A’nyemaqen Snow Mountain (ASM) is the largest glacier area in the Yellow River source area and has been experiencing significant ablation in recent years. To investigate spatial–temporal elevation changes in ASM, a 21–year Digital Elevation Model (DEM) time series was obtained using the MicMac ASTER (MMASTER) algorithm and ASTER L1A V003 data. It covers the period from January 2002 to January 2023. The mean elevation of ASM decreased by −7.88 ± 3.37 m during this period, with highly spatial variation. The elevation decrease occurred mainly in the lower elevations and opposite in the higher elevations. The corresponding elevation decrease was −12.99 ± 11.29 and −4.45 ± 11.36 m at the southern Yehelong Glacier and the northern Weigeledangxiong Glacier, respectively. Moreover, there exists a temporal variation in ASM. The maximum elevation was observed in February for both ASM and the southern Yehelong Glacier but March for Weigeledangxiong Glacier, with about 1 month lagged. With the elevation time series and climate data from ERA5 datasets, we applied the random forest technique and found that the temperature is the main factor to elevation change in ASM. Furthermore, the response of elevation changes to temperature appeared with a lag and varied with the location. Based on the elevation time series, the ARIMA model was further used to forecast the elevation changes in the next 5 years. All regions will experience the elevation decrease, with a mean decline −1.74 ± 0.39 m and a corresponding rate −0.35 ± 0.08 m/a in ASM. This is similar to that of −0.38 ± 0.16 m/a between 2002 and 2003, showing its stability in the near future.

In the age of big data, services in the pervasive edge environment are expected to offer end-users better Quality-of-Experience (QoE) than that in a normal edge environment. However, the combined impact of the storage, delivery, and sensors used in various types of edge devices in this environment is producing volumes of high-dimensional big data that are increasingly pervasive and redundant. Therefore, enhancing the QoE has become a major challenge in high-dimensional big data in the pervasive edge computing environment. In this paper, to achieve high QoE, we propose a QoE model for evaluating the qualities of services in the pervasive edge computing environment. The QoE is related to the accuracy of high-dimensional big data and the transmission rate of this accurate data. To realize high accuracy of high-dimensional big data and the transmission of accurate data through out the pervasive edge computing environment, in this study we focused on the following two aspects. First, we formulate the issue as a high-dimensional big data management problem and test different transmission rates to acquire the best QoE. Then, with respect to accuracy, we propose a Tensor-Fast Convolutional Neural Network (TF-CNN) algorithm based on deep learning, which is suitable for high-dimensional big data analysis in the pervasive edge computing environment. Our simulation results reveal that our proposed algorithm can achieve high QoE performance.

Facial expression recognition has been well studied for its great importance in the areas of human−computer interaction and social sciences. With the evolution of deep learning, there have been significant advances in this area that also surpass human-level accuracy. Although these methods have achieved good accuracy, they are still suffering from two constraints (high computational power and memory), which are incredibly critical for small hardware-constrained devices. To alleviate this issue, we propose a new Convolutional Neural Network (CNN) architecture eXnet (Expression Net) based on parallel feature extraction which surpasses current methods in accuracy and contains a much smaller number of parameters (eXnet: 4.57 million, VGG19: 14.72 million), making it more efficient and lightweight for real-time systems. Several modern data augmentation techniques are applied for generalization of eXnet; these techniques improve the accuracy of the network by overcoming the problem of overfitting while containing the same size. We provide an extensive evaluation of our network against key methods on Facial Expression Recognition 2013 (FER-2013), Extended Cohn-Kanade Dataset (CK+), and Real-world Affective Faces Database (RAF-DB) benchmark datasets. We also perform ablation evaluation to show the importance of different components of our architecture. To evaluate the efficiency of eXnet on embedded systems, we deploy it on Raspberry Pi 4B. All these evaluations show the superiority of eXnet for emotion recognition in the wild in terms of accuracy, the number of parameters, and size on disk.

The topology design problem of network-coding-based multicast networks is discussed. Findings reveal a significant reduction in the overall topology cost with the adoption of network coding technique to support multicast transmissions.

An analytical framework is proposed for modeling the restoration probability of a connection in active restoration (AR)-based networks. Findings reveal the effectiveness of the proposed framework in examining the inherent relationship among restoration probability, wavelength channel utilization ratio, number of wavelengths per fiber, routes hop length and wavelength conversion capability.

The overall blocking behavior of general horizontally expanded and vertically stacked optical banyan (HVOB) switching networks is studied, where an upper bound on the blocking probability of a HVOB network is developed with respect to the number of planes and the number of stages. The model predicts some unobvious qualitative behaviors of HVOB networks, and reveals that a very low blocking probability can be achieved without introducing either a significantly high hardware cost or a large network depth.

The development of cloud infrastructures inspires the emergence of cloud-native computing. As the most promising architecture for deploying microservices, serverless computing has recently attracted more and more attention in both industry and academia. Due to its inherent scalability and flexibility, serverless computing becomes attractive and more pervasive for ever-growing Internet services. Despite the momentum in the cloud-native community, the existing challenges and compromises still wait for more advanced research and solutions to further explore the potential of the serverless computing model. As a contribution to this knowledge, this article surveys and elaborates the research domains in the serverless context by decoupling the architecture into four stack layers: Virtualization, Encapsule, System Orchestration, and System Coordination. Inspired by the security model, we highlight the key implications and limitations of these works in each layer, and make suggestions for potential challenges to the field of future serverless computing. To address the sparsity and cold-start problem of collaborative filtering, researchers usually make use of side information, such as social networks or item attributes, to improve the performance of recommendation. In this article, we consider the knowledge graph (KG) as the source of side information. To address the limitations of existing embedding-based and path-based methods for KG-aware recommendation, we propose RippleNet, an end-to-end framework that naturally incorporates the KG into recommender systems. RippleNet has two versions: (1) The outward propagation version, which is analogous to the actual ripples on water, stimulates the propagation of user preferences over the set of knowledge entities by automatically and iteratively extending a user's potential interests along links in the KG. The multiple "ripples" activated by a user's historically clicked items are thus superposed to form the preference distribution of the user with respect to a candidate item. (2) The inward aggregation version aggregates and incorporates the neighborhood information biasedly when computing the representation of a given entity. The neighborhood can be extended to multiple hops away to model high-order proximity and capture users' long-distance interests. In addition, we intuitively demonstrate how a KG assists with recommender systems in RippleNet, and we also find that RippleNet provides a new perspective of explainability for the recommended results in terms of the KG. Through extensive experiments on real-world datasets, we demonstrate that both versions of RippleNet achieve substantial gains in a variety of scenarios, including movie, book, and news recommendations, over several state-of-the-art baselines.
