pellucida and zona-free oocytes coincided with the carbohydrate-binding specificities of acrosome-intact and acrosome-reacted sperm, respectively, supporting the involvement of carbohydrates in gamete recognition in pigs and cattle. These results also indicate that sperm-zona pellucida and sperm–oolemma bindings are not strictly species-specific in pigs and cattle, and further suggest that sperm penetration into the zona and/or fusion with oolemma may be species-specific between pigs and cattle.

The Co[Fe.sub.2][O.sub.4]-BaTi[O.sub.3] core-shell structure composite has been successfully synthesized by wet chemical method. X-ray characterization showed that the composite consisted of two single phases: Co[Fe.sub.2][O.sub.4] and BaTi[O.sub.3]. The saturation magnetization of the Co[Fe.sub.2][O.sub.4] component in composite was found to be similar to those of the bulk sample. It was observed that the longitudinal and transverse magnetoelectric coefficients of the core-shell structure are 18 times higher than those of the mixed structure. The behavior of the initial magnetic permeability ([[Mu].sub.i]) of a set of [Co.sub.75-x][Fe.sub.x][Si.sub.15][B.sub.10] amorphous ribbons (2 [less than or equal to] x [less than or equal to] 40) submitted to uniaxial stresses ([Sigma]) and/or to a dc longitudinal magnetic field is studied in detail. A maximum in the [[Mu].sub.i] vs. [Sigma] curves is observed independently of the sign and absolute value of the magnetostriction constant, and is related to changes in the magnetic domain structure.

Summary: Loss of epithelial integrity is associated with colorectal cancer (CRC) aggressiveness. Protein kinase C (PKC) is frequently implicated in human cancers, but the role of PKCγ in CRC remains poorly understood. Here, we show that PKCγ, a conventional PKC, is expressed in normal colonic epithelium, but this is lower in dedifferentiated CRC. PKCγ expression was downregulated by SNAI1 overexpression, and low PKCγ expression was associated with poor prognosis in patients with CRC. Transient or stable knockdown of PKCγ reduced E-cadherin expression in CRC cells. PKCγ knockdown enhanced proliferation, anchorage-independent cell growth, resistance to anti-cancer drugs, and in vivo tumor growth of DLD-1 cells. We have also identified phosphorylation substrates for PKCγ. Among them, ARHGEF18, a RhoA activator that stabilizes cell-cell junctions, was phosphorylated and stabilized by PKCγ. Thus, these results suggest that the downregulation of PKCγ decreases the epithelial property of CRC cells and enhances its malignant phenotypes.

Changes in cell mechanics contribute to cancer cell dissemination. Here the authors show that high plasma membrane (PM) tension inhibits cancer dissemination by counteracting mechanosensitive BAR family protein assembly, while restoration of PM tension phenotypically convert malignant cells into a non-motile epithelial cell state.

Pancreatic ductal adenocarcinoma (PDAC) and cholangiocarcinoma (CCA) are malignant tumors with poor prognosis because of the limited effectiveness of traditional chemotherapy and few effective molecular therapeutic agents. Here, we determined the essential roles of Zic family member 5 (ZIC5) in the survival of PDAC and CCA cells. The results showed that ZIC5 is strongly expressed in PDAC and CCA tissues, while ZIC5 expression is barely observed in most normal human adult tissues. Furthermore, ZIC5 expression is related to poor prognosis of patients with PDAC. ZIC5 knockdown via small interfering RNA decreased the phosphorylation of signal transducer and activator of transcription 3 (STAT3), a protein that is associated with PDAC and CCA aggressiveness. However, ZIC5 knockdown induced cell death regardless of STAT3 activation, which is promoted by interleukin (IL) −6, a factor associated with inflammation. Furthermore, knockdown of ZIC5 in PDAC and CCA cells additively or synergistically induced apoptosis with the anti-cancer drug gemcitabine. Thus, ZIC5 constitutes a potential therapeutic target for the treatment of PDAC and CCA.

Background: Cancer microenvironment plays a vital role in cancer development and progression, and cancer-stromal interactions have been recognized as important targets for cancer therapy. However, identifying relevant and druggable cancer-stromal interactions is challenging due to the lack of quantitative methods to analyze whole cancer-stromal interactome. Results: We present CASTIN (CAncer-STromal INteractome analysis), a novel framework for the evaluation of cancer-stromal interactome from RNA-Seq data using cancer xenograft models. For each ligand-receptor interaction which is derived from curated protein-protein interaction database, CASTIN summarizes gene expression profiles of cancer and stroma into three evaluation indices. These indices provide quantitative evaluation and comprehensive visualization of interactome, and thus enable to identify critical cancer-microenvironment interactions, which would be potential drug targets. We applied CASTIN to the dataset of pancreas ductal adenocarcinoma, and successfully characterized the individual cancer in terms of cancer-stromal relationships, and identified both well-known and less-characterized druggable interactions. Conclusions: CASTIN provides comprehensive view of cancer-stromal interactome and is useful to identify critical interactions which may serve as potential drug targets in cancer-microenvironment. The room temperature magnetostriction of polycrystalline Fe100–xCrx alloys annealed at 800 °C was investigated as a function of Cr content varying from 10 to 30 at.% Cr. All alloys exhibited a single bcc \alpha -Fe–Cr phase with a disordered A2 structure. With increasing Cr concentration, the grain shape became very elongated. The greatest total magnetostriction value of 70 \times 10^{-6} was obtained in the direction of the elongated grains for 30% of Cr. We also investigated the effect of B addition on the magnetostriction and structural properties of the alloy Fe80Cr20. Although the addition of B was expected to form the Fe2B phase, the B-added Fe–Cr alloy forms a ternary phase (FezCr1–z)2B ( 0 < z < 0.55$ ), a weak magnetic phase. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

Hysteresis loops and magnetostriction were measured on ring-shaped Fe85Ga15 samples. The samples were annealed at T=980^\circC for 100 h and cooled from annealing temperature in two different ways: one was slowly cooled in an oven and the other one was quenched in cold water. X-ray diffraction results showed a strong texture in these samples, which is dependent on the cooling process. The anisotropy energy and magnetostriction of the samples were calculated based on these determined textures. These results agree qualitatively with magnetization and magnetostriction experiments and support the thermal history influence on the magnetostriction values. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

The aim of this study was to investigate the relationship between the clinical features of suicide attempts and the Great East Japan earthquake in Kanagawa. We enrolled 592 patients who attempted suicide and were hospitalized for inpatient treatment. Clinical features were compared between before the earthquake (A) and after the earthquake (B) groups. The number of suicide attempts increased from 286 to 306. The rate of increase in suicide attempts in men was the highest in the age group of 40-59 years. The frequency of joblessness, family psychiatric histories, precipitating event, and alcohol intake at suicide attempt was significantly higher in the B group than in the A group. The number of patients in serious condition in the B group was significantly higher than that in the A group. Other clinical features related to suicide in people who were indirectly affected by the earthquake disaster should be investigated to develop targeted prevention strategies. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

The CoFe2O4-BaTiO3 core-shell structure composite has been successfully synthesized by wet chemical method. X-ray characterization showed that the composite consisted of two single phases: CoFe2O4 and BaTiO3. The saturation magnetization of the CoFe2O4 component in composite was found to be similar to those of the bulk sample. It was observed that the longitudinal and transverse magnetoelectric coefficients of the core-shell structure are 18 times higher than those of the mixed structure. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]
