Abstract

In this study, we comment about a wrong proof, at least incomplete, of the closed Newton Cotes error formulas for integration in a closed interval [a,b].\left[a,b]. These error formulas appear as an intuitive generalization of the simple proof for the error formula of the trapezoidal rule, and their proofs present one controversial step, which converts the proofs in mischievous, or at least, this step needs a clear clarification that it is not easy to derive. The correct proof of such formulas comes from a technique based on the Peano kernel.

Abstract

Important discoveries over the past 15 years in the coastal area between Huelva and Malaga in Spain have illuminated the beginnings of the eighth-century BC Phoenician diaspora into the Western Mediterranean. Here, the authors combine Bayesian modelling of recently published radiocarbon dates with the latest archaeological data to investigate the Phoenician presence in southern Iberia. Their assessment of its significance for the Late Bronze and Early Iron Ages in the Western Mediterranean contributes not only to understanding the integration of the Phoenicians into local communities, but also to apprehending the mechanisms of colonisation and pre-colonial situations elsewhere in protohistoric Europe and other world contexts. Abstract

We examine the potential of prompting a large language model-based chatbot, ChatGPT, to generate functional simulation model code from a prose-based narrative. The simple narrative describes how the mode of transportation for elementary school students changed due to the COVID-19 pandemic and related factors, including a lack of available bus drivers, lack of mask enforcement on buses, and inclement weather. We document the process of providing this narrative to ChatGPT and further prompting the chatbot to generate model code to represent the narrative and to make it executable. We test ChatGPT's ability to use prose descriptions of a phenomenon to generate simulation models using three paradigms: discrete event system, system dynamics, and agent-based modeling. Our findings reveal that ChatGPT could not produce concise or executable models, facing higher difficulty when asked to do so in programming languages it was less familiar with. This analysis underscores the strengths and limitations of the current state of this technology for modeling and simulation. Furthermore, we propose how future advancements in Large Language Models may aid the simulation modeling process, increasing transparency and participation in multidisciplinary team efforts. 45. Comparison of Three Software Programs for Evaluating DIF by Means of the Mantel-Haenszel Procedure: EASY-DIF, DIFAS and EZDIF

Abstract

The analysis of differential item functioning (DIF) examines whether item responses differ according to characteristics such as language and ethnicity, when people with matching ability levels respond differently to the items. This analysis can be performed by calculating various statistics, one of the most important being the Mantel-Haenszel, which can be carried out with software programs such as EZDIF, DIFAS and, more recently, EASY-DIF. In this context, the aim of the present study is to compare these three software programs by using simulated and real data. The procedural characteristics and the results obtained from the same dataset were thus compared by the three programs. DIFAS and EASY-DIF always provide equivalent results, while EZDIF is less accurate when using the thin matching strategy. The results also showed that DIFAS and EASY-DIF were the easiest to run, especially for testing practitioners, with the second offering a broader range of results for key characteristics for detecting DIF. Abstract

Introduction: Since 2015, Colombia has faced a significant humanitarian challenge, receiving 2.9 million displaced Venezuelans. This study examines organizational cooperation in the humanitarian response to this migration crisis, aiming to understand the coordination dynamics among key organizations and actors. Methods: Our research combined interviews and web scraping to gather data on key actors and their relationships in the humanitarian response. We employed Social Network Analysis (SNA) to examine these relationships and the collaborative strategies among entities, focusing on how they address the migration challenges. Results: The results indicate that cooperation occurred through mediated channels, where established NGOs collaborated via coordination mechanisms established by international non-governmental organizations (INGOs), often involving diaspora volunteer-based organizations and through ad-hoc coordination. We also identified that organizations specializing in specific activities often exhibited limited coordination with others operating in the same sector. Lastly, the results suggest that coordination mechanisms played a crucial role in driving activities and facilitating the diversification of responses, partly through allocating financial resources. Discussion: This study contributes to the humanitarian aid and migration literature, focusing on Colombia's migration response. It employs a mixed- methods approach, including Social Network Analysis (SNA), to explore the dynamics within humanitarian networks. It highlights the role of the Venezuelan diaspora NGOs, challenging the conventional view of migrants solely as aid recipients. The research uncovers the complex roles of intermediaries and coordination mechanisms, offering new insights into constructing effective humanitarian network structures.
