Abstract Highly sensitive and selective gas-sensing materials are critical for applications ranging from environmental monitoring to breath analysis. A rational approach at the nanoscale is urgent to design next-generation sensing devices. In previous work, we unveiled interesting charge transfer channels at the interface between p-type doped graphene and a layer of nickel phthalocyanine (NiPc) molecules, which we believe could be successfully exploited in gas sensing devices. Here, we have investigated the graphene-NiPc interface’s response to adsorbed gas molecules via first-principles calculations. We focused on NH3 and NO2 as test molecules, representing electron donors and acceptors, respectively. Notably, we identified the Ni d z 2 orbital as a key player in mediating the charge transfer and affecting the charge carrier density in graphene. As a proof-of-concept, we then prepared the graphene-NiPc system as a chemiresistor device and exposed it to NH3 and NO2 at room temperature. The sensing tests revealed excellent sensitivity and selectivity, along with a rapid recovery time and a remarkably low detection limit.

Characterization of defects in large 3D printed metals is critical but challenging. This study reports on the X-ray micro-computed tomography (micro-CT) examination of porosities in large-volume 3D-printed and heat-treated titanium (Ti–6Al–4V) alloys, together with their tensile properties and failure mechanisms. Titanium alloy powders were analyzed using scanning electron microscopy (SEM). Laser powder bed fusion (L-PBF) was used to print titanium alloy specimens vertically and horizontally, followed by stress-relieved heat treatment. Micro-CT imaging was performed on printed specimens of 10 × 20 mm3 (diameter × length) to determine their porosities, pore locations and size distributions using an industrial micro-CT system and relevant imaging software. Tensile testing of the processed specimens was conducted to determine their mechanical properties. Optical microscopy and SEM were used to examine the tension-induced failure mechanisms. The results show that porosities, pore sizes and locations were influenced by the build direction, resulting in different mechanical properties. Horizontal printing achieved higher tensile modulus, strength, ductility, resilience and toughness than vertical printing. Heat treatment did not change porosities in horizontally built specimens, but slightly reduced porosities for vertically built ones by 10%. This led to most mechanical properties nearly unchanged for the horizontally printed specimens but remarkably increased yield and tensile strength, and resilience, for the vertically printed ones. All tension-induced fractured surfaces contained pores, possible indicators of failure origins, which should be diminished in advanced processes for higher mechanical reliability.

Land subsidence is a worldwide threat that may cause irreversible damage to the environment and the infrastructures. Thus, identifying and mapping areas prone to land subsidence with accurate methods such as Land Subsidence Susceptibility Index (LSSI) mapping is crucial for mitigating the adverse impacts of this geohazard. Also, Machine Learning (ML) is now becoming a powerful tool to analyze vast and different datasets such as those necessary for LSSI mapping. In this study, we use the conventional Frequency Ratio (FR) method and ML models to generate LSSI maps of the region of Murcia (Spain) where land subsidence occurred in the past due to groundwater overdraft. A LSSI map was initially generated with known FR. Then, additional Conditioning Factors (CFs) with increased spatial resolution were used to train several ML models and generate a new LSSI map. The Extra-Trees Classifier (ETC) outperformed the other approaches, achieving the best performance with a weighted average precision and F1-Score of 0.96, after optimizing its hyperparameters. Then, a third LSSI map was calculated using the FR method and observations of land subsidence from InSAR (Interferometric Synthetic Aperture Radar). This study shows that the effectiveness of using several CFs depends on the added information of each layer. Moreover, the comparison between the different LSSI maps and InSAR data highlights the crucial role of the spatial resolution for accurate mapping, thus enhancing land subsidence risk assessment.

ABSTRACT: Objectives: K. pneumoniae is a common cause of severe hospital-acquired infections. In the present study, we have characterised the whole-genome of two K. pneumoniae ST437 belonging to the clonal complex CC258. Methods: The whole-genome sequencing was performed by MiSeq Illumina, with a 2 × 300bp paired-end run. ResFinder 4.4.2 was used to detect acquired antimicrobial resistance genes (ARGs) and chromosomal mutations. Mobile genetic elements (plasmids and ISs) were identified by MobileElementFinder v1.0.3. The genome was also assigned to ST using MLST 2.0.9. Virulence factors were detected using the Virulence Factor Database (VFDB). Results: K. pneumoniae KPNAQ_1/23 and KPNAQ_2/23 strains, isolated from urine samples of hospitalised patients, showed resistance to most antibiotics, including ceftazidime-avibactam, ceftolozane-tazobactam, and meropenem-vaborbactam combinations. Both strains were susceptible only to cefiderocol. Multiple mechanisms of resistance were identified. Resistance to β-lactams was due to the presence of NDM-5, OXA-232, CTX-M-15, SHV-182 β-lactamases, and OmpK36 and OmpK37 porin mutations. Resistance to fluoroquinolones was mediated by chromosomal mutations in acrR, oqxAB efflux pumps, and the bifunctional gene aac(6’)-Ib-cr. Conclusion: The presence of different virulence genes makes these KPNAQ_1/23 and KPNAQ_2/23 high-risk clones.

Abstract Background Reverse Shoulder Arthroplasties (RSA) have become a primary choice for improving shoulder function and pain. However, the biomechanical failure mechanism of the humeral component is still unclear. The present study reports a novel protocol for microstructural imaging of the entire humerus implant under load before and after fracture. Methods A humerus specimen was obtained from a 75-year-old male donor. An expert surgeon implanted the specimen with a commonly used RSA implant (Aequalis reversed II, Stryker Orthopaedics, USA) and surgical procedure. The physiological glenohumeral contact force that maximized the distal implant migration was selected from a public repository ( orthoload.com ). Imaging and concomitant mechanical testing were performed using a large-volume micro-CT scanner (Nikon XT H 225 ST) and a custom-made compressive stage. Both when intact and once implanted, the specimen was tested under a pre-load and by imposing a constant deformation causing a physiological reaction load (650 N, 10 degrees adducted). The deformation of the implanted specimen was then increased up to fracture, which was identified by a sudden drop of the reaction force, and the specimen was then re-scanned. Results The specimen’s stiffness decreased from 874 N/mm to 464 N/mm after implantation, producing movements of the bone-implant interface consistent with the implant’s long-term stability reported in the literature. The micro-CT images displayed fracture of the tuberosity, caused by a combined compression and circumferential tension, induced by the distal migration of the implant. Conclusion The developed protocol offers detailed information on implant mechanics under load relative to intact conditions and fracture, providing insights into the failure mechanics of RSA implants. This protocol can be used to inform future implant design and surgical technique improvements.

The interannual variability of the physical properties of the shelf waters in Sardinia, western Mediterranean Sea, is studied by using hydrological data gathered during three oceanographic cruises: two in late summer of 2019 and 2021 respectively and another one in early autumn of 2020. The data consist of vertical profiles of salinity and potential temperature acquired by a multiparametric probe for a total of 171 casts performed along a set of transects extending from the nearshore to the continental slope, up to the depth of 200 m. Background: Education has a pivotal role in preparing society to address the forthcoming health impacts of the climate crisis. Education provides the tools necessary to instil both individual and collective attitudes for mitigating climate change, fosters the development of adaptive skills and mindsets, and promotes a critical understanding of climate change. The aim of the PERSIST project was to assess the effectiveness of a school educational intervention to strengthen literacy on the climate crisis, pro-environmental behaviours, and systems thinking in high school students (aged 14–18 years). Methods: Three meetings were carried out in a scientific high school in the suburbs of Rome (Italy) between March 21, and April 12, 2023, using complex systems models, group activities, and collective discussions. Pre-intervention and post-intervention questionnaires were administered to students to record knowledge, climate-related emotions, and pro-environmental behaviours. Questionnaires that were complete were considered valid. The anonymously collected data were processed using descriptive statistics and t test. Findings: A total of 273 students in ten different classes attending between grades 1 and 4 took part in the project. 78 (36%) participants were female, 133 (62%) were male, and four (2%) did not disclose their gender. The mean age was 15 years. We received 211 pairs of valid pre-intervention and post-intervention questionnaires. The preliminary analysis showed an average increase of 19% in correct responses to knowledge questions, a 21·2% increase in pro-environmental behaviours, and no discernible differences in climate-related emotions between pre-intervention and post-intervention questionnaires. Interpretation: An interactive approach and the use of complex systems might improve students' literacy and attitudes towards the climate crisis, without increasing negative ecological emotions. This pilot project can guide similar, repeatable programmes in other schools and countries and it represents the first measure of climate-related emotions after school intervention. Funding: None.

Abstract Background COVID-19 pandemic represented a shock for healthcare systems. Italy was one of the first country to deal with a huge number of patients to be diagnosed, isolated, and treated with scarce evidence-based guidelines and resources. Several organizational and structural changes were needed to face the pandemic at local level. The article aims at studying the perceived impact of the newly implemented District Operation Centres (DOCs) of Local Health Authority (LHA) Roma 1 in managing active surveillance and home care of COVID-19 patients and their close contacts in cooperation with general practitioners (GPs). Methods A questionnaire, developed according to Delphi methodology, was validated by 7 experts and administered to a randomized sample of GPs and family paediatricians (FPs). All medical doctors selected received a phone interview between December 2020 and January 2021. The questionnaire investigated general characteristics of the sample, relations with DOC and its usefulness, and potential developments. A descriptive analysis was performed and inferential statistical tests were used to assess differences. Results In April 2020 the LHA Roma 1 implemented one DOCs in each local health district. 215 medical doctors were interviewed, reaching the sample target for health districts (80% CL and 10% MOE) and the whole LHA (90% CL and 5% MOE). Several aspects in the management of COVID-19 cases and close contacts of COVID-19 cases, and of the support of DOCs to GPs/FPs were investigated. More than 55% of the GPs and FPs interviewed found the DOCs useful and more than 78% would recommend a service DOC-like to other LHAs. The medical professionals interviewed would use DOCs in the future as support in treating vulnerable patients, utilizing digital health tools, enlisting specialist doctors, establishing networks, and facilitating professional counselling by nurses. Conclusions This study is an attempt to evaluate an organizational change happened during COVID-19 pandemic. DOCs were created to support GPs and FPs as a link between primary healthcare and public health. Although several difficulties were disclosed, DOCs’ experience can help to overcome the fragmentation of the systems and the duality between primary care and public health and make the system more resilient.

This paper presents a passive Envelope Detector (ED) to be used for reception of OOK-modulated signals, such as in Wake-Up Receivers employed within Wireless Sensor Networks, widely used in the IoT. The main goal is implementing a temperature compensation mechanism in order to keep the passive ED input resistance roughly constant over temperature, making it a constant load for the preceding matching network and ultimately keeping the overall receiving chain sensitivity constant over temperature. The proposed ED was designed using STMicroelectronics 90 nm CMOS technology to receive 1 kbps OOK-modulated packets with a 433 MHz carrier frequency and a 0.6 V supply. The use of a block featuring a Proportional-to-Absolute Temperature (PTAT) current yields a 5 dB reduction in sensitivity temperature variation across the −40 °C to 120 °C range. Moreover, two different implementations were compared, one targeting minimal mismatch and the other one targeting minimal area. The minimal area version appears to be better in terms of estimated overall chain sensitivity at all temperatures despite a higher sensitivity spread.

Abstract Non-technical summary Healthcare systems significantly impact the environment, which in turn affects human health. To address this, we propose to revise a popular framework for healthcare improvement, by introducing the advancement of planetary health (the health of both humans and the natural systems) among the aims that health systems should pursue. This approach suggests reducing medical service needs through disease prevention, minimizing environmental impacts, and supporting global efforts to protect planetary health. Practical applications to bring about these pathways are documented in the literature. Technical summary Restoring the health of the planet, with concurrent benefits for human civilization, is paramount. Healthcare systems play a crucial role in this regard, considering the environmental impact of health services. Widely recognized approaches to designing healthcare systems for the optimization of their performance are based on the pursuit of multiple aims, such as the Triple Aim and Quadruple Aim frameworks. The objective of this work is to revise the latter by substituting ‘Advance Planetary Health’ for ‘Improve Population Health’. The objective of advancing planetary health supports all other pre-existing objectives: lowering costs, enhancing patient experience, team wellbeing, and population health, which directly relates to planetary health. Health systems promoting planetary health reduce the need for medical services through disease prevention and health promotion, pursue the provision of appropriate care, minimize the overall environmental impact of medical services, and support planetary health initiatives across all sectors and society. Multiple interconnected pathways exist to operationalize the above components. A revised quadruple aim for healthcare improvement, aligned with social and economic goals of sustainable prosperity and wellbeing, may be a desirable step toward constructing planetary health systems capable of maximizing the health of humans and natural systems. Objective: Attention disorder and substance use disorder are linked to driving impairment and increased road crash involvement. This study explores attention deficits in a population of drivers found driving under the influence (DUI) of psychoactive substances. Methods: A case-control study was conducted comparing subjects with a previous DUI episode (cases) to subjects who were negative for DUI offenses (controls). Personal, socio-demographic, and DUI data were collected for both groups. All subjects were administered the Continuous Performance Test–third edition (CPT-3), which measures dimensions of attention, including inattentiveness, impulsivity, sustained attention, and vigilance. Possible associations with a previous DUI episode, the use of illicit substances or excessive alcohol use, and road crash involvement were analyzed statistically. Results: Overall, the study included 147 subjects (100 cases, 47 controls). The parameter distributions of detectability, probability of ADHD, and inattentiveness indicated statistical differences between the two groups. No attention deficits predicted substance use disorder or excessive alcohol consumption. Inattentiveness was an independent risk factor for previous road collision involvement. Conclusions: The results suggest that alterations exist in some attention dimensions in a population of DUI subjects who were users of alcohol or other psychoactive substances and involved in road traffic crashes. The CPT-3 had successfully distinguished between the two study groups, and after validation, it could be useful in the process of reinstating a driver's license. Future research should expand the study sample to better understand the relevance of the proposed methodological approach in terms of prevention, rehabilitation, and the monitoring of subjects evaluated for driving eligibility requirements.

Abstract Background Cities contribute to and are affected by the climate crisis, determining significant health issues in urban settings. Educational institutions have a privileged position to contribute to achieving the transformations needed for a healthier future, so Urban Health education is fundamental to empowering the health of the youth living in cities. This study aims to measure and raise the awareness of Urban Health among students attending a high school in Rome (Italy). Methods An interactive educational intervention, consisting of four sessions, was conducted in a Roman high school during spring 2022. Overall, 319 students aged between 13 and 18 attended the sessions and were asked to complete a 11-items questionnaire before and another after the interventions. Data was gathered anonymously and analyzed using descriptive and inferential statistics. Results Fifty-eight percent of respondents improved their post-intervention questionnaire score, while 15% did not improve and 27% got worse. Infections caused by KPC-producing K. pneumoniae continue to pose a significant clinical challenge due to their emerging resistance to new antimicrobials. We investigated the association between two drugs whose roles have been repurposed against multidrug-resistant bacteria: fosfomycin and temocillin. Temocillin exhibits unusual stability against KPC enzymes, while fosfomycin acts as a potent “synergizer”. We conducted in vitro antimicrobial activity studies on 100 clinical isolates of KPC-producing K. pneumoniae using a combination of fosfomycin and temocillin. The results demonstrated synergistic activity in 91% of the isolates. Subsequently, we assessed the effect on Galleria mellonella larvae using five genetically different KPC-Kp isolates. The addition of fosfomycin to temocillin increased larvae survival from 73 to 97% (+Δ 32%; isolate 1), from 93 to 100% (+Δ 7%; isolate 2), from 63 to 86% (+Δ 36%; isolate 3), from 63 to 90% (+Δ 42%; isolate 4), and from 93 to 97% (+Δ 4%; isolate 10). Among the temocillin-resistant KPC-producing K. pneumoniae isolates (24 isolates), the addition of fosfomycin reduced temocillin MIC values below the resistance breakpoint in all isolates except one. Temocillin combined with fosfomycin emerges as a promising combination against KPC-producing K. pneumoniae, warranting further clinical evaluation.

Food safety is a topic of increasing relevance in the European Union (EU). Ensuring safe food from farm to fork is one of the main objectives of EU policies. In our study, we conducted an online survey to assess the food safety knowledge and eating habits in various categories. For young people, we chose school students aged 15–19, based on their ability to cook autonomously after school. For adults, we choose a representative sample consisting of students’ parents and teachers in Chieti and Pescara Provinces of Abruzzo Region (Italy). The survey was structured in eight sections with particular attention to questions regarding risks associated with microorganisms (e.g., Salmonella spp.) and bacterial cross-contamination. Water stress is an everyday issue in developing countries and especially in Foumban, a municipality located in the West Region of Cameroon between longitudes 10°40’-11°10’E and latitudes 05°30’-05°55’N. The failure of the water distribution system in the Municipality of Foumban (MoF) led the citizens as well as the municipal authorities to exploit groundwater. Unfortunately, an extensive hydrogeophysical field campaign, with incidental cost, is required because the groundwater potential is not priorly assessed. The main objective of this article is to demarcate groundwater potential zones of MoF. For this, six thematic layers contributing to groundwater occurrences are combined using analytical hierarchy process (AHP) on a GIS environment to produce a sound groundwater potential map. This map is classified into three zones: low potential for 39.06%, acceptable potential for 27.27% and high potential for 33.68% of the study area. This may help to increase the rate of productive wells (by focusing hydrogeophysical investigation on areas with high groundwater potential) using little financial resources.

The need to use renewable sources and matrices with energy potential is widely recognized. The development of innovative technologies aimed at the improvement of energy conversion processes and reducing environmental impacts is currently receiving increasing attention from the scientific community and policymakers. The presence of sugars in airborne particle materials is attributed to biomass combustion. For this reason, these compounds are considered markers of biomass burning. The purpose of this work was to evaluate the emissions produced by agroforestry biomass burning (citrus pruning) by simultaneously sampling both stack emissions and atmospheric particulates in the area around a biomass boiler to understand the real contribution of biomass burning to atmospheric pollution. The combustion tests were carried out by comparing the processes with and without particulate abatement system to see how biomass combustion’s contribution to particulate emission can be controlled and reduced. During the tests, the focus was on particulate matter (PM) speciation in terms of sugar marker identification and determination. This study aims to increase knowledge to better understand the contribution of biomass plants to air pollution and differentiate it from the contributions of other sources, such as vehicular traffic or domestic heating.

The injudicious usage of antibiotics during infections caused by Gram-negative bacteria leads to the emergence of β-lactamases. Among them, the NDM-1 enzyme poses a serious threat to human health. Developing new antibiotics or inhibiting β-lactamases might become essential to reduce and prevent bacterial infections. Nanobodies (Nbs), the smallest antigen-binding single-domain fragments derived from Camelidae heavy-chain-only antibodies, targeting enzymes, are innovative alternatives to develop effective inhibitors. The biopanning of an immune VHH library after phage display has helped to retrieve recombinant antibody fragments with high inhibitory activity against recombinant-NDM-1 enzyme. Nb02NDM-1, Nb12NDM-1, and Nb17NDM-1 behaved as uncompetitive inhibitors against NDM-1 with Ki values in the nM range. Remarkably, IC50 values of 25.0 nM and 8.5 nM were noted for Nb02NDM-1 and Nb17NDM-1, respectively. The promising inhibition of NDM-1 by Nbs highlights their potential application in combating particular Gram-negative infections.

Maritime safety and the protection of the marine environment were the primary objectives of two European projects that the National Research Council of Italy had participated in, with numerical applications in two areas located in the northern part of Sardinia, Italy. Specifically, two operational Numerical Prediction Systems (NPS) for pollution risk management were developed; the first was applied to the area of the Bonifacio Strait and the Gulf of Asinara and the second to the port of Olbia. These systems are composed of many oceans and particle tracking numerical models. They are forced with meteorological and ocean data provided by the European Centre for Medium-Range Weather Forecasts and Copernicus Marine Service and their outputs have been compared with in situ measurements for preliminary calibration. A web graphical interface was ad hoc designed, specifically responding to projects’ needs, providing online access to a 3-day oceanographic forecast and advanced diagnostic variables like Oil Stranding Time, Risk Score and Water Age. These products, along with the interactive web platform, prove invaluable for marine spatial planning, prevention and emergency management at sea, for the use of competent governmental and local bodies.
