Fringe visibility and noise removal, are key success factors in interferometric techniques, where novel deep learning techniques can be applied. We test the use U-Net deep convolutional network applied to the obtained interference images, trained with an ad-hoc generated image dataset with complex fringe patterns, computed using high order Zernike polynomials.

Path Planning problems with Unmanned Aerial Vehicles (UAVs) are among the most studied knowledge areas in the related literature. However, few of them have been applied to groups of UAVs. The use of swarms allows to speed up the flight time and, thus, reducing the operational costs. When combined with Artificial Intelligence (AI) algorithms, a single system or operator can control all aircraft while optimal paths for each one can be computed. In order to introduce the current situation of these AI-based systems, a review of the most novel and relevant articles was carried out. This review was performed in two steps: first, a summary of the found articles; second, a quantitative analysis of the publications found based on different factors, such as the temporal evolution or the number of articles found based on different criteria. Therefore, this review provides not only a summary of the most recent work but it gives an overview of the trend in the use of AI algorithms in UAV swarms for Path Planning problems. The AI techniques of the articles found can be separated into four main groups based on their technique: reinforcement Learning techniques, Evolutive Computing techniques, Swarm Intelligence techniques, and, Graph Neural Networks. Among the bovine diseases, mastitis causes high economic losses in the dairy production system. Nowadays, detection under field conditions is mainly performed by the California Mastitis Test, which is considered the de facto standard. However, this method presents with problems of slowness and the expensiveness of the chemical-reactive process, which is deeply dependent on an expert's trained eye and, consequently, is highly imprecise. The aim of this work is to propose a new method for bovine mastitis detection under field conditions. The proposed method uses a low-cost, smartphone-connected NIR spectrometer which solves the aforementioned problems of slowness, expert dependency and disposability of the chemical methods. This method uses spectra in combination with two k-Nearest Neighbors models. The first model is used to detect the presence of mastitis while the second model classifies the positive cases into weak and strong. The resulting method was validated by using a leave-one-out technique where the ground truth was obtained by the California Mastitis Test. The detection model achieved an accuracy of 92.4%, while the one classifying the severity showed an accuracy of 95%. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

Treatment of low back pain usually includes exercise, analgesics, prostheses, and, in severe cases, surgery. Early treatments based on postural control are essential to prevent low back pain and mitigate permanent damage. We present a wearable device, with an estimated cost below U.S. $100, which uses inertial units with triaxial accelerometers, gyroscopes, and magnetometers to measure the orientation of three sections of the spine. The device integrates the absolute and relative orientation from the sensors to estimate the posture of the back in real-time and uses a fuzzy system to control a vibration unit that indicates the user when to correct the posture of the back. We validated the device in controlled conditions, obtaining an rms deviation ≤1.24° and conducted a preliminary clinical pilot study with patients afflicted by lumbar hyperlordosis or lumbar hypolordosis. We observed an improved postural control and a reduction of low back pain in all cases. These results show a promising potential of the device to reduce pain, improve postural therapies, and raise postural awareness in patients affected with low back pain. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

The process of refining the research question in a medical study depends greatly on the current background of the investigated subject. The information found in prior works can directly impact several stages of the study, namely the cohort definition stage. Besides previous published methods, researchers could also leverage on other materials, such as the output of cohort selection tools, to enrich and to accelerate their own work. However, this kind of information is not always captured by search engines. In this paper, we present a methodology, based on a combination of content-based retrieval and text annotation techniques, to identify relevant scientific publications related to a research question and to the selected data sources. Abstract Background Controversy exists with regard to the impact that the different components of diagnosis delay may have on the degree of invasion and prognosis in patients with colorectal cancer. The follow-up strategies after treatment also vary considerably. The aims of this study are: a) to determine if the symptoms-to-diagnosis interval and the treatment delay modify the survival of patients with colorectal cancer, and b) to determine if different follow-up strategies are associated with a higher survival rate. Methods/Design Multi-centre study with prospective follow-up in five regions in Spain (Galicia, Balearic Islands, Catalonia, Aragón and Valencia) during the period 2010-2012. Incident cases are included with anatomopathological confirmation of colorectal cancer (International Classification of Diseases 9th revision codes 153-154) that formed a part of a previous study (n = 953). At the time of diagnosis, each patient was given a structured interview. Their clinical records will be reviewed during the follow-up period in order to obtain information on the explorations and tests carried out after treatment, and the progress of these patients. Symptoms-to-diagnosis interval is defined as the time calculated from the diagnosis of cancer and the first symptoms attributed to cancer. Treatment delay is defined as the time elapsed between diagnosis and treatment. In non-metastatic patients treated with curative intention, information will be obtained during the follow-up period on consultations performed in the digestive, surgery and oncology departments, as well as the endoscopies, tumour markers and imaging procedures carried out. Local recurrence, development of metastases in the follow-up, appearance of a new tumour and mortality will be included as outcome variables. Actuarial survival analysis with Kaplan-Meier curves, Cox regression and competitive risk survival analysis will be performed. Discussion This study will make it possible to verify if the different components of delay have an impact on survival rate in colon cancer and rectal cancer. In consequence, this multi-centre study will be able to detect the variability present in the follow-up of patients with colorectal cancer, and if this variability modifies the prognosis. Ideally, this study could determine which follow-up strategies are associated with a better prognosis in colorectal cancer.
