Abstract In vitro biotransformation (ivBT) facilitated by in vitro synthetic enzymatic biosystems (ivSEBs) has emerged as a highly promising biosynthetic platform. Several ivSEBs have been constructed to produce poly-3-hydroxybutyrate (PHB) via acetyl-coenzyme A (acetyl-CoA). However, some systems are hindered by their reliance on costly ATP, limiting their practicality. This study presents the design of an ATP-free ivSEB for one-pot PHB biosynthesis via acetyl-CoA utilizing starch-derived maltodextrin as the sole substrate. Stoichiometric analysis indicates this ivSEB can self-maintain NADP+/NADPH balance and achieve a theoretical molar yield of 133.3%. Leveraging simple one-pot reactions, our ivSEBs achieved a near-theoretical molar yield of 125.5%, the highest PHB titer (208.3 mM, approximately 17.9 g/L) and the fastest PHB production rate (9.4 mM/h, approximately 0.8 g/L/h) among all the reported ivSEBs to date, and demonstrated easy scalability. This study unveils the promising potential of ivBT for the industrial-scale production of PHB and other acetyl-CoA-derived chemicals from starch.

In China, the process of emasculation of seed maize usually occurs in August. To prevent self-pollination by removing the tassels from every few rows of maize and to ensure the production of high-quality hybrid maize seeds, resulting in the formation of distinctive stripe-like textural features that show up in high-resolution satellite images. These features can be used as distinctive features to differentiate seed maize fields from common maize fields. In this study, Beijing-3A1 satellite image data with a resolution of 0.5 m were used to identify seed maize fields in Zhangye City, Gansu Province. First, the extraction of maize plots in remote sensing images is performed using a modified U2-net with a new field boundary loss function. Second, a new feature named “histogram of stripe slopes (HoSS)” was developed for seed maize field classification. We compare the classification accuracy obtained using HoSS features with different classifiers using other conventional features. The results show that HoSS features exhibit superiority for both single-feature classification and feature set classification. The feature set including entropy and HoSS with the K-nearest neighbor classification model as the method chosen in this study achieved 93.7% accuracy in identifying seed maize fields.

Cropland is crucial for regional food security, especially in vulnerable areas like the Tibetan Plateau. Accurate monitoring was hindered of cropland distribution due to complex topography and diverse crop phenology, making it challenging to assess its agricultural sustainability. To address this, this study aimed to develop a cropland identification approach based on an optimal identification feature knowledge graph (OIFKG) derived from time series remote sensing data. Cropland OIFKG (C_OIFKG) enhanced cropland identification accuracy by 96.6%, with producer’s accuracy and user’s accuracy of 98.1% and 89.9% respectively for cropland. The total cropland area in the Tibetan Plateau for 2022 was estimated at 1,800,160 hectares, representing about 1% of the total land area, with a significant concentration in the northeastern Qinghai province and the Yarlung Zangbo River Valley of Tibet Autonomous Region. The total cropland area estimated in this study for the Tibetan Plateau lied within the range provided by two published land cover datasets, being 3.56% lower than one dataset and 16.4% higher than the other. The cropland identification approach proposed by this study reduced reliance on known samples, improving spatiotemporal generalization capability. In the Tibetan Plateau, where cropland distribution was exceedingly rare, the method still achieved promising performance in cropland identification, demonstrating its effectiveness on the assessment of agriculture sustainability in high-altitude regions with intricate landscapes. Moreover, further assessment of C_OIFKG's applicability in different regions and compatibility with multi-source remote sensing data is needed.

Defoliation and accelerating ripening are important measures for cotton mechanization, and judging the time of defoliation and accelerating the ripening and harvest of cotton relies heavily on the boll opening rate, making it a crucial factor to consider. The traditional methods of cotton opening rate determination are time-consuming, labor-intensive, destructive, and not suitable for a wide range of applications. In this study, the relationship between the change rate of the vegetation index obtained by the unmanned aerial vehicle multi-spectrum and the ground boll opening rate was established to realize rapid non-destructive testing of the boll opening rate. The normalized difference vegetation index (NDVI) and green normalized difference vegetation index (GNDVI) had good prediction ability for the boll opening rate. NDVI in the training set had an R2 of 0.912 and rRMSE of 15.387%, and the validation set performance had an R2 of 0.929 and rRMSE of 13.414%. GNDVI in the training set had an R2 of 0.901 and rRMSE of 16.318%, and the validation set performance had an R2 of 0.909 and rRMSE of 15.225%. The accuracies of the models based on GNDVI and NDVI were within the acceptable range. In terms of predictive models, random forests achieve the highest accuracy in predictions. Accurately predicting the cotton boll opening rate can support decision-making for harvest and harvest aid spray timing, as well as provide technical support for crop growth monitoring and precision agriculture.

On global average, the magnitude of hot temperature extremes increased less fast than the magnitude of cold extremes decreased, with much regional variability and a hotspot in the Middle East and North Africa, suggests a global analysis of extremes between 1980 and 2018.

Neurodegenerative diseases including Parkinson's disease (PD) cause many problems for the patient. Treatment options include the administration of chemical drugs, which are associated with many side effects. Therefore, the current study was aimed to investigate tanshinone IIA effects on the experimental model of PD in rats and to study the neuroprotective mechanisms of this natural product. After preparation of rats and induction of PD by 6-hydroxypopamine (6-OHDA), different concentrations of tanshinone IIA were administered to the rats for 10 days. Apomorphine-induced rotation and muscle rigidity behavioral tests were used to evaluate PD induction and to study the effects of tanshinone IIA. After separation of the hippocampus, biochemical parameters such as lipid peroxidation, protein oxidation, succinic dehydrogenase (SDH), super oxide dismutase (SOD), reactive oxygen species (ROS), malate dehydrogenase (MDH), catalase (CAT), reduced glutathione (GSH), lactate dehydrogenase (LDH), IL-1β, TNF-α, INF-γ, IL-10 cytokines and NF-ĸB protein expression were measured. The results showed that PD rats receiving tanshinone IIA improved their performance in behavioral tests. Decreased oxidative stress indices and increased antioxidant capacity were observed in the hippocampal tissue of PD rats receiving tanshinone IIA. Also, administration of tanshinone IIA to PD rats downregulated inflammatory cytokines TNF-α. IL-1β and INF-γ and decreased NF-ĸB protein expression. Tanshinone IIA has therapeutic effects in PD condition as results of antioxidant and anti-inflammatory properties. Therefore, this natural product is recommended in PD treatment.

Urban ecological quality evaluation attracts more and more attention in urban land use and ecosystem planning optimization due to continuity problems from rapid urbanization and population growth. Remote sensing was always considering contribute to the evaluation. However, accurate and efficient evaluation of urban ecological quality is being challenged, as traditional remote-sensing-based methods were mainly based on low spatial resolution data, pixel-based land cover classification, and vegetation condition factors, and ignored object-oriented high spatial resolution classification and urban landscape pattern. Thus, method for urban ecological quality evaluation based on high-resolution remote sensing is greatly needed to support spatially explicit decision-making in urban planning. In this study, a novel high-resolution remote-sensing-based method based on six ecological indicators from vegetation conditions and landscape patterns was proposed to evaluate urban ecological quality. The six ecological indicators were derived from high-resolution remote sensing data using an object-oriented land cover classification. Factor analysis indicated that the sensitivity of landscape patterns to ecological quality is relatively weaken. Therefore, vegetation conditions and landscape patterns were used as two respective variables to generate a linear evaluation model, with their weights calculated from the loadings of factor analysis, to evaluation urban ecological quality. The results showed that the proposed linear model, considering both vegetation conditions and landscape patterns, is effective and trustworthy, and can provide more suitable support to urban land use and ecological planning.

Currently, remote sensing crop identification is mostly based on all available images acquired throughout crop growth. However, the available image and data resources in the early growth stage are limited, which makes early crop identification challenging. Different crop types have different phenological characteristics and seasonal rhythm characteristics, and their growth rates are different at different times. Therefore, making full use of crop growth characteristics to augment crop growth difference information at different times is key to early crop identification. In this study, we first calculated the differential features between different periods as new features based on images acquired during the early growth stage. Secondly, multi-temporal difference features of each period were constructed by combination, then a feature optimization method was used to obtain the optimal feature set of all possible combinations in different periods and the early key identification characteristics of different crops, as well as their stage change characteristics, were explored. Finally, the performance of classification and regression tree (Cart), Random Forest (RF), Gradient Boosting Decision Tree (GBDT), and Support Vector Machine (SVM) classifiers in recognizing crops in different periods were analyzed. The results show that: (1) There were key differences between different crops, with rice changing significantly in period F, corn changing significantly in periods E, M, L, and H, and soybean changing significantly in periods E, M, N, and H. (2) For the early identification of rice, the land surface water index (LSWI), simple ratio index (SR), B11, and normalized difference tillage index (NDTI) contributed most, while B11, normalized difference red-edge3 (NDRE3), LSWI, the green vegetation index (VIgreen), red-edge spectral index (RESI), and normalized difference red-edge2 (NDRE2) contributed greatly to corn and soybean identification. (3) Rice could be identified as early as 13 May, with PA and UA as high as 95%. Corn and soybeans were identified as early as 7 July, with PA and UA as high as 97% and 94%, respectively. (4) With the addition of more temporal features, recognition accuracy increased. The GBDT and RF performed best in identifying the three crops in the early stage. This study demonstrates the feasibility of using crop growth difference information for early crop recognition, which can provide a new idea for early crop recognition.

Early and accurate prediction of grain yield is of great significance for ensuring food security and formulating food policy. The exploration of key growth phases and features is beneficial to improving the efficiency and accuracy of yield prediction. In this study, a hybrid approach using the WOFOST model and deep learning was developed to forecast corn yield, which analysed yield prediction potential at different growth phases and features. The World Food Studies (WOFOST) model was used to build a comprehensive simulated dataset by inputting meteorological, soil, crop and management data. Different feature combinations at various growth phases were designed to forecast yield using machine learning and deep learning methods. The results show that the key features of corn’s vegetative growth stage and reproductive growth stage were growth state features and water-related features, respectively. With the continuous advancement of the crop growth stage, the ability to predict yield continued to improve. Especially after entering the reproductive growth stage, corn kernels begin to form, and the yield prediction performance is significantly improved. The performance of the optimal yield prediction model in flowering (R2 = 0.53, RMSE = 554.84 kg/ha, MRE = 8.27%), in milk maturity (R2 = 0.89, RMSE = 268.76 kg/ha, MRE = 4.01%), and in maturity (R2 = 0.98, RMSE = 102.65 kg/ha, MRE = 1.53%) were given. Thus, our method improves the accuracy of yield prediction, and provides reliable analysis results for predicting yield at various growth phases, which is helpful for farmers and governments in agricultural decision making. This can also be applied to yield prediction for other crops, which is of great value to guide agricultural production.

Delineation of agricultural fields is desirable for operational monitoring of agricultural production and is essential to support food security. Due to large within-class variance of pixel values and small inter-class difference, automated field delineation remains to be a challenging task. In this study, a strategy is proposed to effectively address this issue. Firstly, a framework was developed using the Canny operator connected with the Watershed segmentation algorithm (CW) to quickly label the training dataset, which minimizes the workload of dataset generation in comparison with the commonly used manual vectorization. Secondly, a CW-trained deep semantic segmentation network, recurrent residual U-Net, was selected to mine the low level and deep semantic features. Finally, a boundary connecting method (to integrate fragmented boundaries) was used to generate the agricultural field boundary. The proposed methods are tested over smallholder agricultural landscape in Heilongjiang province, China, using Sentinel-2 imagery. Compared with the U-Net (overall accuracy (OA) 82.18%), the residual U-Net (ResU-Net, with OA 85.78%), traditional object-based image analysis (OBIA, with OA about 82%), and the existing 10-m resolution global land cover map (FROM-GLC10), the proposed method shows an improved performance (OA 89.28%, and Kappa 0.85). The successful application of the proposed method suggests that the recurrent residual U-Net model has great universality in agricultural field boundary extraction, and the automated technique has the potential of being applied to other regions.

Timely and accurate mapping crops is essential for agricultural management, policy making and food security. The smallholder agricultural systems lead to large number of fragmented and heterogeneous landscape, making fine crop mapping a huge challenge. Feature and classifier selection are two important influencing factors in crop classification. However, there are few systematic tests to determine the specific features and classifiers needed for heterogeneous agricultural landscapes. In this study, 24 candidate spectral features, 8 spatial texture features from the red-edge (RE) and near-infrared (NIR) bands, and 4 supervised classifiers (i.e. random forest (RF), support vector machine (SVM), artificial neural network (ANN), and maximum likelihood classifier (MLC)) were used for crop mapping. 60 spatially heterogeneous landscapes in Heilongjiang Province, northeastern China were selected as the study areas, evaluated by compositional heterogeneity (homogeneity index, HOI) and configurational heterogeneity (splitting index, SPLIT). The results summarized a look-up table for searching the optimum classification features and classifiers in different landscape, providing a reference for future crop classifications and preventing the consumption of computing time. The results revealed that (1) an optimal feature-subset (with reduced data volume by 65%) can achieve high-accuracy crop mapping in heterogeneous regions. (2) The optimum type and number of features and classifiers are landscape sensitive. When a specific accuracy was required, homogenous regions need a smaller number of features and a simple MLC could meet the requirement. (3) The impact of configurational heterogeneity on textural features is more significant, while compositional heterogeneity performs better on spectral Vegetation Indices (VIs). Findings from this study provide a general guideline for crop mapping in plains or fragmented landscape and areas with single or complex planting structure.

Cotton constitutes 81% of the world’s natural fibers. Accurate and rapid cotton yield estimation is important for cotton trade and agricultural policy development. Therefore, we developed a remote sensing index that can intuitively represent cotton boll characteristics and support cotton yield estimation by extracting cotton boll pixels. In our study, the Density of open Cotton boll Pixels (DCPs) was extracted by designing different cotton boll indices combined with the threshold segmentation method. The relationship between DCP and field survey datasets, the Density of Total Cotton bolls (DTC), and yield were compared and analyzed. Five common yield estimation models, Linear Regression (LR), Support Vector Regression (SVR), Classification and Regression Trees (CART), Random Forest (RF), and K-Nearest Neighbors (KNN), were implemented and evaluated. The results showed that DCP had a strong correlation with yield, with a Pearson correlation coefficient of 0.84. The RF method exhibited the best yield estimation performance, with average R2 and rRMSE values of 0.77 and 7.5%, respectively (five-fold cross-validation). This study showed that RedGreenBlue (RGB) and Near Infrared Red (NIR) normalized, a normalized form index consisting of the RGB and NIR bands, performed best.

Yellow rust (Puccinia striiformis f. sp. Tritici) and aphid (Sitobion avenae F.) are two major biotic factors threatening winter wheat growth in the main growing region in northern China. The goal of this study was to develop a remote sensing based approach to reliably detect and discriminate yellow rust and aphid infection. The study was conducted in the North China Plain in 2017 based on RapidEye satellite images using three supervised classification algorithms, the maximum-likelihood classifier, the support vector machine, and the random forest. An overall accuracy of above 60% for aphid and above 70% for yellow rust can be achieved using a single image (May 7 or 10, 2017) with any of the three algorithms. With multi-temporal images, the overall accuracies both increased for aphid and yellow rust (above 70% and above 78%). Using the image acquired on 23 May 2017, joint infections by yellow rust and aphid can be detected with satisfaction (>73% overall accuracy), although confusion exists between the two infections. This study demonstrates that winter wheat disease/pest infection can be detected with remote sensing technologies, providing decision support to farmers, insurance companies, and government organizations in the agriculture sector.

Abstract Background Haloacid dehalogenase (HAD)-like hydrolases represent the largest superfamily of phosphatases, which release inorganic phosphate from phosphate containing compounds, such as sugar phosphates. The HAD-like phosphatases with highly substrate specificity, which perform irreversible dephosphorylation, are always integrated into in vitro synthetic enzymatic biosystems as the last enzymatic step for the cost-efficient production of biochemicals. Therefore, identification and characterization of substrate specificity of HAD-like phosphatases are important for exploring their application. Results In this study, a hyperthermophilic HAD-like phosphatase from Archaeoglobus fulgidus (AfPase) was cloned, expressed, and characterized. AfPase was identified as a type I Mg2+-dependent HAD-like phosphatase with high optimal temperature and thermostability. Among the tested phosphate containing compounds, AfPase exhibited the highest catalytic activity on p-nitrophenyl phosphate, followed by dihydroxyacetone phosphate (DHAP). On the basis of the high catalytic activity of AfPase to generate 1,3-dihydroxyacetone (DHA) from DHAP, an in vitro synthetic enzymatic biosystem containing this phosphatase and other five enzymes was constructed for the biosynthesis of DHA from inexpensive maltodextrin in one pot. About 14 mM (1.26 g/L) DHA was produced from 10 g/L maltodextrin. Conclusions A hyperthermophilic HAD-like phosphatase from Archaeoglobus fulgidus was characterized carefully, and the success of an in vitro synthetic enzymatic biosystem containing this phosphatase provided a promising approach for DHA production from maltodextrin.

Early crop identification can provide timely and valuable information for agricultural planting management departments to make reasonable and correct decisions. At present, there is still a lack of systematic summary and analysis on how to obtain real-time samples in the early stage, what the optimal feature sets are, and what level of crop identification accuracy can be achieved at different stages. First, this study generated training samples with the help of historical crop maps in 2019 and remote sensing images in 2020. Then, a feature optimization method was used to obtain the optimal features in different stages. Finally, the differences of the four classifiers in identifying crops and the variation characteristics of crop identification accuracy at different stages were analyzed. These experiments were conducted at three sites in Heilongjiang Province to evaluate the reliability of the results. The results showed that the earliest identification time of corn can be obtained in early July (the seven leaves period) with an identification accuracy up to 86%. In the early stages, its accuracy was 40~79%, which was low, and could not reach the satisfied accuracy requirements. In the middle stages, a satisfactory recognition accuracy could be achieved, and its recognition accuracy was 79~100%. The late stage had a higher recognition accuracy, which was 90~100%. The accuracy of soybeans at each stage was similar to that of corn, and the earliest identification time of soybeans could also be obtained in early July (the blooming period) with an identification accuracy up to 87%. Its accuracy in the early growth stage was 35~71%; in the middle stage, it was 69~100%; and in the late stage, it was 92~100%. Unlike corn and soybeans, the earliest identification time of rice could be obtained at the end of April (the flooding period) with an identification accuracy up to 86%. In the early stage, its accuracy was 58~100%; in the middle stage, its accuracy was 93~100%; and in the late stage, its accuracy was 96~100%. In terms of crop identification accuracy in the whole growth stage, GBDT and RF performed better than other classifiers in our three study areas. This study systematically investigated the potential of early crop recognition in Northeast China, and the results are helpful for relevant applications and decision making of crop recognition in different crop growth stages.

Because canola is a major oilseed crop, accurately determining its planting areas is crucial for ensuring food security and achieving UN 2030 sustainable development goals. However, when canola is extracted using remote-sensing data, winter wheat causes serious interference because it has a similar growth cycle and spectral reflectance characteristics. This interference seriously limits the classification accuracy of canola, especially in mixed planting areas. Here, a novel canola flower index (CFI) is proposed based on the red, green, blue, and near-infrared bands of Sentinel-2 images to improve the accuracy of canola mapping, based on the finding that spectral reflectance of canola on the red and green bands is higher than that of winter wheat during the canola flowering period. To investigate the potential of the CFI for extracting canola, the IsoData, support vector machine (SVM), and random forest (RF) classification methods were used to extract canola based on Sentinel-2 raw images and CFI images. The results show that the average overall accuracy and kappa coefficient based on CFI images were 94.77% and 0.89, respectively, which were 1.05% and 0.02, respectively, higher than those of the Sentinel-2 raw images. Then we found that a threshold of 0.14 on the CFI image could accurately distinguish canola from non-canola vegetation, which provides a solution for automatic mapping of canola. The overall classification accuracy and kappa coefficient of this threshold method were 96.02% and 0.92, which were very similar to those of the SVM and RF methods. Moreover, the advantage of the threshold classification method is that it reduces the dependence on training samples and has good robustness and high classification efficiency. Overall, this study shows that CFI and Sentinel-2 images provide a solution for automatic and accurate canola extraction.

In North Korea, reliable and timely information on crop acreage and spatial distribution is hard to obtain. In this study, we developed a fast and robust method to estimate crop acreage in North Korea using time-series normalized difference vegetation index (NDVI) derived from the Moderate Resolution Imaging Spectroradiometer (MODIS) data. We proposed a method to identify crop type based on NDVI phenology features using data collected in other areas with similar agri-environmental conditions to mitigate the shortage of ground truth data. Eventually the classification map (MODIScrop) was assessed using the Food and Agriculture Organization (FAO) statistical data and high-resolution crop classification maps derived from one Landsat scene (LScrop). The Pareto boundary method was used to assess the accuracy and crop distribution of the MODIScrop maps. Results showed that acreage derived from the MODIScrop maps was generally consistent with that reported in the FAO data (a relative error

The spatial distribution of the population is uneven for various reasons, such as urban-rural differences and geographical conditions differences. As the basic element of the natural structure of the population, the age structure composition of populations also varies considerably across the world. Obtaining accurate and spatiotemporal population age structure maps is crucial for calculating population size at risk, analyzing populations mobility patterns, or calculating health and development indicators. During the past decades, many population maps in the form of administrative units and grids have been produced. However, these population maps are limited by the lack of information on the change of population distribution within a day and the age structure of the population. Urban functional regions (UFRs) are closely related to population mobility patterns, which can provide information about population variation intraday. Focusing on the area within the Beijing Fifth Ring Road, the political and economic center of Beijing, we showed how to use the temporal scaling factors obtained by analyzing the population survey sampling data and population dasymetric maps in different categories of UFRs to realize the intraday variation mapping of elderly individuals and children. The population dasymetric maps were generated on the basis of covariates related to population. In this article, 50 covariates were calculated from remote sensing data and geospatial data. However, not all covariates are associate with population distribution. In order to improve the accuracy of dasymetric maps and reduce the cost of mapping, it is necessary to select the optimal subset for the dasymetric model of elderly and children. The random forest recursive feature elimination (RF-RFE) algorithm was introduced to obtain the optimal subset of different age groups of people and generate the population dasymetric model in this article, as well as to screen out the optimal subset with 38 covariates and 26 covariates for the dasymetric models of the elderly and children, respectively. An accurate UFR identification method combining point of interest (POI) data and OpenStreetMap (OSM) road network data is also introduced in this article. The overall accuracy of the identification results of UFRs was 70.97%, which is quite accurate. The intraday variation maps of population age structure on weekdays and weekends were made within the Beijing Fifth Ring Road. Accuracy evaluation based on sampling data found that the overall accuracy was relatively high—R2 for each time period was higher than 0.5 and root mean square error (RMSE) was less than 0.05. On weekdays in particular, R2 for each time period was higher than 0.61 and RMSE was less than 0.02.

Many methods have been used to generate gridded population maps by downscaling demographic data. As one of these methods, the accuracy of the dasymetric model depends heavily on the covariates. Point-of-interest (POI) data, as important covariates, have been widely used for population estimation. However, POIs are often used indiscriminately in existing studies. A few studies further used selected categories of POIs identified based only on the nonspatial quantitative relationship between the POIs and population. In this paper, the spatial association between the POIs and population distribution was considered to identify the POIs with a strong spatial correlation with the population distribution, i.e., population-sensitive POIs. The ability of population-sensitive POIs to improve the fine-grained population mapping accuracy was explored by comparing the results of random forest dasymetric models driven by population-sensitive POIs, all POIs, and no POIs, along with the same sets of multisource remote sensing and social sensing data. The results showed that the model driven by population-sensitive POI had the highest accuracy. Population-sensitive POIs were also more effective in improving the population mapping accuracy than were POIs selected based only on their quantitative relationship with the population. The model built using population-sensitive POIs also performed better than the two popular gridded population datasets WorldPop and LandScan. The model we proposed in this study can be used to generate accurate spatial population distribution information and contributes to achieving more reliable analyses of population-related social problems.

Urban surface water mapping is essential for studying its role in urban ecosystems and local microclimates. However, fast and accurate extraction of urban water remains a great challenge due to the limitations of conventional water indexes and the presence of shadows. Therefore, we proposed a new urban water mapping technique named the Two-Step Urban Water Index (TSUWI), which combines an Urban Water Index (UWI) and an Urban Shadow Index (USI). These two subindexes were established based on spectral analysis and linear Support Vector Machine (SVM) training of pure pixels from eight training sites across China. The performance of the TSUWI was compared with that of the Normalized Difference Water Index (NDWI), High Resolution Water Index (HRWI) and SVM classifier at twelve test sites. The results showed that this method consistently achieved good performance with a mean Kappa Coefficient (KC) of 0.97 and a mean total error (TE) of 5.82%. Overall, classification accuracy of TSUWI was significantly higher than that of the NDWI, HRWI, and SVM (p-value < 0.01). At most test sites, TSUWI improved accuracy by decreasing the TEs by more than 45% compared to NDWI and HRWI, and by more than 15% compared to SVM. In addition, both UWI and USI were shown to have more stable optimal thresholds that are close to 0 and maintain better performance near their optimum thresholds. Therefore, TSUWI can be used as a simple yet robust method for urban water mapping with high accuracy.

In light of the need for fine-grained, accurate, and timely urban land use information, a per-field classification approach was proposed in this paper to automatically map fine-grained urban land use in a study area within Haidian District, Beijing, China, in 2016. High-resolution remote sensing imagery and multi-source social sensing data were used to provide both physical and socioeconomic information. Four categories of attributes were derived from both data sources for urban land use parcels segmented by the OpenStreetMap road network, including spectral/texture attributes, landscape metrics, Baidu Point-Of-Interest (POI) attributes, and Weibo attributes. The random forests technique was adopted to conduct the classification. The importance of each attribute, attribute category, and data source was evaluated for the classification as a whole and the classification of individual land use types. The results showed that a testing accuracy of 77.83% can be achieved. The approach is relatively good at classifying open space and residential parcels, and poor at classifying institutional parcels. While using solely remote sensing data or social sensing data can achieve equally high overall accuracy, their importance varies in terms of the classification of individual classes. Landscape metrics are the most important for open space parcels. Spectral/texture attributes are more important in identifying institutional and residential parcels. The classification of business parcels relies more on landscape metrics and social sensing data, and less on spectral/texture attributes. The classification accuracy can be potentially improved upon the acquisition of purer parcels and the addition of new attributes. It is expected that the proposed approach will be useful for the routine update of urban land use information and large-scale urban land use mapping.

Rice acreage estimation is a key aspect to guarantee food security and also important to support government agricultural subsidy system. In this paper, we explored a sophisticated method to improve rice estimation accuracy at county scale and we developed our approach with China Environment Satellite HJ-1A/B data in Hunan Province, a fragmented area with complex rice cropping patterns. Our approach improved the estimation accuracy by combing supervised and unsupervised classification upon decomposition of mixed pixels model, and the rice estimation results, validated by ground survey data, showed a close relationship (RMSE≈3.40) with survey figures, the estimated accuracy (EA) reached 83.74% at county level according to the sub-pixel method, and the accuracy can be increased about 12% compared to the pure-pixel method. The results suggest that decomposition of mixed pixels method has great significance to the improvement of rice acreage estimation accuracy, and can be used in mountainous and broken planting area. Wheat is the most widely grown crop globally and an essential source of calories in human diets. Maintaining and increasing global wheat production is therefore strongly linked to food security. In this paper, the evaluation model of winter wheat potential productivity was proposed based on agro-ecological zone and the historical winter wheat yield data in recent 30 years (1983-2011) obtained from FAO. And the potential productions of winter wheat in the world were investigated. The results showed that the realistic potential productivity of winter wheat in Western Europe was highest and it was more than 7500 kg/hm². The realistic potential productivity of winter wheat in North China Plain were also higher, which was about 6000 kg/hm². However, the realistic potential productivity of winter wheat in the United States which is the main winter wheat producing country were not high, only about 3000 kg/hm². In addition to these regions which were the main winter wheat producing areas, the realistic potential productivity in other regions of the world were very low and mainly less than 1500 kg/hm², like in southwest region of Russia. The gaps between potential productivity and realistic productivity of winter wheat in Kazakhstan and India were biggest, and the percentages of the gap in realistic productivity of winter wheat in Kazakhstan and India were more than 40%. In Russia, the gap between potential productivity and realistic productivity of winter wheat was lowest and the percentage of the gap in realistic productivity of winter wheat in Russia was only 10%.
