The interaction of the actinides Pu(III), Am(III), Np(V), Np(VI), and U(VI) with hardened cement paste (HCP) prepared from ordinary Portland cement was investigated by batch experiments in a diluted caprock solution (I = 2.5 M) as a function of the solid-to-liquid (S/L) ratio (0.5–20.0 g L−1) and pH (10–13). Independent of the oxidation state of the actinides, strong sorption was observed with Rd values between 104 and 5 × 105 L kg−1. For the hexavalent actinides U(VI) and Np(VI), a decrease in sorption was observed with increasing pH, which could be due to the formation of the AnO2(OH)42− species. CE-ICP-MS measurements of the supernatant solution from the U(VI) batch sorption experiment at pH ≥ 10 indicate that UO2(OH)3− and UO2(OH)42− dominate the speciation. Pu LIII-edge XANES and EXAFS measurements showed oxidation of Pu(III) to Pu(IV) when interacting with HCP. Calcium silicate hydrate (C-S-H) phases effectively immobilize Pu(IV) by incorporating it into the CaO layer. This was observed in a C-S-H sample with C/S = 1.65 and HCP at pH 12.7. Compared to data published in the literature on the retention of actinides on HCP at low ionic strength, the influence of high ionic strength (I = 2.5 M) on the sorption behavior was insignificant. In the frame of an experimental setting, the formation of round-shaped compounded glass fragments on the exit site after gunshots through a windshield was examined. For that purpose, a 9 × 19 mm pistol (HK P30) and two different cartridges containing (a) a full metal jacketed round-nosed projectile and (b) a deformation projectile were used. On the basis of 52 gunshots, the morphology, impact angles and terminal ballistics of occurring compounded glass fragments were examined. The results showed that the compounded glass fragments' morphology allowed for the differentiation of two used projectiles. Fragments were able to cause round-shaped defects in a single cotton layer (T-shirt) with subsequent penetration of up to 2.4 cm into ballistic gelatin (10%, 4 °C). As a function of the projectile type, the compounded glass fragments showed different reproducible impact angles that differed notably from the known conical pattern of expelled glass fragments after bullet penetration. These findings might help to explain the atypical morphology of gunshot wounds with laminated glass as an intermediate target and prevent possible misinterpretations when reconstructing the sequence of events. Immobilization of cell adhesive proteins on the scaffold surface has become a widely reported method that can improve the interaction between scaffold and cells. In this study, three nanofibrous scaffolds obtained by electrospinning of poly(caprolactone) (PCL), poly(L-lactide-co-caprolactone) (PLCL) 70:30, or poly(L-lactide) (PLLA) were subjected to chemical immobilization of gelatin based on aminolysis and glutaraldehyde cross-linking, as well as physisorption of gelatin. Two sets of aminolysis conditions were applied to evaluate the impact of amine group content. Based on the results of the colorimetric bicinchoninic acid (BCA) assay, it was shown that the concentration of gelatin on the surface is higher for the chemical modification and increases with the concentration of free NH2 groups. XPS (X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy) analysis confirmed this outcome. On the basis of XPS results, the thickness of the gelatin layer was estimated to be less than 10 nm. Initially, hydrophobic scaffolds are completely wettable after coating with gelatin, and the time of waterdrop absorption was correlated with the surface concentration of gelatin. In the case of all physically and mildly chemically modified samples, the decrease in stress and strain at break was relatively low, contrary to strongly aminolyzed PLCL and PLLA samples. Incubation testing performed on the PCL samples showed that a chemically immobilized gelatin layer is more stable than a physisorbed one; however, even after 90 days, more than 60% of the initial gelatin concentration was still present on the surface of physically modified samples. Mouse fibroblast L929 cell culture on modified samples indicates a positive effect of both physical and chemical modification on cell morphology. In the case of PCL and PLCL, the best morphology, characterized by stretched filopodia, was observed after stronger chemical modification, while for PLLA, there was no significant difference between modified samples. Analysis of technetium compounds by X-ray absorption near edge structure spectroscopy enables the determination of the chemical shifts of the technetium K edge. Spectral data reveal the significant correlation between oxidation state and chemical shift. In Tc2(CO)10 multiple scattering along the Tc-C-O vector is more important than the direct Tc..O scattering, as revealed by extended X-ray absorption fine structure (EXAFS) spectroscopy. EXAFS spectroscopic study of TcO2 reveals its distorted rutile structure.

Solid state reactions are notoriously slow, because the rate‐limiting step is diffusion of atoms or ions through reactant, intermediate, and product crystalline phases. This requires days or even weeks of high temperature treatment, consuming large amounts of energy. Metal oxides are particularly difficult to react, because they have high melting points. The study reports a high‐speed solid state fluorination of WO3 with Teflon to the oxyfluorides WO3–xFx on a minute (<10 min) scale by spark plasma sintering, a technique that is used typically for a high‐speed consolidation of powders. Automated electron diffraction analysis reveals an orthorhombic ReO3‐type structure of WO3–xFx with F atom disorder as demonstrated by 19F magic angle spinning nuclear magnetic resonance spectroscopy. The potential of this new approach is demonstrated by the following results. i) Mixed‐ valent tungsten oxide fluorides WO3–xFx with high F content (0 < x < 0.65) are obtained as metastable products in copious amounts within minutes. ii) The spark plasma sintering technique yields WO3–xFx nanoparticles with high photocatalytic activity, whereas the corresponding bulk phases obtained by conventional solid‐state (ampoule) reactions have no photocatalytic activity. iii) The catalytic activity is caused by the microstructure originating from the processing by spark plasma sintering. Bacillus shaericus JG-A12 is a natural isolate recovered from a uranium mining waste pile near the own of Johanngeorgenstadt in Saxony, Germany. An investigation is presented to elucidate the nature of the chemical interactions between uranium and the surface layer and cells of Bacillus shaericus JG-A12 using spectroscopic and microscopic methods.

Results from batch type experiments were modeled using the 2 SPNE SC/CE model developed by Bradbury and Baeyens. This work focused on the applicability of this model to the sorption of Np(V) on Na-montmorillonite under high saline conditions (0.1–3.0 M NaCl) in the pH range of 2–10 and in the presence of dissolved CO2 (p(CO2) = 10−3.3 atm). Under ambient air conditions two additional surface complexation species had to be taken into account, which are ternary species involving one carbonate ligand (≡SONpO2(CO3)2−, ≡SONpO2(CO3)Na−). The gained set of complexation parameters was successfully tested over a wide range of Np(V) concentrations (10−4 to 10−12 M) under Ar atmosphere and ambient air condition. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

Resonance ionization mass spectrometry is an efficient tool to detect minute amounts of long-lived radio-isotopes in environmental samples. Applying resonant excitation and ionization with pulsed laser radiation within a hot cavity atomizer enables the sensitive detection and precise quantification of long-lived actinide isotopes. Due to the inherently element selective ionization process, this method ensures ultimate suppression of contaminations from other elements and molecules. Nothosaurs form a subclade of the secondarily marine Sauropterygia that was well represented in late Early to early Late Triassic marine ecosystems. Here we present and discuss the internal skull anatomy of the small piscivorous nothosaur Nothosaurus marchicus from coastal to shallow marine Lower Muschelkalk deposits (Anisian) of Winterswijk, The Netherlands, which represents the oldest sauropterygian endocast visualized to date. The cranial endocast is only partially encapsulated by ossified braincase elements. Cranial flattening and lateral constriction by hypertrophied temporal musculature grant the brain a straight, tubular geometry that lacks particularly well-developed cerebral lobes but does potentially involve distinguishable optic lobes, suggesting vision may have represented an important sense during life. Despite large orbit size, the circuitous muscular pathway linking the basisphenoidal and orbital regions indicates poor oculomotor performance. This suggests a rather fixed ocular orientation, although eye placement and neck manoeuvrability could have enabled binocular if not stereoscopic vision. The proportionally large dorsal projection of the braincase endocast towards the well-developed pineal foramen advocates substantial dependence on the corresponding pineal system in vivo. Structures corroborating keen olfactory or acoustic senses were not identified. The likely atrophied vomeronasal organ argues against the presence of a forked tongue in Nothosaurus, and the relative positioning of external and internal nares contrasts respiratory configurations proposed for pistosauroid sauropterygians. The antorbital domain furthermore accommodates a putative rostral sensory plexus and pronounced lateral nasal glands that were likely exapted as salt glands. Previously proposed nothosaurian ‘foramina eustachii’ arose from architectural constraints on braincase development rather than representing functional foramina. Several modifications to brain shape and accessory organs were achieved through heterochronic development of the cranium, particularly the braincase. In summary, the cranium of Nothosaurus marchicus reflects important physiological and neurosensory adaptations that enabled the group’s explosive invasion of shallow marine habitats in the late Early Triassic. The distribution coefficients ( Kd) are determined for the sorption of Th(IV), U(VI), Np(V), Pu(III/IV/VI), and Am(III) in the system natural Opalinus Clay (OPA) from Mont Terri, Switzerland, and synthetic OPA pore water at pH7.6 as a function of solid-to-liquid ratio and element concentration. A linear sorption behavior under the chosen experimental conditions was obtained. The Kd values strongly depend on the oxidation state of the actinide. The Kd values for the tri- and tetravalent actinides are in the range of 29-159 m3/kg. U and Np in the oxidation states six and five, respectively, are weakly sorbed on OPA with Kd values of 0.04-0.05 m3/kg. The Kd values for the redox-stable Am(III) and Th(IV) are in the same range as for Pu(III) and Pu(IV) which are redox sensitive. The Kd value of Pu(VI) (13 ± 3 m3/kg) is about one order of magnitude lower than the Kd values of Pu(III) and Pu(IV), but still more than two orders of magnitude higher compared to the values obtained for U(VI) and Np(V). Diffuse reflection infrared Fourier transform (DRIFT) spectra have been quantitatively evaluated to determine unknown extinction coefficients as well as the number of active surface centers and the amount of adsorbed species. Sulfated zirconia with n-butane as probe gas was used as model system. For quantitative evaluation of n-butane adsorption at 323 K, the sulfate band S=O at 1400 cm−1 was chosen. During adsorption, this band is red-shifted to lower wavenumbers accompanied by a structural change of the band indicating isomerization reaction. By analyzing difference spectra and determining the areas of the selected band, the extinction coefficients as well as the number of active centers and the amount of chemisorbed n-butane were calculated. The quantitative evaluation results in a mean internal decadic extinction coefficient of 60 cm−1 µmol−1, an average amount of n-butane adsorbed to the sulfated zirconia of about 4 μmol, and a number of active centers of around 21 μmol/g. These results correspond very well with values from the literature obtained by microcalorimetry. Thus, this method is suggested to be transferred also to unknown systems of interest. The 2,2′:6′:2″-terpyridine ligand has literally shaped the coordination chemistry of transition metal complexes in a plethora of fields. Expansion of the ligand bite by amine functionalities between the pyridine units in the tridentate N,N'-dimethyl-N,N'-dipyridine-2-yl-pyridine-2,6-diamine ligand (ddpd) modifies the properties of corresponding transition metal complexes, comprising redox chemistry, molecular dynamics, magnetism and luminescence. The origins of these differences between ddpd and tpy complexes will be elucidated and comprehensively summarized with respect to first row transition metal complexes with d2–d10 electron configurations. Emerging applications of these ddpd complexes complementary to those of the well-known terpyridine ligand will be highlighted. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

Summary Sauropterygia, a successful clade of marine reptiles abundant in aquatic ecosystems of the Mesozoic, inhabited nearshore to pelagic habitats over >180 million years of evolutionary history [ 1 ]. Aquatic vertebrates experience strong buoyancy forces that allow movement in a three-dimensional environment, resulting in structural convergences such as flippers and fish-like bauplans [ 2, 3 ], as well as convergences in the sensory systems. We used computed tomographic scans of 19 sauropterygian species to determine how the transition to pelagic lifestyles influenced the evolution of the endosseous labyrinth, which houses the vestibular sensory organ of balance and orientation [ 4 ]. Semicircular canal geometries underwent distinct changes during the transition from nearshore Triassic sauropterygians to the later, pelagic plesiosaurs. Triassic sauropterygians have dorsoventrally compact, anteroposteriorly elongate labyrinths, resembling those of crocodylians. In contrast, plesiosaurs have compact, bulbous labyrinths, sharing some features with those of sea turtles. Differences in relative labyrinth size among sauropterygians correspond to locomotory differences: bottom-walking [ 5, 6 ] placodonts have proportionally larger labyrinths than actively swimming taxa (i.e., all other sauropterygians). Furthermore, independent evolutionary origins of short-necked, large-headed “pliosauromorph” body proportions among plesiosaurs coincide with reductions of labyrinth size, paralleling the evolutionary history of cetaceans [ 7 ]. Sauropterygian labyrinth evolution is therefore correlated closely with both locomotory style and body proportions, and these changes are consistent with isolated observations made previously in other marine tetrapods. Our study presents the first virtual reconstructions of plesiosaur endosseous labyrinths and the first large-scale, quantitative study detailing the effects of increasingly aquatic lifestyles on labyrinth morphology among marine reptiles. We studied the structures of UO2(CO3)34−, Ca2UO2(CO3)30, and Ba2UO2(CO3)30 using HF, MP2, and B3LYP methods. We obtained an unusual long uranyl bond for the UO2(CO3)34− complex by ECP calculations. This study shows that it is crucial to explicitly include the counterion(s) and the hydration water molecules in the calculation of the aqueous uranyl tricarbonate complex. The calculated structure of the hydrated Ca2UO2(CO3)30 has good agreement with the experiment. [Copyright &y& Elsevier]
