2. Republication of 'Educational Services for the Severely and Profoundly Handicapped'

Abstract

The middle part of the 1970s marked the beginning of an era of enhanced concern for the education, treatment, and care of individuals with severe disabilities. For our republished article in this issue of the "Journal of Special Education's" ("JSE") 50th anniversary volume, we have selected a piece by Dr. Norris Haring, founding President of the advocacy organization known as TASH and one of the individuals, if not THE individual, who was at the forefront of the movement to improve the lives of people with severe disabilities. Working at the University of Washington, Haring and colleagues spearheaded efforts to develop and disseminate interventions and proven practices for this group of individuals with exceptionalities and their families. Looking back, there have been great changes from personnel preparation, parent involvement and training, and community support efforts, but despite important advances in these and other areas, great needs remain.

6. The Social Participation of Students with Deaf-Blindness in Educational Settings.

Abstract

This study of the patterns of contact among 12 students (ages 4-17) with deaf-blindness and their nondisabled age peers at school revealed that students engaged in slightly less than 90 minutes per day in social contact. Many students with deaf-blindness were not developing stable (repeating) contacts with any of their peers. (Author/JDD)

Abstract

Salt marshes are intertidal ecosystems valuable for services including coastal protection and carbon sequestration. Restoration of salt marshes is popular in this era of climate change and sea-level rise, especially in areas where marshes have been historically altered, including in the Bay of Fundy. Salt marsh restoration involves landcover change through time as a community of halophytic vegetation develops in the study area. Restoration sites are difficult to survey using traditional on-foot methods, and developing remote sensing methods to survey them would increase efficiency of monitoring. The purpose of our study was to assess the capability of UAV multispectral imagery to map landcovers in a salt marsh restoration site in the Musquash Estuary, New Brunswick, Canada. We used the Random Forests (RF) supervised classifier and validated our maps using field data. We also evaluated the importance of textural features by running two classifications, with and without textural features. The classification omitting textural features had lower classification and validation accuracies (96.29 % and 91.23 %, respectively) than the classification and validation accuracies obtained by including textural features (99.56 % and 96.84 %, respectively). Abstract

The objective of this work was to investigate how the preferred iontophoretic transport pathways of a molecule depend on its physicochemical properties. Laser scanning confocal microscopy (LSCM) was used to visualize in hairless mouse skin the distribution of two fluorescent penetrants: calcein, a multiply charged (-4), hydrophilic molecule; and nile red, a lipophilic, neutral compound. Iontophoresis and passive delivery of nile red showed that the percutaneous transport of this compound occurred via (inter- and intracellular) pathways that were clearly distinct from those followed by calcein. Although the distribution of nile red was influenced somewhat by the passage of current relative to the passive control, there was relatively little enhancement of the penetration of this compound into the skin. Calcein, on the other hand, did not passively enter the skin. However, with iontophoresis, greatly enhanced transport, with an important contribution from follicular structures, was observed. Sequential (dual) transport of the two fluorophores illustrated clearly the different pathways followed and reflected the transport and visualization studies of the individual species. It may be concluded, therefore, that the iontophoretic pathways followed across the skin are dictated by the physicochemical properties of the penetrant and by its affinity for the different environments available.
