Abstract: A study of the two body decays $B^\pm\rightarrow X_{c\bar c}K^\pm$, where X$_{c\bar c}$ refers to one charmonium state, is reported by BaBar collaboration using a data sample of 424 fb$^{-1}$. The absolute determination of branching fractions for these decays are significantly improved compared to previous BaBaR measurements. Evidence is found for the decay $B^+\rightarrow X(3872)K^+$ at the $3\sigma$ level. The absolute branching fraction ${\cal B}(B^+\rightarrow X(3872)K^+) = (2.1\pm0.6({\rm stat})\pm0.3({\rm syst}))\times 10^{-4}$ is measured for the first time. It follows that ${\cal B}(X(3872)\rightarrow J/\psi\pi^+\pi^-)=(4.1\pm1.3)\%$, supporting the hypothesis of a molecular component for this resonance., Comment: 8 pages 6 figures

Abstract: We describe a portable readout system for an X-Ray hybrid detector based on the Medipix2 pixei readout chip. The Medipix2 chip (256 x 256 square pixels with 55 [micro]m pitch) is bump-bonded with a pixellated Silicon sensor 300-micron thick. The readout system consists of a simple small size electronic card based on a single powerful microcontroiler and can be connected to a PC through the widespread Universal Serial Bus (USB) interface. The reduced size of the final card (3.8 cm x 4.8 cm) makes it suitable for special applications like dental radiology. Abstract: The BaBar Collaboration has operated a system covering over 2000 [m.sup.2] with resistive plate chambers for nearly three years. The chambers are constructed of bakelite sheets separated by 2 mm. The inner surfaces are coated with linseed oil. This system provides muon and neutral hadron detection for BaBar. Installation and commissioning were completed in 1998, and operation began mid-1999. While initial performance of the system reached design, over time, a significant fraction of the resistive plate chambers demonstrated significant degradation, marked by increased currents and reduced efficiency. A coordinated investigative effort has identified many of the elements responsible for the degradation. Index Terms--Gas discharge, particle tracking, radiation detectors.

Abstract: This paper describes an aerogel threshold particle identification detector developed for use in BABAR, the experiment to be run at the asymmetric [e.sup.+][e.sup.-] B-factory PEP-II under construction at the Stanford Linear Accelerator Center (SLAC). Results of extensive tests,performed at the CERN PS indicate that this detector is capable of separating pious from below-threshold particles in a wide momentum range. The detector is read by a new version of a hybrid photon detector (HPD). The HPD has been chosen because of its excellent behavior in high magnetic fields, where it can be successfully exploited to preserve the required particle identification (PID) performance.

Abstract: 1 - Studying the expressed proteome in mussel tissues is important to understand many different biological, physiological and ecological aspects that may be of advantage in shellfish rearing, encompassing growth cycle, food safety and traceability as well as understanding the biological effects of environmental pollution and climate change. 2 - The present work attempted to accomplish a systematic characterization of the foot muscle proteome of M. galloprovincialis, to gather data about its variability in physiological conditions occurring in different environments of mussel rearing and to identify a putative set of protein biomarkers that may be significantly correlated to environmental factors. 3 - A total of 360 mussels were sampled from three different lagoons of Sardinia, each one characterized by its different environmental and ecological system. According to a double latin square design, a smaller subgroup of 54 mussels that was representative of the original population was submitted to proteomics analysis and trace metals quantification. Classical and multivariate statistics was performed to correlate protein expression data to trace metal content and to environmental parameters recorded in situ. 4 - A protein expression pattern of 79 protein was identified as related to the response to environmental stressors like dissolved oxygen, water acidity, temperature and trace metals. 5 - The identified proteins are cytoskeletal proteins (α-tubulin, β-tubulin, myosin light chains and tropomyosin) or are involved in metabolic pathways (fructose bisphosphate aldolase), in energy pathways (cytosolic malate dehydrogenase and arginine kinase), in antioxidant defense (protein disulfide isomerase) and in protein turnover (different isoforms of the heat shock proteins Hsp70 and the Hsc71); also the histone protein H2B is reported. 6 - Our preliminary results show that there is correlation between the expressed protein pattern and the environmental conditions, confirming the findings of other proteomics works carried out on different mussel tissues and other marine invertebrates. Further validation procedures of the identified correlations must be accomplished in order to regard the identified proteins as biomarkers for environmental pollution and climate change. Abstract: Abstract: The clotting of milk in cheese making is a key passage obtained by the use of enzymes or rennet. Several types of rennet are commercially available, they differ both on their origin (animal, vegetable, microbial and recombinant from genetically modified microorganism) and their physical state (liquid, powder or paste). Usually rennet is derived from the abomasa (fourth stomach or vell) of unweaned calves. Commercial preparations of calf rennet, available as liquid or powdered form, contains chymosin and a different number of proteases such as: pepsin A, gastricsin or pepsin B. This rennet do not contain lipolytic enzymes, which are denatured during the activation process of chymosin and pepsin zymogens. In Mediterranean countries, is common the use of lamb or kid rennet paste, always obtained from the abomasa of these small ruminants. Lamb rennet paste, besides milk-clotting and proteolytic enzymes (chimosin and pepsins), also contains a complex system of lipolytic enzymes. Lamb rennet paste is used in the production of some PDO traditional sheep milk cheeses, such as Idiazabal and Roncal in Spain, Fiore Sardo, Pecorino Romano, Canestrato Pugliese in Italy and Feta in Greece. The aim of this review is to summarize the current knowledge in lamb rennet paste including methods of preparation, enzymatic composition and factors influencing it, analytical aspects related to the enzymatic composition, proteolysis, lipolysis and sensory characteristics of cheeses. Abstract: Abstract: Production of typical dairy products from goats and ewes using local and traditional resources, plays a direct role in biodiversity enhancement. The breeding of dairy goats and sheep is characteristic of marginal and less favourite areas, where local breeds must adapt to local resources. Therefore, in these areas, typical products have been developed according to local resources available. The production of cheese with particular characteristics can be carried out only if genetic diversity in sheep and goat rearing is retained. In the European Community the originality of the goat and sheep milk products is protected by the legislation on the Protected Designation of Origin (PDO) and the Protected Geographic Indications (PGI). These designations constitute an element for the protection of the biodiversity of a territory (geological, pedological, climatical), plants, animals and microbes, practices and production systems, linked to the history and the local culture. On the other hand they assure suitable income for the rural population, protecting the products with a denomination against a competition based on low prices. International rules are opportune in order to protect the typical products, their specific characteristics and their biodiversity, encouraging the permanent residence of the population in the rural areas, especially in the less favourite areas. Milk composition, and especially proteins and fat, may vary according to genetic diversity of the animals and different feeding systems, giving peculiar features to the milk utilized to make typical cheeses. The paste rennet, usually produced by shepherds themselves from the abomasum of the lambs or kids of their flock, or the vegetable rennet from the cardoon (Cynara cardunculus) flowers locally harvested, are technological factors that strongly influence the quality of the local dairy products. Furthermore, the microbiological features and diversity in milk, starters and cheeses, with a main focus on the interaction with the environment and the exigency to preserve the microbiological diversity will be also reviewed. Abstract: Abstract: Two rennet pastes were prepared from lambs on different diets, and then, together with a commercial lamb rennet paste, were used to produce protected designation of origin (PDO) Pecorino Romano cheeses. Chymosin activity and lipolytic activity were higher in the prepared rennets than in the commercial rennet. Lipolysis was greatest in cheese produced with one of the prepared rennets. Both quantitative and qualitative differences in free fatty acids were found in the cheeses. The taste of cheeses made with the prepared rennets was preferred by an expert sensory panel and also considered more piquant than that of cheese made with commercial rennet. The results indicate that both the diet of the lambs and slaughtering conditions should be regulated to produce rennet that preserves the traditional characteristics of PDO Pecorino Romano cheese. Abstract: We report on analyses of tau lepton decays $τ^{−}→ηK^{−}ν_{τ}$ and $τ^{−}→ηπ^{−}ν_{τ}$, with $η→π^{+}π^{−}π^{0}$, using $470 fb^{−1}$ of data from the BABAR experiment at PEP-II, collected at center-of-mass energies at and near the $Υ(4S)$ resonance. We measure the branching fraction for the $τ^{−}→ηK^{−}ν_{τ}$ decay mode, $ℬ(τ^{−}→ηK^{−}ν_{τ})=(1.42±0.11(stat)±0.07(syst))×10^{−4}$, and report a 95% confidence level upper limit for the second-class current process $τ^{−}→ηπ^{−}ν_{τ}$, $ℬ(τ^{−}→ηπ^{−}ν_{τ})<9.9×10^{−5}$., Physics

Abstract: We present a measurement of the branching fractions of the 22 decay channels of the $B^0$ and $B^+$ mesons to $\overline{D}^{(*)}D^{(*)}K$, where the $D^{(*)}$ and $\overline{D}^{(*)}$ mesons are fully reconstructed. Summing the 10 neutral modes and the 12 charged modes, the branching fractions are found to be $ℬ(B^{0}→\overline{D}^{(*)}D^{(*)}K)=(3.68±0.10±0.24)\%$ and $ℬ(B^{+}→\overline{D}^{(*)}D^{(*)}K)=(4.05±0.11±0.28)\%$, where the first uncertainties are statistical and the second systematic. The results are based on $429 fb^{−1}$ of data containing $471×10^{6}B\overline{B}$ pairs collected at the $Υ(4S)$ resonance with the BABAR detector at the SLAC National Accelerator Laboratory., Physics

Abstract: We present an analysis of exclusive charmless semileptonic B-meson decays based on $377×10^{6} B\overline{B}$ pairs recorded with the BABAR detector at the $Υ(4S)$ resonance. We select four event samples corresponding to the decay modes $B^{0}→π^{−}ℓ^{+}ν$, $B^{+}→π^{0}ℓ^{+}ν$, $B^{0}→ρ^{−}ℓ^{+}ν$, and $B^{+}→ρ^{0}ℓ^{+}ν$ and find the measured branching fractions to be consistent with isospin symmetry. Assuming isospin symmetry, we combine the two $B→πℓν$ samples, and similarly the two $B→ρℓν$ samples, and measure the branching fractions $ℬ(B^{0}→π^{−}ℓ^{+}ν)=(1.41±0.05±0.07)×10^{−4}$ and $ℬ(B^{0}→ρ^{−}ℓ^{+}ν)=(1.75±0.15±0.27)×10^{−4}$, where the errors are statistical and systematic. We compare the measured distribution in $q^2$, the momentum transfer squared, with predictions for the form factors from QCD calculations and determine the Cabibbo-Kobayashi-Maskawa matrix element $|V_{ub}|$. Based on the measured partial branching fraction for $B→πℓν$ in the range $q^{2}<12 GeV^{2}$ and the most recent QCD light-cone sum-rule calculations, we obtain $|V_{ub}|=(3.78±0.13^{+0.55}_{−0.40})×10^{−3}$, where the errors refer to the experimental and theoretical uncertainties. From a simultaneous fit to the data over the full $q^2$ range and the FNAL/MILC lattice QCD results, we obtain $|V_{ub}|=(2.95±0.31)×10^{−3}$ from $B→πℓν$, where the error is the combined experimental and theoretical uncertainty., Physics

Abstract: We search for single-photon decays of the $Υ(1S)$ resonance, $Υ→γ+$ invisible, where the invisible state is either a particle of definite mass, such as a light Higgs boson $A^0$, or a pair of dark matter particles, $χ\overline{χ}$. Both $A^0$ and χ are assumed to have zero spin. We tag $Υ(1S)$ decays with a dipion transition $Υ(2S)→π^{+}π^{−}Υ(1S)$ and look for events with a single energetic photon and significant missing energy. We find no evidence for such processes in the mass range $m_{A^{0}}≤9.2 GeV$ and $m_{χ}≤4.5 GeV$ in the sample of $98×10^{6} Υ(2S)$ decays collected with the BABAR detector and set stringent limits on new physics models that contain light dark matter states., Physics

Abstract: We search for CP violation in a sample of 20 000 Cabibbo-suppressed decays, D+→K+K0Sπ+π−, and 30 000 Cabibbo-favored decays, D+s→K+K0Sπ+π−. We use 520 fb−1 of data recorded by the BABAR detector at the PEP-II asymmetric-energy e+e− collider operating at center of mass energies near 10.6 GeV. We search for CP violation in the difference between the T-odd asymmetries obtained using triple product correlations of the D+ (D+s) and D− (D−s) decays, respectively. The T violation parameter values obtained are T(D+)=(−12.0±10.0stat±4.6syst)×10−3 and T(D+s)=(−13.6±7.7stat±3.4syst)×10−3, which are consistent with the standard model expectations., Physics

Abstract: We study the processes γγ→K0SK±π∓ and γγ→K+K−π+π−π0 using a data sample of 519.2fb−1 recorded by the BABAR detector at the PEP-II asymmetric-energy e+e− collider at center-of-mass energies near the Υ(nS) (n=2, 3, 4) resonances. We observe the ηc(1S), χc0(1P) and ηc(2S) resonances produced in two-photon interactions and decaying to K+K−π+π−π0, with significances of 18.1, 5.4 and 5.3 standard deviations (including systematic errors), respectively, and report 4.0σ evidence of the χc2(1P) decay to this final state. We measure the ηc(2S) mass and width in K0SK±π∓ decays, and obtain the values m(ηc(2S))=3638.5±1.5±0.8 MeV/c2 and Γ(ηc(2S))=13.4±4.6±3.2 MeV, where the first uncertainty is statistical and the second is systematic. We measure the two-photon width times branching fraction for the reported resonance signals, and search for the χc2(2P) resonance, but no significant signal is observed., Physics

Abstract: We present a study of the decays B±→DK± with D mesons reconstructed in the K+π−π0 or K−π+π0 final states, where D indicates a D0 or a D⎯⎯⎯0 meson. Using a sample of 474×106 BB⎯⎯⎯ pairs collected with the BABAR detector at the PEP-II asymmetric-energy e+e− collider at SLAC, we measure the ratios R±≡Γ(B±→[K∓π±π0]DK±)Γ(B±→[K±π∓π0]DK±). We obtain R+=(5+12−10(stat)+2−4(syst))×10−3 and R−=(12+12−10(stat)+3−5(syst))×10−3, from which we extract the upper limits at 90% probability: R+<23×10−3 and R−<29×10−3. Using these measurements, we obtain an upper limit for the ratio rB of the magnitudes of the b→u and b→c amplitudes rB<0.13 at 90% probability., Physics

Abstract: The authors characterize experimentally the anisotropy of two-photon absorption and the Kerr nonlinearity in silicon over a broad spectral region in the near infrared using the z-scan technique. The results show that both of these parameters decrease by about 12% along the [0 1 0] direction compared with the [0 1 1] direction, and this change occurs for wavelengths in the range of 1.2–2.4 μm.
