In contrast to the conventional planar circuit where the magnetic field is parallel to the plane, here a new planar circuit, in which the electric field is parallel to the planar circuit, is proposed and called an E-plane planar circuit. Hence, the conventional planar circuit becomes an H-plane planar circuit. in this paper, first, the features and advantages of the E-plane planar circuit are described in comparison with the H-plane planar circuit. Then the planar circuit equations which are based on the concepts of magnetic mode voltage and current are derived from Maxwell's equations. Moreover, the concept of magnetic mode impedance is proposed as a tool for the analysis of an arbitrarily shaped E-plane planar circuit with metal side walls, and its equivalent circuit is derived by expressing the magnetic mode impedance as an expansion of the normal modes of the planar circuit. As an example of the analysis, a square- shaped planar circuit is selected and the essential problems caused by the analysis mentioned here are examined. Wideband frequency characteristics are calculated and by comparison with the experimental values, the validity of this method is confirmed. Finally, as an example of an arbitrarily shaped planar circuit, the wideband frequency characteristics of a rectangular-waveguide E- plane corner-cut right angle bend are calculated by the forementioned method.
