Abstract

The essentials of the theory of fractals and chaos are reviewed and then applied to the problem of density-wave oscillations in a boiling channel. It is shown that these mathematical techniques give valuable new insight into nonlinear thermal-hydraulic oscillations.

Abstract

This paper presents a nonlinear lumped-parameter analysis of density-wave and excursive instability phenomena in a boiling channel. The dynamics of the heated wall is also included. Both subcritical and supercritical bifurcations are detected, and the dynamics of the heated wall are found to be significant
