The article discusses the risks, pathology, impact and treatments for urinary and faecal incontinence after childbirth, as well as tips to help nurses in explaining them to patients. Urinary incontinence can be caused by stress, urge or mixed incontinence, while faecal incontinence may be the result of anal sphincter trauma associated with forceps delivery. Healthcare professionals are advised to perform endoanal ultrasound or a magnetic resonance imaging assessment when the patient's obstetric history is highly suggestive of anal sphincter trauma.
