An overview of the functional dependences (formulas) for describing the properties of atomic particles sputtered during ion bombardment of the surface of a solid body is presented. The dependence of sputtering coefficients on the energy and angle of incidence of the bombarding particle is considered. The energy spectra and average energies of sputtered particles are presented. Formulas for calculating the quantities under consideration are proposed by the example of a target made of tungsten and hydrogen isotopes as projectiles. These data are necessary to estimate the entry of sputtered tungsten atoms as an impurity into a hot plasma using transport codes. When the tungsten impurity concentration is higher than the critical one, it is impossible to carry out a controlled thermonuclear reaction with the planned energy output in the ITER tokamak reactor. Sputtering coefficients also play an important role in simulating the entry of impurities into plasma facilities as a result of the interaction between hydrogen fuel atoms and the materials of the divertor and the first wall. The paper reports the calculation of the probabilities of Auger transitions taking place in the process of filling a vacancy on the 2pπ-orbital in an Ne+–Ne quasimolecule, a short-lived system which arises when the ion and atom approach each other and decays when they fly apart. Calculations for various ionization degrees of the quasimolecule particles were performed for the first time. It was found out that the system ionization degree increases very significantly (from 2 to 6) with increasing collision energy and decreasing distance of the particles closest approach. Using of the quantum mechanical approach and taking into account the collision dynamics made it possible to quantitatively describe for the first time the experimental Auger electron spectra of a complex many-electron quasimolecule. The contribution of the transition from the initial 3dπ–3dπ state to the 2pπ-orbital was shown to be predominant among the whole variety of possible Auger decay channels. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

Approximate potentials for protons and hydrogen atoms in metals have been proposed. It has been shown that the difference between the interatomic interaction potentials obtained in the density functional theory for the gas phase and our potentials obtained by processing experimental data on the scattering of atomic particles from the surface of solids can be explained by including the screening of the charge of an incident particle. Beryllium fluxes into the ITER tokamak plasma due to sputtering of the first wall by D and T atoms leaving the plasma were estimated. The energy spectra of deuterium and tritium atoms leaving the plasma were modeled using the DOUBLE-MC code. The flux of beryllium atoms entering the plasma was estimated to be 6.5 × 1017 atoms s−1 m−2. Azimuthal anisotropy of the fluxes of atoms leaving the plasma was taken into account, which increased the estimate of the beryllium flux by 15% compared to that in the isotropic case. With the typical ITER plasma confinement times of 3–5 s, this means that the concentration of beryllium impurities can be 2.5%–4.2% of the mean ion plasma density. Such a high content of beryllium ions in the region close to the separatrix can lead to significant sputtering of the divertor with multiply charged beryllium ions. The proposed model allows estimation of the flux of sputtered tungsten atoms into the near divertor plasma. By varying the density of the gas-plasma target and the electron temperature on the separatrix, one can reduce the tungsten impurities influx into the plasma. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]
