The linear and nonlinear oscillatory shear, extensional and combined rheology-dielectric spectroscopy of hybrid polymer nanocomposites for semiconductive applications were investigated in this study. The main focus was the influence of processing conditions on percolated poly(ethylene-butyl acrylate) (EBA) nanocomposite hybrids containing graphite nanoplatelets (GnP) and carbon black (CB). The rheological response of the samples was interpreted in terms of dispersion properties, filler distortion from processing, filler percolation, as well as the filler orientation and distribution dynamics inside the matrix. Evidence of the influence of dispersion properties was found in linear viscoelastic dynamic frequency sweeps, while the percolation of the nanocomposites was detected in nonlinearities developed in dynamic strain sweeps. Using extensional rheology, hybrid samples with better dispersion properties lead to a more pronounced strain hardening behavior, while samples with a higher volume percentage of fillers caused a drastic reduction in strain hardening. The rheo-dielectric time-dependent response showed that in the case of nanocomposites containing only GnP, the orientation dynamics leads to non-conductive samples. However, in the case of hybrids, the orientation of the GnP could be offset by the dispersing of the CB to bridge the nanoplatelets. The results were interpreted in the framework of a dual PE-BA model, where the fillers would be concentrated mainly in the BA regions. Furthermore, better dispersed hybrids obtained using mixing screws at the expense of filler distortion via extrusion processing history were emphasized through the rheo-dielectric tests.

To investigate the impact of process design factors such as number of passes, screw design and screw type, a poly(ethylene-co-acrylic acid) and a masterbatch containing 40 vol% nanocellulose were compounded using a twin-screw extruder with two different screw configurations. The 20 vol% composite pellets obtained, containing nanocellulose of different morphologies, cellulose nanofibrils and cellulose nanocrystals, were re-extruded several times to study the effect of re-extrusion. The compounded pellets were extruded into films using a singlescrew extruder. These films contained aggregates of the nanocellulose material, which was reduced in size upon re-extrusion leading to an improvement in properties of the composites. With the best combination of process factors, the Young's modulus and stress at break of the composites increased by factors of 10 and 1.6, respectively. The presence of a strong network of the cellulosic entities was observed qualitatively using melt rheology upon re-extrusion. Fibers produced by melt spinning of conductive polymer composites are attractive for several applications; the main drawback is however reduced processability at high filler concentrations. Carbon nanotubes (CNTs) are considered suitable fillers for conductive polymer composites, replacing conductive grades of carbon black (CB). In this study, the fiber‐forming properties of conductive polymer composites based on a conductive grade of CB and two masterbatches with CNT in a polyethylene matrix were investigated. The CB was also used in a polypropylene matrix for comparison. The rheological properties of the filler‐containing melts in shear and their extensional behavior were evaluated. A piston‐driven device was used to extrude the molten materials through a capillary; different capillary geometries were tested. Fibers were produced at various draw ratios, and their conductivity was determined. To assess the ultimate extensibility, a modified Rheotens method was used. The results showed that a conductive CB grade can have a lower percolation threshold and higher conductivity than a material with CNT. Conductivity decreased with increasing melt draw ratio for both types of fillers. The spinnability of the materials decreased with increasing concentration of filler material and correlations were found between spinnability and melt elasticity. © 2010 Wiley Periodicals, Inc. A premium appearance is essential for many polymeric products and for this reason surface defects associated with the manufacturing process, e.g. injection molding, are detrimental. In this study, the interest is focussed on defects arising during injection molding of such elastomermodified polymers that are often used in the automotive sector to produce interior and exterior components. In particular, defects denoted as “flow marks” or “tiger stripes” were investigated. These defects appear on the surface of the injectionmolded components, especially if long flow lengths are involved and consist of alternating glossy and dull bands. Here an attempt was made to elucidate to what extent some important rheological properties of the polymer melts influence the generation of such flow marks. Hence, the flow properties, mainly in shear; of three different grades of elastomermodified polypropylene containing mineral fillers were correlated to their propensity for defect generation. In summary, it was noted that a higher melt elasticity, as reflected in pressure losses during flow through a capillary, the degree of die swell and to some extent the dynamicmechanical behavior, leads to less severe flow marks or retards the formation of such defects. Elongational drawdown experiments also indicated a more stable flow in the case of the melt that exhibited the highest elasticity. Furthermore, subjecting the measured flow behavior to a Mooney analysis, the results obtained pointed to that wallslip in itself is not a primary cause for the appearance of the type of flow marks studied here. © 2010 Wiley Periodicals, Inc.
