Abstract This study reports the effects of a computationally informed and avocado-seed mediated Phyto engineered CuS nanoparticles as fertilizing agent on the ionome and amino acid metabolome of Pinto bean seeds using both bench top and ion beam analytical techniques. Physico-chemical analysis of the Phyto engineered nanoparticles with scanning-electron microscopy, transmission electron microscopy, X-ray diffraction, and Fourier Transform Infrared Spectroscopy confirmed the presence of CuS nanoparticles. Molecular dynamics simulations to investigate the interaction of some active phytocompounds in avocado seeds that act as reducing agents with the nano-digenite further showed that 4-hydroxybenzoic acid had a higher affinity for interacting with the nanoparticle’s surface than other active compounds. Seeds treated with the digenite nanoparticles exhibited a unique ionome distribution pattern as determined with external beam proton-induced X-ray emission, with hotspots of Cu and S appearing in the hilum and micropyle area that indicated a possible uptake mechanism via the seed coat. The nano-digenite also triggered a plant stress response by slightly altering seed amino acid metabolism. Ultimately, the nano-digenite may have important implications as a seed protective or nutritive agent as advised by its unique distribution pattern and effect on amino acid metabolism. The application of nanotechnology in antimicrobial and cytotoxicity studies has recently been receiving increased interest. This paper report on the use of Persea americana Mill. (avocado) seed husk to synthesize hydronium jarosite nanoparticles in a facile, economical, and eco-friendly manner. We describe firstly the synthesis of hydronium jarosite nanoparticles using P. americana (avocado) seed husk aqueous extract as a reducing and chelating agent for the reduction of iron (II) sulfate heptahydrate. Secondly, we describe the characterization of the nanoproduct with scanning electron microscopy (SEM); energy dispersive X-ray spectroscopy (EDX); high-resolution transmission electron microscopy (HRTEM); X-ray powder diffraction (XRD) analysis; Fourier transform infrared spectroscopy (FT-IR); and, lastly, the cytotoxicity and antibacterial effect of hydronium jarosite nanoparticles using murine macrophage cells (Raw 264.7) cell lines, Gram-negative (Escherichia coli), Gram-positive (Staphylococcus aureus), and methicillin-resistant Staphylococcus aureus. These hydronium jarosite avocado seed husk-mediated nanoparticle-coated 2D sheets did not show any antibacterial activity against the bacteria tested but did show concentration-dependent cytotoxicity. Further research is required to optimize the antibacterial properties and reduce the cytotoxicity of this nanomaterial synthesized using green nanochemistry.

Cu(II) and Zn(II) morpholinyldithiocarbamato complexes, formulated as [Cu(MphDTC)2] and [Zn(μ-MphDTC)2(MphDTC)2], where MphDTC is morpholinyldithiocarbamate were synthesized and characterized by elemental analysis, spectroscopic techniques and single-crystal X-ray crystallography. The molecular structure of the Cu(II) complex revealed a mononuclear compound in which the Cu(II) ion was bonded to two morpholinyl dithiocarbamate ligands to form a four-coordinate distorted square planar geometry. The molecular structure of the Zn(II) complex was revealed to be dinuclear, and each metal ion was bonded to two morpholinyl dithiocarbamate bidentate anions, one acting as chelating ligand, the other as a bridge between the two Zn(II) ions. The anticancer activity of the morpholinyldithiocarbamate ligand, Cu(II) and Zn(II) complexes were evaluated against renal (TK10), melanoma (UACC62) and breast (MCF7) cancer cells by a Sulforhodamine B (SRB) assay. Morpholinyldithiocarbamate was more active than the standard drug parthenolide against renal and breast cancer cell lines, and [Zn(μ-MphDTC)2(MphDTC)2] was the most active complex against breast cancer. The copper(II) complex had a comparable activity with the standard against renal and breast cancer cell lines but showed an enhanced potency against melanoma when compared to parthenolide.

We report the synthesis and structural studies of copper sulfide nanocrystals from copper(II) dithiocarbamate single molecule precursors. The optical studies of the as-prepared copper sulfide nanoparticles were carried out using UV–Visible and photoluminescence spectroscopy. The absorption spectra show absorption band edges at 287 nm and exhibit considerable blue shift that could be ascribed to the quantum confinement effects as a result of the small crystallite sizes of the nanoparticles and the photoluminescence spectra show emission curves that are red shifted with respect to the absorption band edges. The structural studies were carried out using powder X-ray diffraction, transmission electron microscopy, scanning electron microscopy, energy dispersive X-ray spectroscopy and atomic force microscopy. The XRD patterns revealed the formation of hexagonal structure of covellite CuS with estimated crystallite sizes of 17.3–18.6 nm. The TEM images showed particles with almost spherical or rod shapes with average crystallite sizes of 3–9.8 nm. SEM images showed morphology with ball-like microsphere on the surfaces and EDS spectra confirmed the presence of CuS nanoparticles. Dye-sensitised solar cells (DSSCs) are 3rd generation photovoltaic device that imitate photosynthesis in plants. The fundamental concept of a DSSCs is that the photoanode is covered by the dye as a sensitiser. Natural dyes from plant-based extracts have gained attention as alternatives to toxic and expensive commercial dye sensitisers. Various studies have been conducted on the use of natural plant dye extracts for DSSCs . However, more fundamental studies on their adsorption on TiO _2 photoanode nanoparticles are still not well understood. In this study, we investigated the crystal structure, optical absorption, and photoluminescence properties of TiO _2 , Cucurbita maxima, and Cucurbita maxima dyes adsorbed on TiO _2 nanoparticles as potential materials for DSSCs. Raman spectra confirmed the anatase phase of the TiO _2 nanoparticles. The particle size of 12 ± 2 nm was confirmed through the transmission electron microscope. The optical absorption properties of Cucurbita maxima show two distinct absorption bands: blue visible (450–500 nm) and red visible (635–674 nm). The photoluminescence spectra of the dye extract and its adsorption onto the TiO _2 nanoparticles showed two prominent peaks in the blue and red regions of the electromagnetic spectrum. No significant peak is observed in the green region of the electromagnetic spectrum. These studies shed more light on the fundamental properties of chlorophyll adsorption on TiO _2 nanoparticles and their optical and photoluminescence properties for applications as sensitisers in DSSCs.
