Presently, no device allows the status of foot ulcers to be continuously monitored when patients are not hospitalized. In this study, we describe a temperature and a pH sensor capable of monitoring diabetic foot and venous leg ulcers developed in the frame of the seventh framework program European Union project SWAN-iCare (smart wearable and autonomous negative pressure device for wound monitoring and therapy). Temperature is measured by exploiting the variations in the electrical resistance of a nanocomposite consisting of multiwalled carbon nanotubes and poly(styrene-b-(ethylene-co-butylene)-b-styrene). The pH sensor used a graphene oxide (GO) layer that changes its electrical potential when pH changes. The temperature sensor has a sensitivity of ~85 Ω/°C in the range 25°C–50°C and a high repeatability (maximum standard deviation of 0.1% over seven repeated measurements). For a GO concentration of 4 mg/mL, the pH sensor has a sensitivity of ~42 mV/pH and high linearity (R2=0.99). Keywords: diabetic foot ulcer, wearable sensors, wound temperature, wound pH

Abstract

Sexual dichromatism in animals is usually associated with mating displays and is linked to strong sexual selection. Among amphibians, it has mostly been reported in anurans and only in a few caudates. Here, we investigated sexual dichromatism in the only two extant species of the genus Salamandrina, testing for its possible role in intraspecific communication during the mating rituals of these terrestrially mating salamanders. In both S. terdigitata and S. perspicillata, we highlighted that males have more conspicuous ventral colourations, yet this is limited to the throat region, namely featuring rounder, larger and brighter gular white patches than females. We also described a new mating ritual behaviour performed by male S. perspicillata, that is, a stereotyped throat hyperextension, that enhances the visibility of the dimorphic colouration of the gular region of males, presumably representing a visual cue directed to females. Abstract

EFSA’s remit in the risk assessment of GMOs is very broad encompassing genetically modified plants, microorganisms and animals and assessing their safety for humans, animals and the environment. The legal frame for GMOs is set by Directive 2001/18/EC on their release into the environment, and Regulation (EC) No 1829/2003 on GM food and feed. The main focus of EFSA’s GMO Panel and GMO Unit lies in the evaluation of the scientific risk assessment of new applications for market authorisation of GMOs, and in the development of corresponding guidelines for the applicants. The EFSA GMO Panel has elaborated comprehensive guidance documents on GM plants, GM microorganisms and GM animals, as well as on specific aspects of risk assessment such as the selection of comparators. EFSA also provides special scientific advice upon request of the European Commission; examples are post-market environmental monitoring of GMOs, and consideration of potential risks of new plant breeding techniques. The GMO Panel regularly reviews its guidance documents in the light of experience gained with the evaluation of applications, technological progress in breeding technologies and scientific developments in the diverse areas of risk assessment.

Abstract

A novel type of iron conversion process has been recently developed to produce dense and adherent LaFeO3 perovskite coatings onto ferritic stainless steel surfaces by reaction with La2O3 dissolved in specially‐formulated alkali molten carbonate baths. The major application of LaFeO3 perovskite coatings is for use as electrically conductive and Cr barrier layers for enhancing the functional performance of solid oxide fuel cell (SOFC) stainless steel interconnects. An overview of the molten salt bath conversion process including the effect of chemical accelerants on structure and morphology of the deposited perovskite coatings is illustrated in this work. Latest results on SOFC coating functional properties obtained in recent European Union (EU) funded projects are also briefly mentioned. In particular, the tight correlation between coating thickness and electrical functional properties in terms of area specific resistance is highlighted here. Although thickness dependency may indicate a mediocre electrical conductivity of LaFeO3 coatings produced by the conversion process, nonetheless very promising ASR results could be obtained in SOFC cathode environments at 700 °C with optimized coating structures and appropriate low coating thickness, thus suggesting a high potential of the conversion process for SOFC interconnect applications. Abstract

A basic model was applied to pure Ni and then to a single-phase superalloy. The high temperature deformation of the superalloy, a solution treated IN718, was investigated by torsion testing in a high-temperature regime (1000-1100 °C) where no precipitation of secondary phases was expected. The material exhibited the classical behaviour of alloys which undergo dynamic recrystallization. The peak-flow stress dependence on strain-rate and temperature was described by a physically-based set of constitutive equations, which took into account both dislocation hardening and solid solution strengthening, and was previously successfully used for the description of creep deformation of Cu, Al alloys and austenitic steels. The model provided an excellent description of the experimental data and for this reason can be considered an excellent basis for further development, which should take into account the precipitation of secondary phases. Abstract

Adults of Clinostomum spp. are digenetic trematodes found in fish-eating birds, reptiles and occasionally mammals, including humans. Freshwater snails serve as first intermediate hosts and many fish species and amphibians as second intermediate hosts. To date, amphibian hosts of Clinostomum metacercariae include members of urodele and anuran families in North America, but no data are available on infections of European amphibians, including newts. In this study, we characterize infections of Clinostomum complanatum metacercariae in four smooth (Lissotriton vulgaris) and 18 Italian crested newts (Triturus carnifex) from an artificial pond located in a protected area in Tuscany, Italy. Parasites were surgically removed from the infected newts and identified both morphologically and using sequences of a mitochondrial gene, cytochrome c oxidase I, and the ribosomal markers, internal transcribed spacers. Abstract

The association between oxaliplatin and 5-fluorouracil (5-FU) has been extensively reported to improve prognosis of gastric cancer patients. The present study is aimed at evaluating response rate and the toxicity profile of the association with oxaliplatin, 5-FU/lecovorin and epirubicin in gastric cancer patients with locally advanced or metastatic disease. Thirty-six patients have been enrolled and 35 evaluated. The treatment schedule was oxaliplatin (100 mg m(-2)), 5-FU (400 mg m(-2)), leucovorin (40 mg m(-2)) and epirubicin (60 mg m(-2)) intravenously. administered every 3 weeks for 6 months, for a total of 185 therapy cycles . Response rate and toxicity were assessed according to the international WHO criteria. Every patient received a mean of 5.3 therapy cycles in a day-hospital setting. Sixteen of 35 patients (46%) showed an objective response, two complete response and 14 partial response. Median time to progression was 33 weeks with an overall median survival of 49 weeks. During the study, anaemia grade 3 and neutropenia grade 3 were observed in 9 and 11% of patients respectively. A grade 3 periferic sensorial neuropathy was observed in 6% of patients. No life threatening or cardiac toxicity was recorded. The regimen used showed anticancer activity against gastric carcinoma, a tolerable toxicity profile and excellent patient compliance. Abstract

The overall survival for patients with metastatic melanoma is very poor, with a median survival of 8.5 months. In this Phase II trial, we assessed the efficacy, safety, and tolerability of a sequential biochemotherapy schedule, using dacarbazine as antiblastic agent and immunomodulant doses of interleukin-2 and interferon-alfa. Thirty-one eligible patients with metastatic melanoma received dacarbazine IV as antiblastic therapy and interluekin-2, plus interferon-alfa SC as sequential immunotherapy, for 6 months. Responding and nonprogressing patients were subsequently maintained on immunotherapy treatment for further 6 months. Twenty-nine patients had an adequate trial, and were assessable for both response and toxicities, with a median follow-up of 49 months. The overall response rate was 52 percent (3 CR and 12 PR), SD was 8 (27 percent) and PD were achieved in 6 patients (21 percent). 37. Occupational risk factors for renal cell carcinoma: a case-control study.

Abstract

A case-control study of 196 histologically proved cases of renal cell carcinoma and 347 controls matched for age at interview, sex, hospital, and interviewer was conducted in France between 1987 and 1991. A complete occupational history was recorded for each patient and occupations were coded blindly according to the International Standard Classification of Occupations. In women, none of the risks were significant. Among men, after adjustment for the educational level, cigarette smoking, and Quetelet index before diagnosis, significantly increased matched odds ratios (ORs) were found for sales workers (OR = 2.1, 95% confidence interval (95% CI) 1.2-4.0), managers (OR = 3.3, 95% CI 1.2-8.9), and textile workers and tailors (OR = 6.2, 95% CI 1.1-33.7). Abstract

The human biliary metabolism of the antitumor agent N2-methyl-9-hydroxyellipticinium acetate is described. Three major compounds have been identified by high-performance liquid chromatography and comparison with synthetic reference derivatives: the unchanged drug, the O-glucuronide conjugate and the cysteinyl-ellipticinium adduct. The latter one is the expected detoxification compound of an intermediate electrophilic quinone-imine derivative generated in vivo.
