18. Ways in Which School Psychologists Can Identify Suitable Apps for Supporting the Self-Management of Asthma by Students

Abstract

The effective management of chronic asthma requires long-term adherence to both pharmacotherapy and optimal self-management practices. The use of mobile applications (apps) offer a promising and cost-effective platform to support the self-management of asthma. However, students as consumers may not always be sufficiently knowledgeable to select the best app to link with the management of their condition. If school psychologists become familiar with apps, they may be better positioned to provide guidance to students about app selection and how to identify apps that include appropriate behaviour change techniques (BCT). Accordingly, the overall aim of this study was to present a method by which school psychologists could identify quality apps for the purpose of supporting students who need to self-manage chronic asthma. A directed content analysis was used to evaluate asthma apps, based on behaviour change content and app quality. A systematic selection process yielded a total of 36 apps (26 from iTunes, 12 from Google Play) that were evaluated using two published rating measures. Overall, apps contained limited BCTs and a low level of quality health information. Conversely, apps with higher quality health information utilised a larger range of BCTs than lower quality apps. It was concluded that while apps designed to support the management of asthma appear to be a potentially valuable addition to traditional interventions, the technology is still in its infancy, and school psychologists should be aware of the limited behaviour change content, age appropriateness of apps, and whether the health information provided is evidence-based.

22. A Framework to Assist School Psychologists and Counsellors in Recommending Quality Apps for Supporting Diabetes Self-Management: An Illustrative Assessment Using Content Analysis

Abstract

A framework was examined to assist school psychologists and counsellors in recommending quality apps for supporting diabetes self-management. A content analysis was undertaken to assess behaviour change strategies in Apple and Android smartphone apps for the self-management of type 2 diabetes. The Behaviour Change Technique Taxonomy was used to assess the presence of behaviour change strategies, while the Mobile App Rating Scale was used to assess overall app quality. Raters found, on average, 7.13 behaviour change techniques out of a possible 93, indicating few behaviour change techniques in apps for the self-management of Type 2 diabetes. Analysis indicated that apps of a higher overall quality tended to incorporate more behaviour change strategies. It was concluded that mental-health professionals are advantaged if they are able to assess and refine selection tools for matching apps with the needs of students with diabetes.

29. A Review of the Processes by Which School Psychologists and Counsellors Can Use Taxonomies to Evaluate Health-Related Apps

Abstract

School students are increasingly using apps for health-related purposes, either on their own or when recommended by psychologists or counsellors, as apps offer a way to assist students to change their behaviour. However, there is a growing need for psychologists and counsellors to be able to evaluate the quality and usefulness of such apps to effect behaviour change. This study was therefore undertaken to identify methods by which school psychologists and counsellors could evaluate health-related apps for clinical use or research purposes. After examining 15 studies of apps that met the inclusion criteria, it was clear that researchers used a number of taxonomies to evaluate the apps. There were seven taxonomies identified, of which five were generalisable to all health conditions, with the behaviour change technique (BCT) taxonomy being the most comprehensive, containing 13 key behaviour strategies. Despite the utility of the taxonomies to identify the amount of behaviour change content within the apps, it was difficult to determine how the behaviour change strategies were measured, thus reducing the ability to predict app effectiveness. Approaches to improving methods by which apps can be developed and evaluated are proposed.

35. Primary Prevention of Reading Failure: Effect of Universal Peer Tutoring in the Early Grades

Abstract

Reading is typically considered a survival skill in our technology- and literacy-bound culture. Individuals who struggle with learning to read are at significantly elevated risk for a number of negative outcomes, including school failure, under- and unemployment, and special education placement. Thus, those who do not learn to read fluently will likely be a greater drain on society's resources. The authors examined the effects of a universal (school district-wide) implementation of a well-validated peer-tutoring reading intervention as a system-wide prevention measure in kindergarten through Grade 3 in a small metropolitan area in Canada. Results suggest that nearly all children demonstrated improved reading fluency over time. Yet those at highest-risk for poor outcomes, including those living in poverty and those who face learning challenges due to English as a second-language status or special education enrollment, did not make parallel gains to same-age peers in more affluent schools. Implications for educational policy are discussed.

It may be an isolated disorder or secondary to a particular disease. According to immunoglobulin composition, cryoglobulinemia is classified into three types. In mixed cryoglobulinemia (types II and III), vascular deposition of cryoglobulin-containing immune complexes and complement may induce a clinical syndrome, characterized by systemic vasculitis and inflammation – cryoglobulinemic vasculitis (CryoVas). Most common clinical manifestations in CryoVas are skin lesions (orthostatic purpura and ulcers), weakness, peripheral neuropathy, Raynaud’s phenomenon, sicca syndrome, membranoproliferative glomerulonephritis, and arthralgia and seldom arthritis. In patients with mixed cryoglobulinemia, prevalence of anti-hepatitis C virus (HCV) antibodies and/or HCV RNA, detected by polymerase chain reaction (PCR), is reported to be up to 90%, indicating a significant role of HCV in the development of this condition. The goals of therapy for mixed cryoglobulinemia include immunoglobulin level reduction and antigen elimination. CryoVas not associated with HCV infection should be treated according to treatment recommendations for small-vessel vasculitides. CryoVas associated with chronic HCV infection should be treated with antivirals along with immunosuppressive drugs, with or without plasmapheresis, depending on disease severity and organ involvement. Patients who do not respond to first-line therapy may achieve remission when treatment with rituximab is started as second-line therapy. In HCV-related CryoVas, antiviral therapy should be given along with rituximab in order to achieve complete or partial remission. Moreover, rituximab has proven to be a glucocorticoid-sparing medication. Other potential therapies for refractory CryoVas include mycophenolate mofetil and belimumab, while tumor necrosis factor (TNF) inhibitors are not effective.
