Multiple raptors show juvenile plumage that is substantially different from that of their parents. Here, we test the prediction that the colouration of the juvenile northern goshawk Accipiter gentilis resembling the colouration of the common buzzard Buteo buteo acts as a form of aggressive mimicry. The goshawk specialises in hunting larger birds and mammals up to the size of geese or hares, while the buzzard preys mostly on small rodents. Larger birds may thus consider juvenile goshawks as less dangerous raptors, and the juvenile goshawk may thus gain an advantage when hunting. We used the Eurasian magpie Pica pica, a common prey of the goshawk, to test this prediction. We compared the behavioural responses of magpie parents defending their freshly fledged young towards mounts of an adult goshawk, juvenile goshawk, and buzzard. To be able to assess whether this behaviour differs from responses to a nest predator and a harmless bird we also presented a common raven Corvus corax and common pheasant Phasianus colchicus as baseline stimuli. Both juvenile and adult goshawks elicited antipredatory behaviour, but magpies took more risks facing juvenile goshawks. Additionally, the intensity of antipredatory behaviour towards the juvenile goshawk was also higher than towards the buzzard. We thus conclude that magpies do distinguish between juvenile and adult goshawks, as well as they do distinguish juvenile goshawks from buzzards. They are able to assess the threat particular raptors represent and respond accordingly. Analysis of spectral reflectance of stuffed specimens of these three raptors suggests there are differences, which can be used for the appropriate recognition. In conclusion, we cannot confirm the hypothesis of aggressive mimicry in juvenile goshawks that interact with magpies.

Electrochemical migration (ECM) on the surface of printed circuit boards (PCBs) continues to pose a significant reliability risk in electronics. Nevertheless, the existing literature lacks studies that address the solder mask and solder pad design aspects in the context of ECM. Therefore, the objective of this study was to assess the impact of solder mask type with varying roughness and solder pad design on the susceptibility to ECM using a water drop test and thermal humidity bias test. Hot air solder leveling-coated PCBs were tested. Furthermore, the ECM tests were conducted on PCBs with applied no-clean solder paste to evaluate the influence of flux residues on the resulting ECM behavior. The results indicated that the higher roughness of the solder mask significantly contributes to ECM inhibition through the creation of a mechanical barrier for the dendrites. Furthermore, lower ECM susceptibility was also observed for copper-defined pads, where a similar effect is presumed. However, the influence of the no-clean flux residues can prevail over the effects of the solder mask. Therefore, the use of a rough solder mask and a copper-defined pad design is recommended if the PCB is to be washed from flux residues after the soldering process.

3D-printed electronics belong to new approaches to how to build a complex object with multiple desired functions. For that purpose, materials with specific electric properties are needed: conductors, insulators, magnetics, or dielectrics with high permittivity. However, such materials are not commonly available in the form of filament for fused deposition modelling since the development is still ongoing. This paper describes the electrical properties of PETG-ceramic composite filaments. PETG (polyethylene terephthalate glycol-modified) was filled with titanium dioxide (10 and 20 wt.%) to increase the dielectric constant and, simultaneously, to preserve printing simplicity as the material key advantage. Dielectric spectroscopy and measurement of volume resistivity were performed on printed samples. Relative permittivity increased by 50% for a composite filled with 20 wt.% of ceramic particles (ϵr = 2.5÷4.4) against pure PETG. Permittivity and dielectric loss exhibited frequency and temperature independence. The prepared composite can be used for dielectric applications in electronics.

Abstract Myrmecomorphy is a strategy utilized by a variety of species, among which spiders are the most common. It is supposed that myrmecomorphy tends to be selected by predator avoidance of preying on ants rather than by blind ant workers. To date, this hypothesis has been tested mainly on invertebrate predators (mantises and spiders). We are the first to test whether an imperfect myrmecomorph spider (Phrurolithus festivus) gains protection against avian predators (wild adult great tits—Parus major) through its appearance. In a set of preferential trials, we showed that the ant model and the myrmecomorph spider are equally well protected against attack, though the attacked myrmecomorphs are usually eaten. This suggests that the mimicry of the myrmecomorph spiders is effective against avian predators and works in a Batesian manner. In this study, we have provided evidence toward the evolution of myrmecomorphy in response to selective pressure elicited by visually-oriented predators like birds.

The work evaluates the impact of latent heat (LH) absorbed or released by a solder alloy during melting or solidification, respectively, on changes of dimensions of materials surrounding of the solder alloy. Our sample comprises a small printed circuit board (PCB) with a blind via filled with lead-free alloy SAC305. Differential scanning calorimetry (DSC) was employed to obtain the amount of LH per mass and a thermomechanical analyzer was used to measure the thermally induced deformation. A plateau during melting and a peak during solidification were detected during the course of dimension change. The peak height reached 1.6 μm in the place of the heat source and 0.3 μm in the distance of 3 mm from the source. The data measured during solidification was compared to a numerical model based on the finite element method. An excellent quantitative agreement was observed which confirms that the transient expansion of PCB during cooling can be explained by the release of LH from the solder alloy during solidification. Our results have important implications for the design of PCB assemblies where the contribution of recalescence to thermal stress can lead to solder joint failure.

Abstract Background During recognition process, multiple parameters of the encountered stimulus may play a role. Previous studies with wild birds identified the importance of several salient features (e.g., eyes, beak, prominent elements of colouration) which birds use to recognise other bird species, such as predators or nest parasites. In the present study, we observed the responses of passerines visiting winter feeders to stimuli in the form of dummies of Eurasian sparrowhawk which were modified in body size and/or colouration but always carried the salient features of raptors (hooked beak, talons) and one species-specific feature of the sparrowhawk (yellow eyes). In the vicinity of a feeder, we placed a dummy of an unmodified sparrowhawk, life-sized sparrowhawk with pigeon, great tit, or robin colouration, a small, great tit-sized sparrowhawk dummy with unmodified or pigeon colouration, or an unmodified pigeon dummy, which functioned as a harmless control. Then we measured how it affected the number of visits. Results We found that birds were less afraid of small dummies regardless of their colouration than they were of life-sized raptor dummies or even the pigeon dummy. This contrasts with the results of a previous laboratory experiment where great tits’ reaction to small dummies was comparably fearful to their response to life-size dummies. In our experiment, birds were also not afraid of life-sized dummies with modified colouration except for a robin-coloured dummy, which caused an equally significant fear reaction as an unmodified sparrowhawk dummy. It is likely that this dummy resembled the colouration of a male sparrowhawk closely enough to cause this effect. Conclusions Based on our observations, we conclude that birds use contextual features to evaluate the size of other birds. Distance and familiar reference points seem to play an important part in this process.

Sn–Bi alloys are desirable candidates for soldering components on printed circuit boards (PCBs) because of their low melting point and reduced cost. While certain tin–bismuth solders are well characterized many new alloys in this family have been developed which need proper characterization. The following study looks at the behavior of four different Sn–Bi alloys—traditional 42Sn58Bi and 42Sn57Bi1Ag and two new tin–bismuth alloys—in solder paste during the reflow soldering process. Each alloy was processed using different reflow profiles that had varying times above liquidus (TALs) and peak temperatures. The PCBs were then analyzed to see how the processing variables influenced wetting, voiding, microstructure, intermetallic layer composition, and thickness. After analysis, the PCBs were then subjected to thermal cycling experiments to see how reflow profile impacted microstructure evolution. The results demonstrated that reflow profile affects properties such as metal wetting and voiding. It does not however, greatly impact key metallurgical properties such as intermetallic layer thickness.

This work presented an FEM (finite element method) mathematical model that describes the temperature distribution in different parts of a 3D printer based on additive manufacturing process using filament extrusion during its operation. Variation in properties also originate from inconsistent choices of process parameters employed by individual manufacturers. Therefore, a mathematical model that calculates temperature changes in the filament (and the resulting print) during an FFF (fused filament fabrication) process was deemed useful, as it can estimate otherwise immeasurable properties (such as the internal temperature of the filament during the printing). Two variants of the model (both static and dynamic) were presented in this work. They can provide the user with the material’s thermal history during the print. Such knowledge may be used in further analyses of the resulting prints. Thanks to the dynamic model, the cooling of the material on the printing bed can be traced for various printing speeds. Both variants simulate the printing of a PLA (Polylactic acid) filament with the nozzle temperature of 220 °C, bed temperature of 60 °C, and printing speed of 5, 10, and 15 m/s, respectively.

Flux contained in solder paste significantly affects the process of solder joint creation during reflow soldering, including the creation of an intermetallic layer (IML). This work investigates the dependence of intermetallic layer thickness on ROL0/ROL1 flux classification, glossy or matt solder mask, and OSP/HASL/ENIG soldering pad surface finish. Two original SAC305 solder pastes differing only in the used flux were chosen for the experiment. The influence of multiple reflows was also observed. The intermetallic layer thicknesses were obtained by the image analysis of micro-section images. The flux type proved to have a significant impact on the intermetallic layer thickness. The solder paste with ROL1 caused an increase in IML thickness by up to 40% in comparison to an identical paste with ROL0 flux. Furthermore, doubling the roughness of the solder mask has increased the resulting IML thickness by 37% at HASL surface finish and by an average of 22%.

The purpose of this study was to compare the strength of the bond between resin and glass cloth for various composites (laminates) and its dependence on utilized soldering pad surface finishes. Moreover, the impact of surface finish application on the thermomechanical properties of the composites was evaluated. Three different laminates with various thermal endurances were included in the study. Soldering pads were covered with OSP and HASL surface finishes. The strength of the cohesion of the resin upper layer was examined utilizing a newly established method designed for pulling tests. Experiments studying the bond strength were performed at a selection of laminate temperatures. Changes in thermomechanical behavior were observed by thermomechanical and dynamic mechanical analyses. The results confirmed the influence of the type of laminate and used surface finish on bond strength. In particular, permanent polymer degradation caused by thermal shock during HASL application was observed in the least thermally resistant laminate. A response to thermal shock was detected in thermomechanical properties of other laminates as well, but it does not seem to be permanent.

Red-backed shrikes (Lanius collurio) behave quite differently towards two common nest predators. While the European jay (Garrulus glandarius) is commonly attacked, in the presence of the Eurasian magpie (Pica pica), shrikes stay fully passive. We tested the hypotheses that this passive response to the magpie is an alternative defense strategy. Nesting shrikes were exposed to the commonly attacked European kestrel (Falco tinnunculus) in a situation in which i) a harmless domestic pigeon, ii) a commonly attacked European jay, and iii) a non-attacked black-billed magpie are (separately) presented nearby. The kestrel dummy presented together with the magpie dummy was attacked with a significantly lower intensity than when it was presented with the other intruders (pigeon, jay) or alone. This means that the presence of the magpie inhibited the shrike's defense response towards the other intruder. These results support our previous hypotheses that shrikes use an alternative defense strategy in the magpie's presence. We hypothesize that the magpie is able to associate the active defense of the shrikes with the close proximity of a nest and that shrikes try not to draw the magpie's attention to the nest. The reason why this strategy is not used against the jay remains unanswered as jays as well as magpies show very similar cognitive and foraging skills enabling them to individuate the nest presence according to active parental defense.

This article deals about modified way of switch area capacity assessment in a railway station and about the software tool that realize the calculation. The procedure of calculation originates from the leaflet UIC 406. Original methodology that is described in the leaflet is based on the knowledge of a switch area (only some parts of it) exclusion times because of occupancy by individual trains. In some cases it might be problem to get input data in needed format. There are some simulation tools that provide occupancy times it different format and to convert the data to a needed format is not easy to do. Due to this reason there was designed alternative way how to assess capacity of switch area that use data from simulation tools. To assess the capacity there was developed software tool that follow rules from the leaflet UIC 406 so the results that it provides are equal to original methodology.

The article aims to investigate an impact of new STAR procedures intended to be implemented on the Kunovice airport (LKKU) compared with current state. The new Standard instrument Arrivals (STARs) and Departures (SIDs), which were designed according to the Performance Based Navigation (PBN) concept, are expected to bring benefits such as increased airspace capacity, flexibility or ATC controller workload decrease. The new procedures design is presented in first part of the article. In the second part, the article introduces the simulation tool Visual Simmod used for simulation experiment. The simulations on the models of new and current design on the several traffic samples are performed and the results are analyzed.

This paper deals with design of methodology for railway station capacity assessment that is in an experimental stage within the information system KANGO. This methodology is slightly different from procedure that is defined in obsolete regulation D24. These days the new methodology is in test stage. The reason for changes in methodology consist of finished reworks in module that is responsible for technological times – this module is basis for occupancy time calculation for running tracks and gridiron.

Článek se zabývá postupy při navrhování nových druhů přístrojových přiblížení na přistání s využitím globálních navigačních systémů a jejich rozšíření. Autor se zaměřuje na objasnění postupu při konstrukci postupu přiblížení s vertikálním vedením (APV) včetně určení vertikálních minim pro dané přiblížení. Ve druhé části je demonstrován postup konstrukce přiblížení APV/SBAS pro dráhu 03C letiště Kunovice. S podporou programu MET je určena soustava rovin pro vyhodnocení překážek (OAS), vyhodnoceny pevné překážky a vypočtena bezpečná nadmořská výška/výška nad překážkami (OCA/H).

This article deals with the specification of new methodology of capacity calculation in the crossing or overtaking sections with one or more junctions as well as with a concrete implementation of the methodology as standalone computing unit within information system that is used for timetable construction and production of related train traffic diagram aids. The basic theoretical description is introduced in (1) and (2).

Assessment of the traffic capacity of a rail infrastructure involved within railway stations is one of the basic components of the rail transport planning process. An important part of the rail infrastructure in the stations is station throat, which typically comprises many switches and track crossings. Station throat acts as operating bottleneck that frequently has the largest impact on the station’s traffic capacity. The capacity of a station throat is often conveniently assessed based on the use of mesoscopic computer simulation. This requires (among other things) a suitable submodel of the throat infrastructure to be set up. This article presents innovative algorithms for the automated creation of mesoscopic target model of station throat based on consecutive transformations of an initial (intuitive) microscopic model. Compared to the hitherto used manual process, the automated procedure accelerates the construction of the target station throat model and eliminates its structural errors. The applied research method is based both on the original design of the target mathematical model graph (a vertex-weighted directed graph) for the representation of the station throat infrastructure and on the design and verification of innovative graph algorithms that perform multiple aggregation transformations of this model in order to perform its maximum admissible topological simplification. The results of the research conducted have helped to enhance and efficiently use the station throat capacity assessment methodology. The use of the algorithms is demonstrated in a case study concerning station throats within a minor railway station in the Czech Republic.

Biodegradables are a promising path for the future of electronics in a greener mindset. The review study focuses on their applications and past and current research results. The paper also investigates the application of nanomaterials as fillers to control or increase the physical (electrical, mechanical, thermal) properties of biodegradable biopolymers. These biodegradables and nanocomposites are already effectively used in prototypes and advanced application areas with demanding requirements, such as flexible and wearable electronics, implantable or biomedical applications, and traditional commercial electronics. The nano-enhanced biopolymer substrates (e.g., with improved gas and water barrier functionalities) sometimes also with integrated, nano-enabled functionalities (such as electromagnetic shielding or plasmonic activity) can be beneficial in many electronics packaging and nanopackaging applications as well.

Prolonged QT interval is an independent risk factor for development of ventricular arrhythmias. Haloperidol is one of the drugs inducing QT prolongation. Previous studies showed that haloperidol affects not only QT duration but also heart rate (RR interval). The present work focused on relationship between QT and RR and its changes under acute and chronic haloperidol administration. The study included 14 male guinea pigs divided into control and haloperidol-treated group. After 21-days administration of haloperidol or vehiculum, electrograms in isolated hearts were recorded. QT/RR and dQT/dRR coupling were calculated. Chronic haloperidol administration significantly decreases the coupling between QT and RR. Acute haloperidol exposure significantly decreases the dQT/dRR coupling in both treated and untreated guinea pig hearts. Flatter QT/RR relationship reveals a lack of QT adaptation to increased heart rate. It should be emphasized that in such situation ECG recording will not show significant QT prolongation evaluated according to clinical rules. However, if QT interval does not adapt to increased heart rate sufficiently, the risk of ventricular arrhythmias may be increased despite practically normal QT interval length. The results are supported by findings in biochemical analyses, which proved eligibility of the used model. In addition to the conventional laboratory tests of input materials and construction mixtures, the technically correct design of pavement structure involves more frequent functional tests of the input materials and mixtures. Our study summarizes findings from a long-term monitoring of pavement on selected road sections with lower traffic intensity. The research involved the comparison of resilient moduli as a design parameter of unbound pavement base layers’ unbound granular materials (UGMs), determined in a laboratory by a test device for a cyclical triaxial test and in situ by impact load test using a falling weight deflectometer (FWD). In particular, the resilient moduli determined in the laboratory by a cyclic triaxial test (Mr,CTT) were compared with the real values of resilient moduli measured by FWD (Mr,FWD). A new, unique, and innovative FWD device was used to determine the Mr,FWD of the UGMs. The innovation lay in the dual-axis deflection measurement—measurement performed not just in the axis parallel to the road, but also in the axis in the transversal direction. It was found that, especially on roads with lower traffic load, such dual-axis (spatial) determination of Mr,FWD moduli was of great importance because it often allowed the identification of local pavement sections with low bearing capacities, especially at the edges, which have a significantly lower value of Mr,FWD.

Aims: Visual acuity determination is an important task in ophthalmology and optometry practices. Visual acuity can be examined objectively or subjectively. The objective examination method, sVEP, allows for quick objective measurements of patient's visual acuity. Previous studies have not demonstrated the repeatability of this objective sVEP method. This study aims to evaluate the sVEP method and compare it to a subjective method. Methods and Results: The sample was divided into two groups. For the first group, visual acuity was measured with sVEP and Snellen methods on only one patient twelve times. In the second group, visual acuity was measured twice with sVEP followed twice with the Snellen method with Landolt's rings and logMAR modification on 32 non-pathological patients. Results showed significant differences between average values of visual acuity obtained with both methods (sVEP and Snellen) in both samples (T-test, P < 0.01; Wilcoxon test, P = 0.02 in second group). In the second group, significant correlations between repeated sVEP measurements (Spearman test, P < 0.05, r = 0.69) were found but no significant correlation between average sVEP measurement and average Snellen measurement (Spearman test, P > 0.05, r = 0.15) was found. Conclusion: Objective measurement of visual acuity with sVEP is a valid and reliable method, but is recommended only when it is not possible to use a subjective method for measuring visual acuity, e.g. children, patients with mental retardation or simulating/dissimulating patients.
