Abstract An investigation into Cu(II) adsorption from contaminated water utilizing a trickle tray column that has been upscaled from batch-scale adsorption was performed to understand the efficacy of the adsorbent when used in a continuous system—which is more common in actual use in an industry. The size of the functionalized fabric adsorbent selected in a pilot-scale is about four times larger than a batch-scale. The continuous Cu(II) adsorption was analyzed using three parameters: initial Cu(II) concentration in solution; inlet solution flow rate and number of adsorbent sheets in the column to estimate the adsorption process’s breakthrough curve results. The breakthrough curve results were fitted with three mathematical models by Thomas, Yoon-Nelson and Adams-Bohart to comprehend the mechanisms of the adsorption process. All three mathematical models can be used to reliably describe the continuous adsorption process using diverse conditions applied in this study. Overall results showed that PBMEP-g-PE/PP adsorbent using the trickle tray column demonstrated as high as 97% efficiency of Cu(II) adsorption during the first 6 h. Three-cycle reutilization of the adsorbent through a process of adsorption-desorption revealed that Cu(II) removal efficiency surpassed 70% after 6 h of each cycle, confirming the suitability of this system for practical application.

This study sought to identify the mechanism underlying the response to chitosan at the posttranslational level. Khao Dawk Mali 105 seeds were soaked in 40 mg l−1 of chitosan, and leaves of 2- and 4-week-old seedlings were sprayed with chitosan before starting osmotic stress conditions. Chitosan induced resistance to osmotic stress by enhancing shoot fresh and dry weights and maintained increased photosynthetic pigments. Leaf phosphoproteomes were examined using gel-free LC-MS/MS. Of the 60 phosphoproteins showed a significant difference in protein expressions under osmotically-stressed plants treated with chitosan. More than 40% of the phosphoproteins involved in signaling pathways, including OsCML12 calmodulin-related calcium sensor protein, ubiquitin carboxyl-terminal hydrolase 15, U-box domain-containing protein 45, HEAT repeat family protein, BRCA1 C terminus domain-containing protein, pectinesterase, protein kinase domain-containing protein, and receptor-like protein kinase. Chitosan enhanced rice seedling growth and drought resistance via multiple complex networks, including metabolism, transport, transcription, and signaling under osmotic stress.

The incorporation of carbon nanotubes into cementitious composites increases their compressive and flexural strength, as well as their electrical and thermal conductivity. Multiwalled carbon nanotubes (MWCNTs) covalently functionalized with hydroxyl and carboxyl moieties are thought to offer superior performance over bare nanotubes, based on the chemistry of cement binder and nanotubes. Anionic carboxylate can bind to cationic calcium in the hydration products, while hydroxyl groups participate in hydrogen bonding to anionic and nonionic oxygen atoms. Results in the literature for mechanical properties vary widely for both bare and modified filler, so any added benefits with functionalization are not clearly evident. This mini-review seeks to resolve the issue using an analysis of reports where direct comparisons of cementitious composites with plain and functionalized nanotubes were made at the same concentrations, with the same methods of preparation and under the same conditions of testing. A focus on observations related to the mechanisms underlying the enhancement of mechanical strength and conductivity helps to clarify the benefits of using functionalized MWCNTs.

Human α-defensin 5 (HD5) is a cationic antimicrobial peptide exhibiting a wide range of antimicrobial activities. It plays an important role in mucosal immunity of the small intestine. HD5 exerts its bactericidal activities through multiple mechanisms, one of which involves HD5 inducing the formation of pores in the bacterial membrane, subsequently allowing the peptide to enter the bacterial cytoplasm. Nevertheless, the precise molecular intricacies underlying its bactericidal mechanisms remain inadequately understood. In this work, the Potential of Mean Force (PMF) was computed to delve into the energetic properties governing the movement of HD5 across the lipopolysaccharide (LPS) membrane, which is a representative model of the gram-negative bacterial membrane. Our findings indicate that the most favorable free energy is attained when HD5 binds to the surface of the LPS membrane. This favorable interaction is primarily driven by the strong interactions between arginine residues in HD5 and the charged head groups of LPS, serving as the predominant forces facilitating the adhesion of HD5 to the membrane. Our analysis reveals that a dimeric form of HD5 alone is sufficient to create a water-filled channel in the membrane; however, achieving the complete lysis of the gram-negative bacterial membrane requires higher-order oligomerization of HD5. Our results suggest that HD5 employs the toroidal pore formation mechanism to disrupt the integrity of the LPS membrane. Furthermore, we identified that the primary energy barrier obstructing HD5 from traversing the membrane is localized within the hydrophobic core of the membrane, which is also observed for other defensins. Additionally, our study demonstrates that a mixture of HD5-LPS leads to a thinning of the membrane. Taken together, this work provides a deeper insight into the molecular intricacies governing the behavior of HD5 as it translocates through the gram-negative bacterial membrane.

Carnosine (CAR) and anserine (ANS) are histidine-containing dipeptides that show the therapeutic properties and protective abilities against diabetes and cognitive deficit. Both dipeptides are rich in meat products and have been used as a supplement. However, in humans, both compounds have a short half-life due to the rapid degradation by dizinc carnosinase 1 (CN1) which is a hurdle for its therapeutic application. To date, a comparative study of carnosine- and anserine-CN1 complexes is limited. Thus, in this work, molecular dynamics (MD) simulations were performed to explore the binding of carnosine and anserine to CN1. CN1 comprises 2 chains (Chains A and B). Both monomers are found to work independently and alternatingly. The displacement of Zn2+ pair is found to disrupt the substrate binding. CN1 employs residues from the neighbour chain (H235, T335, and T337) to form the active site. This highlights the importance of a dimer for enzymatic activity. Anserine is more resistant to CN 1 than carnosine because of its bulky and dehydrated imidazole moiety. Although both dipeptides can direct the peptide oxygen to the active Zn2+ which can facilitate the catalytic reaction, the bulky methylated imidazole on anserine promotes various poses that can retard the hydrolytic activity in contrast to carnosine. Anserine is likely to be the temporary competitive inhibitor by retarding the carnosine catabolism.

β-TCP was successfully synthesized using cuttlebone as a raw material, which was considered to be a calcium source. The calcium source from cuttlebone and phosphoric acid were hydrothermally prepared for 2 h at ambient temperatures. The effect of the sodium dodecyl sulfate (SDS) concentration (ranging from 0 to 6 critical micelle concentrations (CMC)) was assessed. Fourier-transform infrared spectroscopy and X-ray diffraction were employed to investigate the structural properties of the β-TCP. The particles presented irregularly shaped morphologies with variations in size. Brunauer–Emmett–Teller and dynamic light scattering were employed to evaluate the surface properties. No significant change was observed with variations in the CMC. We carried out preliminary investigations of the cell cytotoxicity against mouse fibroblasts. None of the conditions presented cell cytotoxicity. We can conclude that β-TCP prepared from cuttlebone can be used as a medical material.

The instability of human serum albumin (HSA) in urine samples makes fresh urine a requirement for microalbumin analyses using immunoturbidimetry. Here, we determined the ability of an aptasensor-based fluorescent platform to detect microalbumin in old, boric acid-preserved urine samples. Our results show that the cleavage site of protease enzymes on urine albumin protein differed from the binding position of the aptamer on HSA protein, suggesting the aptasensor may be effective for albumin detection in non-fresh urine. Furthermore, the addition of boric acid in urine samples over a short term (at ambient temperature (Ta) and 4 °C), long term (−20 and −80 °C), and following freeze–thawing (1–3 cycles) did not significantly affect albumin stability, as analyzed using the aptasensor. Therefore, boric acid stabilized has in urine stored over a short- and long-term. Thus, the aptasensor developed by us is applicable for HSA detection in boric acid-preserved urine that has been stored for 7-d at Ta and 4 °C, and in the long-term at −80 °C.

This study aims to identify novel chitosan (CTS)-responsive phosphoproteins in Leung Pratew 123 (LPT123) and Khao Dawk Mali 105 (KDML105) as drought-sensitive rice cultivars and differences in the CTS response. Rice seeds were soaked in CTS solution before germination, and 2- and 4-week-old rice seedlings sprayed with CTS before osmotic stress comprised the following four groups: (1) seedlings treated with distilled water; (2) seedlings treated with CTS; (3) seedlings pretreated with distilled water and subjected to osmotic stress; and (4) seedlings pretreated with CTS and subjected to osmotic stress. Phosphoproteins of leaf tissues were enriched using immobilized metal affinity chromatography (IMAC) before tryptic digestion and analysis via LC-MS. Phosphoprotein profiling analyses led to the identification of 4721 phosphoproteins representing 1052 and 1040 unique phosphoproteins in the LPT123 and KDML105 seedlings, respectively. In response to CTS pretreatment before osmotic stress, 22 differently expressed proteins were discovered, of which 10 and 12 were identified in the LPT123 and KDML105, respectively. These proteins are typically involved in signaling, transport, protein folding, protein degradation, and metabolism. This study provides fruitful data to understand the signal transduction mechanisms of rice seedlings pretreated with CTS before exposure to osmotic stress.

A simple and sensitive graphene oxide-mediated fluorescence quenching aptasensor is developed to quantify albuminuria in urine samples. The developed aptasensor used the specific target binding property of aptamer and fluorescence quenching property of graphene oxide to determine the concentration of human serum albumin in urine. The limit of detection of the developed platform is 0.05 µg.mL−1 and the detection range is 0.1–600 µg.mL−1, which covers the albuminuria concentration range present in normal human urine and the urine of the patient with chronic kidney disease. This approach can be modified to measure albuminuria using a high-throughput quantification platform and portable point of care testing. In addition, the production cost for one reaction is cheaper than those for the standard automated method. The motivation of this research work is to develop novel medical material from cuttlebone (calcium source) by L-rhamnose monohydrate (biosurfactant) for aged people. The process can be synthesized biphasic calcium phosphate which is eco-friendly to environment. One of the most important aspects for this work is to use cuttlebone as a naturally occurring calcium source from a local beach in Thailand. It usually contains 90% calcium carbonate. The objective of this research work is to synthesize the biphasic calcium phosphate by hydrothermal reaction. Critical micelle concentrations (CMCs) of 10, 20, 100, 500 and 1000 of L-rhamnose monohydrate were used to control particle size and shape. XRD revealed a mixture of β-tricalcium phosphate and hydroxyapatite powder. SEM reported that the size of particles can be effectively controlled by the addition of L-rhamnose monohydrate, and with the addition of surfactant, size uniformity was achieved. The cytotoxicity test was reported to be in the range of 70–75%. It was remarkable to note that biphasic calcium phosphate synthesized from cuttlebone with the aid of L-rhamnose monohydrate will be considered an excellent candidate as a scaffold material.

Several types of hematite nanoparticles (α-Fe2O3) have been investigated for their effects on the structure and properties of fly ash (FA) blended cement. All synthesized nanoparticles were found to be of spherical shape, but of different particle sizes ranging from 10 to 195 nm depending on the surfactant used in their preparation. The cement hydration with time showed 1.0% α-Fe2O3 nanoparticles are effective accelerators for FA blended cement. Moreover, adding α-Fe2O3 nanoparticles in FA blended cement enhanced the compressive strength and workability of cement. Nanoparticle size and size distribution were important for optimal filling of various size of pores within the cement structure.

Understanding in population structure of a plant’s root-associated microbiome is applied in good practices in agricultural activities to improve production yields and enhance plant immune responses. The molecular analysis of bacterial populations inhabited in soil faces difficulties in obtaining high yield and high purity of DNA, and different commercial DNA extraction kits have been developed for this purpose. This study focuses on the comparison of DNA extraction of six different rice root-associated bacterial consortium using three commercial kits with two key technologies, spin-column adsorption and magnetic bead adsorption. The quality and quantity of genomic DNA obtained from these extraction methods were analyzed and compared based on DNA concentration, DNA purity and efficiency to be used as a template for 16sRNA amplification. The results showed that the extraction kit with magnetic bead adsorption technology showed the highest concentration (101.32 ng/μl) compared to other DNA extraction kits (32.67 and 1.89 ng/μl). The purity values (A260/A280) were assessed by using Nano-drop spectrophotometer and resulted in purities of nucleic acids in the range of 1.4-1.7. Thus, it was concluded that the extracted DNA obtained from the extraction kit with magnetic bead adsorption technology can be valuable for molecular analysis of microbial communities present in the soil.

To investigate the effects of inclusion of palm kernel cake (PKC) in the diets on intake, digestibility, rumen fermentationcharacteristics, nitrogen balance and microbial N supply, five goats (initial BW = 20±1 kg) were randomly assigned to a55 Latin square design to receive five diets, T1 = concentrate with 15% PKC, T2 = 25% PKC, T3 = 35% PKC, T4 = 45% PKCand T5 = 55% PKC, of dietary dry matter, respectively. Plicatulum hay was offered ad libitum as the roughage. A metabolismtrial lasted for 21 days during which live weight changes and feed intakes were measured. Based on this experiment, therewere no significant differences (p>0.05) among treatment groups regarding dry matter (DM) intake and digestion coefficientsof DM, organic matter, crude protein, neutral detergent fiber and acid detergent fiber, except in T4 and T5 (45 and 55% PKC)which had lower (p0.05), however the concentration of total volatile fatty acids and protozoal populations were slightly lower forgoats fed inclusion of 45-55% PKC as compared with other treatments. Based on this experiment, it could be concluded thatthe optimal level of PKC in concentrate should be 15-35% for goats fed with plicatulum hay and that it may be an effectivemeans of exploiting the use of local feed resources for goat production.

This study was conducted to determine the quality and safety of raw goat milk in Lower Southern Thailand duringAugust to September 2008. Milk samples were collected from five farms in Songkhla, Yala, and Pattani Province of which thepH, acidity, specific gravity, milk fat, solid not fat, total solid, total plate count, Coliform count, and antibiotic residue weretested. The results did not show any significant difference (p>0.05) on pH and total plate count among samples from eachfarm. However, acidity, specific gravity, milk fat, solid not fat, and total solid varied between farms depending on feed supplyand management. Means of total bacteria count and Coliform count of most samples were in TACF standard quality (log3.720 cfu/ml and log 1.892 cfu/ml, respectively), except four samples had higher Coliform contamination. Additionally,a higher proportion (22.7 %) of samples with antibiotic residue was found.

This study aimed to apply simultaneous grafting induced by radiation to prepare adsorbents for removal of copper ions. Polyethylene/polypropylene nonwoven fabric (PE/PP NWF) was functionalized with bis[2-(methacryloyloxy) ethyl] phosphate (BMEP) via radiation-induced graft polymerization (RIGP) to yield PE/PP NWF- g -PBMEP adsorbent. Effects of parameters such as monomer concentration and radiation dose on degree of grafting and efficiency of adsorption were investigated. Chemical and morphological characterizations of the prepared adsorbents were performed. The optimum condition for the preparation of PE/PP NWF- g -PBMEP adsorbent suitable for the adsorption of copper ions was at 2.5% BMEP concentration and 1 kGy of gamma radiation by simultaneous RIGP. Batch tests were performed to examine the efficiency of copper ions adsorption, in terms of the adsorption kinetics, adsorption isotherm and mechanisms of the adsorption. Effects of initial concentration of copper ions, time and pH on the adsorption were investigated. Results were proved to fit to Freundlich isotherm model and pseudo-second order kinetics. The adsorbent's maximum adsorption capacity was 35.96 mg g−1 at 90 mg/L initial concentration of Cu2+ at pH 5. The reusability of the adsorbent was examined at 10 mg/L initial concentration of copper ions. The adsorption/desorption study showed that the adsorbents can be reused for four cycles with effective performance for Cu(II) ions removal from aqueous solution.
