This article investigates late twentieth‐century Corsican nationalism through the lens of gender, drawing attention to how women have sought to play an active and creative role in the movement. Through a series of interviews with female nationalist militants, this article will focus on what belonging to the nationalist movement meant to Corsican women. Gender relations within the nationalist movement reflected the changes taking place in a society fluctuating between tradition and modernity. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

This article reconstructs the genesis and developments of contemporary Corsican nationalism between 1959 to 1998, from the emergence of regionalism to the most dramatic phase of the resurgence of violence represented by the murder of Prefect Claude Érignac. The underlying hypothesis for this study is that Corsica embodies the community of destiny through a dialogue between tradition and modernity. With regard to permanency, what remains is a community and clan‐oriented mentality with a lasting impact upon nationalism. The emergence of contemporary Corsican nationalism must be viewed from a dual perspective: on the one hand, as a traditional system reserved for members of certain families according to a clan‐based approach; on the other, there is a protest movement that does not imply the dismantlement of the clan system but its renewal on the basis of criteria of democracy, equality and justice. The game experience, as it involves a set of rules and implies choices, leads one to develop a consciousness of exercising complexity. The game and particularly the video game, due to the interactivity that is inherent in it, is a participatory medium par excellence and therefore presents itself as a privileged practice of public history. During the 1930s, historiography in the sector of studies on Corsica grew considerably owing to the efforts of Gioacchino Volpe and his students at the Scuola di Storia Moderna e Contemporanea. Corsica was situated within the Mediterranean political space, and it acquired a geopolitical importance that shifted it outside its circumscribed regional context to the centre of the Mediterranean interests of the great European powers. This article analyses how Gioacchino Volpe and his students at the Scuola configured the question of the ‘Mediterranean political space’ as a matter of historical interest by analysing the case of Corsica. Rather than restricting themselves to a regionalist approach in their research on Corsica, Volpe and his students framed the island's history in the more general context of European and Mediterranean history.
