Increased frequency and intensity of storms, sea level rise, and warming temperatures are affecting forests along the eastern coast of the United States. However, we lack a clear understanding of how the structure of coastal forests is being altered by climate change drivers. Here, we used data from the Forest Inventory and Analyses program of the US Forest Service to examine structure and biomass change in forests along the mid-Atlantic, Southeastern, and Gulf coasts of the US. We selected plots that have been resampled at low (5 m) and mid (30–50 m) elevations in coastal areas of states from Texas to New Jersey, allowing us to determine change in live trees, standing dead wood, and downed dead wood biomass (and carbon) stocks across a decade at the county level. Forest area increased by 1.9% and 0.3% in low and mid elevation counties, respectively. Live tree biomass density increased by 13% and 16% in low mid elevation counties, respectively. Standing dead biomass decreased by 9.2% and 2.8% in low and mid elevation counties, respectively. Downed dead wood increased by 22% in low elevation counties and decreased 50% in mid elevation counties. Annualized growth and harvest were both higher (16% and 58% respectively) in mid elevation than low elevation counties, while annualized mortality was 25% higher in low elevation counties. Annualized growth in low elevation counties was negatively correlated to sea level rise rates, and positively correlated to number of storms, illustrating tradeoffs associated with different climate change drivers. Overall, our results illustrate the vulnerability of US coastal low and mid elevation forests to climate change and sea level rise, with indications that the complexity and rate of change in associated ecosystem functions (growth, mortality, and carbon storage) within the greater social environment (agricultural abandonment) may increase. Objective: Adults with serious mental illness have high rates of tobacco use disorder and underuse pharmacotherapy for tobacco cessation. In a previous randomized controlled trial, participants receiving community health worker (CHW) support and education for their primary care providers (PCPs) had higher tobacco abstinence rates at 2 years, partly because of increased initiation of tobacco-cessation pharmacotherapy. The authors aimed to determine the association between CHW-participant engagement and tobacco abstinence outcomes. Methods: The authors conducted a secondary, mixed-methods analysis of 196 participants in the trial's intervention arm. Effects of the number and duration of CHW visits, number of smoking-cessation group sessions attended, and number of CHW-attended PCP visits on initiation of tobacco-cessation pharmacotherapy and tobacco abstinence were modeled via logistic regression. Interviews with 12 CHWs, 17 patient participants, and 17 PCPs were analyzed thematically. Results: Year 2 tobacco abstinence was significantly associated with CHW visit number (OR=1.85, 95% CI=1.29–2.66), visit duration (OR=1.51, 95% CI=1.00–2.28), and number of group sessions attended (OR=1.85, 95% CI=1.33–2.58); effects on pharmacotherapy initiation were similar. One to three CHW visits per month across 2 years were optimal for achieving abstinence. Interviews identified CHW-patient engagement facilitators (i.e., trust, goal accountability, skills reinforcement, assistance in overcoming barriers to treatment access, and adherence). Training and supervision facilitated CHW effectiveness; barriers included PCPs' and care teams' limited understanding of the CHW role. Conclusions: Greater CHW-participant engagement, within feasible dose ranges, was associated with tobacco abstinence among adults with serious mental illness. There are twenty experimental forest and range sites (EFRs) across the southeastern United States that are currently maintained by the USDA Forest Service (Forest Service) to conduct forest ecosystem research for addressing ecosystem management challenges. The overall objective of this study was to use multiple gridded datasets to assess the extent to which the twenty EFRs represent the climate, ecosystem structure, and ecosystem functions of southeastern forests. The EFRs represent the large variability of climate conditions across the region relatively well, but we identified small representation gaps. The representativeness of ecosystem structure by these EFRs can be improved by establishing EFRs in forests with relatively low tree cover, leaf area index, or tree canopy height. The current EFRs also represent the forest ecosystem functions of the region relatively well, although areas with intermediate and low aboveground biomass and water yield are not well represented. The trends in climate, ecosystem structure, and ecosystem functions were generally consistent between the region and the EFRs. Our study indicates that the current EFRs represent the region relatively well, but establishing additional EFRs in specific areas within the region could help more completely assess how southeastern forests respond to climate change, disturbance, and management practices. Study Implications : This study across the experimental forests and ranges (EFRs) and the southeastern forest region fills the knowledge gap regarding climate, ecosystem structure, and ecosystem functions of EFRs in the context of the broader southeastern forest region. Understanding ecosystem functions and structures across the EFR network can help the Southern Research Station to address new research questions. Our study indicates that the current EFRs represent the climate, ecosystem structure, and ecosystem functions of southeastern forests well. Longleaf pine (Pinus palustris Mill.) is a conifer historically associated with an open forest ecosystem that extended across much of the coastal plain of the Southeastern United States. It now exists mainly in isolated fragments following the conversion of forests and the long-term disruption of the low-intensity fire regime upon which the species depends. Recent decades have seen efforts to restore longleaf pine forests by government and private landowners. This was reflected in analyses of national forest inventory data during two time periods, ca. 2009–2015 and 2016–2021, that showed increases in the estimated number of longleaf pine trees, the area of the longleaf pine forest type, and the number and area of planted longleaf pine, along with growth in mean plot-level longleaf pine carbon and importance value. At the same time, we found a decrease in the overall forest area containing longleaf pine, manifested across a variety of other forest types. These results point to a dynamic through which forests dominated by longleaf pine are becoming more widespread via restoration, while forests in which the species is a less important component are transitioning to other forest types or land uses. We also detected a decrease over time in the estimated number of longleaf seedlings across most states and forest types and a decline in naturally regenerated longleaf pine. To further assess regeneration trends in longleaf pine, we calculated the estimated proportion of small trees (seedlings and saplings) for the entire species and for seed zone sub-populations. We found a species-wide decrease in the proportion of small trees, from 82.1 percent to 75.1 percent. This reduction was most pronounced along the edges of the species distribution and could indicate less sustainable levels of regeneration in some areas.
