Abstract

The NA48/2 experiment at CERN collected two data samples with minimum bias trigger conditions in 2003 and 2004. A measurement of the rate and dynamic properties of the rare decay K ± → π ± γ γ from these data sets based on 149 decay candidates with an estimated background of 15.5 ± 0.7 events is reported. The model-independent branching ratio in the kinematic range z = ( m γ γ / m K ) 2 > 0.2 is measured to be B MI ( z > 0.2 ) = ( 0.877 ± 0.089 ) × 10 − 6 , and the branching ratio in the full kinematic range assuming a particular Chiral Perturbation Theory description to be B ( K π γ γ ) = ( 0.910 ± 0.075 ) × 10 − 6 .

Abstract

Important new results have been presented at this conference. The direct violation of CP in K0 → π + π has been firmly established in two independent experiments, NA48 at CERN and KTeV at Fermilab. Both Babar at SLAC and Belle at Kek have determined the CP violation in [Formula: see text] oscillations through the study of the golden KS + Ψ decay mode. The observed CP violation agrees with the expectations of the Standard model, based on the quark-mixing phenomenon. The first results of the Sudbury Neutrino Observatory, SNO, suggest that the long-lasting solar neutrino puzzle has been finally solved in terms of neutrino oscillations. Results appeared after the conference which modify the theoretical prediction of the muon anomaly. This new result, if confirmed, would drastically reduce the significance of the discrepancy between the theoretically expected value for the muon anomaly and the recent results of the Brookhaven experiment.

Abstract

We report results from a new measurement of the $K_{e4}$ decay $K^{\pm} \rightarrow \pi^{+}\pi^{-}e^{\pm}\nu$ by the NA48/2 collaboration at the CERN SPS, based on a partial sample of more than 670000 $K_{e4}$ decays in both charged modes collected in 2003. The form factors of the hadronic current (F, G, H) and $\pi\pi$ phase difference ($\delta=\delta_{s}-\delta_{p}$) have been measured in ten independent bins of the $\pi\pi$ mass spectrum to investigate the variation. A sizeable acceptance at large $\pi\pi$ mass, a low background and a very good resolution contribute to an improved experimental accuracy, a factor two better than in the previous measurement, when extracting the $\pi\pi$ scattering lengths $a^{0}_{0}$ and $a^{2}_{0}$. Under the assumption of isospin symmetry and using numerical solutions of the Roy equations, the following values are obtained in the plane ($a^{0}_{0}, a^{2}_{0}): a^{0}_{0}=0.233 \pm 0.016_{stat} \pm 0.007_{syst}, a^{2}_{0}=-0.0471 \pm 0.011_{stat} \pm 0.004_{syst}$. The presence of potentially large isospin effects is also considered and will allow comparison with precise predictions from Chiral Perturbation Theory.
