Abstract Political responses to the COVID-19 pandemic led to changes in city soundscapes around the globe. From March to October 2020, a consortium of 261 contributors from 35 countries brought together by the Silent Cities project built a unique soundscape recordings collection to report on local acoustic changes in urban areas. We present this collection here, along with metadata including observational descriptions of the local areas from the contributors, open-source environmental data, open-source confinement levels and calculation of acoustic descriptors. We performed a technical validation of the dataset using statistical models run on a subset of manually annotated soundscapes. Results confirmed the large-scale usability of ecoacoustic indices and automatic sound event recognition in the Silent Cities soundscape collection. We expect this dataset to be useful for research in the multidisciplinary field of environmental sciences.

Time-domain Brillouin scattering (TDBS) is a developing technique for imaging/evaluation of materials, currently used in material science and biology. Three-dimensional imaging and characterization of polycrystalline materials has been recently reported, demonstrating evaluation of inclined material boundaries. Here, the TDBS technique is applied to monitor the destruction of a lithium niobate single crystal upon non-hydrostatic compression in a diamond anvil cell. The 3D TDBS experiments reveal, among others, modifications of the single crystal plate with initially plane-parallel surfaces, caused by non-hydrostatic compression, the laterally inhomogeneous variations of the plate thickness and relative inclination of opposite surfaces. Our experimental observations, supported by theoretical interpretation, indicate that TDBS enables the evaluation of materials interface orientation/inclination locally, from single point measurements, avoiding interface profilometry. A variety of observations reported in this paper paves the way to further expansion of the TDBS imaging use to analyze fascinating processes/phenomena occurring when materials are subjected to destruction.

In this paper, for the first time, we propose two new solutions to boost the data rate between small connected objects such as glasses and cams and the 5th generation (5G) mobile network, based on spatial modulation, single-carrier waveform, compact reconfigurable antennas at the object side and massive multiple input multiple output (M-MIMO) at the network side. In the first new wireless communication system, a “transmitting object” uses transmit spatial modulation with a compact reconfigurable antenna and a constant envelop amplifier to transmit in high data rate with low complexity and low power consumption. The space-time digital processing capability of the M-MIMO 5G base station is used to detect such signal. In the second new wireless communication system, a “receiving object” uses receive spatial modulation, a compact multiport antenna and a low complexity detection algorithm to receive in high data rate with a low complexity signal processing. The space-time beamforming capability of the M-MIMO 5G base stations is exploited to deliver a signal that is pre-equalized enough to be detected by the object. For the first time, we present experiments showing that M-MIMO allows for the re-introduction of single-carrier modulation waveform. For the first time, we present performance results obtained with real existing compact antennas and compact reconfigurable antennas, showing that the two new communication systems outperform conventional modulation in terms of energy efficiency and complexity.

The percentage of patients addicted only to benzodiazepines was higher among females than males. Benzodiazepine consumption had started as a drug addiction behavior in only 10% of cases. The main sources of prescription identified were general practitioners (52% of cases) or compliant pharmacists (25%). Overall, 15 different benzodiazepines were abused, with lormetazepam being the most commonly used (by 123 patients, 43.8% of the total).Conclusion: Our data show that, outside the population of multidrug addicts, there is an underestimated group of chronic benzodiazepine consumers who are often not referred to medical institutions for treatment. Even in the group of patients addicted to one substance only, we observed an abnormal number of requests for detoxification from lormetazepam, which appears to be more "popular" than other benzodiazepines. This paper presents a propagation channel simulator for polarized bidirectional wideband propagation channels. The generic channel model implemented in the simulator is a set of rays described by geometrical and propagation features such as the delay, 3D direction at the base station and mobile station and the polarization matrix. Thus, most of the wideband channel models including tapped delay line models, tap directional models, scatterer or geometrical models, ray-tracing or ray-launching results can be simulated. The simulator is composed of two major parts: firstly the channel complex impulse responses (CIR) generation and secondly the channel filtering. CIRs (or CIR matrices for MIMO configurations) are processed by specifying a propagation model, an antenna array configuration, a mobile direction, and a spatial sampling factor. For each sensor, independent arbitrary 3D vectorial antenna patterns can be defined. The channel filtering is based on the overlap-and-add method. The time-efficiency and parameterization of this method are discussed with realistic simulation setups. The global processing time for the CIR generation and the channel filtering is also evaluated for realistic configuration. A simulation example based on a bidirectional wideband channel model in urban environments illustrates the usefulness of the simulator.

A propagation experiment using a uniform linear array at the base station in rural and suburban areas is presented. Wideband parameters, cluster behaviour and angular parameters at the base and mobile stations are analysed. Statistical results are provided and typical situations presented. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]
