As wounds heal, embryos develop, cancer spreads, or asthma progresses, the cellular monolayer undergoes glass transition between solid-like jammed and fluid-like flowing states. During some of these processes, the cells undergo an epithelial-to-mesenchymal transition (EMT): they acquire in-plane polarity and become motile. Thus, how motility drives the glassy dynamics in epithelial systems is critical for the EMT process. However, no analytical framework that is indispensable for deeper insights exists. Here, we develop such a theory inspired by a well-known glass theory. One crucial result of this work is that the confluency affects the effective persistence time-scale of active force, described by its rotational diffusivity, $D_r^{\text{eff}}$. $D_r^{\text{eff}}$ differs from the bare rotational diffusivity, $D_r$, of the motile force due to cell shape dynamics, which acts to rectify the force dynamics: $D_r^{\text{eff}}$ is equal to $D_r$ when $D_r$ is small and saturates when $D_r$ is large. We test the theoretical prediction of $D_r^{\text{eff}}$ and how it affects the relaxation dynamics in our simulations of active Vertex model. This novel effect of $D_r^{\text{eff}}$ is crucial to understanding the new and previously published simulation data of active glassy dynamics in epithelial monolayers., Comment: 15 pages, 6 figures. The proposed new Electron-Ion Collider poses a technical and intellectual challenge for the detector design to accommodate the long-term diverse physics goals envisaged by the program. This requires a 4{\pi} detector system capable of reconstructing the energy and momentum of final state particles with high precision. The Electron-Ion Collider also requires identification of particles of different masses over a wide momentum range. A diverse spectrum of Particle Identification detectors has been proposed. Of the four types of detectors for hadron identification, three are based on Ring Imaging Cherenkov Counter technologies, and one is realized by the Time of Flight method. The quest for a novel photocathode, sensitive in the far vacuum ultra violet wavelength range and more robust than cesium iodide, motivated an R&D programme to explore nano-diamond (ND) based photocathodes, started by a collaboration between INFN and CNR Bari and INFN Trieste. Systematic measurements of the photo emission in different Ar-CH4 and Ar-CO2 gas mixtures with various types of ND powders and Hydrogenated ND (H-ND) powders are reported. A first study of the response of THGEMs coated with different photocathode materials is presented. We study the collinear fragmentation of highly energetic jets defined with a small jet radius. In particular, we investigate how the corresponding fragmentation functions differ from their hadronic counterpart defined in the common $\overline{\rm MS}$ scheme. We find that the anomalous dimensions governing the perturbative evolution of the two fragmentation functions differ starting at the two loop order. We compute for the first time the new anomalous dimensions at two loops and confirm our predictions by comparing the inclusive small-$R$ jet spectrum against a fixed order perturbative calculation at ${\cal O}(\alpha_s^2)$. To investigate the dependence of the anomalous dimension on the kinematic cutoff variable, we study the fragmentation functions of Cambridge jets defined with a transverse momentum cutoff as opposed to an angular cutoff $R$. We further study the evolution of the small-$R$ fragmentation function with an alternative cutoff scale, proportional to $z R$, representing the maximum possible transverse momentum of emissions within a jet. In these cases we find that the two-loop anomalous dimensions coincide with the $\overline{\rm MS}$ DGLAP ones, highlighting a correspondence between the $\overline{\rm MS}$ scheme and a transverse-momentum cutoff., Comment: Journal version

The next generation of gaseous photon detectors is requested to overcome the limitations of the available technology, in terms of resolution and robustness. The quest for a novel photocathode, sensitive in the far vacuum ultra violet wavelength range and more robust than present ones, motivated an R&D programme to explore nanodiamond based photoconverters, which represent the most promising alternative to cesium iodine. A procedure for producing the novel photocathodes has been defined and applied on THGEMs samples. Systematic measurements of the photo emission in different Ar/CH4 and Ar/CO2 gas mixtures with various types of nanodiamond powders have been performed. A comparative study of the response of THGEMs before and after coating demonstrated their full compatibility with the novel photocathodes.

With renewed interest in CO2 separations, carbon molecular sieving (CMS) membrane performance evaluation requires diffusion coefficients as inputs to have reliable estimate of the permeability. An optimal material is desired to have both high selectivity and permeability. Gases diffusing through dense, CMS and polymeric membranes experience extended sub-diffusive regimes which hinders reliable extraction of diffusion coefficients from mean squared displacement data. We improve the sampling of the diffusive landscape by implementing the trajectory extending kinetic Monte Carlo (TEKMC) technique to efficiently extend MD trajectories from ns to {\mu}s timescales. The obtained self-diffusion coefficient of pure CO2 in CMS membranes derived from 6FDA/BPDA-DAM precursor polymer melt is found in agreement with previous experimental findings. We also extend the TEKMC algorithm to evaluate the mixture diffusivities in binary mixtures to determine the permselectivity of CO2 in CH4 and N2 mixtures. The mixture diffusion coefficient of CO2 ranges from 1.3-7 x 10^{-6} cm6{2}s^{-1} in binary mixture CO2:CH4 which is significantly higher than the pure gas diffusion coefficient. Robeson plot comparisons show that the permselectivity obtained from pure gas diffusion data are significantly lower than that predicted using mixture diffusivity data. Specifically in the case of the CO2:N2 mixture we find that using mixture diffusivities led to permeslectivites lying above the Robeson limit highlighting the importance of using mixture diffusivity data for an accurate evaluation of the membrane performance. Combined with gas solubilities obtained from grand-canonical Monte Carlo simulations, our work shows that simulations with the TEKMC method can be used to reliably evaluate the performance of materials for gas separations., Comment: Software available on https://github.com/PKMLab/tekmc Accepted on October 25, 2023 in The Journal of Physical Chemistry B
