The Cancer Genome Atlas (TCGA) is one of the largest biorepositories of digital histology. Deep learning (DL) models have been trained on TCGA to predict numerous features directly from histology, including survival, gene expression patterns, and driver mutations. However, we demonstrate that these features vary substantially across tissue submitting sites in TCGA for over 3,000 patients with six cancer subtypes. Additionally, we show that histologic image differences between submitting sites can easily be identified with DL. Site detection remains possible despite commonly used color normalization and augmentation methods, and we quantify the image characteristics constituting this site-specific digital histology signature. We demonstrate that these site-specific signatures lead to biased accuracy for prediction of features including survival, genomic mutations, and tumor stage. Furthermore, ethnicity can also be inferred from site-specific signatures, which must be accounted for to ensure equitable application of DL. Gold nanoparticles (AuNPs) have recently gained attention because of their unique optical, physical and electrical properties. AuNPs increase the efficacy of biomedical applications in diagnostic treatments for infectious diseases, by targeting or labeling target cells/bioactive compounds. However, it is imperative to develop the regimens for more accurate diagnostic tools, preventive care and effective therapy. Our critical and comprehensive review presents emerging avenues of molecular diagnostics as well as therapeutics translated into clinical approaches. This manuscript critically reviews the rampant future of AuNPs in the diagnosis and treatment of the most important diseases, such as cancer and viruses of respiratory system.

Building on the potential capability of VOCs to detect illness, the U.K. company Owlstone Medical is now developing a testing platform called Breath Biopsy [1] as a noninvasive diagnostic method and is collaborating with clinicians, researchers, and other biomedical companies around the world on its potential application for early detection of various cancers, respiratory illnesses, and immune diseases.

ZIEL: Beschreibung der Methoden zur Erfassung selbstberichteter Krebserkrankungen und Tumorlokalisationen in der NAKO und Darstellung erster Ergebnisse. MATERIAL UND METHODEN: In einem computergestützten, standardisierten persönlichen Interview wurden 101.787 Teilnehmende (54.526 Frauen, 47.261 Männer) gefragt, ob bei ihnen jemals eine Krebserkrankung (bösartiger Tumor einschließlich in situ) ärztlich diagnostiziert wurde und wie viele Krebserkrankungen sie hatten. Anhand einer Liste wurde die Tumorlokalisation erfragt. Absolute und relative Häufigkeiten von Selbstangaben zu Krebserkrankungen insgesamt und einzelnen Tumorlokalisationen wurden berechnet und mit krebsregisterbasierten Daten verglichen. ERGEBNISSE: Eine ärztlich diagnostizierte Krebserkrankung wurde von 9,4 % der Frauen und 7,0 % der Männer berichtet. Von den Personen, die eine Krebserkrankung berichteten, gaben 88,3 % der Teilnehmenden an, nur eine Krebserkrankung gehabt zu haben. Bei Frauen war die häufigste bösartige Krebserkrankung Brustkrebs, gefolgt von Gebärmutterhalskrebs und malignem Melanom, bei Männern Prostatakrebs, gefolgt von malignem Melanom und Darmkrebs. BACKGROUND: In the German National Cohort (NAKO Gesundheitsstudie), the largest prospective cohort study in Germany, data on self-reported cancer diagnoses are now available for the first half of participants. OBJECTIVES: Description of the methods to assess self-reported cancer diagnoses and type of cancer in the NAKO and presentation of first results. MATERIAL AND METHODS: In a computer-assisted, standardized personal interview, 101,787 participants (54,526 women, 47,261 men) were asked whether they had ever been diagnosed with cancer (malignant tumors including in situ) by a physician and how many cancer diagnoses they had. The type of cancer was classified with a list. Absolute and relative frequencies of self-reported cancer diagnoses and types of cancer were calculated and compared with cancer registry data. RESULTS: A physician-diagnosed cancer was reported by 9.4% of women and 7.0% of men. Of the participants who reported a cancer diagnosis, 88.3% reported to have had only one cancer diagnosis. In women, the most frequent malignancies were breast cancer, cervical cancer, and melanoma. In men, the most frequent malignancies were prostate cancer, melanoma, and colorectal cancer. Comparing the frequencies of cancer diagnoses reported by 45- to 74-year-old NAKO participants within the last five years to cancer registry-based 5‑year prevalences, most types of cancer were less frequent in the NAKO, with the exception of melanoma in men and women, cervical cancer and liver cancer in women, and bladder cancer and breast cancer in men. CONCLUSIONS: The NAKO is a rich data basis for future investigations of incident cancer.

At present, cancer is obviously a major threat to human health worldwide. Accurate diagnosis and treatment are in great demand and have become an effective method to alleviate the development of cancer and improve the survival rate of patients. A large number of theranostic probes that combine diagnosis and treatment methods have been developed as promising tools for tumor precision medicine. Among them, fluorescent theranostic probes have developed rapidly in the frontier research field of precision medicine with their real time, low toxicity, and high-resolution merit. Therefore, this review focuses on recent advances in the development of fluorescent theranostic probes, as well as their applications for cancer diagnosis and treatment. Initially, small-molecule fluorescent theranostic probes mainly including tumor microenvironment-responsive fluorescent prodrugs and phototherapeutic probes were introduced. Subsequently, nanocomposite probes are expounded based on four types of nano-fluorescent particles combining different therapies (chemotherapy, photothermal therapy, photodynamic therapy, gene therapy, etc.). Then, the capsule-type "all in one" probes, which occupy an important position in theranostic probes, are summarized according to the surface carrier type. This review aims to present a comprehensive guide for researchers in the field of tumor-related theranostic probe design and development.

The autocatalytic HCR-DNAzyme platform was constructed as a versatile amplification platform for intracellular microRNA imaging by integrating hybridization chain reaction (HCR) circuit with DNAzyme biocatalysis. The HCR-assembled multifunctional DNAzyme nanowires produce new HCR triggers and numerous transducer DNAzyme amplifier, and thus shows great promise in earlier cancer diagnosis.

Molecular signatures of cancer, e.g., genes or microRNAs (miRNAs), have been recognized very important in predicting the occurrence of cancer. From gene-expression and miRNA-expression data, the challenge of identifying molecular signatures lies in the huge number of molecules compared to the small number of samples. To address this issue, in this paper, we propose a heuristic algorithm to identify molecular signatures, termed HAMS, for cancer diagnosis by modeling it as a multi-objective optimization problem. In the proposed HAMS, an elitist-guided individual update strategy is proposed to obtain a small number of molecular signatures, which are closely related with cancer and contain less redundant signatures. Experimental results demonstrate that the proposed HAMS achieves superior performance over seven state-of-the-art algorithms on both gene-expression and miRNA-expression datasets. We also validate the biological significance of the molecular signatures obtained by the proposed HAMS through biological analysis.

A sandwich-type surface-enhanced Raman scattering (SERS) sensor using dual aptamers and gold-enhanced Raman signal probes has been successfully constructed for the detection of tumor-derived extracellular vesicles. The simple and sensitive sensor has the capability to detect tumor extracellular vesicles in 10-fold diluted human serum samples.

Biospecimens acquired during routine medical practice are the primary sources of molecular information about patients and their diseases that underlies precision medicine and translational research. In cancer care, molecular analysis of biospecimens is especially common because it often determines treatment choices and may be used to monitor therapy in real time. However, patient specimens are collected, handled, and processed according to routine clinical procedures during which they are subjected to factors that may alter their molecular quality and composition. Such artefactual alteration may skew data from molecular analyses, render analysis data uninterpretable, or even preclude analysis altogether if the integrity of a specimen is severely compromised. As a result, patient care and safety may be affected, and medical research dependent on patient samples may be compromised. Despite these issues, there is currently no requirement to control or record preanalytical variables in clinical practice with the single exception of breast cancer tissue handled according to the guideline jointly developed by the American Society of Clinical Oncology and College of American Pathologists (CAP) and enforced through the CAP Laboratory Accreditation Program. Recognizing the importance of molecular data derived from patient specimens, the CAP Personalized Healthcare Committee established the Preanalytics for Precision Medicine Project Team to develop a basic set of evidence-based recommendations for key preanalytics for tissue and blood specimens. If used for biospecimens from patients, these preanalytical recommendations would ensure the fitness of those specimens for molecular analysis and help to assure the quality and reliability of the analysis data.

Nanozymes are nanomaterials with intrinsic enzyme-like characteristics that have been booming over the past decade because of their capability to address the limitations of natural enzymes such as low stability, high cost, and difficult storage. Along with the rapid development and ever-deepening understanding of nanoscience and nanotechnology, nanozymes hold promise to serve as direct surrogates of traditional enzymes by mimicking and further engineering the active centers of natural enzymes. In 2007, we reported the first evidence that Fe3O4 nanoparticles (NPs) have intrinsic peroxidase-mimicking activity, and since that time, hundreds of nanomaterials have been found to mimic the catalytic activity of peroxidase, oxidase, catalase, haloperoxidase, glutathione peroxidase, uricase, methane monooxygenase, hydrolase, and superoxide dismutase. Uniquely, a broad variety of nanomaterials have been reported to simultaneously exhibit dual- or multienzyme mimetic activity. For example, Fe3O4 NPs show pH-dependent peroxidase-like and catalase-like activities; Prussian blue NPs simultaneously possess peroxidase-, catalase-, and superoxide dismutase-like activity; and Mn3O4 NPs mimic all three cellular antioxidant enzymes including superoxide dismutase, catalase, and glutathione peroxidase. Taking advantage of the physiochemical properties of nanomaterials, nanozymes have shown a broad range of applications from in vitro detection to replacing specific enzymes in living systems. With the emergence of the new concept of "nanozymology", nanozymes have now become an emerging new field connecting nanotechnology and biology. Since the landmark paper on nanozymes was published in 2007, we have extensively explored their catalytic mechanism, established the corresponding standards to quantitatively determine their catalytic activities, and opened up a broad range of applications from biological detection and environmental monitoring to disease diagnosis and biomedicine development. Here we mainly focus on our progress in the systematic design and construction of functionally specific nanozymes, the standardization of nanozyme research, and the exploration of their applications for replacing natural enzymes in living systems. We also show that, by combining the unique physicochemical properties and enzyme-like catalytic activities, nanozymes can offer a variety of multifunctional platforms with a broad of applications from in vitro detection to in vivo monitoring and therapy. For instance, targeting antibody-conjugated ferromagnetic nanozymes simultaneously provide three functions: target capture, magnetic separation, and nanozyme color development for target detection. We finally will address the prospect of nanozyme research to become "nanozymology". We expect that nanozymes with unique physicochemical properties and intrinsic enzyme-mimicking catalytic properties will attract broad interest in both fundamental research and practical applications and offer new opportunities for traditional enzymology.

Urinary tests have been used as noninvasive, cost-effective tools for screening, diagnosis and monitoring of diseases since ancient times. As we progress through the 21st century, modern analytical platforms have enabled effective measurement of metabolites, with promising results for both a deeper understanding of cancer pathophysiology and, ultimately, clinical translation. The first study to measure metabolomic urinary cancer biomarkers using NMR and mass spectrometry (MS) was published in 2006 and, since then, these techniques have been used to detect cancers of the urological system (kidney, prostate and bladder) and nonurological tumours including those of the breast, ovary, lung, liver, gastrointestinal tract, pancreas, bone and blood. This growing field warrants an assessment of the current status of research developments and recommendations to help systematize future research. Urinalysis has long been used as a tool for managing diseases, but 21st century techniques have enabled measurement of metabolomic urinary cancer biomarkers using NMR and mass spectrometry. In this Review, the authors discuss the current status of research developments and offer recommendations to help systematize future research in the field.

PURPOSE: The association between geriatric assessment (GA)–identified impairments and long-term health care use in older cancer survivors remains unknown. Our objective was to evaluate whether a GA performed at cancer diagnosis was predictive of hospitalizations and long-term care (LTC) use in older adult cancer survivors. METHODS: Older adults with GA performed between 3 months before through 6 months after diagnosis were included (N = 125). Patients with Medicare Parts A and B coverage and no managed care were identified. Hospitalizations and LTC use (skilled nursing or assisted living) were assessed up to 5 years postdiagnosis. GA risk measures were evaluated in separate Poisson models estimating the relative risk (RR) for hospital and LTC visits, adjusting for age and Charlson comorbidity score. RESULTS: The mean age of patients was 74 years, and the majority were female (80%) and white (90%). Breast cancer (64%) and early-stage disease (stages 0 to III, 77%) were common. Prefrail/frail status (RR, 2.5; P < .001), instrumental activities of daily living impairment (RR, 5.47; P < .001), and limitations in climbing stairs (RR, 2.94; P < .001) were associated with increased hospitalizations. Prefrail/frail status (RR, 1.86; P < .007), instrumental activities of daily living impairment (RR, 4.58; P < .001), presence of falls (RR, 6.73; P < .001), prolonged Timed Up and Go (RR, 5.45; P < .001), and limitations in climbing stairs (RR, 1.89; P < .005) were associated with LTC use. CONCLUSION: GA-identified impairments were associated with increased hospitalizations and LTC use among older adults with cancer. GA-focused interventions should be targeted toward high-risk patients to reduce long-term adverse health care use in this vulnerable population.

Liquid biopsy is indispensable for the resolution of current medical issues, such as the cost of developing new drugs and predicting responses of patients to drugs. In this sense, not only the technology for liquid biopsy but also the target biomolecules for biomarkers need to be identified. Extracellular vesicles (EVs), which contain various proteins, including membrane-bound proteins, and RNAs, including mRNA and long/short noncoding RNAs, have emerged as ideal targets for liquid biopsy. These complex biomolecules are covered by a lipid bilayer, which can protect them from degradation. In this review, we review current topics regarding EVs as cancer biomarkers and introduce technologies used for these recently emerged biomolecules., Cancer diagnosis: good things come in small packages Extracellular vesicles (EVs), small packets of proteins and RNAs secreted by cells and carried in the bloodstream, are promising diagnostic markers for cancer. Developing new markers that can be collected non-invasively can dramatically improve detection and treatment of cancer. EVs secreted by cells, including tumor cells, send messages to distant cells. EVs collected from blood samples can potentially be excellent disease markers. Takahiro Ochiya and Nobuyoshi Kosaka at Tokyo Medical University in Japan and co-workers have reviewed available EV technology. They report that tumors reliably secrete diagnostic EVs, revealing the origin and state of the tumor. Some EVs can even be used to predict whether a cancer might spread to another tissue. With improvement of methods for isolation and standardization, EVs could provide sensitive markers for early diagnosis of many cancers.

An increasing number of studies have indicated that long-non-coding RNAs (lncRNAs) play critical roles in many important biological processes. Predicting potential lncRNA-disease associations can improve our understanding of the molecular mechanisms of human diseases and aid in finding biomarkers for disease diagnosis, treatment, and prevention. In this paper, we constructed a bipartite network based on known lncRNA-disease associations; based on this work, we proposed a novel model for inferring potential lncRNA-disease associations. Specifically, we analyzed the properties of the bipartite network and found that it closely followed a power-law distribution. Moreover, to evaluate the performance of our model, a leave-one-out cross-validation (LOOCV) framework was implemented, and the simulation results showed that our computational model significantly outperformed previous state-of-the-art models, with AUCs of 0.8825, 0.9004, and 0.9292 for known lncRNA-disease associations obtained from the LncRNADisease database, Lnc2Cancer database, and MNDR database, respectively. Thus, our approach may be an excellent addition to the biomedical research field in the future.

Microfluidic devices can be thought of as comprising interconnected miniaturized compartments performing multiple experimental tasks individually or in parallel in an integrated fashion. Due to its small size, portability, and low cost, attempts have been made to incorporate detection assays into microfluidic platforms for diseases such as cancer and infection. Some of these technologies have served as point-of-care and sample-to-answer devices. The methods for detecting biomarkers in different diseases usually share similar principles and can conveniently be adapted to cope with arising health challenges. The COVID-19 pandemic is one such challenge that is testing the performance of both our conventional and newly-developed disease diagnostic technologies. In this mini-review, we will first look at the progress made in the past few years in applying microfluidics for liquid biopsy and infectious disease detection. Following that, we will use the current pandemic as an example to discuss how such technological advancements can help in the current health challenge and better prepare us for future ones.

The impacts of COVID-19 present substantial challenges and opportunities in global oncology

Extracellular vesicles (EVs) are heterogeneous lipid containers with a complex molecular cargo comprising several populations with unique roles in biological processes. These vesicles are closely associated with specific physiological features, which makes them invaluable in the detection and monitoring of various diseases. EVs play a key role in pathophysiological processes by actively triggering genetic or metabolic responses. However, the heterogeneity of their structure and composition hinders their application in medical diagnosis and therapies. This diversity makes it difficult to establish their exact physiological roles, and the functions and composition of different EV (sub)populations. Ensemble averaging approaches currently employed for EV characterization, such as western blotting or ‘omics’ technologies, tend to obscure rather than reveal these heterogeneities. Recent developments in single-vesicle analysis have made it possible to overcome these limitations and have facilitated the development of practical clinical applications. In this review, we discuss the benefits and challenges inherent to the current methods for the analysis of single vesicles and review the contribution of these approaches to the understanding of EV biology. We describe the contributions of these recent technological advances to the characterization and phenotyping of EVs, examination of the role of EVs in cell-to-cell communication pathways and the identification and validation of EVs as disease biomarkers. Finally, we discuss the potential of innovative single-vesicle imaging and analysis methodologies using microfluidic devices, which promise to deliver rapid and effective basic and practical applications for minimally invasive prognosis systems. Understanding the heterogeneity of extracellular vesicles is crucial for unraveling their functions. This review describes the benefits, challenges and contributions of the state-of-the art methods used in single-vesicle analysis.

In the midst of the coronavirus disease 2019 (COVID-19) pandemic, we are seeing widespread disease burden affecting patients of all ages across the globe. However, much remains to be understood as clinicians, epidemiologists, and researchers alike are working to describe and characterize the disease process while caring for patients at the frontlines. We describe the case of a 6-month-old infant admitted and diagnosed with classic Kawasaki disease, who also screened positive for COVID-19 in the setting of fever and minimal respiratory symptoms. The patient was treated per treatment guidelines, with intravenous immunoglobulin and high-dose aspirin, and subsequently defervesced with resolution of her clinical symptoms. The patient's initial echocardiogram was normal, and she was discharged within 48 hours of completion of her intravenous immunoglobulin infusion, with instruction to quarantine at home for 14 days from the date of her positive test results for COVID-19. Further study of the clinical presentation of pediatric COVID-19 and the potential association with Kawasaki disease is warranted, as are the indications for COVID-19 testing in the febrile infant.

Since the emergence of patients with COVID-19 in December 2019, the virus has rapidly spread worldwide. Children with malignant tumors are more prone to be infected and develop severe infections. Prevention and control of the pandemic and ensuring the progress of the cancer diagnosis and treatment is a significant problem in the current scenario. This article proposes a scientific management system for patients with solid tumors to guarantee emergency surgery, rationally arrange limited-term surgery, appropriately defer elective surgery, and guarantee regular chemotherapy, while protecting children from SARS-CoV-2 infection and ensuring the continuity of comprehensive diagnosis and treatment.

A lysosome-targeting and polarity-specific fluorescent probe CPM has been rationally designed for cancer diagnosis and imaging. We have successfully shown that lysosome polarity may serve as an ubiquitious marker for cancer detection. The potential of CPM for cancer diagnosis has also been demonstrated at the levels of live cells, organs, whole animal, and clinical patient tissue samples.

Cancer is a global epidemic and is considered a leading cause of death. Various cancer treatments such as chemotherapy, surgery, and radiotherapy are available for the cure but those are generally associated with poor long-term survival rates. Consequently, more advanced and selective methods that have better outcomes, fewer side effects, and high efficacies are highly in demand. Among these is the use of superparamagnetic iron oxide nanoparticles (SPIONs) which act as an innovative kit for battling cancer. Low cost, magnetic properties and toxicity properties enable SPIONs to be widely utilized in biomedical applications. For example, magnetite and maghemite (Fe3O4 and γ-Fe2O3) exhibit superparamagnetic properties and are widely used in drug delivery, diagnosis, and therapy. These materials are termed SPIONs when their size is smaller than 20 nm. This review article aims to provide a brief introduction on SPIONs, focusing on their fundamental magnetism and biological applications. The quality and surface chemistry of SPIONs are crucial in biomedical applications; therefore an in-depth survey of synthetic approaches and surface modifications of SPIONs is provided along with their biological applications such as targeting, site-specific drug delivery and therapy.

BackgroundThe relation between cardiovascular disease (CVD) present at the time of cancer diagnosis and Health-Related Quality of Life (HRQoL) assessed years after cancer diagnosis has – to our knowledge – not been studied. The objective is, therefore, to examine the relation between co-morbid CVD at cancer diagnosis and HRQoL among cancer survivors diagnosed with colorectal, thyroid, prostate, endometrium, ovarian cancer, melanoma, (non-)Hodgkin lymphoma, chronic lymphocytic leukemia (CLL), or multiple myeloma (MM) in an exploratory population-based cross-sectional study.Material and methodsAnalyses were performed on combined data sets from the PROFILES and Netherlands Cancer Registry (NCR). Data on co-morbid CVD at cancer diagnosis was extracted from the NCR. HRQoL was measured via PROFILES at a median of 4.6 years after cancer diagnosis. General Linear Model Analyses were run for the total group of cancer survivors and for each malignancy.ResultsIn total, 5930 cancer survivors (2281 colorectal, 280 thyroid, 1054 prostate, 177 endometrium, 389 ovarian cancer, 212 melanoma, 874 non-Hodgkin and 194 Hodgkin lymphoma, 242 CLL, and 227 MM survivors) were included. For the total group, survivors who had a CVD at cancer diagnosis (n = 1441, 23.4%) reported statistically significant and clinically important lower scores on global QoL and physical functioning and higher scores for dyspnea (p ConclusionIn conclusion, co-morbid CVD at cancer diagnosis was negatively related to HRQoL, especially to global QoL, physical and role functioning, and the symptoms fatigue and dyspnea.

“More than 600,000 people will die from cancer in the United States this year, and almost all of them could have been saved by detecting their cancers earlier when they were more amenable to the treatments available today,” according to Isaac Kinde ( Figure 1 ), M.D., Ph.D., head of research and innovation and a co-founder of the cancer-screening company Thrive, headquartered in Cambridge, MA [1] .

Comparison of sequencing data from a tumor sample with data from a matched germline control is a key step for accurate detection of somatic mutations. Detection sensitivity for somatic variants is greatly reduced when the matched normal sample is contaminated with tumor cells. To overcome this limitation, we developed deTiN, a method that estimates the tumor-in-normal (TiN) contamination level and, in cases affected by contamination, improves sensitivity by reclassifying initially discarded variants as somatic.

Carbon nanomaterials have been attracting attention in oncology for the development of safe and effective cancer nanomedicines in increasing improved patient compliance for generally recognized as safe (GRAS) prominence. Toxicity, safety and efficacy of carbon nanomaterials are the major concerns in cancer theranostics. Various parameters such as particle size and shape or surface morphology, surface charge, composition, oxidation and nonoxidative-stress-related mechanisms are prone to toxicity of the carbon nanomaterials. Currently, few cancer-related products have been available on the market, although some are underway in preclinical and clinical phases. Thus, our main aim is to provide comprehensive details on the carbon nanomaterials in oncology from the past two decades for patient compliance and safety.

The high-content interrogation of single cells with platforms optimized for the multiparameter characterization of cells in liquid and solid biopsy samples can enable characterization of heterogeneous populations of cells ex vivo. Doing so will advance the diagnosis, prognosis, and treatment of cancer and other diseases. However, it is important to understand the unique issues in resolving heterogeneity and variability at the single cell level before navigating the validation and regulatory requirements in order for these technologies to impact patient care. Since 2013, leading experts representing industry, academia, and government have been brought together as part of the Foundation for the National Institutes of Health (FNIH) Biomarkers Consortium to foster the potential of high-content data integration for clinical translation.

Owing to its spatiotemporal selectivity and noninvasive nature, photodynamic therapy (PDT) has become a clinically promising approach for the treatment of a wide range of cancers and other diseases. However, the full potential of PDT has not been achieved thus far as a consequence of the lack of optimal photosensitizers (PSs) and/or smart transport/activation strategies. These problems, which unfortunately lie at the core of the PDT paradigm, include the oxygen reliance limits, the effect of PDT on hypoxic tumors, limitations of light penetration, and undesired skin photosensitization induced by "always on" PSs. Recently, supramolecular approaches, which rely on the use of non-covalent interactions to construct biomedical active materials, have become suitable methods for developing innovative PSs. Non-covalent interactions enable supramolecular PSs to have sensitive and controllable photoactivities, important elements needed to maximize photodynamic effects and minimize side effects. In addition, versatile supramolecular PS-assemblies can be designed so that PDT occurs synergistically with other therapeutic modalities, e.g., photothermal therapy, leading to a potential improvement of therapeutic effectiveness. In this review, recent progress made in the development of supramolecular PSs for rejuvenating PDT will be presented. Importantly, this discussion also provides a view of future advances that will likely be made in this area and their potential clinical applications.

To date, liquid metals have been widely applied in many fields such as electronics, mechanical engineering and energy. In the last decade, with a better understanding of the physicochemical properties such as low viscosity, good fluidity, high thermal/electrical conductivity and good biocompatibility, gallium and gallium-based low-melting-point (near or below physiological temperature) alloys have attracted considerable attention in bio-related applications. This tutorial review introduces the common performances of liquid metals, highlights their featured properties, as well as summarizes various state-of-the-art bio-applications involving carriers for drug delivery, molecular imaging, cancer therapy and biomedical devices. Challenges for the clinical translation of liquid metals are also discussed.

Le rôle des lymphocytes B (LB) dans l’immuno-surveillance des tumeurs a longtemps été négligé car il a été souvent considéré comme peu efficace, voire pro-tumoral. Des études approfondies du microenvironnement immunitaire, notamment dans les cancers humains, ont permis de préciser la nature des interactions entre le LB et ses partenaires cellulaires. Cette revue examine un certain nombre de paramètres qui dictent le devenir du LB vers une fonction pro-ou anti-tumorale. Ainsi, la capacité à élaborer une immunité antitumorale qui repose sur les lymphocytes B, et/ ou des anticorps qu’ils sécrètent, fait appel à une palette très variée de mécanismes moléculaires et cellulaires dont certains pourraient représenter de nouvelles cibles thérapeutiques en oncologie.

Recently, we succeeded in the mapping of organ representation areas of different organs of the body on Thymus gland representation areas. Entire internal organ of the body was found to be represented upside-down position on the Thymus gland located on the manubrium (with the exception of upper & lower extremities) which has 2 lobules and one at each side of the manubrium. Internal organs of right side of the body is represented on the left side of the Thymus gland and the left side of the body is represented on the right side of the Thymus gland. At all the normal parts of the body, Bi-Digital O-Ring Test (BDORT) is (+) value between (+)1~(+)12. Using highly sensitive electromagnetic field (EMF) resonance phenomenon between 2 identical molecules or tissues with identical weight of BDORT, which can identify any molecules, specific cancers, viruses, bacteria, or fungi non-invasively & is the main part of BDORT (US Patent was given to BDORT in 1993). Using BDORT, any organ in the body when they are normal, it is (+) value and best (+) value is (+)12, while there is an abnormality, its value is (-) & the worst is (-)12. According to the BDORT, Thymus gland is the only exception in the body where the normal average value is (-)2 & normal value is between (-)2 & (-)5. (-)5 is the best active condition they can reach and corresponding to (+)12 of rest of the body. When any parts of the Thymus gland are (-)1.5~(+)1, (+)1 corresponds to the worst abnormal condition (-)12 of the organs in the rest of the body and we often find malignancy or some other serious medical problems. Therefore, we can use Thymus gland BDORT grading for non-invasive, quick, detection of cancer & other serious medical problems. For effective treatment, we found 6 simple methods of increasing Thymus gland function to their maximum condition of (-)5 which in turn corresponding organ in the body becomes strong, positive maximum value of up to (+)12 without using any medication with exception of taking optimal dose of Vitamin D3, when patient has significant lack of Vitamin D3.

Magnetic nanoparticles (MNPs) have been extensively studied for their potential applications to cancer diagnosis and treatment. However, various obstacles limit the use of nanoparticles for delivery in the tumor microenvironment. As a viable solution to such obstacles, advances in nanoparticle surface engineering augmented by a profound understanding of cancer physiology present new opportunities for MNP-based imaging and therapeutic agents. Stimuli-responsive ligands, rationally designed to interact with various physicochemical aspects, can improve the performance of MNPs in cancer-targeted imaging and therapy. In this review, we highlight recent progress in the design of MNP-based stimuli-responsive nanomaterials and their applications to cancer diagnosis and treatment.

The large number of manual steps involved in processing tissue creates many opportunities for specimen cross-contamination and carry-over defects, which may have serious medicolegal ramifications.1 In one study extraneous tissue was identified in 0.6% of slides, causing severe diagnostic difficulties in 0.4% of cases.1 As these events are not fully preventable, a quick, reliable, easily accessible method to resolve suspected contamination events is crucial.
