Abstract Background Wu et al. introduced a modified radiographic system that allows classification of all forms of CTD with excellent interobserver and intraobserver reliability. No study to date has evaluated the radiographic characteristics of Wu et al. type C3 CTD with osseous attachment at the level of the metacarpal. Objective This study aimed to evaluate the radiographic features of type C3 CTD according to the system of Wu et al., to describe the different anatomical subtypes of the duplication, and to propose a categorization approach to distinguish diverse surgical strategies based on the radiographic anatomy of this specific subtype of duplication. Methods We performed a retrospective analysis of 215 patients (221 thumbs) diagnosed with Wu et al. type C3 CTD at our Institution between 2015 and 2021. We evaluated all CTDs by examining the alignment of the interphalangeal (IP) and metacarpophalangeal (MP) joints and by assessing the presence of abnormal hypertrophic epiphysis of the primary thumb on posteroanterior (PA) radiographs. The proposed classification system has four types: Type I with good alignment of both MP and IP joints, Type II with ulnar deviation of the MP joint, Type III with radial deviation in the MP joint and Type IV with abnormal hypertrophic epiphysis of the distal phalanx of the main thumb with ulnar deviation of the IP joint with or without ulnar deviation of the MP joint. Results There were 140 male and 75 female patients with CTD (221 thumbs). There were 65 left, 144 right and 6 bilateral forms. The right-to-left, male-to-female and unilateral-to-bilateral ratios were 2.2:1, 1.9:1 and 35.8:1 respectively. The mean age at surgery was 22.3 ± 11.8 months (range, 8–80). The proposed classification system allowed the classification of all CTDs (n = 221). Specifically, 53 fingers were classified as Type I (24%), 136 as Type II (61.5%), 21 as Type III (9.5%), and 11 as Type IV (5%). Conclusion The proposed system is based on radiographic pathoanatomy and complements that of Wu et al. by identifying four distinct subtypes of deformity. It has the potential to improve inter-professional communication and guide surgery in patients with Wu et al. type C3 CTD. However, our results are preliminary and further research is needed to validate them. Level of evidence III.

Aim: To validate the role of the albumin-derived neutrophil-to-lymphocyte (ALB-dNLR) score in diagnosing malnutrition in medical inpatients over 70 years old. Methods: This is a retrospective cross-sectional study involving 7 departments from 14 Chinese hospitals. The ALB-dNLR score was calculated, and outcomes between groups with positive and negative ALB-dNLR scores were compared after propensity score matching (PSM). Afterwards, the outcomes were compared between the groups receiving nutrition support and those not receiving support among malnourished patients diagnosed using the Global Leadership Initiative Malnutrition (GLIM) criteria after PSM. Results: Out of 10,184 cases, 6165 were eligible. 2200 cases were in the positive ALB-dNLR score group. After PSM, 1458 pairs were analyzed, showing lower in-hospital mortality (0.8 % vs. 2.1 %, p = 0.005) and a lower nosocomial infection rate (5.9 % vs. 11.0 %, p

Abstract The bandwidth-tunable absorption enhancement of monolayer graphene is theoretically studied in the near-infrared wavelengths. The monolayer graphene is placed on the silver substrate surface with a periodic array of one-dimensional slits. Two absorption peaks are found to result from the hybridization of delocalized surface plasmon polaritons and localized magnetic plasmons. The positions of absorption peaks are accurately predicted by a coupling model of double oscillators. The full width at half maximum of absorption peaks is largely tuned from about 1–200 nm by changing the array period of slits. The effect of the slit size on absorption peaks is also investigated in detail. Our work is promising in applications for photoelectric devices.

Background and aims Frailty is widespread in the elderly, while there is a bi-directional relationship between frailty and malnutrition. The objectives of this study were to investigate the prevalence and correlation of frailty and nutritional risk in older adult patients and to analyse the factors associated with fatigue which is one indicator of frailty.Methods This cross-sectional multicentre survey study was conducted in five hospitals in the same city from 01 January 2021 to 01 December 2021. We collected information on gender, age, diseases, medication and dietary status. Frailty status was diagnosed using the FRAIL scale, and Nutritional Risk Screening-2002 was used to screen the nutritional risk. Spearman rank correlation was used to analyse the correlation between frailty and nutritional risk. Univariate and multivariate logistic regression analyses were used to analyse the risk factors related to fatigue in all patients and inpatients.Results Among 2016 older adult patients, the prevalence of frailty was 15.1% (305/2016), the prevalence of nutritional risk was 16.2% (327/2016) and the overlap prevalence of frailty and nutritional risk was 7.3% (147/2016). Background: Bruck syndrome (BS) is an extremely rare autosomal-recessive connective tissue disorder mainly characterized by bone fragility, congenital joint contracture, and spinal deformity. It is also considered as a rare form of osteogenesis imperfecta (OI) due to features of osteopenia and fragility fractures. Its two forms, BS1 and BS2, are caused by pathogenic variations in FKBP10 and PLOD2, respectively. Objective: We aimed to improve the clinical understanding of BS by presenting a case from China and to identify the genetic variants that led to this case. Methods: OI was suspected in a Chinese boy with a history of recurrent long bone fractures, lumbar kyphosis, and dentinogenesis imperfecta (DI). Whole-exome sequencing (WES) was performed to identify pathogenic variations. Sanger sequencing was used to confirm the results of the WES. In silico analysis was used to predict the pathogenicity of genetic variants. Results: WES and Sanger sequencing revealed a compound heterozygous variation in the FKBP10 gene (NM_021939, c.23dupG in exon 1, and c.825dupC in exon 5). Both variants resulted in a frameshift and premature stop codon. Of these two variants, c.23dupG has not been previously reported. The patient's parents were heterozygous carriers of one variant. In addition, zoledronic acid treatment improved the vertebral deformity and bone mineral density (BMD) significantly in this patient. Conclusions: A novel compound heterozygous variation of FKBP10, c.23dupG/c.825dupC, was identified in a patient with moderately severe OI. Based on these findings, the patient was diagnosed with BS1 without congenital joint contractures or OI type XI. This study expands the spectrum of FKBP10 genetic variants that cause BS and OI.

ObjectiveThis study aimed (i) to evaluate the radiographic characteristics of patients with congenital thumb duplication (CTD) type C2 according to the classification of Wu et al., (ii) to describe the various subtypes of type C2 CTD, and (iii) to propose a classification system that allows the identification of different surgical strategies based on the radiographic anatomy of this specific subtype of duplication.MethodsWe retrospectively reviewed 92 patients (92 thumbs) with type C2 CTD according to the Wu et al. classification in our institution between August 2015 and April 2021. All CTDs were classified according to the interphalangeal joint alignment of the main thumb at the posteroanterior radiograph of the thumb before operation: type I (no deviation), type II (ulnar deviation), and type III (radial deviation).ResultsAll CTDs (n = 92) could be classified according to the proposed classification system: 76 (82.6%) were type I, 10 (10.9%) were type II, and six were type III (6.5%). According to the Kim system of subtype classification, there were 55 (59.8%) type 1, 24 (26.1%) type 2, and 13 (14.1%) type 3 cases.ConclusionsThe suggested classification completes the Wu et al. system and has the potential to guide surgical treatment in children with type C2 CTD.Level of evidenceIII.

Abstract Positron imaging technology has shown good practical value in industrial non-destructive testing, but the noise and artifacts generated during the imaging process of flow field images will directly affect the accuracy of industrial fault diagnosis. Therefore, how to obtain high-quality reconstructed images of the positron flow field is a challenging problem. In the existing image denoising methods, the denoising performance of positron images of industrial flow fields in special fields still needs to be strengthened. Considering the characteristics of few sample data and strong regularity of positron flow field image,in this work, we propose a new method for image denoising of positron flow field, which is based on a generative adversarial network with zero-shot learning. This method realizes image denoising under the condition of small sample data, and constrains image generation by constructing the extraction model of image internal features. The experimental results show that the proposed method can reduce the noise while retaining the key information of the image. It has also achieved good performance in the practical application of industrial flow field positron imaging.

We propose a novel approach to obtain the ultra-narrowband, electrically switchable, and high-efficiency absorption in the monolayer graphene. The monolayer graphene is sandwiched between the silica substrate and a square array of silver nanospheres, which is covered by a very thick silica layer. The fundamental role of the thick silica cover layer is to homogenize the surrounding medium of the silver nanospheres, and thus efficiently exciting the lattice plasmon resonance. The lattice plasmon resonance arising from the coupling between the dipolar plasmon resonance of silver nanospheres and the zero-order diffraction wave at Wood anomaly can enhance the electromagnetic fields at the graphene surface, and thus greatly improve the near-infrared light absorption of the monolayer graphene with the maximum absorption efficiency up to 45%. Owing to the low radiation loss of the lattice plasmon resonance, the absorption linewidth of the monolayer graphene can be largely compressed to only several nanometers (3.2 nm ∼ 7.4 nm). Moreover, the absorption of the monolayer graphene in our proposed nanostructures has a nearly 100% modulation depth to exhibit an excellent switching property. Our work will be helpful for some graphene-based photoelectric devices.

Sapium sebiferum is a tree with socioeconomic, environmental, and medicinal value. S. sebiferum seeds possess physiological dormancy, which is induced by endogenous inhibitors and can be broken by cold stratification. However, the putative spatiotemporal changes in inhibitor activity are currently unknown, which can hinder the propagation of S. sebiferum seeds. The objective of this study was to investigate the spatiotemporal dynamics of inhibitor activity and its effect on germination during the cold stratification of S. sebiferum seeds. An extractant consisting of 80% methanol was used to extract the inhibitory substance from the seed coat and endosperm at different stages of cold stratification. The extract was then applied to both the Chinese cabbage seeds and excised embryos of S. sebiferum. The germination percentage and germination index were used to assess the inhibitor activity of S. sebiferum seeds. The germination of non-stratified S. sebiferum seeds was completely inhibited (0% germination). As the stratification duration was extended, the germination percentage of S. sebiferum seeds gradually increased. However, dormancy persisted until the stratification duration reached 120 d; at this point, the mean germination was 81.3%. The germination test on Chinese cabbage seeds revealed a significant increase from 10.0% (stratified for 0 d) to 91.2% (stratified for 120 d) when treated with endosperm extracts. The germination indexes also increased from 0.0 to 40.3, indicating a decrease in the inhibitory activity of endosperm extracts. The seed coat extracting solution showed varying dynamic changes. The lowest germination was observed after 60 d of stratification, with no significant differences among the results of 0 d, 30 d, and 60 d. However, after stratification for 90 d, the germination percentage of Chinese cabbage seeds increased. The germination percentage of excised embryos exhibited similar changes to those of Chinese cabbage seeds. This study discovered that endogenous inhibitors were present in both the seed coat and endosperm of S. sebiferum seeds, and the inhibitor activity was higher in the endosperm. The spatiotemporal patterns of inhibitor activity suggest that the endogenous inhibitors move from the endosperm to the seed coat during early cold stratification stages, aiding in the physiological dormancy release of S. sebiferum seeds. These findings enhance our understanding of seed biology in S. sebiferum and will facilitate high-efficiency seed propagation.

Bandwidth-tunable light absorption enhancement in monolayer graphene is practically important for graphene-based photoelectric devices. Especially, it is still a huge challenge to achieve high-efficiency graphene absorption with extremely narrow sub-nanometer bandwidth much smaller than one nanometer. In this work, both broadband and narrowband absorption peaks of monolayer graphene are numerically achieved in visible and near-infrared wavelength ranges. The broadband absorption peak is ascribed to localized dipolar plasmon resonances in individual silver nanodisks, and the narrowband absorption peak arises from collective first-order diffraction coupling effect in periodic array of silver nanodisks. By changing the array period, the full width at half maximum (FWHM) of the broadband absorption peak can vary from 100 nm to 50 nm. Correspondingly, the FWHM of the narrowband absorption peak is tuned from about 6.4 nm to only 0.25 nm, thus realizing an ultra-narrow sub-nanometer bandwidth.

BackgroundOlder patients are at an increased risk of malnutrition due to many factors related to poor clinical outcomes. ObjectiveThis study aims to develop an assisted diagnosis model using machine learning (ML) for identifying older patients with malnutrition and providing the focus of individualized treatment. MethodsWe reanalyzed a multicenter, observational cohort study including 2660 older patients. Baseline malnutrition was defined using the global leadership initiative on malnutrition (GLIM) criteria, and the study population was randomly divided into a derivation group (2128/2660, 80%) and a validation group (532/2660, 20%). We applied 5 ML algorithms and further explored the relationship between features and the risk of malnutrition by using the Shapley additive explanations visualization method. ResultsThe proposed ML models were capable to identify older patients with malnutrition. In the external validation cohort, the top 3 models by the area under the receiver operating characteristic curve were light gradient boosting machine (92.1%), extreme gradient boosting (91.9%), and the random forest model (91.5%). Additionally, the analysis of the importance of features revealed that BMI, weight loss, and calf circumference were the strongest predictors to affect GLIM. A BMI of below 21 kg/m2 was associated with a higher risk of GLIM in older people. ConclusionsWe developed ML models for assisting diagnosis of malnutrition based on the GLIM criteria. The cutoff values of laboratory tests generated by Shapley additive explanations could provide references for the identification of malnutrition. Abstract Hepatocellular carcinoma (HCC) is one of the most malignant tumors in the world, and patients with HCC face a poor prognosis. The conventional therapeutic strategies for HCC have undergone a challenge-riddled evolution owing to side effects and unsatisfactory efficacy. Here, aiming to provide a new method of HCC elimination, we formulated a novel multifunctional nanocapsule (PFP@PLGA/Cu12Sb4S13, PPCu) with applications in contrast-enhanced ultrasound imaging (CEUS) and photothermal therapy (PTT). These PPCu were successfully constructed with an average diameter of 346 nm (polydispersity index, PDI = 0.276). The reinforced contrast ratio of these PPCu was determined by CEUS, revealing their promising applications in image-guided monitoring of HCC treatment. Furthermore, the excellent photoabsorption and biocompatibility indicated by organ H&E staining indicated that PPCu meet quality expectations for use as photothermal transduction agent (PTA). PPCu treatment at 50 °C and higher temperatures efficiently repressed the proliferation, induced the apoptosis and decreased the motility of HCC cells. These effects might have been results of RAS/MAPK/MT-CO1 signaling pathway inhibition. In summary, PPCu were constructed to integrate CEUS and PTT successfully into therapy, which can lead to HCC elimination through RAS/MAPK/MT-CO1 signaling pathway repression.

Abstract Background Distal arthrogryposis (DA) is a group of congenital autosomal‐dominant disorders secondary to defects in joint and muscle function, characterized by multiple joint contractures of the hands and feet. DA can be divided into 10 types according to clinical features. DA has been confirmed to be caused by mutations in genes encoding components of the contractile apparatus of skeletal muscle fibers, such as troponin I2 (TNNI2). Methods In this study, we report a three‐generation DA family belonging to the DA2B type. The clinical characteristics of affected members are genetically stable and consistent, with severe deformities in hands and feet, and two affected adults had short stature. None exhibited facial abnormalities. Blood from three affected and three healthy members were collected for whole‐exome sequencing and Sanger sequencing. Results A missense variant in TNNI2 (NM_003282.4: c.525G>T: p.K175N) was successfully identified, which resulted in the substitution of amino acid at position 175 of TNNI2 from lysine to asparagines. Conclusion The variant c.525G>T in TNNI2 explains the cause of DA in the family. This variant was identified in Chinese people for the first time, and the same variant had been reported in another study but no description of clinical symptoms. Our study comprehensively characterized the c.525G>T variant in TNNI2.

ObjectiveThe objective of this study was to evaluate epidemiological and anatomical characteristics of children with congenital thumb duplication (CTD).MethodsWe retrospectively reviewed 2108 children with CTD. Data regarding sex, age at the surgery, laterality, uni- or bilateral involvement, and dominant side were retrieved from the medical charts. Plain radiographs were used to classify all CTD according to Wassel-Flatt, Rotterdam and Chung classification systems and to evaluate the patho-anatomy of the duplication as well as the presence of associated anomaly.ResultsA total of 796 girls and 1,312 boys with CTD (n = 2,300 thumbs) met the inclusion criteria. The male to female and unilateral to bilateral ratio were 1.6:1 and 10:1, respectively. Associated anomaly was found in 238/2108 patients (11.3%), and the middle phalanx deformity of the 5th finger was the most common one. A dominant thumb, larger and more developed, was on the ulnar side in 2270/2,300 cases (98.7%).According to the Wassel-Flatt classification, type IV (40.2%) was the most common deformity and the extra thumb was connected to the main thumb by a joint in most cases (437/780); overall, 15.7% of thumbs (n = 360) did not fit the Wassel-Flatt classification.According to the Rotterdam classification, type IV (51.3%) was the most common form; in most cases (363/1180) the thumb was hypoplastic or floating. Overall, 3/2,300 thumbs (0.1%) could not be classified according to Rotterdam classification.According to the Chung classification, type A was the most common subtype (44.1%); in most cases (716/1015) the duplication was at the level of the metacarpal bone. Overall, 2/2,300 thumbs (0.1%) did not fit the Chung classification.ConclusionsIn patients from southern China, CTD shows male and right-sided predominance with ulnar-dominant thumb. Abnormalities of the middle phalanx of the 5th finger are more frequent in patients with associated anomaly. The development of a simple and comprehensive classification system is needed to guide treatment and to adequately assess the epidemiological characteristics of patients with CTD in order to facilitate comparison between different patients' populations.Level of evidenceIII

Holt–Oram syndrome (HOS) is a rare autosomal dominant disorder characterized by skeletal abnormalities of the upper limbs and often cardiac malformations. We investigated a Chinese family with clinical features suggestive of HOS. Clinical examinations revealed that both the proband and his father had anomalies in the upper limbs and heart. The proband had a rare common atrium. Whole exome sequencing detected a novel small–insertion mutation (c.680_681insCTGAGAATAAT; p.Ile227fs∗) in TBX5 gene, the known disease gene for HOS. The mutation cosegregated with HOS phenotypes in the family and was predicted to cause frameshift, resulting in a truncated protein. In this study, we described a rare HOS case with common atrium. A novel small–insertion in TBX5 coding sequence was identified and speculated to be the disease–causing genetic variant in the family. Our finding expands the clinical feature spectrum and genetic aetiology spectrum of HOS.

Neonatal necrotizing enterocolitis (NEC) is an inflammatory disease that occurs in premature infants and has a high mortality rate; however, the mechanisms behind this disease remain unclear. The TLR4 signaling pathway in intestinal epithelial cells, mediated by TLR4, is important for the activation of the inflammatory storm in NEC infants. Myeloid differentiation protein 2 (MD2) is a key auxiliary component of the TLR4 signaling pathway. In this study, MD2 was found to be significantly increased in intestinal tissues of NEC patients at the acute stage. We further confirmed that MD2 was upregulated in NEC rats. MD2 inhibitor (MI) pretreatment reduced the occurrence and severity of NEC in neonatal rats, inhibited the activation of NF-κB and the release of inflammatory molecules (TNF-α and IL-6), and reduced the severity of intestinal injury. MI pretreatment significantly reduced enterocyte apoptosis while also maintaining tight junction proteins, including occludin and claudin-1, and protecting intestinal mucosal permeability in NEC rats. In addition, an NEC in vitro model was established by stimulating IEC-6 enterocytes with LPS. MD2 overexpression in IEC-6 enterocytes significantly activated NF-κB. Further, both MD2 silencing and MI pretreatment inhibited the inflammatory response. Overexpression of MD2 increased damage to the IEC-6 monolayer cell barrier, while both MD2 silencing and MI pretreatment played a protective role. In conclusion, MD2 triggers an inflammatory response through the TLR4 signaling pathway, leading to intestinal mucosal injury in NEC. In addition, MI alleviates inflammation and reduces intestinal mucosal injury caused by the inflammatory response by blocking the TLR4-MD2/NF-κB signaling axis. These results suggest that inhibiting MD2 may be an important way to prevent NEC.

Ultrathin (5–50 nm) epitaxial superconducting niobium nitride (NbN) films were grown on AlN-buffered c-plane Al2O3 by an industrial scale physical vapor deposition technique at 400°C. Both X-ray diffraction and scanning electron microscopy analysis show high crystallinity of the (111)-oriented NbN films, with a narrow full-width-at-half-maximum of the rocking curve down to 0.030°. The lattice constant decreases with decreasing NbN layer thickness, suggesting lattice strain for films with thicknesses below 20 nm. The superconducting transition temperature, the transition width, the upper critical field, the irreversibility line, and the coherence length are closely correlated to the film thickness.

We theoretically study how to greatly improve the near-infrared light absorption of monolayer graphene through the excitation of magnetic resonance in metamaterials. The absorption maximum of monolayer graphene is able to reach up to about 77% at the communication wavelength of 1550 nm. The conventionally defined absorption bandwidth, i.e., the full width at half maximum (FWHM), is nearly 160 nm. Thanks to the localization nature of magnetic resonance, the broadband high-efficiency absorption of monolayer graphene is insensitive to the incident angle and the light polarization. The absorption maximum, the absorption bandwidth, and the resonance position all have almost no change, when the incident angle is increased to even 60 degrees for both p and s polarizations. By applying an external bias voltage to change Fermi energy, the absorption in graphene can be completely modulated, with a nearly 100% modulation depth. Furthermore, the graphene absorption has an abrupt and large change around the interband transition, which exhibits an electrical switching property. Our work may find potential applications in graphene-based optoelectronic devices such as photodetector and modulator.

ObjectiveTo evaluate the effectiveness of a new tracer (S)-1-(4-(6-(dimethylamino)quinoxalin-2-yl)phenoxy)-3-fluoropropan-2-ol ([18F]-S16), in distinguishing patients with AD from HCs.MethodsPaired [18F]-S16 and [18F]-THK5317 scans were acquired in five patients with AD, six HCs, one subject with a semantic variant of primary progressive aphasia (sv-PPA) and one subject with probable progressive supranuclear palsy (PSP). Dynamic PET scanning was performed over 90 min after injection of the tracers. Standardized uptake values (SUV) and cortical-to-cerebellum standardized uptake value ratios (SUVRs) were used for tau deposition semi-quantization. A voxel-based analysis was employed to assess the uptake difference between populations.Results[18F]-S16 exhibited excellent blood-brain-barrier penetration. AD patients showed increased cortical [18F]-THK5317 and [18F]-S16 binding. Compared to HCs, AD patients showed significantly increased cortical [18F]-S16 uptake in the bilateral occipital cortex, posterior cingulated cortex/precuneus, and lateral frontal cortex. Notable [18F]-S16 uptake was observed in the basal ganglia and brainstem compared to the neocortex. A substantial [18F]-S16 signal was detected in the basal ganglia and midbrain in a patient with probable PSP and in the bilateral anterior temporal cortex in a sv-PPA patient.Conclusion[18F]-S16 might be of help to detect tau protein in vivo.

Electromagnetically induced transparencies (EITs) in metallic nanostructures and metamaterials have attracted increasing attentions in recent years, because of many applications such as optical sensing. In this work, we study theoretically the classical analogy of double EITs in a peridic array of metal nanodisks on a dielectric film. It is found that the double EITs arise from the interactions between the localized surface plasmons (LSPs) of metal nanodisks and the waveguide modes within dielectric film. The resonance positions of double EITs can be predicted analytically by the well-known waveguide theory, and can be also largely tuned by varying the array period of metal nanodisks or the thickness of dielectric film. With the help of theoretical model of Fano interference, the EITs profile is approximately reproduced. The double EITs may hold potential in refractive index sensing.

Abstract Background Water uptake is essential for seed germination. However, Gleditsia sinensis seeds have a water-impermeable seed coat, which is beneficial for its adaption to the environment, but prohibits its germination without treatment. This feature may be associated with the structure of the seed coat. Thus, the aim of this research was to identify and describe the initial water uptake site and water movement and to determine the relationship between seed coat structure and water absorption. Results A water temperature of 80 °C was optimal to break the hardseededness of G. sinensis seeds. Scanning electron microscopy (SEM) images revealed that the seed coat consisted of a palisade layer and light line that can hinder water entry into the seed. Also, a structure of vascular bundles existed in the hilar region. Hot water treatment caused the tightly closed micropyle to open and the cavity beneath it expanded; the layer of palisade cells in the lens was raised. The embryo dye-tracking tests showed that the radicle tip was the initial region to be stained red. After staining for 24 h, the red-stained area on the vascular bundle side of cotyledon was more extensive than that on the other side. Further studies by MRI maps indicated that the micropyle was the initial site for water imbibition. Some water then migrated along the space between the seed coat and the endosperm to the chalazal; simultaneously, the rest of the water reached the embryonic axis and spread into cotyledons. The maps of 20–24 h showed that water was unevenly distributed within the cotyledons in a way that the edge parts were more hydrated than the center. Blocking tests showed that the hilar region was the initial and an important region during seed imbibition. The medial region and chalazal portion were capable of imbibing water when the hilar region was blocked, but water absorption was later and slower than that through the hilar region. Conclusion MRI technology provides a promising and non-invasive technique to identify the water gap and the path of water movement in the seed. Combined with the results of SEM, the relation between seed coat and its imbibition can be inferred.

The purpose of this study was to determine whether Cercis chinensis seeds contain endogenous germination inhibitors, and if so, to clarify the dynamic changes to the inhibitors during dormancy release. A cabbage seed germination test was conducted to assess the seed extract activities during dormancy release. The endogenous inhibitor components were analyzed by gas chromatography–mass spectrometry and the dynamic changes to the endogenous inhibitors were analyzed by high-performance liquid chromatography. The analyses revealed 1,2,3-benzenetriol (phenolic compound) in the seedcoat is a water-soluble endogenous inhibitor, and the IC50 (the concentration at which 1,2,3-benzenetriol inhibited radicle growth of cabbage seeds by 50%) of 1,2,3-benzenetriol was 51.2 µg⋅mL–1. During dormancy release, the seed 1,2,3-benzenetriol content decreased to 17.7 µg⋅mL–1 (stratified for 60 days) from 561.4 µg⋅mL–1 (control). The abscisic acid (ABA) content exhibited the same tendency, decreasing from 5.6 ng⋅mL–1 to 0.5 ng⋅mL–1 after 60-day stratification. Exogenous ABA was highly inhibitory toward cabbage seed germination, with an IC50 of 1.5 ng⋅mL–1. These results indicate that ABA and 1,2,3-benzenetriol are important endogenous inhibitors in C. chinensis seeds, wherein they regulate seed dormancy, even at low concentrations.

Abstract Background Vascular Parkinsonism(VaP) is defined as parkinsonism resulting from cerebral vascular disease(CVD), with presence of variable motor and non-motor signs that are corroborated by clinical, anatomic or imaging findings of cerebrovascular disease. Overlapping syndromes with mixed pathologies make VaP difficult to distinguish from primary neurodegenerative parkinsonism.To understand the clinical and pathological features of VaP,we report a case of autopsy confirmed vascular Parkinsonism that was clinical misdiagnosed as idiopathic Parkinson’s disease.Clinical features include early mixed symptoms of dementia,behavioral disturbance and parkinsonism that were similar to Dementia with lewy Body(DLB) and Parkinson disease Dementia(PDD). Case presentation A 84-year-old man presented progressive parkinsonism with prominent postural instability, gait impairment, pseudobulbar, early cognitive impairment, irritability, hallucination, urinary symptoms and poor responsiveness to dopaminergic drugs. He was clinically diagnosed as Parkinson disease(PD). In the post-mortem study, we examined Aβ and phospho-tau as pathological biomarker for Alzheimer’s disease(AD), α-synucleing in medulla, pons and midbrain for PD and DLB. Hematoxylin and eosin staining in cerebral cortex, cerebellum and brainstem examines vascular pathological changes and microvascular lesion.Neither Lewy bodies in the substantia nigra ,locus ceruleus and cerebrumnor accumulation of Aβ, neurofibrillary tangles were noted. Instead, there were many cerebral infarctions and widespread arteriosclerosis in the brain. The final brain autopsy supported a diagnosis of VaP not PD. Conclusions This case of pathologically confirmed VaP misdiagnosed as idiopathic PD suggested that we must be vigilant about the possibility of VaP for patients with parkinsonisms, cognitive impairments, early behavioral and psychological symptoms,imaging performances of cerebral small vessel disease and other vascular damages.

Abstract Based on the expert consensus on parenteral and enteral nutrition support for geriatric patients in China in 2013, domestic multidisciplinary experts were gathered to summarize the new evidence in the field of elderly nutritional support at home and abroad. The 2013 consensus was comprehensively updated and upgraded to a guideline by referring to the World Health Organization (WHO) guidelines for the Grading of Recommendations Assessment, Development, and Evaluation system for grading evidence. These guidelines were divided into two parts: general conditions and common diseases. After discussion by all members of the academic group and consultation with relevant experts, 60 recommendations were ultimately established as standardized nutritional support in the field of geriatrics in China.

Paeonia ostii is a woody oil crop with potential value as an edible oil. With the aim of acquiring systematic knowledge of the development of P. ostii seeds, the oil content, biomass, and water content of the seeds were determined. Changes in the distribution of hydrogen protons in P. ostii seeds during follicle development were traced using magnetic resonance imaging (MRI). The formation of oil bodies in the endosperm and embryo was observed using transmission electron microscopy (TEM). Dynamic changes in oleic acid, linoleic acid, and α-linolenic acid contents were assessed by gas chromatography-mass spectrometry (GC-MS). The magnetic resonance images showed that, during early follicle development [45–85 days after flowering (DAF)], a greater quantity of liquid mucus was present within the seeds, and seeds in the same follicle developed at different rates. At 95 to 115 DAF, proton density was distributed evenly in all areas of the seed. A small dark area appeared in the center of the seed, and mucus in the follicles and water in the pericarp disappeared gradually. TEM observations showed that at 45 DAF, a few oil bodies were scattered at the cell periphery in the endosperm, and oil bodies were more numerous in the embryo. With the progression of seed development, the number and size of oil bodies in the embryo and endosperm continued to increase. The fresh and dry mass of P. ostii seeds increased from 45 to 105 DAF, then decreased after 105 DAF. The moisture content decreased, whereas the oil content increased and attained 33.1% at seed maturity. The three predominant unsaturated fatty acids accumulated simultaneously and showed stages of initial accumulation (45–65 DAF) and rapid accumulation (65–105 DAF). The results suggest that 65 to 105 DAF is a critical period for unsaturated fatty acid accumulation in P. ostii seeds.

The research goal of this article is to imaging the oil distribution in landing gear hydraulic cylinder by Positron Emission Tomography(PET). Considering the flexibility and commercial cost for automation testing, two kinds of Not-Full-Ring sensors arrangement, Uniform-arrangement and Bilateral-arrangement, are proposed. The Full-Ring PET is used as the contrast template of imaging. Firstly, GATE 7.1 is used as the Monte Carlo simulation platform to simulate the sensors arrangement of the two Not-Full-Ring schemes. The results of scattering fraction, sensitivity and photon energy distribution were used to evaluate the feasibility of the two schemes. Then, a set of verification device with rotating platform and variable sensing diameter is constructed. The two kinds of Not-Full-Ring sensors arrangements were verified through the verification device. By imaging the hydraulic oil in the hydraulic cylinder, the results were evaluated and compared by using Signal Noise Ratio(SNR). According to the simulation and verification results, Not-Full-Ring scheme is feasible for imaging the liquid distribution in the hydraulic cavity. Uniform- arrangement has a more better imaging performance than Bilateral-arrangement. Such sensors arrangement scheme is not only suitable for this research, but also suitable for other PET imaging applications which need to consider the flexibility and commercial cost.

Background: Malnutrition is prevalent among patients with cancer. The Global Leadership Initiative on Malnutrition (GLIM) released new universal criteria for diagnosing malnutrition in 2019. The objectives of this study were to assess the prevalence of malnutrition in patients with cancer using the GLIM criteria, explore the correlation between the GLIM criteria, and clinical outcomes, and compare the GLIM criteria with subjective global assessment (SGA).Methods: This retrospective analysis was conducted on 2,388 patients with cancer enrolled in a multicenter study. Nutritional risk was screened using the Nutritional Risk Screening-2002, and the nutritional status was assessed using SGA and GLIM criteria. Chi-square analysis and Wilcoxon rank sum test, stratified by age 65 years, were used to evaluate the effect of GLIM-defined malnutrition on clinical outcomes. Logistic regression analysis was used to analyze the nutritional status and complications, and the interrater reliability was measured using a kappa test.Results: The prevalence of malnutrition defined by the GLIM criteria was 38.9% (929/2,388). GLIM-defined malnutrition was significantly associated with in-hospital mortality (P = 0.001) and length of hospital stays (P = 0.001). Multivariate logistic regression analysis showed GLIM-defined malnutrition significantly increased complications (odds ratio [OR] 1.716, 95% CI 1.227–2.400, P = 0.002). The GLIM criteria had a “moderate agreement” (kappa = 0.426) compared with the SGA.Conclusions: The prevalence of malnutrition in hospitalized patients with cancer is high, and malnourishment in patients with cancer is associated with poorer clinical outcomes. The use of the GLIM criteria in assessing the nutritional status of inpatients with cancer is recommended and can be used as the basis for nutritional interventions.

Objective: We aimed to compare amyloid deposition at the lobar cerebral microbleed (CMB) sites of cerebral amyloid angiopathy (CAA), Alzheimer’s disease (AD), and cognitively normal healthy controls (NC) and to propose a novel diagnostic method for differentiating CAA patients from AD patients with integrated 11C-Pittsburgh compound B (PIB) positron emission tomography (PET)/magnetic resonance (MR) and assess its diagnostic value.Methods: Nine CAA, 15 AD patients, and 15 NC subjects were enrolled in this study. Each subject underwent an 11C-PIB brain PET/MR examination. Susceptibility weighted imaging was assessed to detect CMB locations, and standardized uptake value ratios (SUVRs) were measured at these sites. Cortical PIB distributions were quantitatively evaluated. Patients with CAA, AD, and NC subjects were compared with global and regional cortical SUVRs at CMB cites. The diagnostic accuracy of MRI, PIB-PET, and PET/MR in differentiating CAA and AD was evaluated.Results: Lobar CMBs were detected in all the CAA patients, eight of the 15 AD patients (53.3%), and four of the 15 NC subjects (26.7%), respectively. The PIB deposition at CMB sites was significantly higher in CAA patients compared with AD patients and NC subjects in terms of SUVR (1.72 ± 0.10 vs. 1.42 ± 0.16 and 1.17 ± 0.08; p < 0.0001). The PIB deposition was associated with CMB locations and was greatest in the occipital and temporal regions of CAA patients. The global cortical PIB deposition was significantly higher in CAA than in NC subjects (1.66 ± 0.06 vs. 1.21 ± 0.06; p < 0.0001) and significantly lower than in AD patients (1.66 ± 0.06 vs. 1.86 ± 0.17; p < 0.0001). In contrast, the occipital/global PIB uptake ratio was significantly increased in CAA (occipital/global ratio, 1.05 ± 0.02) relative to AD patients (1.05 ± 0.02 vs. 0.99 ± 0.04; p < 0.001). PET/MR had a higher accuracy (sensitivity, 88.9%; specificity, 93.3%) than separate PET and MR.Conclusion: Our results indicate that the CMBs occur preferentially at loci with concentrated amyloid. By combining lobar CMBs with regional cortical amyloid deposition, the proposed workflow can further improve CAA diagnostic accuracy compared to each method alone. These findings improve our knowledge regarding the pathogenesis of CMBs and highlight the potential utility of PIB-PET/MR as a non-invasive tool for distinguishing CAA and AD patients.

Objective: To investigate the characteristics of tau deposition and its impact on functional connectivity (FC) in Alzheimer’s disease (AD).Methods: Hybrid PET/MRI scans with [18F]-THK5317 and neuropsychological assessments were undertaken in 26 participants with AD and 19 healthy controls (HC). The standardized uptake value ratio (SUVR) of [18F]-THK5317 PET imaging was compared between the AD and HC groups. Significant clusters that revealed higher tau deposition in the AD group compared to the HC group were selected as regions of interest (ROI) for FC analysis. We evaluated the difference in the FC between the two groups for each ROI pair. The clinical and radiological characteristics were compared between the AD patients with negative FC and AD patients with positive FC for exploratory analysis.Results: The bilateral inferior lateral temporal lobe, dorsal prefrontal cortex, precuneus, posterior cingulate cortex, hippocampus, and occipital lobe showed significantly higher [18F]-THK5317 accumulation in AD patients. Decreased FC in regions with higher SUVR was observed in AD patients, and the FC strength was negatively correlated with regional SUVR. Patients with a positive FC exhibited older ages, better cognitive performances, and a lower SUVR than patients with a negative FC.Conclusions: An impact of tau deposition was observed on FC at the individual level in AD patients. Our findings suggested that the combination of tau-PET and rs-fMRI might help predict AD progression.

The controlling nutritional status (CONUT) score assesses nutritional status and is associated with short- and long-term prognoses in some diseases, but the significance of the CONUT score for the prediction of in-hospital mortality in older adults is unknown. The purpose was to determine the importance of the CONUT score for the prediction of in-hospital mortality, short-term complications, length of hospital stay, and hospital costs in older adults. Our retrospective cohort study analyzed data from 11,795 older adult patients from two multicenter cohort studies. We performed receiver operating characteristic curve analysis using in-hospital mortality as the endpoint and determined the appropriate CONUT score cut-off by the Youden index. The patients were divided into two high and low groups according to the CONUT cut-off value, and the differences in clinical characteristics and in-hospital clinical outcomes between the two groups were compared. We compared the accuracy of the CONUT score and other nutrition-related tools in predicting in-hospital mortality by calculating the area under the receiver operating characteristic curve and performed univariate and multivariate analyses of predictors of in-hospital mortality. Among all the patients, 178 (1.5%) patients experienced in-hospital death. The optimal cut-off values was 5.5 for the CONUT score. To solve the problem of insufficient sample resources and poor noise immunity in single-image super-resolution (SR) restoration procedure, the paper has proposed the single-image SR algorithm based on structural self-similarity and deformation block features (SSDBF). First, the proposed method constructs a scale model, expands the search space as much as possible, and overcomes the shortcomings caused by the lack of a single-image SR training sample; Second, the limited internal dictionary size is increased by the geometric deformation of the sample block; Finally, in order to improve the anti-noise performance of the reconstructed picture, a group sparse learning dictionary is used to reconstruct the pending image. The experimental results show that, compared with state-of-the-art algorithms such as bicubic interpolation (BI), sparse coding (SC), deep recursive convolutional network (DRCN), multi-scale deep SR network (MDSR), super-resolution convolutional neural network (SRCNN) and second-order directional total generalized variation (DTGV). The SR images with more subjective visual effects and higher objective evaluation can be obtained through the proposed method. Compared with existing algorithms, the structural network converges more rapidly, the image edge and texture reconstruction effects are obviously improved, and the image quality evaluation, such as peak signal-noise ratio (PSNR), root mean square error (RMSE), and structural similarity (SSIM), are also superior and popular in image evaluation.

Abstract Hereditary multiple exostoses (HME) is a rare skeletal disorder characterized by the formation of multiple benign cartilage-capped tumors, usually in the metaphyseal region of the long bones. Over 70% of HME cases arise from monoallelic mutations in either of the two genes encoding the heparan sulfate (HS) synthesis enzymes, ext1 and ext2. To identify more HME-associated mutations, genomic DNA from members of five independent consanguineous families with HME was sequenced with whole exome sequencing (WES). A novel heterozygous splice site mutation (c.1173+2T>A) in ext2 was detected in all three affected members of family V. Further study showed that the novel mutation caused exon 7 of ext2 mRNA to be skipped during splicing and caused a frameshift after the codon for Arg360, which results in the appearance of new 43 codons, followed by a termination codon. Although the resulting truncated protein was still localized to the Golgi, similar to the full-length EXT2, its HS synthesis activity decreased by 40%. In this study, a novel splice site mutation in ext2 was identified and suggested to be a pathogenic mutation of HME, which may expand the genetic etiology spectrum of HME and may be helpful for clinical genetic counseling and prenatal diagnosis.

PET (Positron Emission Computed Tomography) imaging is a challenge due to the ill-posed nature and the low data of photo response lines. Generative adversarial networks have been widely used in computer vision and made great success recently. In our paper, we trained an adversarial model to improve the industrial positron images quality based on the attention mechanism. The innovation of the proposed method is that we build a memory module that focuses on the contribution of feature details to interested parts of images. We use an encoder to get the hidden vectors from a basic dataset as the prior knowledge and train the nets jointly. We evaluate the quality of the simulation positron images by MS-SSIM and PSNR. At the same time, the real industrial positron images also show a good visual effect.

Abstract We numerically investigate the coupling effects of surface plasmon polaritons (SPPs) and magnetic dipole (MD) resonances in metamaterials, which are composed of an Ag nanodisk array and a SiO2 spacer on an Ag substrate. The periodicity of the Ag nanodisk array leads to the excitation of SPPs at the surface of the Ag substrate. The near-field plasmon interactions between individual Ag nanodisks and the Ag substrate form MD resonances. When the excitation wavelengths of SPPs are tuned to approach the position of MD resonances by changing the array period of Ag nanodisks, SPPs and MD resonances are coupled together into two hybridized modes, whose positions can be well predicted by a coupling model of two oscillators. In the strong coupling regime of SPPs and MD resonances, the hybridized modes exhibit an obvious anti-crossing, resulting into an interesting phenomenon of Rabi splitting. Moreover, the magnetic fields under the Ag nanodisks are greatly enhanced, which may find some potential applications, such as magnetic nonlinearity.

This research has experimentally investigated the influence on vibration characteristics of thin cantilever cylindrical shell (TCS) with hard coating under cantilever boundary condition. Firstly, the theoretical model of TCS with hard coating is established to calculate its natural frequencies and modal shapes so as to roughly understand vibration characteristic of TCS when it is coated with hard coating material. Then, by considering its nonlinear stiffness and damping influences, an experiment system is established to accurately measure vibration parameters of the shell, and the corresponding test methods and identification techniques are also proposed. Finally, based on the measured data, the influences on natural frequencies, modal shapes, damping ratios, and vibration responses of TCS with hard coating are analyzed and discussed in detail. It can be found that hard coating can play an important role in vibration reduction of TCS, and for the most modes of TCS, hard coating will result in the decrease of natural frequencies, but the decreased level is not very big, and its damping effects on the higher frequency range of the shell are weak and ineffective. Therefore, in order to make better use of this coating material, we must carefully choose the concerned antivibration frequency range of the shell; otherwise it may lead to some negative effects.

The alternate mapping correlated k-distribution (AMCKD) method is studied and applied to satellite simulations. To evaluate the accuracy of AMCKD, the simulated brightness temperatures at the top of the atmosphere are compared with line-by-line radiative transfer model (LBLRTM) or the observed data which are from Advanced Himawari Imager (AHI) on board the Himawari-8, as well as Medium Resolution Spectral Imager (MERSI) on board the Fengyun-3D. The result of AMCKD is also compared with the algorithm of Radiative Transfer for the Television Observation Satellite Operational Vertical Sounder (RTTOV). Under the standard atmospheric profiles, the absolute errors of AMCKD in all longwave channels of AHI and MERSI are bounded by 0.44K compared to the benchmark results of LBLRTM, which are more accurate than those of RTTOV. In the most cases, the error of AMCKD is smaller than the NEDT at ST, while the error of RTTOV is larger than the instrument noise equivalent temperature (NEDT) at scene temperature (ST). Under real atmospheric profile conditions, the errors of AMCKD increase, because the input data from ERA-Interim reanalysis dataause bias in the satellite remote sensing results. In the most considered cases, the accuracy of AMCKD is higher than RTTOV, while the efficiency of AMCKD is slightly slower than RTTOV.

The influence on modal parameters of thin cylindrical shell (TCS) under bolt looseness boundary is investigated. Firstly, bolt looseness boundary of the shell is divided into two types, that is, different bolt looseness numbers and different bolt looseness levels, and natural frequencies and mode shapes are calculated by finite element method to roughly master vibration characteristics of TCS under these conditions. Then, the following measurements and identification techniques are used to get precise frequency, damping, and shape results; for example, noncontact laser Doppler vibrometer and vibration shaker with excitation level being precisely controlled are used in the test system; “preexperiment” is adopted to determine the required tightening torque and verify fixed constraint boundary; the small-segment FFT processing technique is employed to accurately measure nature frequency and laser rotating scanning technique is used to get shape results with high efficiency. Finally, based on the measured results obtained by the above techniques, the influence on modal parameters of TCS under two types of bolt looseness boundaries is analyzed and discussed. It can be found that bolt looseness boundary can significantly affect frequency and damping results which might be caused by changes of nonlinear stiffness and damping and in bolt looseness positions.

The mechanical parameters of hard coating, such as storage modulus and loss factor, are affected by preparation technology significantly and have the strain dependent characteristic. So the effective identification of these mechanical parameters becomes a challenge task. In this study, a hard-coating cantilever thin plate under base excitation was taken as the research object, and an inverse method was developed to identify these mechanical parameters. Firstly, the principles of identifying storage modulus and loss factor of hard coating were presented according to the inverse method. Then, from the need of parameters identification, the analytical model and calculation formula of equivalent strain for the hard-coating composite plate were derived. Next, also for parameter identification, the vibration experiments about the cantilever plate coated with NiCoCrAlY+ yttria-stabilised zirconia (YSZ) hard coating were performed. Finally, the mechanical parameters of NiCoCrAlY+YSZ hard coating with strain dependent characteristic were identified by the proposed method. The identification results show that the change rules of storage modulus and loss factor of hard coating with the strain amplitude are almost consistent with the results listed in the other similar references. However, the identification results herein can more directly serve for the dynamic modeling of hard-coating plate-shape composite structure.

The open ratio of a current collector has a great impact on direct methanol fuel cell (DMFC) performance. Although a number of studies have investigated the influence of the open ratio of DMFC current collectors, far too little attention has been given to how geometry (including the shape and feature size of the flow field) affects a current collector with an equal open ratio. In this paper, perforated and parallel current collectors with an equal open ratio of 50% and different feature sizes are designed, and the corresponding experimental results are shown to explain the geometry effects on the output power of the DMFC. The results indicate that the optimal feature sizes are between 2 and 2.5 mm for both perforated and parallel flow field in the current collectors with an equal open ratio of 50%. This means that for passive methanol fuel cells, to achieve the highest output power, the optimal feature size of the flow field in both anode and cathode current collectors is between 2 and 2.5 mm under the operating mode of this experiment. The effects of rib and channel position are also investigated, and the results indicate that the optimum pattern depends on the feature sizes of the flow field. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

Crystallin proteins are a class of main structural proteins of the vertebrate eye lens, and their solubility and stability directly determine transparency and refractive power of the lens. Mutation in genes that encode these crystallin proteins is the most common cause for congenital cataracts. Despite extensive studies, the pathogenic and molecular mechanisms that effect congenital cataracts remain unclear. In this study, we identified a novel mutation in CRYBB1 from a congenital cataract family, and demonstrated that this mutation led to an early termination of mRNA translation, resulting in a 49-residue C-terminally truncated CRYβB1 protein. We show this mutant is susceptible to proteolysis, which allowed us to determine a 1.2- Å resolution crystal structure of CRYβB1 without the entire Cterminal domain. In this crystal lattice, we observed that two N-terminal domain monomers form a dimer that structurally resembles the WT monomer, but with different surface characteristics. Biochemical analyses and cell-based data also suggested that this mutant is significantly more liable to aggregate and degrade compared to WT CRYβB1. Taken together, our results provide an insight into the mechanism regarding how a mutant crystalin contributes to the development of congenital cataract possibly through alteration of inter-protein interactions that result in protein aggregation. Objective: To evaluate the effectiveness of a new tracer (S)-1-(4-(6-(dimethylamino)quinoxalin-2-yl)phenoxy)-3-fluoropropan-2-ol ([18F]-S16), in distinguishing patients with AD from HCs. Methods: Paired [18F]-S16 and [18F]-THK5317 scans were acquired in five patients with AD, six HCs, one subject with a semantic variant of primary progressive aphasia (sv-PPA) and one subject with probable progressive supranuclear palsy (PSP). Dynamic PET scanning was performed over 90 min after injection of the tracers. Standardized uptake values (SUV) and cortical-to-cerebellum standardized uptake value ratios (SUVRs) were used for tau deposition semi-quantization. A voxel-based analysis was employed to assess the uptake difference between populations. Results: [18F]-S16 exhibited excellent blood-brain-barrier penetration. AD patients showed increased cortical [18F]-THK5317 and [18F]-S16 binding. Compared to HCs, AD patients showed significantly increased cortical [18F]-S16 uptake in the bilateral occipital cortex, posterior cingulated cortex/precuneus, and lateral frontal cortex. Notable [18F]-S16 uptake was observed in the basal ganglia and brainstem compared to the neocortex. A substantial [18F]-S16 signal was detected in the basal ganglia and midbrain in a patient with probable PSP and in the bilateral anterior temporal cortex in a sv-PPA patient. Proper regulation of microtubule (MT) stability and dynamics is vital for essential cellular processes, including axonal transportation and synaptic growth and remodeling in neurons. In the present study, we demonstrate that the Drosophila ankyrin repeat and KH domaincontaining protein Mask negatively affects MT stability in both larval muscles and motor neurons. In larval muscles, loss-of-function of mask increases MT polymer length, and in motor neurons, loss of mask function results in overexpansion of the presynaptic terminal at the larval neuromuscular junctions (NMJs). mask genetically interacts with stathmin (stai), a neuronal modulator of MT stability, in the regulation of axon transportation and synaptic terminal stability. Our structure-function analysis of Mask revealed that its ankyrin repeats domain-containing N-terminal portion is sufficient to mediate Mask's impact on MT stability. Furthermore, we discovered that Mask negatively regulates the abundance of the MT-associated protein Jupiter in motor neuron axons, and that neuronal knocking down of Jupiter partially suppresses mask loss-of-function phenotypes at the larval NMJs. In the present work, epitaxial LaNi1-xO3 films were grown on SrTiO3, (LaAlO3)0.3(Sr2AlTaO6)0.7, and LaAlO3 substrates by pulsed laser deposition from targets with different Ni stoichiometry. Effect of Ni content on the transport properties of LaNiO3 films was investigated under different strain states. It is found that under tensile strain the carriers in the LaNi0.98O3 films behave according to the Fermi-liquid theory, while under compressive strain an anomalous T1.5 dependence of the resistivity which does not agree with the Fermi-liquid theory is observed in the films. On the other hand, only T1.5 dependence is observed in the LaNi1.20O3 films irrespective of strain states. The results show that strain has a profound influence on the transport properties of LNO films with Ni deficiency and the effect of strain is eliminated in the LNO films with excess Ni. Combined with the XRD results, it is proposed that the change in transport behavior is closely related to the stoichiometry of the LNO films. Purpose: The purpose of this study was to identify the correlation between the vascular development of the femoral head and avascular necrosis (AVN) in patients with developmental dysplasia of the hip (DDH) treated by closed reduction (CR). Methods: We retrospectively reviewed 78 patients with DDH treated by CR (83 hips). The vascular maturity, number of vessels and perfusion changes of the femoral head were assessed on perfusion MRI (pMRI) before and after CR. Results: The number of vessels (mean 4.2 sd 1.4) of the femoral head and the ratio (36.1%) of mature vessels (type III) on the dislocated side were significantly less than those at contralateral side (mean 6.0 sd 1.2; 82.2%) (p < 0.001). Of the included 83 hips, 39 hips (61.5%) showed decreased perfusion of the femoral head, including partial decreased (Class B, 47.0%) and global decreased (Class C, 14.5%), at the dislocated side, which was significantly more than those at contralateral side (0.0%) (p < 0.001). In total, 32 out of 83 hips (38.5%) developed AVN. The rate of AVN with Class A (18.8%) which perfusion of the femoral head was normal (unchanged or enhanced) was significantly less than those with Class C (66.7%) (p = 0.006). Conclusion: The vascular development and perfusion changes of the femoral head on the dislocated side are significantly worse than those at contralateral side. Immature vascularity of the femoral head before CR and poor perfusion of the femoral head after CR may be risk factors for AVN in patients with DDH. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]
