Higher Education Institutions are expected to stimulate the innovation system and to contribute to the development of societies in a global perspective. Within this context, there is an increasing focus on internationalization. HEIs are developing institutional mechanisms to support internationalization while academics are expected to carry specific practices that allow them to improve the internationalization of knowledge production. At the same time, they are encouraged to engage with non-academic partners to co-produce and transfer knowledge, contributing, in this way, to economic and social development. Although there is some research on the impact of internationalization on academic entrepreneurship, studies on the effects in other dimensions of academic engagement with society are almost absent. This paper aims to fill this gap by analyzing the relationship between academics' internationalization practices and perceptions and the development of different types of academic engagement. Our analysis draws on quantitative analysis with data provided by an international survey (APIKS) and explores the Portuguese context. Findings show that the different practices and perspectives on internationalization impact differently on the way scientists engage. While there are positive effects of internationalization of research on engagement, the time academics stay abroad and the high focus on publishing in internationally high-rated journals may negatively affect academics' orientation towards the local community. This paper contributes to the debate on the role of the internationalization in the context of a knowledge-based society, considering different dimensions and a broad spectrum of knowledge-based engagement activities.

Metabarcoding is invaluable for understanding trophic interactions, enabling high-resolution and rapid dietary assessments. However, it requires a robust DNA barcode reference library for accurate taxa identification. This dataset has been generated in the framework of the InBIO Barcoding Initiative (IBI) and Agrivole project. The integration of these two projects was crucial, as Agrivole aimed to investigate the trophic niche of small mammals in Trás-os-Montes Region through DNA metabarcoding, which required a reliable plant DNA barcode library for this same region. Given the large number of species not yet represented in international databases, a survey of local plants was essential to fill this gap. Thus, this study created an accurate DNA reference database for the plants of the Trás-os-Montes Region of Portugal.The current DNA reference database contains 632 vascular plant samples, all morphologically identified and belonging to 435 species. This represents 14% and 38.7% of the total known plant species for Portugal and the study area, respectively.Of the 1781 barcode sequences provided in this dataset, 1099 contain new information (61.7%) at different levels: 254 (13.6%, ITS2: 41, trnL-ef: 126, trnL-gh: 87) are completely new to GenBank and/or BOLD databases at the time of publication, 438 (24.6%, ITS2: 59, trnL-ef: 173, trnL-gh: 206) are new records for a given species and 407 (22.9%, ITS2: 187, trnL-ef: 206, trnL-gh: 14) provide additional information (e.g. different bp length, intraspecific genetic variability); the remaining 682 sequences (38.3%) are equal (100% identity) to sequences already publicly available for the identified species. Overall, this dataset represents a significant contribution to the genetic knowledge of vascular plants represented in public libraries. This is one of the public releases of the IBI database, which provides genetic and distributional data for several taxa.All vouchers are deposited in the Herbarium of the Museum of Natural History and Science of the University of Porto (MHNC-UP) and their DNA barcodes are publicly available in the Barcode of Life Data System (BOLD), NCBI GenBank online databases and International Nucleotide Sequence Database Collaboration (INSDC).

Introduction: Recently, university counseling services have been faced with an increasing number of students seeking psychological support. However, human resources and time constraints limit the services to respond adequately. Recently, national guidelines for Mental Health Services in Higher Education recommended the stepped care approach to increase efficiency. The present study aimed to explore the implementation of a stepped care model in a Portuguese public university, analyzing students’ sociodemographic and clinical characteristics, and presenting the flow of the stepped care approach and the students’ waiting periods in each step. Methods: An observational study was conducted in the University of Coimbra’s health services between May 2019 and June 2021. Descriptive statistics were performed to describe the sociodemographic and clinical characteristics of the sample, the flow of the stepped care approach, and students’ waiting periods. Results: We enrolled 295 students in the present study. The findings of this study revealed that over 40% had a clinical diagnosis of anxiety or depressive disorders. In terms of students’ flow within the stepped care model, 82% of students sought psychological help through self-referral. Concerning the implementation of the stepped care model, results have shown that most students wait less than a month to access each step. Discussion/Conclusions: Although preliminary, our results suggest that the stepped care model might be a useful service organization, mainly in a community in which accessibility to services and speed of response are particularly important. Most students being self-referred highlight the importance of direct contact between the university community and the health services. Additionally, anxiety and mood disorders were the most prevalent diagnoses in our sample, which also points to the relevance of a stepped care approach, since other studies have highlighted its advantages for this kind of clinical population.

This work aims to contribute to a deeper understanding of cryptocurrencies, which have emerged as a unique form within the financial market. While there are numerous cryptocurrencies available, most individuals are only familiar with Bitcoin. This knowledge gap and the lack of literature on the subject motivated the present study to shed light on the key characteristics of cryptocurrencies, along with their advantages and disadvantages. Additionally, we seek to investigate the integration of cryptocurrencies within the financial market by applying a dynamic equicorrelation model. The analysis covers ten cryptocurrencies from June 2nd, 2016 to May 25th, 2021. Through the implementation of the dynamic equicorrelation model, we have reached the conclusion that the degree of integration among cryptocurrencies primarily depends on factors such as trading volume, global stock index performance, energy price fluctuations, gold price movements, financial stress index levels, and the index of US implied volatility.

Introduction: A distinctive bleeding history is the first diagnostic stage of congenital hemorrhagic diseases. Furthermore, since it is in fact an assessment of the patient’s phenotype, it is not a (mere) complementary diagnostic method or test - it is an integral and intrinsic step to establish the patient’s clinical history, which is a medical act. The International Society on Thrombosis and Haemostasis-Bleeding Assessment Tool (ISTH-BAT) is a standardized bleeding assessment tool used during the diagnostic workup of suspected bleeding disorders. This study aimed to translate and culturally adapt the ISTH-BAT questionnaire to the European Portuguese language. Methods: The translation and cultural adaptation were based on the International Society for Pharmacoeconomics and Outcomes Research Guidelines and initiated after obtaining permission from the authors. The process involved three English to European Portuguese independent forward translations and a back translation. Discrepancies were gradually resolved. A harmonized version was presented to hemophilia patients and hemophilia carriers for cognitive debriefing. Results: The forward and back translations did not produce important discrepancies. However, some issues were identified in the cognitive debriefing, which led to the cultural adaptation of medical terms for better understanding. Conclusion: A formal translation and cultural adaptation process ensures that the new version maintains the same concepts as the original. After translation, several changes were necessary to ensure that the questionnaire was understandable by non-medical patients. We propose a European Portuguese version of the ISTH-BAT, which will require validation in further studies.

Despite advancements in surgical techniques for anterior cruciate ligament reconstruction, some patients still experience rotational instability after surgery. Anterior cruciate ligament and anterolateral ligament reconstruction have been described using hamstring tendon autograft while preserving the insertion of the semitendinosus tendon. This article describes a combined anterior cruciate ligament and anterolateral ligament reconstruction using a hamstring tendon autograft with a suspensory button fixation.

Introduction and Objectives: Alpha-1-anti-trypsin (A1AT) is a glycoprotein mainly produced in the hepatocyte. A1AT deficiency is one of the most prevalent genetic disorders and the spectrum of it related diseases is quite wide. Severe A1AT deficiency predisposes individuals to Chronic Obstructive Pulmonary Disease (COPD) and liver disease. Our aim was to characterize clinically, biochemically and phenotypically a sample of pediatric A1AT-deficient (A1ATD) patients and to investigate whether there was any lifestyle change after diagnosis. Additionally, it was our goal to promote awareness to A1ATD among the medical community and to encourage the creation of a national pediatric registry and collaboration in the European registry. Methods: An observational retrospective study with analysis of the clinical records of all pediatric patients that had AAT measurement in our tertiary center between January 2010 and December 2019 and revealed levels < 93 mg/dl. Results: We enrolled 203 patients, 125 (61.6%) males. Median age at diagnosis was 2.93 years (IQR: 0.73-6.31). There was a family history in 18 patients (8.9%). The assessment of serum A1AT levels was motivated by: respiratory disease (121/203; 59.6%), liver disease (39/203; 19.2%), and family screening (6/203, 3%). The median serum A1AT concentration was 79 mg/dl (IQR: 68-85.4). Phenotyping in 47 patients (23.2%) revealed: MZ (12; 28.6%), MS (10; 23.8%) and ZZ (7; 16.7%). The prevalence of smoking exposure before and after diagnosis was 23.6% and 20.1%, respectively. Only 33% of patients underwent influenza vaccination after diagnosis. Discussion: In our sample, there was no significant change in the smoking exposure before and after diagnosis. It would be important to evaluate the impact of early diagnosis and the lifestyle changes on the long-term prognosis, as well as the creation of follow-up protocols in pediatric age. Larger, multicentric studies are needed to determine the real prevalence, the frequency of the main associated mutations, as well as the clinical consequences and follow-up approach required.

Introduction and Objectives: Suicidal ideation (SI), suicide attempts (SA) and non-suicidal self-injuries (NSSI) are frequent causes of admissions to pediatric emergency departments (ED). We aim to evaluate the trends of self-harm and suicidality in children and adolescents in a mental health ED between 2019 and 2021 and compare it with similar data extracted from two previous studies carried out in our department in 2008 and 2016. We also analyze the impact of the COVID-19 pandemic in admissions for these causes. Methods: We performed a retrospective, descriptive analysis of all patients admitted to our ED for NSSI, SI and SA during 2008, 2016 and from March 2019 to May 2021. To analyze the impact of the COVID-19 pandemic, we compared the number of admissions between March and May 2021 (post-pandemic) with the same period in 2019 (pre-pandemic). Results: The number of SA was significantly higher in 2008 (18.7%, p = 0.038), SI (6.4%, p = 0.001) and NSSI (7%, p = 0.001) were higher between March 2019 and February 2020. We observed an increase of almost double (98.43%, p < 0.001) the number of episodes in March-May 2021 (compared to the pre-pandemic period), with higher SA (p < 0.001), SI (p = 0.008) and NSSI (p < 0.001). Discussion: We found a rise in self-harm-related ED admissions in recent years due to an increase of NSSI and SI. We did not find an increase in SA. After the initial period of the COVID-19 pandemic, there was an increase of self-harm admissions. Our findings are in line with trends reported in the literature.

Este estudio de revisión sistemática de la literatura tiene como objetivo analizar la producción de artículos en portugués publicados entre 2019 y 2023 sobre el tema del emprendimiento en la Educación de Jóvenes y Adultos (EJA), a partir de la implementación de la Base Curricular Nacional (BNCC) de Brasil. La búsqueda se realizó en las bases de datos CAPES, SciELO y Google Scholar. En la recolección de datos se aplicaron los siguientes descriptores: emprendimiento, Educación de Jóvenes y Adultos y Base Curricular Común Nacional. Se trata de una investigación cualitativa con objetivos exploratorios del tipo de revisión sistemática de la literatura. En efecto, se identificó la necesidad de una organización curricular que vaya en dirección contraria al propósito de nuestros documentos oficiales, tomando en la diversidad de contextos y trayectorias de vida de los estudiantes.

No presente artigo, são apresentados três encontros com a fome durante atividades de pesquisa e extensão realizadas por profissionais e estudantes de Psicologia vinculados à Universidade Federal do Rio de Janeiro e à Universidade do Estado do Rio de Janeiro no âmbito do Serviço de Atendimento à Pessoa Custodiada. No primeiro momento, são apresentadas discussões sobre "encontros com a fome", apresentando no texto os atendimentos realizados pela equipe com pessoas que ingressam no Sistema Penitenciário em situação de insegurança alimentar, por vezes, sem ingerir alimentos há dias. O "segundo encontro" é com as prisões em função de furtos por necessidade (principalmente furtos de alimentos). Por fim, o terceiro encontro nos leva à discussão sobre a perpetuação da fome entre pessoas que estão custodiadas pelo Estado, em um fenômeno que vem sendo conhecido por "pena de fome". O esforço analítico é orientado metodologicamente pela cartografia, conforme as proposições de Deleuze e Guattari (1980) e a vinculação ao campo é concretizada pelo acordo de cooperação entre universidades públicas e atores vinculados ao Sistema de Justiça. A análise das articulações entre fome e sistema prisional ajudam a atingir o objetivo de reconhecer movimentações do colonialismo e racismo no Brasil nos últimos séculos, localizando a prisão enquanto operadora moderna dos mecanismos de dominação e violação de direitos da população negra e pobre no país, bem como alguns embaraços endereçados aos profissionais que ocupam esta política pública diante de um contexto de total desarranjo das possibilidades tradicionais de atuação.

Introduction Providing healthcare in emergency services is a multifaceted challenge that demands prompt approaches. Ensuring safety and efficacy becomes even more challenging in ‘remote locations’, referring to geographical areas located far from urban centres or densely populated regions, often characterised by insufficient access to services, infrastructure and communication channels. Despite the pivotal role of healthcare professionals’ skills and knowledge in risk management in these contexts, academic literature has largely overlooked this aspect. Thus, addressing healthcare professionals’ perceptions of risks within remote areas is crucial for informed decision-making and improved service administration.Methods and analysis This scoping review protocol adopts the methodology outlined by the Joanna Briggs Institute. The objective is to delineate the current scientific evidence regarding the perception of both direct and indirect risks associated with healthcare practice in remote emergency settings. Employing the Population, Concept, and Context dimensions, inclusion criteria were established for each dimension: Population—nurses or other healthcare professionals with overlapping roles; Concept—perception of risk; Context—remote community or site and emergency care. The search will encompass the Scopus, PubMed, LILACS, Cochrane, CINAHL and Web of Science databases. A specific time frame for the selection of articles was not delimited. Observational, quantitative, qualitative studies and reviews will be eligible for inclusion if they meet the predetermined criteria. Two reviewers will undertake the document review process. Eligible documents may be in English or Portuguese, and only those subjected to peer review will be considered for inclusion.Ethics and dissemination Ethical approval will not be necessary for this study as it entails a scoping review based on previously published evidence. The findings from the scoping review will be disseminated through scientific conferences and published in academic journals.

Maturity-onset diabetes of the young (MODY) is a subtype of monogenic diabetes and a rare type of diabetes, which accounts for 1–5% of cases and is often underdiagnosed. The importance of its diagnosis lies in the potential implications that it can have on disease management and offspring. We report a de novo KCNJ11-MODY case and the process of transition from insulin to sulfonylureas. A 24-year-old Caucasian woman was referred to the Endocrinology Department on account of newly diagnosed diabetes mellitus. Her past medical history was unremarkable; however, her family history was relevant, as three grandparents had diabetes. Blood tests showed elevated haemoglobin A1c (10.7%) and fasting glucose (278 mg/dL), prompting the initiation of insulin therapy. Further tests revealed a normal C-peptide level (2.75 ng/mL) and negative anti-glutamic acid decarboxylase and anti-insulin antibodies. The examination of past medical records revealed pre-diabetes since the age of 13. Genetic testing identified a heterozygous pathogenic variant p.(Glu227Lys) in the KCNJ11 gene. Excellent glycaemic control was achieved upon initiation of gliclazide, leading to the withdrawal of insulin treatment. KCNJ11-MODY is an extremely uncommon subtype of MODY, with only a few reported cases worldwide. This case is important, as it supports the use of sulfonylureas as an effective treatment for KCNJ11-MODY.

Neste artigo, realizamos uma proposta de integração entre o pensamento de Bruno de Latour, especificamente sobre o Fluxo Sanguíneo da Ciência, com a abordagem integral de Douglas Allchin para permitir possíveis avanços sobre a abordagem de Natureza da Ciência e suas implicações para a Educação em Ciências. Sendo assim, apontamos que o círculo de vínculo e nós do fluxo sanguíneo da Ciência foi proposto como sendo aglutinador de ambos os aportes, pois permeia todos os pontos da proposta de integração e pode possibilitar uma Educação em Ciências comprometida com um mundo melhor, sem ser reduzida a um cientificismo, mas apropriada de forma correta e coerente para o exercício pleno da cidadania de todos os discentes. Com isso, estamos cientes de que o processo de internalização da Ciência não será fácil e ocorrerá de forma gradual, pois só assim será possível o seu uso pelas pessoas em geral e, a partir daí aumentará a confiança na Ciência e a identificação de que ela não é a detentora de todas as verdades, mas homeostática, no sentido de manter em equilíbrio interno as convicções pessoais e, também, para explicar o mundo, sem sofrer variações com o efeito externo dos movimentos anticiência propagados por meio de Fake News em redes sociais.

In the 21st century, three betacoronaviruses (SARS-CoV, MERS-CoV and SARS-CoV-2) have emerged in humans worldwide as a result of animal spillover, causing severe respiratory infections and resulting in more than seven million deaths. In 2013, a novel Betacoronavirus closely related to MERS-CoV (Betacoronavirus cameli) was discovered in European hedgehogs (Erinaceus europaeus), raising questions on the possibility of hedgehog-to-human transmission. Hence, the present study aimed to investigate and characterize the presence and genetic diversity of coronaviruses in hedgehogs from Portugal, as well as their potential for cross-species transmission. To achieve this, fecal samples from 110 hedgehogs at two recovery centers and one environmental non-governmental organization were tested for coronaviruses using a broad-spectrum nested RT-PCR assay targeting the RdRp gene. Of these samples, 24.5 % tested positive, most belonging to the Betacoronavirus genus. However, the present study also reports, for the first time, Alphacoronaviruses in hedgehogs, showing 100 % identity with a Bat coronavirus (a variant of Alphacoronavirus miniopteri). The genome sequencing of one betacoronavirus-positive sample yielded 65 % of a full-length genome, with the closest homology (93.5 %) to Betacoronavirus erinacei from the United Kingdom. Computational protein-protein docking studies predicted the binding affinity between the spike protein of hedgehog coronavirus and cell receptors of mammal species that interact with hedgehogs. The results obtained raise the question of whether hedgehog CoV uses the same receptor as MERS-CoV or a different receptor to enter host cells. Thus, this study enhances our understanding of the epidemiology of coronaviruses, emphasizing the need for further investigation into cross-species transmission risks.

For over two decades, “penal populism” has been trying to explain the major developments in penal policy around the world. As a theoretical model, it is often seen as synonymous with an unrestrained growth of punishment-oriented thinking. This study discusses a critical issue involving the complex link between contemporary punishment and politics. Building upon Michael Freeden’s “morphological analysis” of ideologies, we examine the internal structure of populism. An empirical test of the “penal populism” thesis will be conducted in post-redemocratization Brazil (1980s). Criminal legislation passed during three populist governments will be analyzed to determine whether there was a correspondent expansion of punitiveness. We hypothesize that there is no necessary connection between populism and more punitive criminal policies. Thus, we propose a new understanding of “penal populism” as an authentic penal ideology or an ideology of crime control.

O artigo tem como objetivo apresentar estatísticas sobre a estrutura e os dados de perfil da população carcerária no Brasil e analisar as cartas de pessoas privadas de liberdade enviadas ao Departamento de Monitoramento e Fiscalização do Conselho Nacional de Justiça. Para tal, foi utilizada metodologia de análise de conteúdo. Os temas mais abordados nas cartas foram os pedidos de nomeação de defensor(a) público(a); progressão de regime, detração de pena, mutirões carcerários; garantia do direito à escolarização e ao trabalho; acesso à saúde e atendimento médicohospitalar; denuncia de tortura e maus-tratos. Conclui-se que, com a perda do direito à liberdade, os(as) apenados(as), na realidade, têm todos os outros direitos ameaçados.

Objetivo: Este estudo pretende identificar o clima e a cultura organizacional entre enfermeiros que trabalham em Ambulâncias de Suporte Imediato de Vida (ASIV). Métodos: Foi realizado um estudo descritivo, quantitativo e transversal com 81 enfermeiros portugueses que atuam em Ambulâncias de Suporte Imediato de Vida no Instituto Nacional de Emergência Médica (INEM). Os dados foram analisados pelo método de análise de componentes principais (ACP), seguido de uma rotação Varimax, e os modelos foram validados mediante os testes Kaiser-Meyer-Olkin e de esfericidade de Bartlett. Resultados: A análise fatorial produziu quatro fatores, a saber: Suporte (24,5%), Objetivos (13,6%), Regras (9,7%) e Inovação (8,01%), associados ao clima e à cultura organizacional. Enfermeiros com um diploma de graduação perceberam significativamente mais suporte do que aqueles com qualificações mais altas. O suporte também variou de acordo com o estado civil, revelando que enfermeiros casados tiveram uma percepção maior do que aqueles que coabitavam. Conclusão: O clima e a cultura organizacional contribuem de forma inequívoca para o desenvolvimento de um ambiente de trabalho saudável e seguro e são decisivos para a qualidade da assistência de enfermagem.

Métodos: Se realizó un estudio descriptivo, cuantitativo y transversal con 81 enfermeros portugueses que trabajan en Ambulancias de Soporte Vital Inmediato del Instituto Nacional de Emergencias Médicas (INEM). Los datos se analizaron mediante el método de análisis de componentes principales (ACP), seguido de rotación Varimax, y los modelos se validaron mediante las pruebas de esfericidad de Kaiser-Meyer-Olkin y Bartlett. Resultados: El análisis factorial arrojó cuatro factores, a saber: Apoyo (24,5%), Objetivos (13,6%), Reglas (9,7%) e Innovación (8,01%), asociados al clima y la cultura organizacional. Los enfermeros con un título de grado notaron que recibían bastante más apoyo que quienes tenían calificaciones más altas. El apoyo también varió según el estado civil, dado que los enfermeros casados tenían una percepción mayor del mismo que los que estaban en unión de hecho. Conclusión: El clima y la cultura organizacional contribuyen inequívocamente al desarrollo de un ambiente de trabajo saludable y seguro y son decisivos para la calidad de la atención de enfermería.

Aim: This study aims to identify the organizational climate and culture among nurses working in Immediate Life Support Ambulances (ILSA). Methods: A descriptive, quantitative, and cross-sectional study was conducted with 81 Portuguese nurses working in Immediate Life Support Ambulances at the National Medical Emergency Institute (INEM). The data was analyzed using the Principal Component Analysis (PCA) method, followed by a Varimax rotation, and the models were validated using the Kaiser-Meyer-Olkin test and Bartlett’s test of sphericity. Findings: Factorial analysis yielded four factors, namely: Support (24.5%), Objectives (13.6%), Rules (9.7%), and Innovation (8.01%), associated with organizational climate and culture. Nurses with an undergraduate degree perceived significantly more support than those with higher qualifications. Support also varied according to relationship status, revealing that married nurses had a higher perception than those cohabiting. Conclusion: Organizational climate and culture unequivocally contribute to developing a healthy and safe work environment and are decisive for the quality of nursing care.

As feiras livres se apresentam como um espaço para a prática comercial varejista, do produtor familiar, de produtos in natura e processados, sendo um dos principais ambientes de preservação da cultura local e de interação entre o rural e o urbano, especialmente importante para a economia de cidades interioranas. O presente estudo objetivou identificar as melhores práticas utilizadas nos ambientes organizacionais da feira livre do município de Iporá (GO) e do centro de comercialização em Barra do Garças (MT), por meio da ferramenta de gestão denominada benchmarking, sendo utilizadas, como procedimento metodológico, entrevistas com os representantes das feiras de Iporá e Barra do Garças, bem como aplicação de questionário a 30 feirantes de ambas as localidades. Constatou-se a existência de desafios para a implantação do centro de comercialização em Iporá a partir da percepção dos feirantes sobre a relevância da adequada estrutura física e do efetivo suporte da vigilância sanitária para o rearranjo do ambiente. Quanto a Barra do Garças, o centro de comercialização modificou o espaço físico e padronizou os processos, reduzindo o número de frequentadores e vendas dos produtos. Conclui-se que, em ambos os locais de comercialização, quaisquer alterações no “espaço feira” devem resguardar as particularidades da modalidade tradicional de produção e venda.

This bibliographic survey identifies teachers training models that address the teachers training for assignments in mathematics in the Elementary School with DICT. We use, as a theoretical foundation, the training models of José Contreras, and the documentary research methodology of the chronicle type. We have investigated a total of ten articles which were published between 2013 and 2022, in the SBEM journals, and in articles from the ENEM annals. The analysis showed the implicit predominance of the reflective training model for teachers. Thus, we point out the need for research that theoretically explains the training models being used and that addresses the use of DICT from the perspective of the critical intellectual model of mathematics teachers training.

This study sought to identify and discuss the explanatory models for approaching Archimedes' principle in Natural Sciences textbooks approved by the Programa Nacional do Livro e do Material Didático 2021. In addition, an explanatory model that can be implemented in Physics classes, based on the relationship between experimentation and mathematical and theoretical elements was proposed. Regarding the analysis of the textbooks, it was observed that the presentation of Archimedes' principle, in most cases, was disconnected from the theoretical foundation and supported by mathematical equations that are not properly explained. In turn, the explanatory model proposed here seeks to elucidate conceptual and mathematical aspects, contributing to a more reflective approach in High School Physics classes.

The myxoma virus species jump from European rabbits (Oryctolagus cuniculus) to Iberian hares (Lepus granatensis) has raised concerns. We assess the decline suffered by Iberian hare populations on the Iberian Peninsula and discuss the association between the effect of myxomatosis and the average abundance index, which we estimated by using hunting bags.

A simple, reusable and sensitive electrochemical sensor based on a gold screen-printed electrode modified with silver nanoparticles has been developed for the detection of nitrate in water. Scanning electron microscopy, square wave voltammetry and electrochemical impedance spectroscopy were used to characterize the modification of the electrode surface. The modified electrode with different silver nanoparticle loadings was also tested, as well as the influence of scan rate on the reduction of nitrate. The sensor exhibited a wide linear response to nitrate from 100 to 1500 µM and a detection limit of 7.7 µM, which is significantly less than the maximum contaminant level admitted in drinking water (800 µM). The reproducibility, repeatability and selectivity of the sensor have also been examined. The suitability of the proposed sensor for real sample detection was successfully demonstrated via recovery studies performed in spiked tap water samples. The proposed approach was used to determine nitrate in freshwater, and the results were in good agreement with those obtained from a commercial nitrate sensor. These advantages make the developed sensor a promising alternative approach for integration into an online monitoring system for water monitoring.

Hoje, o compartilhamento de informações alcançou níveis colossais que eram inimagináveis no século XX. Nesse contexto, as transformações sociais desencadeadas, principalmente, pelas TIC e pelo ciberespaço impactaram profundamente a área de defesa nacional com o surgimento da Guerra de Informação e da Guerra Cibernética. Diante disso, observou-se a necessidade de investigar se a formação do cadete da Academia Militar das Agulhas Negras (AMAN) contempla satisfatoriamente essas atividades. Justifica-se essa pesquisa pela constatação de que esses tipos de guerra possuem enorme potencial para provocar irreparáveis danos ao Estado-nação. Esta pesquisa buscou verificar o nível de conhecimento dos cadetes do 4º ano da turma de 2022 da AMAN sobre as operações de informação pela análise de Planos de Disciplina (PLADIS) e aplicação de questionário. Constatou-se a ausência de carga horária específica destinada às Capacidades Relacionadas à Informação: comunicação social e operações psicológicas. Em vista disso, sugere-se uma sistematização do ensino sobre operações de informação na AMAN e demais escolas militares.

No Brasil e em inúmeros países, as constituições parecem restringir o direito ao voto de presos e condenados criminais, excluindo-os temporariamente do corpo de eleitores. No presente estudo, investigamos, com base na “teoria do reconhecimento” (Honneth), a condição de invisibilidade social vivenciada por eles, buscando compreender como experiências subjetivas de ausência de reconhecimento podem motivar, psiquicamente, uma luta por mudanças sociais. Reconhecendo, entretanto, as dificuldades enfrentadas por tal grupo social, o presente estudo desenvolve uma interpretação constitucional evolutiva, apoiada na “metódica estruturante” (Müller), acerca da vedação ao direito de voto de presos e condenados criminais. É analisado o artigo 15 da Constituição de 1988, indo além de seu texto (elemento linguístico) para agregar, na concretização da norma, uma leitura sistemática de outros dispositivos constitucionais, além de dados importantes da realidade brasileira (elemento empírico), tais como o significado social de cidadania e o problema do crescimento da população carcerária no país.

BackgroundDepression is a highly prevalent psychopathological condition among older adults, particularly those institutionalized in nursing homes (NHs). Unfortunately, it is poorly identified and diagnosed. NH residents are twice as likely to fall as community-dwelling older adults. There is a need for more knowledge about the mechanisms and relationships between depression and falls. ObjectiveThis study aims to identify, analyze, and synthesize research on the relationships between depression and falls among NH residents. MethodsA literature search was conducted in October 2023 in the following bibliographic databases: MEDLINE ALL Ovid, Embase, CINAHL with Full Text EBSCO, APA PsycInfo Ovid, Web of Science Core Collection, the Cochrane Database of Systematic Reviews Wiley, and ProQuest Dissertations & Theses A&I. Clinical trials were searched for in the Cochrane Central Register of Controlled Trials Wiley, ClinicalTrials.gov, and the World Health Organization International Clinical Trials Registry Platform. Additional searches were performed using Google Scholar, the DART-Europe E-theses Portal, and backward citation tracking. The Newcastle-Ottawa Scale and the Appraisal tool for Cross-Sectional Studies were used to evaluate study quality. ResultsThe review included 7 quantitative studies published in 7 different countries from 3 continents; of these, 6 (86%) were cross-sectional studies, and 1 (14%) was a prospective cohort study. Results suggested high frequencies of depressive symptoms and falls among older adults living in NHs, and depressive symptoms were considered a risk factor for falls. The 15-item and 10-item versions of the Geriatric Depression Scale were the most commonly used measurement tools, followed by the Cornell Scale for Depression in Dementia and the Resident Assessment Instrument-Minimum Data Set 2.0. The prevalence of depression was heterogeneous, varying from 21.5% to 47.7% of NH residents. The studies used heterogeneous descriptions of a fall, and some considered the risk of falls, recurrent fallers, and near falls in their data. The prevalence of fallers was disparate, varying from 17.2% to 63.1%. Of the 7 retained studies, 6 (86%) reported a relationship between depression and falls or the risk of falls. Among the 19 other risk factors identified in the review as being associated with falls among NH residents were a history of falls in the last 180 days, >1 fall in the past 12 months, and respiratory illnesses. ConclusionsThere is a paucity of research examining falls among older adults with depressive symptoms in NHs. These findings should alert nurses to the need to consider depression as a risk factor in their work to prevent falls. More research is needed to gain a comprehensive understanding of fall risk among NH residents with depressive symptoms. International Registered Report Identifier (IRRID)RR2-10.2196/46995
