237Np absolute delayed neutron yields have been measured at different incident neutron energies from 1.5 to 16 MeV. The experiment was performed at the Physikalisch-Technische Bundesanstalt (PTB) facility where the Van de Graaff accelerator and the cyclotron CV28 delivered 9 different neutron energy beams using p+T, d+D and d+T reactions. The detection system is made up of twelve 3He tubes inserted into a polyethylene cylinder. In this paper, the experimental setup and the data analysis method are described. The evolution of the absolute DN yields as a function of the neutron incident beam energies are presented and compared to experimental data found in the literature and data from the libraries.

N/Z effects were observed on variables measured in central Xe on Sn collisions around the Fermi energy. Comparisons were made with dynamical simulations of collisions in which the symmetry term of the EOS was varied. In this framework it appeared that the observed effects were due to the dynamics of the reaction and not to the deexcitation of the hot primary fragments.

The compact neutron spectrometer used at the ASDEX Upgrade tokamak is characterised to obtain its response matrix. This paper describes the characterisation procedure and the derived response matrix, based on a campaign at the PTB ion accelerator facility (PIAF) and on the subsequent time-of-flight (TOF) analysis of neutrons from a field with a broad energy distribution. The response of mono-energetic neutrons generated at the PIAF is used as reference for the TOF analysis. The detector's response functions for spectrum deconvolution are obtained by Gaussian broadening of the simulated responses to fit the experimental ones, using a maximum-entropy ansatz. In this way, the response functions are smooth enough to ensure a reliable unfolding of pulse height spectra into neutron emission spectra, which provide information on the fast ion velocity distribution in neutral beam heated tokamak plasmas. Topoisomerase 1 (Top1), a nuclear enzyme involved in DNA relaxation, is the target of several anticancer drugs. TOP1 mutations occur in camptothecin-resistant tumour cell lines. We explored, in the NCI panel of 60 human tumour cell lines, whether polymorphic variations in the TOP1 gene could explain differences in drug sensitivity. The 21 exons of the gene were fully studied as well as five intronic domains that had previously been shown to harbour single nucleotide polymorphisms (SNPs) or mutations. PCR products covering the whole exonic sequences or the relevant intronic domains were subjected to denaturing high-performance liquid chromatography. Nucleotide variations were then determined by sequencing. Discrimination between intronic common and variant homozygous samples was performed using a restriction fragment length polymorphism technique. Only one exonic mutation was detected, at the heterozygous state; it occurs in exon 19 of a colon cancer cell line (HCT-15) and consists of a G>A transition at position 75, resulting in a Met675Ile change. The intronic sequences studied harboured the SNPs expected with allelic frequencies between 20 and 40%. Three major haplotypes, generating 92% of the 10 genotypes encountered, were defined as containing none of the intronic SNPs, or three of them, or all of them. No significant relationship was evidenced between Top1 expression and the TOP1 polymorphisms studied. Abstract Background The ability of nanoparticles to cross the lung-blood barrier suggests that they may translocate to blood and to targets distant from their portal of entry. Nevertheless, nanotoxicity in organs has received little attention. The purpose of this study was to evaluate nanotoxicity in renal cells using in vitro models. Various carbon black (CB) (FW2–13 nm, Printex60-21 nm and LB101-95 nm) and titanium dioxide (TiO2-15 and TiO2-50 nm) nanoparticles were characterized on size by electron microscopy. We evaluated theirs effects on glomerular mesangial (IP15) and epithelial proximal tubular (LLC-PK1) renal cells, using light microscopy, WST-1 assay, immunofluorescence labeling and DCFH-DA for reactive oxygen species (ROS) assay. Results Nanoparticles induced a variety of cell responses. On both IP15 and LLC-PK1 cells, the smallest FW2 NP was found to be the most cytotoxic with classic dose-behavior. For the other NPs tested, different cytotoxic profiles were found, with LLC-PK1 cells being more sensitive than IP15 cells. Exposure to FW2 NPs, evidenced in our experiments as the most cytotoxic particle type, significantly enhanced production of ROS in both IP15 and LLC-PK1 cells. Immunofluorescence microscopy using latex beads indicated that depending on their size, the cells internalized particles, which accumulated in the cell cytoplasm. Additionally using transmission electronic microscope micrographs show nanoparticles inside the cells and trapped in vesicles. Conclusion The present data constitute the first step towards determining in vitro dose effect of manufactured CB and TiO2 NPs in renal cells. Cytotoxicological assays using epithelial tubular and glomerular mesangial cell lines rapidly provide information and demonstrated that NP materials exhibit varying degrees of cytotoxicity. It seems clear that in vitro cellular systems will need to be further developed, standardized and validated (relative to in vivo effects) in order to provide useful screening data about the relative toxicity of nanoparticles.

Detectors made from artificial chemical vapor deposition single crystal diamond have shown great potential for fast neutron spectrometry. In this paper, we present the results of measurements made at the Physikalisch-Technische Bundesanstalt accelerator using neutron fields in the energy range from 7 MeV to 16 MeV. Abstract: The HERACLES-II multidetector is an array composed of several types of detectors and is used to study heavy ion reactions at intermediate energies. The original version was designed to detect fragments produced by collisions between 20 and 100 A MeV. In order to use the radioactive beams accelerated by ISAC-II , the matrix was moved to TRIUMF and underwent an overhaul. The detector thresholds were lowered and the first rings (low angle) were replaced. Tests at 9.2 A MeV allowed us to evaluate the efficiency of the new setup at low beam energy.
