Abstract Microbial decomposition of soil organic matter (SOM) can be accelerated or reduced by the combined effects of carbon (C) and nutrient inputs through a phenomenon known as 'priming'. Tropical lowland and montane soils contain large stores of C and may undergo substantial future changes in C and nutrient inputs due to global change, yet how these inputs might interact to influence priming is poorly understood in these ecosystems. We addressed this question using soils from a 3400 m tropical elevation gradient which vary strongly in nitrogen (N) and phosphorus (P) availability. To determine how existing nutrient availability in different tropical soils regulates microbial activity, and whether microbial demand for nutrients leads to priming, soils were amended with simple and more complex 13C-labelled substrates in combination with inorganic N, P and N + P. Isotopic partitioning (13C in CO 2 and in phospholipid fatty acids; PLFA) was used to identify sources of C (substrate- or SOM-derived) in respiration and in microbial communities. Nutrient treatments did not influence the amount of substrate-respired C for any of the soils, but did affect the direction and magnitude of priming effects. For the upper montane forest and grassland soils, C addition had a relatively minor influence on the turnover of SOM, but N addition (with or without C) reduced SOM mineralisation (negative priming), suggesting reduced microbial N-mining from SOM when N was externally supplied. By contrast, in the lower montane and lowland forest soils, C addition increased SOM mineralisation (positive priming), but the response was unaffected by nutrient additions. The assimilation of 13C substrates into functionally active microorganisms revealed that C substrate complexity, but not added nutrients, strongly affected C-use within the microbial community: in both lowland and montane forest soils, fungi assimilated a greater proportion of the simple C substrate, while gram-positive bacteria assimilated a greater proportion of the more complex C substrate. Overall, our results have contrasting implications for the response of soil C cycling in tropical montane and lowland ecosystems under future global change. Global atmospheric methane concentrations have continued to rise in recent years, having already more than doubled since the Industrial Revolution. Further environmental change, especially climate change, in the twenty-first century has the potential to radically alter global methane fluxes. Importantly, changes in temperature, precipitation, and net primary production may induce positive climate feedback effects in dominant natural methane sources such as wetlands, soils, and aquatic ecosystems. Anthropogenic methane sources may also be impacted, with a risk of enhanced emissions from the energy, agriculture, and waste sectors. Here, we review the global sources of methane, the trends in fluxes by source and sector, and their possible evolution in response to future environmental change. We discuss ongoing uncertainties in flux estimation and projection, and highlight the great potential for multisector methane mitigation as part of wider global climate change policy. The soils of tropical montane forests can act as sources or sinks of atmospheric methane (CH4). Understanding this activity is important in regional atmospheric CH4 budgets given that these ecosystems account for substantial portions of the landscape in mountainous areas like the Andes. We investigated the drivers of net CH4 fluxes from premontane, lower and upper montane forests, experiencing a seasonal climate, in south-eastern Peru. Between February 2011 and June 2013, these soils all functioned as net sinks for atmospheric CH4. Mean (standard error) net CH4 fluxes for the dry and wet season were -1.6 (0.1) and -1.1 (0.1) mg CH4-C m-2 d-1 in the upper montane forest, -1.1 (0.1) and -1.0 (0.1) mg CH4-C m-2 d-1 in the lower montane forest, and -0.2 (0.1) and -0.1 (0.1) mg CH4-C m-2 d-1 in the premontane forest. Seasonality in CH4 exchange varied among forest types with increased dry season CH4 uptake only apparent in the upper montane forest. Variation across these forests was best explained by available nitrate and water-filled pore space indicating that nitrate inhibition of oxidation or diffusional constraints imposed by changes in water-filled pore space on methanotrophic communities may represent important controls on soil-atmosphere CH4 exchange. Net CH4 flux was inversely related to elevation; a pattern that differs to that observed in Ecuador, the only other extant study site of soil-atmosphere CH4 exchange in the tropical Andes. This may result from differences in rainfall patterns between the regions, suggesting that attention should be paid to the role of rainfall and soil moisture dynamics in modulating CH4 uptake by the organic-rich soils typical of high-elevation tropical forests. The need for smallholder farmers to adapt their practices to a changing climate is well recognised, particularly in Africa. The cost of adapting to climate change in Africa is estimated to be $20 to $30 billion per year, but the total amount pledged to finance adaptation falls significantly short of this requirement. The difficulty of assessing and monitoring when adaptation is achieved is one of the key barriers to the disbursement of performance-based adaptation finance. To demonstrate the potential of Bayesian Belief Networks for describing the impacts of specific activities on climate change resilience, we developed a simple model that incorporates climate projections, local environmental data, information from peer-reviewed literature and expert opinion to account for the adaptation benefits derived from Climate-Smart Agriculture activities in Malawi. This novel approach allows assessment of vulnerability to climate change under different land use activities and can be used to identify appropriate adaptation strategies and to quantify biophysical adaptation benefits from activities that are implemented. We suggest that multiple-indicator Bayesian Belief Network approaches can provide insights into adaptation planning for a wide range of applications and, if further explored, could be part of a set of important catalysts for the expansion of adaptation finance. Microbial processes have a central role in the global fluxes of the key biogenic greenhouse gases (carbon dioxide, methane and nitrous oxide) and are likely to respond rapidly to climate change. Whether changes in microbial processes lead to a net positive or negative feedback for greenhouse gas emissions is unclear. To improve the prediction of climate models, it is important to understand the mechanisms by which microorganisms regulate terrestrial greenhouse gas flux. This involves consideration of the complex interactions that occur between microorganisms and other biotic and abiotic factors.
