Summary Background & aims The associations between dietary magnesium intake and stroke and coronary heart disease (CHD) incidences are inconsistent and not established in Asian. We aimed to determine the association between dietary magnesium intake and the risk of stroke and CHD in a Japanese population. Subjects/Methods We studied 85,293 Japanese subjects by questionnaire at baseline (age 45–74 years, without cardiovascular disease or cancer in 1995 and 1998 for Cohorts I and II, respectively). The participants were followed until the end of 2009 and 2010 in Cohorts I and II, respectively. Dietary magnesium intake was estimated from a self-administered 138-item food-frequency questionnaire. Results After 1,305,738 person-years of follow-up, 4110 strokes and 1283 cases of CHD were documented. The multivariable-adjusted hazard ratios (HRs, 95% confidence intervals, 95%CIs) of CHD for the fourth and fifth quintiles of dietary magnesium intake were 0.70 (0.50–0.99) and 0.66 (0.44–0.97) in men (P for trend = 0.036), respectively, and third quintile of dietary magnesium intake was 0.61 (0.39–0.96) in women (P for trend = 0.241), compared with the lowest quintile in men and women. We observed no decreased risks of incident stroke in men or women with higher dietary magnesium intakes. Conclusions Higher dietary magnesium intake was associated with a reduced risk of CHD in Japanese men.

A finding between dietary pattern and cancer may provide visions beyond the assessment of individual foods or nutrients. We examined the influence of dietary pattern with colorectal cancer (CRC) among a Japanese population.A total of 93,062 subjects (43,591 men, 49,471 women) who participated in the Japan Public Health Center-based Prospective Study were followed from 1995-1998 to the end of 2012, during which 2482 cases of CRC (1514 men, 968 women) were newly identified. Dietary data was obtained from a validated food-frequency questionnaire between 1995 and 1998.Three dietary pattern was derived from principal components factor: prudent, westernized, and traditional pattern. After controlled for potential confounders, the prudent pattern showed a decreased association of CRC risk in men (HR for highest quintile vs lowest: 0.85; 95% CI: 0.72-1.00; P trend0.05), slightly more strongly with distal colon cancer (P trend0.05); but an increased risk of rectal cancer in women (P trend0.05). The westernized pattern showed a significant positive linear trend for colon (P trend0.05) and distal cancer (P trend0.05) in women. There was no apparent association of traditional Japanese dietary pattern on the overall or any specific sites risk of CRC.A prudent dietary pattern showed an inverse association with CRC risk in men, and a westernized pattern was related with a higher risk of colon and distal cancer in women.

Aims Coping strategies may be significantly associated with health outcomes. This is the first study to investigate the association between baseline coping strategies and cardiovascular disease (CVD) incidence and mortality in a general population cohort. Methods and results The Japan Public Health Center-based prospective Study asked questions on coping in its third follow-up survey (2000–04). Analyses on CVD incidence and mortality included 57 017 subjects aged 50–79 without a history of CVD and who provided complete answers on approach- and avoidance-oriented coping behaviours and strategies. Cox regression models, adjusted for confounders, were used to determine hazard ratios (HRs) according to coping style. Mean follow-up time was 7.9 years for incidence and 8.0 years for mortality. The premorbid use of an approach-oriented coping strategy was inversely associated with incidence of stroke (HR = 0.85; 95% CI, 0.73–1.00) and CVD mortality (HR = 0.74; 95% CI, 0.55–0.99). Stroke subtype analyses revealed an inverse association between the approach-oriented coping strategy and incidence of ischaemic stroke (HR = 0.79; 95% CI, 0.64–0.98) and a positive association between the combined coping strategy and incidence of intra-parenchymal haemorrhage (HR = 2.03; 95% CI, 1.01–4.10). Utilizing an avoidance coping strategy was associated with increased mortality from ischaemic heart disease (IHD) only in hypertensive individuals (HR = 3.46; 95% CI, 1.07–11.18). The coping behaviours fantasizing and positive reappraisal were associated with increased risk of CVD incidence (HR = 1.24; 95% CI, 1.03–1.50) and reduced risk of IHD mortality (HR = 0.63; 95% CI, 0.40–0.99), respectively. Conclusion An approach-oriented coping strategy, i.e. proactively dealing with sources of stress, may be associated with significantly reduced stroke incidence and CVD mortality in a Japanese population-based cohort.

Here we propose a novel coating technique with low-speed dip-coating for preparing metal oxide thin films from organic-additive-free aqueous solutions, where the film formation on the substrate is achieved via an evaporation-driven deposition during dip-coating of extremely low substrate withdrawal speeds below 1.0 cm min−1 in a thermostatic oven at 25–60 °C. Transparent, crack-free SnO2 and TiO2 precursor films were obtained from SnCl4 and TiOSO4 aqueous solutions, respectively, by low-speed dip-coating. The precursor films thus obtained were crystallized to SnO2 and TiO2 films by the heat treatment at 700 °C for 10 min in air.

The morphology of corannulene molecules encapsulated in a single-walled carbon nanotube (SWCNT) is addressed using atomistic simulations. Firstly, dynamic simulation (DS) of encapsulation of corannulene molecules into a SWCNT is performed using a molecular dynamics (MD) method. It is revealed that corannulene molecules encapsulated in a SWCNT tend to form concave-concave (CC) dimers, and these dimers make stacks tilting against the SWCNT axis or take an arrangement such that their convex surfaces face the inner wall of the SWCNT. This tendency arises from the fact that the van der Waals interactions between the convex surfaces of the corannulene molecules and the inner wall of the SWCNT dominate in their dynamic encapsulation into the SWCNT, and CC dimers are favored based on the energetics. Next, conjugate gradient (CG) energy minimizations starting from two kinds of initial arrangement of corannulene molecules in a SWCNT, concave-convex (CV) and CC/convex-convex (VV) arrangements, are performed. The CG energy minimizations confirm the result of DS that CC dimers are the structural motif of corannulene molecules in a SWCNT. From the final configurations of both the simulations, the tilt angles and intermolecular distances of the stacked molecules are calculated. With increasing the SWCNT diameter, the tilt angles decrease while the intermolecular distances remain almost constant. The tilt angles of the stacked corannulene molecules are approximately expressed by a semi-analytical formula which is derived on the basis of a geometrical constraint condition.

Within the pharmaceutical industry, the rapid identification, elucidation and characterization of synthetic or process impurities or degradants form an intense and a comprehensive undertaking. Advances in laboratory hardware and software are changing the way in which scientists work together to help resolve impurities in a quick and efficient manner. Although the industry trend toward externalization and outsourcing of development tasks provides a cost-effective method, the demand for improved productivity in laboratory workflows in drug development continues to be a high priority. This brings a need for new approaches for communication, collaboration and data management.

The effects of metal cations on the galvanic corrosion behavior of the A5052 aluminum alloy in low chloride ion containing solutions (tap water) were examined by electrochemical noise impedance. The electrochemical noise impedance and conductance were calculated by the power spectral density (PSD) of the galvanic current and potential. The oscillations in the galvanic current correlate well with the oscillations in the potential. The total charge (summation of galvanic current) during galvanic corrosion tests was suppressed by the addition of Ca2+, while it was increased with Mg2+ addition. Only a small effect on mean impedance and conductance was observed in solutions with Cu2+ and Mg2+, while addition of Ca2+ strongly influences both the mean impedance and conductance. These results may be explained by the passive film structure changes due to the metal cations. The results obtained in this study indicate that metal cations play a very important role in the corrosion behavior of A5052 aluminum alloys in tap water.

Seafood/fish intake has been regarded as a protective factor for coronary heart disease (CHD), while smoking is a strong risk factor. To examine whether associations between smoking and risk of CHD are modified by seafood/fish intake, we studied 72,012 Japanese men and women aged 45-74 years who completed 2 food frequency questionnaires, 5 years apart, during the period 1995-2009. After 878,163 person-years of follow-up, 584 incident cases of CHD (101 fatal and 483 nonfatal), including 516 myocardial infarctions, were documented. However, the relationship of dehydroepiandrosterone with the anticoagulant factor activated protein C, generated by the thrombin–thrombomodulin complex on vascular endothelial cells, remains unknown. This study aimed at studying the relationship between dehydroepiandrosterone and activated protein C generation in patients with Type 2 diabetes. Methods Sixty-two male patients with Type 2 diabetes were enrolled in this study. Data obtained from 40 healthy male subjects were used as controls. The plasma levels of dehydroepiandrosterone, the activated protein C–protein C inhibitor complex, high-sensitivity C-reactive protein and monocyte chemoattractant protein-1 were measured by enzyme immunoassays. Automated structure verification using 1H NMR data or a combination of 1H and heteronuclear single-quantum correlation (HSQC) data is gaining more interest as a routine application for qualitative evaluation of large compound libraries produced by synthetic chemistry. The goal of this automated software method is to identify a manageable subset of compounds and data that require human review. In practice, the automated method will flag structure and data combinations that exhibit some inconsistency (i.e. strange chemical shifts, conflicts in multiplicity, or overestimated and underestimated integration values) and validate those that appear consistent. One drawback of this approach is that no automated system can guarantee that all passing structures are indeed correct structures. The major reason for this is that approaches using only 1H or even 1H and HSQC spectra often do not provide sufficient information to properly distinguish between similar structures. Therefore, current implementations of automated structure verification systems allow, in principle, false positive results. Presented in this work is a method that greatly reduces the probability of an automated validation system passing incorrect structures (i.e. false positives). This novel method was applied to automatically validate 127 non-proprietary compounds from several commercial sources. Magnetically levitated carrying system has been developed. In this system, pinning force of high temperature bulk superconductor (HTSC) is used for the levitation and guidance. The magnetic rail is set on the ground, and flux from the magnetic rail is pinned by HTSCs. To increase levitation force, repulsive force of the permanent magnet is used. For the propulsion system, electromagnets are installed on the surface of the magnetic rail. Improvement of the propulsion force is studied. In the previous system, only flux of the permanent magnet of the carrier is used for propulsion. To increase propulsion force, that of the HTSC of the carrier is also used. Using this excitation method, the propulsion force is improved even though total number of the excited coil is the same.

We have developed the magnetically levitated carrying system. In this system, pinning force of high temperature bulk super conductor (HTSC) is used for the levitation and guidance. Four HTSCs are installed on the carrier. The magnetic rail is set on the ground, and flux from the magnetic rail is pinned by HTSCs. To increase levitation force, repulsive force of the permanent magnet is used. The hybrid levitation system is composed. The permanent magnet is installed under the load stage of the carrier. Repulsive force by the permanent magnet between the load stage on the carrier and the magnetic rail on the ground is used to support the load weight. Levitation and guidance one by pinning effect of the YBaCuO HTSC in the carrier is used to levitate the carrier body. The load stage is separated from the carrier flame and can move freely for vertical direction levitation. For the propulsion system, electromagnet is installed on the surface of the magnetic rail. In this paper, control method of running velocity of the carrier is studied. Propulsion force is given as follows; Air core copper coils are installed on the magnetic rail. Interaction between current of these coils and permanent magnets on the carrier generates propulsion force. Running velocity is controlled by current of the propulsion coils. It is also changed by position of the carrier and the load weight. From the results, stability of the propulsion system is given, and propulsion characteristics are improved.

We investigated the attractiveness of a synthetic form of the pheromone of the soybean stink bug, Piezodorus hybneri (Gmelin), under field conditions, and compared it with that of (E)-2-hexenyl (E)-2-hexenoate, a pheromone component of a competitor, Riptortus pedestris (Fabricius). Many adult stink bugs were attracted to traps baited with 100 mg of the synthetic pheromone (1: 1: one mixture of β-sesquiphellandrene, (R)-15-hexadecanolide, and methyl (Z)-8-hexadecenoate), but few were attracted to 1 or 10 mg. More than twice as many females as males were attracted to this male-produced pheromone. None of the individual pheromone components (30 mg) attracted conspecifics. In summer (June-July), when field P. hybneri were not in diapause, (E)-2-hexenyl (E)-2-hexenoate was more attractive to P. hybneri than the synthetic pheromone. The sex ratio of the adults attracted to the synthetic pheromone was highly female-biased, yet almost equal numbers of both sexes were attracted to (E)-2-hexenyl (E)-2-hexenoate. Most females attracted to both attractants were mated and had mature ovaries. However, adults attracted to (E)-2-hexenyl (E)-2-hexenoate were likely to have less food in their stomach than those attracted to the synthetic pheromone. In late autumn (October-November), when the bugs were in reproductive diapause, both attractants attracted many sexually immature female and male adults that had well-developed fat body. The synthetic pheromone also attracted a large number of conspecific nymphs. These results suggest that P. hybneri pheromone and R. pedestris pheromone component, respectively, have different functions for P. hybneri. The male-produced pheromone system of P. hybneri seems to be sex-related but to have other roles.

The positive-plasma-bias (PPB) method has been explored as a new option for the plasma-based ion implantation and deposition (PBII&D). In the PPB method, plasma is biased positive with respect to a target which is at ground potential. While it offers benefits such as handling of target during PBII&D processing and in-situ process monitoring, special considerations are needed to meet the necessary PPB conditions. In the present paper, fundamentals and applications of the PPB method that has been performed for years by the author's group are presented: First the working principle, geometry, potential and current distributions are explained. Then special features, possible merits and demerits are discussed. Finally the environment-friendly plasma cleaning and the dual-plasma ion process for insulator processing are presented as applications of the PPB method.

The availability of cryogenically cooled probes permits routine acquisition of data from low sensitivity pulse sequences such as inadequate and 1,1-adequate. We demonstrate that the use of cryo-probe generated 1,1-adequate data in conjunction with HMBC dramatically improves computer-assisted structure elucidation (CASE) both in terms of speed and accuracy of structure generation. In this study data were obtained on two dissimilar natural products and subjected to CASE analysis with and without the incorporation of two-bond specific data. Dramatic improvements in both structure calculation times and structure candidates were observed by the inclusion of the two-bond specific data. Copyright © 2010 John Wiley & Sons, Ltd.

Tryptophan is metabolized to a-amino-b-carboxymuconate-«semialdehyde (ACMS) via 3-hydroxyanthranilate (3-HA). ACMS decarboxylase (ACMSD) directs ACMS to acetyl CoA; otherwise ACMS is non-enzymatically converted to quinolinate (QA), leading to the formation of NAD and its degradation products. Thus, ACMSD is a critical enzyme for tryptophan metabolism. Phthalate esters have been suspected of being environmental endocrine disrupters. Because of the structural similarity of phthalate esters with tryptophan metabolites, we examined the effects of phthalate esters on tryptophan metabolism. Phthalate esters containing diets were orallygiventoratsandtheurinaryexcretedtryptophanmetabolites were quantified. Of the phthalate esters with different side chains tested, di(2-ethylhexyl)phthalate (DEHP) and its metabolite, mono(2-ethylhexyl)phthalate (MEHP), most strongly enhanced the production of QA and degradation products of nicotinamide, while3-HAwasunchanged.Thispatternofmetabolicchangeledus to assume that these esters lowered ACMSD protein or its activity. Although DEHP could not be tested because of its low solubility, MEHP reversibly inhibited ACMSD from rat liver and mouse kidney, andalso the recombinanthuman enzyme. Correlationbetween inhibition of ACMSD by phthalate esters with different side chains and urinary excretion of QA supports the notion that phthalate esters perturb tryptophan metabolism by inhibiting ACMSD. Quinolinate is a potential endogenous toxin and has been implicated in thepathogenesisofvariousdisorders.Althoughtoxicityofphthalate esters through accumulation of QA remains to be investigated, they may be detrimental by acting as metabolic disrupters when intake of a tryptophan-rich diet and exposure to phthalate esters occur coincidentally.

We investigated tryptophan–niacin metabolism in rats when fed with an excessive tryptophan diet. Male rat of the Wistar strain (3 weeks old) were divided into the four groups of five rats each, and one of the group was fed with a 20% casein diet added with 0, 0.5, 1, 2, and 5% tryptophan for 30 days. The last day urine samples (24-h urine) were collected for analyses for the metabolites of tryptophan such as kynurenic acid (KA), xanthurenic acid (XA), 3-hydroxyanthranilic acid (3-HA), quinolinic acid (QA), nicotinamide (Nam), N 1 -methylnicotinamide (MNA), N 1 -methyl-4-pyridone-3-carboxamide(4-Py), and N 1 -methyl-2-pyridone-5-carboxamide (2-Py). The urinary excretion of KA, XA, and 3-HA were increased according to the intake of tryptophan. However, the excretion of QA was almost the same in the groups between the groups of 2 and 5% tryptophan diets. The sum metabolites of Nam + MNA + 2-Py + 4-Py were almost the same in the 1–5% tryptophan diets. The value of (2-Py + 4-Py)/MNA decreased sharply in the 0.5 and 1% Trp diets. Therefore the adverse effects of dietary Trp were observed from the diet containing 0.5% Trp, which was calculated as 0.45 g/kg of rat body weight.

Biological effects of extremely low-frequency electromagnetic fields (ELF-EMF) on microcirculation were investigated in vivo by monitoring arteriole diameters in conscious mice. Measurements of blood vessel diameter were monitored 33 min non-stop before during and after exposure with ELF-EMF and every 389 ms blood vessel diameter were calculated.

We obtain a diagonal solution of the dual reflection equation for elliptic $A^{(1)}_{n-1}$ SOS model. The isomorphism between the solutions of the reflection equation and its dual is studied.

Anoxia tolerance of rice (Oryza sativa L.) seedlings was investigated using wild type (WT) and root hair defective mutant RH2. The elongation of both RH2 and WT roots was suppressed by anoxia, but this suppression was less in RH2 than in WT roots. The anoxic treatment increased the activity of alcohol dehydrogenase in both RH2 and WT roots, but the induction was greater in RH2 roots. These results suggest that anoxia tolerance of RH2 roots is greater than that of WT roots, indicating that root hairs may interfere with the anoxia tolerance of rice roots.

Beginning in 1966, the Patient Registration Committee of the Japanese Society for Dialysis Therapy has conducted a survey once a year on renal replacement therapy in Japan. As of 1983, the survey covered the life/death of patients in the survey years, as well as the case mix of individual patients. In 1990 several laboratory variables were added to the survey items. The present report summarizes the data from the 1993 and 1994 surveys. The Committee mailed out questionnaire forms at the end of the survey year to the heads of all dialysis facilities. Survey forms were returned from 99.6% of the dialysis facilities in the 1993 survey, and from 99.8% of the facilities in the 1994 survey. Some 143 709 patients were treated by renal replacement therapy in 1994 (7509 were treated by CAPD, and 131 016 by extracorporeal haemopuri- fication). The gross mortality rate was 9.5% in the same year. The mean values of the laboratory variables among 88 693 patients undergoing thrice weekly haemodialysis were as follows in 1993: Kt/V, 1.31 ±0.30; protein catabolic rate, 1.04 + 0.30 g/kg/ day; haemodialysis time, 4.12 + 0.50 h. In 1994, the variables were: predialysis serum creatinine concentra- tion, 11.54 + 2.85 mg/dl; predialysis serum albumin concentration, 3.91+0.55 g/dl; predialysis haemato- crit, 28.69+4.36%.

The prognosis for haemodialysis patients is reported to be more favourable in Japan than in Europe or North America. Consequently, evaluation of the death predictors for haemodialysis patients in Japan is of considerable interest outside Japan. The Patient Registration Committee of the Japanese Society for Dialysis Therapy annually surveys the individual patient case mix, laboratory data and important events occurring in the previous years. Thus, using case mix data and laboratory data (including Kt/V and protein catabolic rate) from the 1993 questionnaire survey and the individual patients' life/death statistics from the 1994 questionnaire survey, a logistic regression analysis was conducted on 53867 patients. The analysis indicated that important death risk predictors were: (i) advanced age, (ii) occurrence of diabetes mellitus, (iii) male sex, (iv) Kt/V lower than 1.8, (v) haemodialysis time less than 5 h, (vi) protein catabolic rate less than 0.9 g/kg/day, and (vii) percentage body weight decrease less than 4% and more than 8% during the first haemodialysis session of the week.

Background Quickness can be shown as whole body reaction time (WBRT) by measuring how quickly they can react for a stimulus. In addition, it is said that the onset timing of muscles contribute to stabilise joints and to prevent injury during the movement. Objective The purpose of this study is to clarify the correlation between WBRT and the onset timing of muscles during landing. Design Randomisation study. Setting Youth sports. Participants 15 healthy female college students volunteered in this study. Intervention WBRT was defined as the duration from light stimulus to the both feet apart from the floor. The onset timing of muscles were measured by bilateral landing from the 40 cm height box with the electromyography (EMG). EMG data were collected from vastus medialis (VM), vastus lateralis (VL), semimembranosus (SM) and biceps femoris (BF). The onset timing of the muscle was visually identified as the first point, which was the EMG amplitude of 100 ms after the start of landing movement that exceeded the mean baseline activity by three SD. The definition of the baseline was set as the EMG amplitude of the 100 ms after the toe-off from the box. Main outcome measurements The hypothesis was that there were the correlation between WBRT and the onset timing of muscles. Results The mean±SD of WBRT was 331.8±45.6 ms. VM onset timing during landing was 243.7±78.3 ms, VL was 259.6±75.5 ms, SM was 191.7±86.2 ms, BF was 237.5±73.8 ms. There were correlations between WBRT and SM and BF onset timings (p Conclusion This study identified the correlation between WBRT and SM and BF onset timing. It might be possible to make SM and BF onset timing occur faster by reacting to certain stimulus faster.

Japanese cedar (Cryptomeria japonica; CJ) pollinosis is one of the most common allergic diseases in Japan. B cell epitopes on Cry j 1, a major allergen of CJ pollen, have been analyzed by the specific monoclonal antibodies to Cry j 1, and most of these epitopes may be conformational, but no previous report has addressed the analysis of sequential epitope mapping with synthetic peptides. The main purpose of the present study is to identify IgE and IgG B cell epitopes on Cry j 1 by using a synthetic peptide approach in mice.We synthesized 35 overlapping peptides that cover the entire length of Cry j 1 and examined whether mouse IgE and IgG antibodies produced by immunization with Cry j 1 reacted to the Cry j 1 peptides.We found that mouse IgE and IgG antibodies reacted strongly to Cry j 1 peptide No. 15 ((141)GVEPVHPQDGDALTLRTATN(160)), though those antibodies did not react with other peptides. IgE and IgG antibody binding to peptide No. 15 was completely inhibited by Cry j 1 and the peptide. To determine the minimum epitope in peptide No. 15, we conducted an ELISA inhibition test. IgE and IgG antibody binding to peptide No. 15 was inhibited by smaller peptides of this peptide. We found the core of the epitope to be (145)VHPQDGDA(152).

A SAL (soft adjacent layer) bias piggy back type magnetoresistive (MR)/inductive head was examined. On measuring the transconducting characteristics of the tested MR/inductive head, the following conclusions were reached: (1) Absolute output of 600 mu Vp-p was obtained, when the read track width was 4.0 mu m, the medium speed was 6.4 m/s and the flying height was 0.15 mu m. Thus, the superiority of this head compared with an ordinary inductive head was confirmed. (2) Although the MR element did not have a center tap, it was found that with a second harmonic distortion of under -26 dBm the head was suited for practical use. (3) The error rate curve of a worst-case pattern had 40% phase margin of 1172 fc/mm data window at error rate 10/sup -12/. These results mean it can be used practically. This head is suitable for small-diameter high-capacity hard disk drives with 136 track/mm and 212 kB/mm/sup 2/ areal density corresponding to 100 MB in a 2.5-inch disk or 40 MB in a 1.8-inch disk. >

The purpose of this study was to ascertain whether 201Tl SPECT imaging of the leg is useful in precise localization of the ischemic compartment involved in chronic exertional compartment syndrome (CECS).Imaging and quantitative analyses of postexercise 201Tl SPECT leg examinations were retrospectively performed in nine patients with clinically diagnosed CECS and eight control subjects. Imaging and quantitative criteria for the ischemic compartment were decreased 201Tl perfusion less than the lower limits of normal, which were defined as 2 s.d. below the mean percentage uptake of the control subjects. The SPECT imaging results were compared with those of quantitative analysis, postoperative SPECT images and clinical diagnoses.Postexercise normal legs had nonuniform 201Tl distribution in both legs and in the four compartments. Lower limits of normal mean percentage 201Tl uptake were about 60% for the anterior compartment and about 50% for the other three compartments. Redistribution was observed in 67% of normal compartments in the control subjects. The SPECT images demonstrated 16 ischemic compartments in eight of the nine patients. The SPECT results were consistent with those of quantitative analysis. There were discrepancies between the clinical and SPECT diagnoses in six legs (33% of the 18 legs) of five patients. Postoperative SPECT demonstrated 201Tl perfusion was improved in all involved compartments for that fasciotomy was performed.Thallium-201 SPECT imaging of the legs can easily provide precise localization of the ischemic compartment, which is demonstrated as decreased 201Tl distribution on the stress image. This technique is promising for the screening and follow-up of CECS.

Age-related changes of IgG N-linked oligosaccharides isolated from normal human serum are reported for 403 individuals (male 227 and female 176), varying in age from 0 to 85 years. The IgG N-linked oligosaccharides were released from the protein by digestion with a glycoamidase and reductively aminated with the fluorescent reagent, 2-aminopyridine. The mixture of pyridylaminated oligosaccharides was separated at high resolution by HPLC using a reverse-phase column. From the results of neutral oligosaccharide analysis, agalactosyl glycoform and bisecting GlcNAc-containing glycoform were shown to increase with increasing age. Spearman's correlation coefficients were 0.503 and 0.473, respectively. Thus, in healthy people, an increase of both types of glycoforms correlates weakly with age. In addition, differences were demonstrated between male and female groups in their twenties. The quantity of agalactosyl glycoform was found to be lower in females than in males. No significant differences, however, were observed in the quantity of bisecting GlcNAc-containing glycoforms between males and females.

Transient numerical analysis of electrical signal injection into the surface charge-coupled device (CCD) is given regarding the potential equilibration method. The analysis is composed of the charging and discharging processes of signal charges, characterized by time intervals T C and T D of the respective input pulses. A concept of "setting time T S " explains how the mode of injection converts from the potential equilibration to dynamic injection, and determines an optimum T C . A concept of "residual effect of excess charges" is discussed in relation to sampling effect. The procedure to determine an optimum T D is also proposed. The optimum input timing is divided into two instances in accordance with the degree of the gate length L; L > µm. For the instances ( L > 5-8 µm) the timing condition is further split into two cases, depending on the biased potential difference V_{G1}-V_{BL} . The above conclusions can be applied to setting input pulses and the structure of CCD inputs designed for analog signal processing.
