The time evolution of the dependence of the mass accretion rate with the stellar mass and the disk mass represents a fundamental way to understand the evolution of protoplanetary disks and the formation of planets. In this work, we present observations with X-shooter of 26 Class II very low-mass stars (< 0.2 M⊙) and brown dwarfs in the Ophiuchus, Chamaeleon-I, and Upper Scorpius star-forming regions. These new observations extend the measurement of the mass accretion rate down to spectral type (SpT) M9 (∼0.02 M⊙) in Ophiuchus and Chamaeleon-I and add 11 very-low-mass stars to the sample of objects previously studied with broadband spectroscopy in Upper Scorpius. We obtained the spectral type and extinction, as well as the physical parameters of the sources. We used the intensity of various emission lines in the spectra of these sources to derive the accretion luminosity and mass accretion rates for the entire sample. Combining these new observations with data from the literature, we compare relations between accretion and stellar and disk properties of four different star-forming regions with different ages: Ophiuchus (∼1 Myr), Lupus (∼2 Myr), Chamaeleon-I (∼3 Myr), and Upper Scorpius (5−12 Myr). We find the slopes of the accretion relationships (L* − Lacc, M∗ − Ṁacc) to steepen in the 1−3 Myr age range (i.e., between Ophiuchus, Lupus, and Chamaeleon-I) and that both relationships may be better described with a single power law. We find that previous claims for a double power-law behavior of the M∗ − Ṁacc relationship may have been triggered by the use of a different SpT–Teff scale. We also find the relationship between the protoplanetary disk mass and the mass accretion rate of the stellar population to steepen with time down to the age of Upper Scorpius. Overall, we observe hints of a faster evolution into low accretion rates of low-mass stars and brown dwarfs. At the same time, we also find that brown dwarfs present higher Mdisk/Ṁacc ratios (i.e., longer accretion depletion timescales) than stars in Ophiuchus, Lupus, and Cha-I. This apparently contradictory result may imply that the evolution of protoplanetary disks around brown dwarfs may be different than what is seen in the stellar regime. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

Context. The dominant formation channel of brown dwarfs (BDs) is not well constrained yet and a promising way to discriminate between scenarios is to test the environment-dependent efficiency in forming BDs. So far, the outcome of star formation, studied through the initial mass function, has been found to be very similar in all clusters that have been inspected. Aims. We aim to characterize the low-mass (sub)stellar population of the central portion (2.4 pc2) of the ∼2 Myr old cluster NGC 2244 using near-infrared spectroscopy. By studying this cluster, characterized by a low stellar density and numerous OB stars, we aim to explore the effect that OB stars may have on the production of BDs. Methods. We obtained near-infrared HK spectroscopy of 85 faint candidate members of NGC 2244. We derived the spectral type and extinction by comparison with spectral templates. We evaluated cluster membership using three gravity-sensitive spectral indices based on the shape of the H-band. Furthermore, we evaluated the infrared excess from Spitzer of all the candidate members of the cluster. Finally, we estimated the mass of all the candidate members of the cluster and derived the initial mass function, star-to-BD number ratio, and disk fraction. Results. The initial mass function is well represented by a power law (dN/dM ∝ M−α) below 0.4 M⊙, with a slope α = 0.7–1.1 depending on the fitted mass range. We calculated a star-to-BD number ratio of 2.2–2.8. We find the low-mass population of NGC 2244 to be consistent with nearby star-forming regions, although it is at the high end of BD production. We find BDs in NGC 2244 to be, on average, closer to OB stars than to low-mass stars, which could potentially be the first piece of evidence that OB stars affect the formation of BDs. We find a disk fraction of all the members with a spectral type later than K0 of 39 ± 9% which is lower than typical values found in nearby star-forming regions of similar ages. The last decade of direct imaging (DI) searches for sub-stellar companions has uncovered a widely diverse sample that challenges the current formation models, while highlighting the intrinsically low occurrence rate of wide companions, especially at the lower end of the mass distribution. These results clearly show how blind surveys, crucial to constrain the underlying planet and sub-stellar companion population, are not an efficient way to increase the sample of DI companions. It is therefore becoming clear that efficient target selection methods are essential to ensure a larger number of detections. We present the results of the COPAINS Survey conducted with SPHERE/VLT, searching for sub-stellar companions to stars showing significant proper motion differences (Δμ) between different astrometric catalogues. We observed 25 stars and detected ten companions, including four new BDs: HIP 21152 B, HIP 29724 B, HD 60584 B, and HIP 63734 B. Our results clearly demonstrate how astrometric signatures, in the past only giving access to stellar companions, can now thanks to Gaia reveal companions well in the sub-stellar regime. We also introduce FORECAST (Finely Optimised REtrieval of Companions of Accelerating STars), a tool which allows to check the agreement between position and mass of the detected companions with the measured Δμ. Given the agreement between the values of the masses of the new sub-stellar companions from the photometry with the model-independent ones obtained with FORECAST, the results of COPAINS represent a significant increase in the number of potential benchmarks for BD and planet formation and evolution theories. Context. Studies of the low-mass population statistics in young clusters are the foundation for our understanding of the formation of low-mass stars and brown dwarfs. Robust low-mass populations can be obtained through near-infrared spectroscopy, which provides confirmation of the cool and young nature of member candidates. However, the spectroscopic analysis of these objects is often not performed in a uniform manner, and the assessment of youth generally relies on the visual inspection of youth features whose behavior is not well understood. Aims. We aim at building a method that efficiently identifies young low-mass stars and brown dwarfs from low-resolution near-infrared spectra, by studying gravity-sensitive features and their evolution with age. Methods. We have built a data set composed of all publicly available (∼2800) near-infrared spectra of dwarfs with spectral types between M0 and L3. First, we investigate methods for the derivation of the spectral type and extinction via comparison to spectral templates and various spectral indices. Then, we examine gravity-sensitive spectral indices and apply machine learning methods in order to efficiently separate young (≲10 Myr) objects from the field. Results. Using a set of six spectral indices for spectral typing, including two newly defined ones (TLI-J and TLI-K), we are able to achieve a precision below one spectral subtype across the entire spectral type range. We define a new gravity-sensitive spectral index (TLI-g) that consistently separates young objects from field objects; it shows a performance superior to other indices from the literature. Even better separation between the two classes can be achieved through machine learning methods that use the entire near-infrared spectra as an input. Moreover, we show that the H and K bands alone are sufficient for this purpose. Finally, we evaluate the relative importance of different spectral regions for gravity classification as returned by the machine learning models. We find that the H-band broadband shape is the most relevant feature, followed by the FeH absorption bands at 1.2 μm and 1.24 μm and the KI doublet at 1.24 μm. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

We present the discovery of a white dwarf companion at ∼3.6 arcsec from GJ 3346, a nearby (π ∼ 42 mas) K star observed with SPHERE@VLT as part of an open time survey for faint companions to objects with significant proper motion discrepancies (Δμ) between Gaia DR1 and Tycho-2. Syrius-like systems like GJ 3346 AB, which include a main-sequence star and a white dwarf, can be difficult to detect because of the intrinsic faintness of the latter. They have, however, been found to be common contaminants for direct imaging (DI) searches. White dwarfs have in fact similar brightness to substellar companions in the infrared, while being much brighter in the visible bands like those used by Gaia. Combining our observations with Gaia DR2 and with several additional archival data sets, we were able to fully constrain the physical properties of GJ 3346 B, such as its effective temperature (11 × 103 ± 500 K) as well as the cooling age of the system (648 ± 58 Myr). This allowed us to better understand the system history and to partially explain the discrepancies previously noted in the age indicators for this object. Although further investigation is still needed, it seems that GJ 3346, which was previously classified as young, is in fact most likely to be older than 4 Gyr. Finally, given that the mass (0.58 ± 0.01 M⊙) and separation (85 au) of GJ 3346 B are compatible with the observed Δμ, this discovery represents a further confirmation of the potential of this kind of dynamical signatures as selection methods for DI surveys targeting faint, substellar companions. We present COPAINS (Code for Orbital Parametrization of Astrometrically Inferred New Systems), an innovative tool developed to identify previously undiscovered companions detectable via direct imaging, based on changes in stellar proper motions across multiple astrometric catalogues. This powerful procedure allows for dynamical predictions of the possible masses and separations of unseen companions compatible with observed astrometric trends, marginalized over unknown orbital elements. Validating our approach using well-constrained systems, we found that our tool provides a good indication of the region of the parameter space where undetected secondaries may be located. Comparing the output of the code to the measured or expected sensitivity from various imaging instruments, this in turn enables us to robustly select the most promising targets for direct imaging campaigns searching for low-mass companions. Such an informed selection method promises to reduce the null detection rates from current programmes and will significantly increase the current census of wide brown dwarfs and planetary companions to stars, which remain extremely rare in the surveys conducted so far. Stellar multiplicity is believed to influence planetary formation and evolution, although the precise nature and extent of this role remain ambiguous. We present a study aimed at testing the role of stellar multiplicity in the formation and/or evolution of the most massive, close-in planetary and substellar companions. Using past and new direct imaging observations, as well as the Gaia DR2 catalogue, we searched for wide binary companions to 38 stars hosting massive giant planets or brown dwarfs (M > 7 M Jup) on orbits shorter than ∼1 au. We report the discovery of a new component in the WASP-14 system, and present an independent confirmation of a comoving companion to WASP-18. From a robust Bayesian statistical analysis, we derived a binary fraction of |$79.0^{+13.2}_{-14.7}$|  per cent between 20 and 10 000 au for our sample, twice as high as for field stars with a 3σ significance. This binary frequency was found to be larger than for lower-mass planets on similar orbits, and we observed a marginally higher binary rate for inner companions with periods shorter than 10 d. These results demonstrate that stellar companions greatly influence the formation and/or evolution of these systems, suggesting that the role played by binary companions becomes more important for higher-mass planets, and that this trend may be enhanced for systems with tighter orbits. Our analysis also revealed a peak in binary separation at 250 au, highlighting a shortfall of close binaries among our sample. This indicates that the mechanisms affecting planet and brown dwarf formation or evolution in binaries must operate from wide separations, although we found that the Kozai–Lidov mechanism is unlikely to be the dominant underlying process. We conclude that binarity plays a crucial role in the existence of very massive short-period giant planets and brown dwarf desert inhabitants, which are almost exclusively observed in multiple systems. We present Atacama Large Millimeter/sub-millimeter Array Cycle-2 observations of the HBC 494 molecular outflow and envelope. HBC 494 is an FU Ori-like object embedded in the Orion A cloud and is associated with the reflection nebulae Re50 and Re50N. We use 12CO, 13CO and C18O spectral line data to independently describe the outflow and envelope structures associated with HBC 494. The moment-1 map of the 12CO emission shows the widest outflow cavities in a Class I object known to date (opening angle ~150°). The morphology of the wide outflow is likely to be due to the interaction between winds originating in the inner disc and the surrounding envelope. The low-velocity blueshifted and redshifted 13CO and C18O emission trace the rotation and infall motion of the circumstellar envelope. Using molecular line data and adopting standard methods for correcting optical depth effects, we estimate its kinematic properties, including an outflow mass of the order of 10-1 M☉. Considering the large estimated outflow mass for HBC 494, our results support recent theoretical work suggesting that wind-driven processes might dominate the evolution of protoplanetary discs via energetic outflows. Motivated by the observations of several infrared-excess bow-shock sources and proplyd-like objects near the Galactic Centre, we analyse the effect of a potential outflow from the centre on bow-shock properties. We show that due to the non-negligible isotropic central outflow the bow-shock evolution along the orbit becomes asymmetric between the pre-peribothron and post-peribothron phases. This is demonstrated by the calculation of the bow-shock size evolution, the velocity along the shocked layer, the surface density of the bow shock, and by emission-measure maps close to the peribothron passage. Within the ambient velocity range of ≲2000 km s-1 the asymmetry is profound and the changes are considerable for different outflow velocities. As a case study we perform model calculations for the Dusty S-cluster Object (DSO/G2) as a potential young stellar object that is currently being monitored and has passed the pericentre at~2000 Schwarzschild radii from the supermassive black hole (Sgr A*) in 2014. We show that the velocity field of the shocked layer can contribute to the observed increasing line width of the DSO source up to the peribothron. Subsequently, supposing that the line emission originates in the bowshock, a decrease of the line width is expected. Furthermore, the decline of the bow-shock emission measure in the post-peribothron phase could help to reveal the emission of the putative star. The dominant contribution of circumstellar matter (either inflow or outflow) is consistent with the observed stable luminosity and compactness of the DSO/G2 source during its pericentre passage. The census of the solar neighbourhood is almost complete for stars and becoming more complete in the brown dwarf regime. Spectroscopic, photometric and kinematic characterization of nearby objects helps us to understand the local mass function, the binary fraction, and provides new targets for sensitive planet searches. We aim to derive spectral types and spectrophotometric distances of a sample of new high proper motion sources found with the WISE (Wide-field Infrared Survey Explorer) satellite, and obtain parallaxes for those objects that fall within the area observed by the Vista Variables in the Vía Láctea survey (VVV). We used low-resolution spectroscopy and template fitting to derive spectral types, multiwavelength photometry to characterize the companion candidates and obtain photometric distances. Multi-epoch imaging from the VVV survey was used to measure the parallaxes and proper motions for three sources. We confirm a new T2 brown dwarf within ~15 pc. We derived optical spectral types for 24 sources, mostly M dwarfs within 50 pc. We addressed the wide binary nature of 16 objects found by the WISE mission and previously known high proper motion sources. Six of these are probably members of wide binaries, two of those are new, and present evidence against the physical binary nature of two candidate binary stars found in the literature, and eight that we selected as possible binary systems. Context. T and Y dwarfs are among the coolest and least luminous objects detected, and they can help to understand the properties of giant planets. Up to now, there are more than 350 T dwarfs that have been identified thanks to large imaging surveys in the infrared, and their multiplicity properties can shed light on the formation process. Aims. The aim of this work is to look for companions around a sample of seven ultracoool objects. Most of them have been discovered by the WISE observatory and have not been studied before for multiplicity. Methods. We observed a sample six T dwarfs and one L9 dwarf with the Laser Guide Star (LGS) and NAOS-CONICA, the adaptive optics (AO) facility, and the near infrared camera at the ESO Very Large Telescope. We observed all the objects in one or more near-IR filters (JHKs). Results. From the seven observed objects, we have identified a subarcsecond binary system, WISE J0612-3036, composed of two similar components with spectral types of T6. We measure a separation of ρ = 350 ± 5mas and a position angle of PA = 235 ± 1?. Using the mean absolute magnitudes of T6 dwarfs in the 2MASS JHKs bands, we estimate a distance of d = 31 ± 6 pc and derive a projected separation of ρ ~ 11 ± 2 au. Another target, WISE J2255-3118, shows a very faint object at 1".3 in the Ks image. The object is marginally detected in H, and we derive a near infrared color of H - Ks > 0.1mag. HST/WFC3 public archival data reveals that the companion candidate is an extended source. Together with the derived color, this suggests that the source is most probably a background galaxy. The five other sources are apparently single, with 3-σ sensitivity limits between H = 19-21 for companions at separations ≥0."5. Conclusions. WISE 0612-3036 is probably a new T-dwarf binary composed of two T6 dwarfs. As in the case of other late T-dwarf binaries, it shows a mass ratio close to 1, although its projected separation, ~11 au, is larger than the average (~5 au). Context. The severe crowding towards the Galactic plane suggests that the census of nearby stars in that direction may be incomplete. Recently, Scholz reported a new M9 object at an estimated distance d ≃ 7 pc (WISE J072003.20-084651.2; hereafter WISE?J0720) at Galactic latitude b = 2.3°. Aims. Our goals are to determine the physical characteristics of WISE?J0720, its kinematic properties, and to address the question of whether it is a binary object, as was suggested in the discovery paper. Methods. Optical and infrared spectroscopy from the Southern African Large Telescope and Magellan, respectively, and spectral energy distribution fitting were used to determine the spectral type of WISE J0720. The measured radial velocity, proper motion, and parallax yielded its Galactic velocities. We also investigated if WISE J0720 may show X-ray activity based on archival data. Results. Our spectra are consistent with spectral type L0±1. We find no evidence for binarity, apart from a minor 2s level difference in the radial velocities taken at two different epochs. The spatial velocity of WISE J0720 does not connect it to any known moving group; instead, it places the object with high probability in the old thin disk or in the thick disk. The spectral energy distribution fit hints at excess in the 12 μm and 22 μm WISE bands which may be due to a redder companion, but the same excess is visible in other late-type objects, and it more likely implies a shortcoming of the models (e.g., problems with the effective wavelengths of the filters for these extremely cool objects, etc.) rather than a disk or redder companion. The optical spectrum shows some Ha emission, indicative of stellar activity. Archival X-ray observations yield no detection. Conclusions. It is often assumed that the strong gravitational field of a super-massive black hole disrupts an adjacent molecular cloud preventing classical star formation in the deep potential well of the black hole. Yet, young stars have been observed across the entire nuclear star cluster of the Milky Way including the region close (<0.5 pc) to the central black hole, Sgr A*. Here, we focus particularly on small groups of young stars, such as IRS 13N located 0.1 pc away from Sgr A*, which is suggested to contain about five embedded massive young stellar objects (<1 Myr). We perform three-dimensional hydrodynamical simulations to follow the evolution of molecular clumps orbiting about a 4 × 106 M⊙ black hole, to constrain the formation and the physical conditions of such groups. The molecular clumps in our models are assumed to be isothermal containing 100 M⊙ in <0.2 pc radius. Such molecular clumps exist in the circumnuclear disc of the Galaxy. In our highly eccentrically orbiting clump, the strong orbital compression of the clump along the orbital radius vector and perpendicular to the orbital plane causes the gas densities to increase to values higher than the tidal density of Sgr A*, which are required for star formation. Additionally, we speculate that the infrared excess source G2/DSO approaching Sgr A* on a highly eccentric orbit could be associated with a dust-enshrouded star that may have been formed recently through the mechanism supported by our models. Using FORS2 on the Very Large Telescope, we have astrometrically monitored over a period of two months the two components of the brown dwarf system WISE J104915.57-531906.1, the closest one to the Sun. Our astrometric measurements - with a relative precision at the milli-arcsecond scale - allowed us to detect the orbital motion and derive more precisely the parallax of the system, leading to a distance of 2:020 ± 0:019 pc. The relative orbital motion of the two objects is found to be perturbed, which leads us to suspect the presence of a substellar companion around one of the two components. We also performed VRIz photometry of the two components and compared this with models. We confirm the flux reversal of the T dwarf. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

A fast moving infrared excess source (G2) which is widely interpreted as a core-less gas and dust cloud approaches Sagittarius A* (Sgr A*) on a presumably elliptical orbit. VLT Ks-band and Keck K′-band data result in clear continuum identifications and proper motions of this ∼19m Dusty S-cluster Object (DSO). In 2002-2007 it is confused with the star S63, but free of confusion again since 2007. Its near-infrared (NIR) colors and a comparison to other sources in the field speak in favor of the DSO being an IR excess star with photospheric continuum emission at 2 microns than a core-less gas and dust cloud. We also find very compact L′-band emission (<0.1″) contrasted by the reported extended (0.03″ up to ∼0.2″ for the tail) Brγ emission. The presence of a star will change the expected accretion phenomena, since a stellar Roche lobe may retain a fraction of the material during and after the peri-bothron passage. Context. IRS 8 offers the possibility to study unique bow shock properties and polarization features in the dusty environment at the Galactic center. Aims. We aim to gain insight into the properties of the surrounding material of the bow shock source IRS 8, based on the measured polarization distribution along its extended feature. Bow shock models enable a relative positioning of its central star with respect to the northern arm and Sagittarius A". Methods. The analysis is based on polarimetric KS-band and nonpolarimetric L'- and N-band data obtained with the adaptive-optics assisted instrument NAOS/CONICA (KS- and L'-band) and the mid-infrared imager/spectrograph VISIR (N-band) at the ESO Very Large Telescope. A polarization map covering an area of ∼31.9"× 8:2" at the position of IRS 8 was obtained using high-precision photometric methods, together with a polarimetric calibration specified for NACO. In addition, simulated L'-band bow shock models are presented, which allow a positioning of IRS 8 with respect to the interaction medium of the northern arm. Results. This work presents interstellar dust properties for the northern arm in the vicinity of a bow shock, as well as a threedimensional positioning of IRS 8 with respect to the northern arm and Sagittarius A". The presented polarization maps for the Galactic center source IRS 8 show a total intrinsic polarization degree of 3.3% at 13° east of north, measured on nondeconvolved images, and 4.3% at 19° on Lucy-Richardson deconvolved images. Analysis of the polarization distribution along the bow shock reveals a polarization pattern as it would be produced by absorption on aligned grains and shows a decreasing polarization degree towards the apex of the bow shock. Current literature provides a mean electron density for IRS 8. The comparison of this value with properties of simulated polarization maps in a circumstellar environment, which are capable of multiple scattering, leads to the conclusion that multiple scattering events reduce the degree of polarization at the apex of the bow shock. Additionally, bow shock models that allow relative positioning of IRS 8 with respect to the northern arm and Sagittarius A" are presented. Context. There are a number of faint compact infrared excess sources in the central stellar cluster of the Milky Way. Their nature and origin is unclear. In addition to several isolated objects of this kind there is a small but dense cluster of comoving sources (IRS13N) located ∼3" west of SgrA" just 0.5" north of the bright IRS13E cluster of Wolf-Rayet and O-type stars. Based on the analysis of their color and brightness, there are two main possibilities: (1) they may be dust-embedded stars older than a few Myr; or (2) very young, dusty stars with ages younger than 1 Myr. Aims. We present a first Ks-band identification and proper motions of the IRS13N members, the high-velocity dusty S-cluster object (DSO, also referred to as G2), and other infrared excess sources in the central field. Goal is to constrain the nature of these source. Methods. The L'- (3.8 μm) Ks- (2.2 μm) and H-band (1.65 μm) observations were carried out using the NACO adaptive optics system at the ESO VLT. Proper motions were obtained by linear fitting of the stellar positions extracted by StarFinder as a function of time, weighted by positional uncertainties, and by Gaussian fitting from high-pass filtered and deconvolved images. We also present results of near-infrared (NIR) H- and Ks-band ESO-SINFONI integral field spectroscopy of the Galactic center cluster ISR13N. Results. We show that within the uncertainties, the positions and proper motions of the IRS13N sources in Ks- and L'-band are identical. The HK-sL' colors then indicate that the bright L'-band IRS13N sources are indeed dust-enshrouded stars rather than core-less dust clouds. The proper motions also show that the IRS13N sources are not strongly gravitationally bound to each other. Combined with their NIR colors, this implies that they have been formed recently. For the DSO we obtain proper motions and a Ks-L'-color. Conclusions. Most of the compact L'-band excess emission sources have a compact H- or Ks-band counterpart and therefore are likely stars with dust shells or disks. Our new results and orbital analysis from our previous work favor the hypothesis that the infrared excess IRS13N members and other dusty sources close to SgrA" are young dusty stars and that star formation at the Galactic center (GC) is a continuously ongoing process. Context. The mini-spiral is a feature of the interstellar medium in the central ∼2 pc of the Galactic center. It is composed of several streamers of dust and ionised and atomic gas with temperatures between a few 100K to 104 K. There is evidence that these streamers are related to the so-called circumnuclear disk of molecular gas and are ionized by photons from massive, hot stars in the central parsec. Aims. We attempt to constrain the emission mechanisms and physical properties of the ionized gas and dust of the mini-spiral region with the help of our multiwavelength data sets. Methods. Our observations were carried out at 1.3mm and 3mm with the mm interferometric array CARMA in California in March and April 2009, with the MIR instrument VISIR at ESO's VLT in June 2006, and the NIR Brγ with VLT NACO in August 2009. Results. We present high resolution maps of the mini-spiral, and obtain a spectral index of 0.5 ± 0.25 for Sgr A", indicating an inverted synchrotron spectrum. We find electron densities within the range 0.8-1.5 × 104 cm-3 for the mini-spiral from the radio continuum maps, along with a dust mass contribution of ∼0.25 M☉ from the MIR dust continuum, and extinctions ranging from 1.8-3 at 2.16 μm in the Brγ line. Conclusions. We observe a mixture of negative and positive spectral indices in our 1.3mm and 3mm observations of the extended emission of the mini-spiral, which we interpret as evidence that there are a range of contributions to the thermal free-free emission by the ionized gas emission and by dust at 1.3 mm. Context. We report on new simultaneous observations and modeling of the millimeter, near-infrared, and X-ray flare emission of the source Sagittarius A" (SgrA") associated with the super-massive (4 × 106 M☉) black hole at the Galactic center. Aims. We study the applicability of the adiabatic synchrotron source expansion model and study physical processes giving rise to the variable emission of SgrA" from the radio to the X-ray domain. Methods. Our observations were carried out on 18 May 2009 using the NACO adaptive optics (AO) instrument at the European Southern Observatory's Very Large Telescope, the ACIS-I instrument aboard the Chandra X-ray Observatory, the LABOCA bolometer at the Atacama Pathfinder EXperiment (APEX), and the CARMA mm telescope array at Cedar Flat, California. Results. The X-ray flare had an excess 2-8 keV luminosity between 6 and 12×1033 erg s-1. The observations reveal flaring activity in all wavelength bands that can be modeled as the signal from an adiabatically expanding synchrotron self-Compton (SSC) component. Modeling of the light curves shows that the sub-mm follows the NIR emission with a delay of about three-quarters of an hour with an expansion velocity of about vexp ∼ 0.009c. We find source component sizes of around one Schwarzschild radius, flux densities of a few Janskys, and spectral indices α of about +1 (S (v) ∝ v-α). At the start of the flare, the spectra of the two main components peak just short of 1 THz. To statistically explain the observed variability of the (sub-)mm spectrum of SgrA", we use a sample of simultaneous NIR/X-ray flare peaks and model the flares using a synchrotron and SSC mechanism. Conclusions. These parameters suggest that either the adiabatically expanding source components have a bulk motion larger than vexp or the expanding material contributes to a corona or disk, confined to the immediate surroundings of SgrA". For the bulk of the synchrotron and SSC models, we find synchrotron turnover frequencies in the range of 300-400 GHz. For the pure synchrotron models, this results in densities of relativistic particles of the order of 106.5 cm-3 and for the SSC models, the median densities are about one order of magnitude higher. However, to obtain a realistic description of the frequency-dependent variability amplitude of SgrA", models with higher turnover frequencies and even higher densities are required. ABSTRACT Several massive black holes exhibit flux variability on time-scales that correspond to source sizes of the order of few Schwarzschild radii. We survey the potential of near-infrared and X-ray polarimetry to constrain physical properties of such black hole systems, namely, their spin and inclination. We have focused on a model where an orbiting hotspot is embedded in an accretion disc. A new method of searching for the time-lag between orthogonal polarization channels is developed and applied to an ensemble of hotspot models that samples a wide range of parameter space. We found that the hotspot model predicts signatures in polarized light which are in the range to be measured directly in the near future. However, our estimations are predicted upon the assumption of a Keplerian velocity distribution inside the flow where the dominant part of the magnetic field is toroidal. We also found that if the right model of the accretion flow can be chosen for each source (e.g. on the basis of magnetohydrodynamic simulations), then the black hole spin and inclination can be constrained to a small two-dimensional area in the spin-inclination space. The results of the application of the method to the available near-infrared polarimetric data of Sagittarius A* (Sgr A*) are presented. It is shown that even with the currently available data, the spin and inclination of Sgr A* can be constrained. We present a mid-infrared 3D view of the central parsec using ISAAC spectrograph (ESO/VLT) with its spectroscopic mode. We mapped the central parsec in L- and M-bands by using 27 and 21 slit positions, respectively, that allowed us to build two data cubes of the region in these spectral domains. We also use an original method to distinguish the contribution of the foreground extinction to the absorbed spectra from that of the local extinction in both wavelength ranges. We find that there are residual water and CO ices in the central parsec as well as hydrocarbons and gaseous CO implying very low temperatures of the order of tens of Kelvin in the local environment of Sgr A*. We aim at modeling small groups of young stars such as IRS 13N, 0.1 pc away from Sgr A*, which is suggested to contain a few embedded massive young stellar objects. We perform hydrodynamical simulations to follow the evolution of molecular clumps orbiting around a 4 × 106 M⊙ black hole, to constrain the formation and the physical conditions of such groups.We find that the strong compression due to the black hole along the orbital radius vector of clumps evolving on highly eccentric orbits causes the clumps densities to increase to higher than the tidal density of Sgr A* and required for star formation. This suggests that the tidal compression from the black hole could support star formation.Additionally, we speculate that the infrared excess source G2/DSO approaching Sgr A* on a highly eccentric orbit could be associated with a dust enshrouded star that may have been formed recently through the mechanism supported by our models. The compact radio and near-infrared (NIR) source Sagittarius A* has been observed in the context of two NIR triggered global VLT and VLBA campaigns at 43 GHz (7 mm) on May 16-18 2012 and October 4 2014. While on October 4 2014 Sgr A* remained in a quiescent state, a NIR flare on May 17 2012 is accompanied by an increase in flux density of 0.22 Jy at 7 mm delayed by 4.5±0.5 h. Additionally, Sgr A* seems to develop a weak secondary radio off-core component of 0.02 Jy at a position angle of 140° and an angular distance of 1.5 mas shortly before the peak of the flare. We present the proper motion study of the thin filaments observed in L'-band (3.8 μm) adaptive optics images of the central parsec of the Milky Way. Observed filaments are associated with the mini-spiral and, in some cases, with stars.
