Existing building stock in Europe accounts for approx. 40% of the total energy consumption. Upgrading the thermal insulation of the existing buildings is an important measure to reduce heat losses through the building envelope. In some cases, increasing the thermal resistance of the construction may compromise the hygrothermal performance of the retrofitted construction. In particular, if vapour barrier is necessary for the good performance and it is practically difficult, if not even impossible, to install a well-sealed air- and vapour tight layer. To investigate the robustness of the hygrothermal performance of ventilated cold attics – with or without a vapour barrier – a monitoring campaign in a full-scale test building was set up. Also role of number of other parameters like moisture buffering capacity of the insulation material and thermal resistance was investigated. This paper presents part of this measuring campaign, which includes conditions both in the attic space and inside the insulation layer. The monitored data covers a period with two winters. The results show that it in temperate climate is practically indifferent for the hygrothermal performance of the monitored, well-ventilated attics with air-tight ceilings whether there is a vapour barrier or not and if the insulation material has moisture buffering capacity or not.

In historic masonry buildings, wood can be embedded in the walls as storey partition beams, or as supportive wall plates. Half-timbered masonry constructions, or wooden frames, e.g. combined with internal insulation, are other examples of wooden elements. Wood decaying fungi can cause serious damage to wood, which may lose mass and strength, ultimately yielding the risk of collapse. In addition, some fungal species may even be hazardous for occupants. All wood decaying fungi depend on favorable moisture and temperature conditions, although the threshold conditions may vary with various fungal species and types, and state of the wood. To predict the risk of occurrence of wood rot, several models have been developed, however most of these are based on a limited number of experiments, or very specific cases. For these reasons, the applicability of the models to other scenarios (fungal species, wood species) may not be appropriate. Furthermore, another failure mode for wood and moisture, is mold growth, which is initiated at lower moisture levels. An indication of risk of mold growth would indicate problems or risks before the initiation of wood rot. Mold growth does not deteriorate the wood, but is usually equally undesired due to health concerns of occupants. For this reason, there might be places where some mold growth would be acceptable, e.g. embedded beam ends if there is no transfer of air from the moldy area to the indoor air. Therefore, risk of rot could be important. The paper investigates models for mass loss due to wood decay and mold growth based on exposure time to favorable hygrothermal conditions. The investigation is based on inspection of wood samples (wall plates) from a full-scale experimental setup of masonry with embedded wood and monitored conditions, to which the prediction models will be applied. Monitored hygrothermal conditions were implemented in mold and wood decay models, and samples were removed from the test setup. The implemented models yielded high mold index and mass loss, whereas neither mold nor decay was observed in the physical samples. Results indicate that the implemented models, in these cases appear to overestimate the risks of mold and rot in the supportive lath behind the insulation.

The built environment is accountable for 1/3 of the European energy consumption. Thermal insulation is a key factor affecting the energy performance of buildings. Historic buildings typically were made with solid external walls of brick masonry or natural stone, rarely insulated afterwards. Often the buildings have worth-preserving façades making internal insulation the only feasible technique, however significantly modifying the hygrothermal performance of the façade. The research objective of this paper is to simulate the hygrothermal performance of solid masonry walls in an old Danish hospital that will be internally insulated following the Danish requirement (U-value) for external walls (change of use of buildings) and transformed into dwellings, involving different insulation systems. Heat loss and masonry moisture content level after adding internal insulation and the possible effects of hydrophobization on the moisture content is simulated. Simulations show an increased moisture content in the original wall when adding internal insulation implying an increased risk for moisture-related damage (mould growth, frost damage and interstitial condensation). The results also show that hydrophobic impregnation of the internally insulated facades may be vital in avoiding moisture problems and securing a moisture-safe energy renovation of buildings like the one studied.

The objective of this study was to test whether compliance with the current Danish best practice recommendations concerning design of the cold attic space will prevent damaging moisture levels. The project was performed as a full-scale experimental setup in the cool temperate climate of Denmark. The setup comprised 18 north-facing attic spaces with varying ventilation principles and varying infiltration scenarios. The relative humidity and temperature were measured in attic spaces, indoor and outdoor, for almost 3 years. The hygrothermal performance of the attics was evaluated by post-processing and comparing the data with predicted mould growth risk and with visual observations of mould growth. The results showed that following the recommended passive ventilation strategies made the hygrothermal performance in attics with diffusion-open roofing underlay worse. In addition, increasing vapour diffusion tightness of the roofing underlay made the hygrothermal performance of the cold attic spaces under the eaves worse, except for attics with passive ventilation but without infiltration. The hygrothermal performance of the attics with diffusion-tight roofing underlay was poor when combining infiltration and the assessed ventilation strategy. The performance of the same attic without infiltration showed that some degree of ventilation was needed. Two sewage sludge ashes were used as substitutes for cement and their effect on the hygrothermal properties of mortar was examined. Different cement to ash ratios and two ash pre-treatment methods (water washing and grinding) were in focus. The impact of cement replacement by sewage sludge ashes on thermal conductivity, sorption isotherms, water vapour permeability and carbonation was described with standard cement-based mortar as the reference material. Measurement results showed that thermal conductivity decreased by 15% when 30% of the cement was replaced by sewage sludge ash. Water vapour permeability increased as the cement to ash ratio was reduced. Sorption was tested by two methods; although differences in the sorption isotherms of mortars were reported when a climatic chamber method was applied, no differences, or only minor differences, were observed with the desiccator method. Measurements revealed that cement-based mortar possessed a higher content of carbonate than cement-ash-based mortar, and it thus appears that the carbonation rate was higher when the cement content was high. Indoor fungi are a worldwide problem causing negative health effects for infected building's occupants and even deterioration of building structures. Different fungal species affect buildings and their inhabitants differently. Therefore, rapid and accurate identification of fungi to the species level is essential for health risk assessment and building remediation. This study focuses on molecular identification of two common indoor fungal genera: Stachybotrys and Chaetomium . This study proposes two new DNA barcode candidates for Stachybotrys and Chaetomium : the gene encoding mitogen activated protein kinase ( hogA ) and the intergenic region between histone 3 and histone 4 ( h3-h4 ) as well as it introduces a rapid - 3.5 h - protocol for direct Stachybotrys and Chaetomium species identification, which bypasses culture cultivation, DNA extraction and DNA sequencing. There are several biological processes causing aging and damage to buildings. This is partly due to natural aging of materials and excessive moisture. The demands on durability, energy balance, and health of houses are continually rising. For mold development, the minimum (critical) ambient humidity requirement is shown to be between RH 80% and 95% depending on other factors like ambient temperature, exposure time, and the type and surface conditions of building materials. For decay development, the critical humidity is above RH 95%. Mold typically affects the quality of the adjacent air space with volatile compounds and spores. The next stage of moisture-induced damage, the decay development, forms a serious risk for structural strength depending on moisture content, materials, temperature, and time. The worst decay damage cases in North Europe are found in the floors and lower parts of walls, where water accumulates due to different reasons. Modeling of mold growth and decay development based on humidity, temperature, exposure time, and material will give new tools for the evaluation of durability of different building materials and structures. The models make it possible to evaluate the risk and development of mold growth and to analyze the critical conditions needed for the start of biological growth. The model is also a tool to simulate the progress of mold and decay development under different conditions on the structure surfaces. This requires that the moisture capacity and moisture transport properties in the material and at the surface layer be taken into account in the simulations. In practice there are even more parameters affecting mold growth, e.g., thickness of the material layers combined with the local surface heat and mass transfer coefficients. Therefore, the outcome of the simulations and in situ observations of biological deterioration may not agree. In the present article, results on mold growth in different materials and wall assemblies will be shown and existing models on the risk of mold growth development will be evaluated. One of the results of a newly finished large Finnish research project 'modeling of mold growth' is an improved and extended mathematical model for mold growth. Abstract: Problems with mould growth in dwellings usually occur in bedrooms in the microclimate behind closets placed next to exterior walls with poor insulation. It is anticipated that the problems are caused by lack of airflow behind the furniture in combination with a colder surface temperature and a high moisture production. The lack of air circulation decreases the surface temperature, which can cause problems. A particle image velocimetry (PIV) investigation was performed of the airflow patterns in such a microclimate. This paper describes the experimental set-up and the results. The results indicate that the flow rates behind the furniture will increase with increased distance between the closet and the wall, and even higher airflow rates are seen when the furniture is elevated by legs. There is a strong demand for accurate moisture modeling since moisture poses a risk for both the constructions and the indoor climate. This investigation has special focus on moisture modeling. This study describes a new model based on a CFD tool enhanced to include both detailed modeling of airflows in rooms and heat and moisture transfer in walls by applying them as fluid walls. The impacts of different boundary conditions and how these influence microclimates in rooms are investigated, in a 3D configuration. An inevitable measure when energy retrofitting historic buildings in Europe, is the reduction of building envelope heat loss. On preservation-worthy facades where external insulation is not an option, installation of internal insulation is gaining pace. The historic buildings in Denmark are often constructed with solid masonry facades and wooden decks. The internal insulation may, however, entail potential hygrothermal risks in walls and embedded wood. Measures such as vapour barriers and capillary active insulation materials are continuously evolving and the subject of much current research. The hygrothermal conditions are of great importance for the durability of the building constructions, and for the health and wellbeing of occupants. Wind-driven rain (WDR) is a central factor contributing to water penetration and moisture loads of the exterior walls. Numerous studies have shown that WDR loads influence the moisture conditions in masonry walls and embedded wooden beams, and can even affect interior relative humidity. In the present paper WDR loads on existing façades in a cold temperate climate were determined by measurements and compared to a semi-empirical model. Simultaneously, the hygrothermal conditions within internally insulated walls with exposed brick and embedded wooden beams were monitored. Furthermore, numerical simulations were implemented for clarification of WDR impact. Hygrothermal simulations and previous studies, inevitably show that high WDR loads result in higher moisture content behind the interior insulation. Results from the field measurements of WDR however, cannot directly be referred to the moisture content measured in walls behind interior insulation or beam ends. However, fluctuations in external air humidity proved to be influential on condiditons in the construction. Fungal growth in indoor environments is associated with many negative health effects. Many studies focus on brown- and white-rot fungi and their effect on wood, but there is none that reveals the influence of soft-rot fungi, such as Stachybotrys spp. and Chaetomium spp., on the structure of building materials such as plywood and gypsum wallboard. This study focuses on using micro-computed tomography (microCT) to investigate changes of the structure of plywood and gypsum wallboard during fungal degradation by S. chartarum and C. globosum . Changes in the materials as a result of dampness and fungal growth were determined by measuring porosity and pore shape via microCT. The results show that the composition of the building material influenced the level of penetration by fungi as shown by scanning electron microscopy (SEM). Plywood appeared to be the most affected, with the penetration of moisture and fungi throughout the whole thickness of the sample. Conversely, fungi grew only on the top cardboard in the gypsum wallboard and they did not have significant influence on the gypsum wallboard structure. The majority of the observed changes in gypsum wallboard occurred due to moisture. This paper suggests that the mycelium distribution within building materials and the structural changes, caused by dampness and fungal growth, depend on the type of the material. Internal insulation of external walls is known to create moisture performance challenges due to increased moisture levels and condensation risk on the cold side of the insulation. Capillary active/hydrophilic insulations have been introduced to solve these moisture problems, since they are able to transport liquid moisture to the inner surface and enable it to dry. Experience with this insulation type is rare in Denmark. In hygrothermal 1D computer simulations, several more or less capillary active insulation systems (AAC, calcium silicate, IQ-Therm) in various thicknesses (30–150 mm) have been tested for their hygrothermal performance. The original construction was a 228 mm solid brick masonry wall in a Copenhagen historic dormitory. All simulated systems showed critical relative humidity values above 80% and high risk of mould growth behind the insulation and some also on the interior surface. A moisture safe construction was only achieved when exterior façade impregnation shielding against driving rain was added. The best system showed acceptable relative humidity values both behind the insulation and on the interior surface, a significant increase in minimum temperature on the interior surface, and a reduction of heat loss through the external wall by 85%. The solely application of impregnation also resulted in a moisture safe solution with significant improvements in all parameters and heat loss reduction by 45%. The main conclusion is that capillary active insulation may not be feasible on solid bare masonry walls without additional driving rain protecting especially in case of multi-storey buildings with thin walls in high precipitation areas.
