In German primary schools, natural sciences and social studies are learned and taught in an integrative manner within a subject called Sachunterricht. To teach Sachunterricht in a high-quality manner, it is reasonable to assume that primary school teachers themselves require-- among other things, such as knowledge about pedagogy, teaching Sachunterricht, and the various content areas of Sachunterricht--a distinct interest, academic self-concept, and sense of belonging regarding natural and social sciences. Furthermore, they should possess a solid interdisciplinary competence that enables them to teach natural and social sciences in an integrative way. In the present study, we conducted a longitudinal survey of pre-service primary school teachers from a German university over a period of 2 years to investigate the changes in their (self-evaluated) interdisciplinary competence; the changes in their interest, academic self-concept, and sense of belonging regarding natural and social sciences; and the correlations between these constructs. Our data analysis revealed a decrease over time in participants' sense of belonging to natural and social sciences, as well as their (self-evaluated) interdisciplinary competence, while their academic self-concept in natural and social sciences remained stable. Participants' interest in social sciences decreased, while their interest in natural sciences increased. Moreover, we found varying degrees of correlation between these constructs. In summary, the results of the present study provide important insights into the professional development of pre-service primary school teachers within university-based teacher education for teaching natural and social sciences in primary school. The implications of these findings are discussed in detail at the end of this paper.

INTRODUCTION: Central serous chorioretinopathy (CSC) is a disease characterized by idiopathic serous elevation of the sensory layer of the retina in the proximity of the macula. This phenomenon predominantly manifests unilaterally, particularly in young males who exhibit increased susceptibility to stress. The optimal treatment strategy for CSC remains questionable due to a diverse range of symptoms, variable clinical courses, an overall limited understanding of CSC’s pathophysiology and a lack of consensus on classification systems. Recently, there has been growing adoption of micropulse laser therapy in CSC treatment, allowing targeted action on retinal pigment epithelium, without causing damage to nearby photoreceptors. The aim was to evaluate the use of micropulse laser therapy in chronic CSC. DESCRIPTION AND RESULTS: A 38-year-old patient with recurrent CSC in the right eye, previously treated locally with eye drops and oral medication for over a year, underwent evaluation. At the time of diagnosis, the patient exhibited a visual acuity of 0.63, intraocular pressure of 19 mmHg, and a central retinal thickness of 530 µm, as measured by optical coherence tomography (OCT). Fluorescein angiography (FA) confirmed the diagnosis, leading to the qualification for retinal micropulse laser therapy. Following the treatment, a subsequent FA test revealed improvement in the patient’s clinical condition, with a vision acuity of 1.0 and intraocular pressure reduced to 17 mmHg. Additionally, the central retinal thickness measured by OCT decreased to 299 µm. CONCLUSIONS: The use of micropulse laser therapy demonstrates the potential to achieve sustainable clinical effects in patients with recurrent CSC.

Abstract Background The aim of the study was to obtain a response to the question of whether and how physical activity (PA) among people aged 60–89 years impacts quality of life and other sociodemographic characteristics (sex, age and place of living). Methods Among 341 respondents aged 60 to 89, including 273 women (80%) and 68 men (20%) successfully completed IPAQ and WHOQOL AGE questionnaires. In the study were used International Physical Activity Questionnaire – IPAQ and World Health Organization Quality Of Life - Age – WHOQOL-AGE in Polish version. Results The average total physical activity, including vigorous-intensity physical effort, moderate-intensity physical effort and walking amounts to 1381.87 ± 1978.60 MET-min/week. The average quality of life for the whole group of older people as evaluated with WHOQOL AGE scale was 64.79 (SD = 14.76; min:18.77-max: 98.07). Abstract The structural performance of polycrystalline alloys is strongly controlled by the characteristics of individual grains and their interactions, motivating this study to understand the dynamic micromechanical response within the microstructure. Here, a high ductility single-phase ferritic steel during uniaxial deformation is explored using three-dimensional X-ray diffraction. Grains well aligned for dislocation slip are shown to possess a wide intergranular stress range, controlled by per-grain dependent hardening activity. Contrariwise, grains orientated poorly for slip have a narrow stress range. A grain neighbourhood effect is observed of statistical significance: the Schmid factor of serial adjoining grains influences the stress state of a grain of interest, whereas parallel neighbours are less influential. This phenomenon is strongest at low plastic strains, with the effect diminishing as grains rotate during plasticity to eliminate any orientation dependent load shedding. The ability of the ferrite to eliminate such neighbourhood interactions is considered key to the high ductility possessed by these materials.

Abstract Hepatocellular carcinoma (HCC) is the most common primary malignant liver tumor and a leading cause of cancer-related deaths worldwide. However, current diagnostic tools are often invasive and technically limited. In the last decade, non-invasive liquid biopsies have transformed the field of clinical oncology, showcasing the potential of various liquid-biopsy derived analytes, including extracellular vesicles (EVs), to diagnose and monitor HCC progression and metastatic spreading, serving as promising novel biomarkers. A prospective single-center cohort study including 37 HCC patients and 20 patients with non-malignant liver disease (NMLD), as a control group, was conducted. Serum EVs of both groups were analyzed before and after liver surgery. The study utilized microbead-based magnetic particle sorting and flow cytometry to detect 37 characteristic surface proteins of EVs. Furthermore, HCC patients who experienced tumor recurrence (R-HCC) within 12 months after surgery were compared to HCC patients without recurrence (NR-HCC). EVs of R-HCC patients (n = 12/20) showed significantly lower levels of CD31 compared to EVs of NR-HCC patients (p = 0.0033). EVs of NMLD-group showed significantly higher expressions of CD41b than EVs of HCC group (p = 0.0286). The study determined significant short-term changes in CD19 dynamics in EVs of the NMLD-group, with preoperative values being significantly higher than postoperative values (p = 0.0065). This finding of our pilot study suggests EVs could play a role as potential targets for the development of diagnostic and therapeutic approaches for the early and non-invasive detection of HCC recurrence. Further, more in-depth analysis of the specific EV markers are needed to corroborate their potential role as diagnostic and therapeutic targets for HCC.

Abstract Background Streptococcus pyogenes (group A streptococcus, GAS) causes a variety of diseases ranging from mild superficial infections of the throat and skin to severe invasive infections, such as necrotizing soft tissue infections (NSTIs). Tissue passage of GAS often results in mutations within the genes encoding for control of virulence (Cov)R/S two component system leading to a hyper-virulent phenotype. Dendritic cells (DCs) are innate immune sentinels specialized in antigen uptake and subsequent T cell priming. This study aimed to analyze cytokine release by DCs and other cells of monocytic origin in response to wild-type and natural covR/S mutant infections. Methods Human primary monocyte-derived (mo)DCs were used. DC maturation and release of pro-inflammatory cytokines in response to infections with wild-type and covR/S mutants were assessed via flow cytometry. Global proteome changes were assessed via mass spectrometry. As a proof-of-principle, cytokine release by human primary monocytes and macrophages was determined. Results In vitro infections of moDCs and other monocytic cells with natural GAS covR/S mutants resulted in reduced secretion of IL-8 and IL-18 as compared to wild-type infections. In contrast, moDC maturation remained unaffected. Inhibition of caspase-8 restored secretion of both molecules. Knock-out of streptolysin O in GAS strain with unaffected CovR/S even further elevated the IL-18 secretion by moDCs. Of 67 fully sequenced NSTI GAS isolates, 28 harbored mutations resulting in dysfunctional CovR/S. However, analyses of plasma IL-8 and IL-18 levels did not correlate with presence or absence of such mutations. Conclusions Our data demonstrate that strains, which harbor covR/S mutations, interfere with IL-18 and IL-8 responses in monocytic cells by utilizing the caspase-8 axis. Future experiments aim to identify the underlying mechanism and consequences for NSTI patients.

Graphene is one of the most extensively studied 2D materials, exhibiting extraordinary mechanical and electronic properties. Although many years have passed since its discovery, manipulating single graphene layers is still challenging using standard resist-based lithography techniques. Recently, it has been shown that it is possible to etch graphene directly in water-assisted processes using the so-called focused electron-beam-induced etching (FEBIE), with a spatial resolution of ten nanometers. Nanopatterning graphene with such a method in one single step and without using a physical mask or resist is a very appealing approach. ABSTRACT Transovarial transmission is the most reliable way of passing on essential nutrient-providing endosymbionts from mothers to offspring. However, not all endosymbiotic microbes follow the complex path through the female host tissues to oocytes on their own. Here, we demonstrate an unusual transmission strategy adopted by one of the endosymbionts of the planthopper Trypetimorpha occidentalis (Hemiptera: Tropiduchidae) from Bulgaria. In this species, an Acetobacteraceae endosymbiont is transmitted transovarially within deep invaginations of cellular membranes of an ancient endosymbiont Sulcia—strikingly resembling recently described plant virus transmission. However, in males, Acetobacteraceae colonizes the same bacteriocytes as Sulcia but remains unenveloped. Then, the unusual endobacterial localization of Acetobacteraceae observed in females appears to be a unique adaptation to maternal transmission. Further, the symbiont’s genomic features, including encoding essential amino acid biosynthetic pathways and its similarity to a recently described psyllid symbiont, suggest a unique combination of the ability to horizontally transmit among species and confer nutritional benefits. The close association with Acetobacteraceae symbiont correlates with the so-far-unreported level of genomic erosion of ancient nutritional symbionts of this planthopper. In Sulcia, this is reflected in substantial changes in genomic organization, reported for the first time in the symbiont renowned for its genomic stability. In Vidania, substantial gene loss resulted in one of the smallest genomes known, at 108.6 kb. Thus, the symbionts of T. occidentalis display a combination of unusual adaptations and genomic features that expand our understanding of how insect–microbe symbioses may transmit and evolve.IMPORTANCEReliable transmission across host generations is a major challenge for bacteria that associate with insects, and independently established symbionts have addressed this challenge in different ways. The facultatively endobacterial localization of Acetobacteraceae symbiont, enveloped by cells of ancient nutritional endosymbiont Sulcia in females but not males of the planthopper Trypetimorpha occidentalis, appears to be a unique adaptation to maternal transmission. Acetobacteraceae’s genomic features indicate its unusual evolutionary history, and the genomic erosion experienced by ancient nutritional symbionts demonstrates the apparent consequences of such close association. Combined, this multi-partite symbiosis expands our understanding of the diversity of strategies that insect symbioses form and some of their evolutionary consequences.

Staphylococcus aureus is a common colonizer of the skin and nares of healthy individuals, but also a major cause of severe human infections. During interaction with the host, pathogenic bacteria must adapt to a variety of adverse conditions including nutrient deprivation. In particular, they encounter severe iron limitation in the mammalian host through iron sequestration by haptoglobin and iron-binding proteins, a phenomenon called “nutritional immunity.” In most bacteria, including S. aureus, the ferric uptake regulator (Fur) is the key regulator of iron homeostasis, which primarily acts as a transcriptional repressor of genes encoding iron acquisition systems. Moreover, Fur can control the expression of trans-acting small regulatory RNAs that play an important role in the cellular iron-sparing response involving major changes in cellular metabolism under iron-limiting conditions. In S. aureus, the sRNA IsrR is controlled by Fur, and most of its predicted targets are iron-containing proteins and other proteins related to iron metabolism and iron-dependent pathways. To characterize the IsrR targetome on a genome-wide scale, we combined proteomics-based identification of potential IsrR targets using S. aureus strains either lacking or constitutively expressing IsrR with an in silico target prediction approach, thereby suggesting 21 IsrR targets, of which 19 were negatively affected by IsrR based on the observed protein patterns. These included several Fe-S cluster- and heme-containing proteins, such as TCA cycle enzymes and catalase encoded by katA. IsrR affects multiple metabolic pathways connected to the TCA cycle as well as the oxidative stress response of S. aureus and links the iron limitation response to metabolic remodeling. In contrast to the majority of target mRNAs, the IsrR-katA mRNA interaction is predicted upstream of the ribosome binding site, and further experiments including mRNA half-life measurements demonstrated that IsrR, in addition to inhibiting translation initiation, can downregulate target protein levels by affecting mRNA stability.

Niemniej na gruncie polskim wykryto lukę badawczą dotyczącą badań nad kohezją i koherencją w afazji mieszanej. Jednym z wyznaczników spójności wypowiedzi jest spójnik, który poddano analizie w wypowiedzeniach. Zaobserwowano m.in. częstsze użycie spójników w grupie kontrolnej, a z kolei najrzadsze – u osób z afazją mieszaną z komponentem ruchowym. Badania wykazały, że pacjenci z afazją mieszaną z komponentem czuciowym więcej spójników wskazujących na cel oraz relację przyczynowo-skutkową, co może oznaczać próby tworzenia zdań podrzędnych oraz chęć kontynuacji wypowiedzi. Badania wskazują na konieczność włączenia w działania terapeutyczne ćwiczeń, które pomogłyby pacjentom nauczyć się właściwego stosowania spójników w wypowiedzeniach.

Współcześnie ze względu na postępującą cyfryzację świata, internat stanowi jedno z popularniejszych źródeł porozumiewania się i zdobywania wiedzy. Takim szczególnym miejscem dla rodziców stają się rodzicielskie fora internetowe, które stanowią prężnie działającą przestrzeń do dyskusji między rodzicami, przekazującymi sobie informacje o własnych doświadczeniach rodzicielskich, w tym treściom z zakresu logopedii. W artykule zostaną przedstawione badania dotyczące analizy rodzicielskich for internetowych z zakresie dyskusji o rozwoju mowy dziecka. Obszar ten tak bogaty w informacje badawcze, stał się podstawą do poznania sposobów komunikowania się rodziców, przekazywania informacji, zadawania pytań i udzielania odpowiedzi, ich korzystny bądź niekorzystny wpływ na rozpowszechnianie wiedzy logopedycznej, jak również poznać kulturę wypowiedzi i przestrzegania zasad netykiety użytkowników korzystających z rodzicielskich forów internetowych. Zgromadzony materiał badawczy, dotyczący dyskusji opierających się na wiedzy logopedycznej na rodzicielskich forach internetowych przedstawiony został w formie cytowanych rzeczywistych wypowiedzi użytkowników, nie poddanych żadnej obróbce stylistycznej i językowej.

Abstract Seismic observations show the Earth's inner core has significant and unexplained variation in seismic attenuation with position, depth and direction. Interpreting these observations is difficult without knowledge of the visco‐ or anelastic dissipation processes active in iron under inner core conditions. Here, a previously unconsidered attenuation mechanism is observed in zinc, a low pressure analog of hcp‐iron, during small strain sinusoidal deformation experiments. The experiments were performed in a deformation‐DIA combined with X‐radiography, at seismic frequencies (∼0.003–0.1 Hz), high pressure and temperatures up to ∼80% of melting temperature. Significant dissipation (0.077 ≤ Q−1(ω) ≤ 0.488) is observed along with frequency dependent softening of zinc's Young's modulus and an extremely small activation energy for creep (⩽7 kJ mol−1). In addition, during sinusoidal deformation the original microstructure is replaced by one with a reduced dislocation density and small, uniform, grain size. This combination of behavior collectively reflects a mode of deformation called “internal stress superplasticity”; this deformation mechanism is unique to anisotropic materials and activated by cyclic loading generating large internal stresses. Here we observe a new form of internal stress superplasticity, which we name as “elastic strain mismatch superplasticity.” In it the large stresses are caused by the compressional anisotropy. If this mechanism is also active in hcp‐iron and the Earth's inner‐core it will be a contributor to inner‐core observed seismic attenuation and constrain the maximum inner‐core grain‐size to ≲10 km.

IntroductionCOVID-19 vaccines are highly effective in inducing protective immunity. While the serum antibody response to COVID-19 vaccination has been studied in depth, our knowledge of the underlying plasmablast and memory B cell (Bmem) responses is still incomplete. Here, we determined the antibody and B cell response to COVID-19 vaccination in a naïve population and contrasted it with the response to a single influenza vaccination in a primed cohort. In addition, we analyzed the antibody and B cell responses against the four endemic human coronaviruses (HCoVs).MethodsMeasurement of specific plasma IgG antibodies was combined with functional analyses of antibody-secreting plasmablasts and Bmems. SARS-CoV-2- and HCoV-specific IgG antibodies were quantified with an in-house bead-based multiplexed immunoassay.ResultsThe antibody and B cell responses to COVID-19 vaccination reflected the kinetics of a prime-boost immunization, characterized by a slow and moderate primary response and a faster and stronger secondary response. In contrast, the influenza vaccinees possessed robust immune memory for the vaccine antigens prior to vaccination, and the recall vaccination moderately boosted antibody production and Bmem responses. Antibody levels and Bmem responses waned several months after the 2nd COVID-19 vaccination, but were restored upon the 3rd vaccination. The COVID-19 vaccine-induced antibodies mainly targeted novel, non-cross-reactive S1 epitopes of the viral spike protein, while cross-reactive S2 epitopes were less immunogenic. Booster vaccination not only strongly enhanced neutralizing antibodies against an original SARS-CoV-2 strain, but also induced neutralizing antibodies against the Omicron BA.2 variant. We observed a 100% plasma antibody prevalence against the S1 subunits of HCoVs, which was not affected by vaccination.DiscussionOverall, by complementing classical serology with a functional evaluation of plasmablasts and memory B cells we provide new insights into the specificity of COVID-19 vaccine-induced antibody and B cell responses.

This research was conducted to analyse the possibility of using raw, untreated recycled tyre fibres as an effective concrete reinforcement according to circular economy principles. The aim of the article was also to develop a method for dispensing tire fibres on a real scale. Additional treatment and homogenisation of recycled steel fibres entail higher energy consumption, emissions of greenhouse gases, and increased costs. However, obtaining durable and safe concrete effectively reinforced with steel fibres is critical. Finding a balance between environmental friendliness and product durability is a circular economic challenge. Reference concrete with commercial steel fibres (15 kg/m3) and two concretes containing various quantities of non-treated, raw tyre recycled fibres (25 kg/m3 and 45 kg/m3) were industrially produced. Tests were carried out on the properties of the concrete mixture and hardened concrete, such as compressive strength, flexural strength, splitting strength, modulus of elasticity, residual flexural tensile strength, and fibre distribution in concrete. Tests revealed that increasing the amount of raw tyre fibres disturbs the structure and causes air entrainment and the formation of fibre clusters. Smaller quantities of raw tyre fibres turn out an effective concrete reinforcement. The use of non-treated tyre fibres as concrete reinforcement is possible but requires more stringent control of the concrete parameters. Implementation tests on an industrial scale are a novelty in this study, presenting an analysis of the possible dispensing of tyre fibres in a ready-mixed concrete production plant and testing the characteristics of manufactured concrete.

Selenium (Se), zinc (Zn), and copper (Cu) are known to be involved in carcinogenesis and participate in the defence against reactive oxygen species (ROS). This study aimed to evaluate the clinical utility of serum Se, Zn, and Cu concentrations and plasma total antioxidant status (TAS) in the diagnosis of colorectal cancer (CRC) and colorectal adenoma (CRA) in a population of low Se and borderline Zn status. Based on clinical examination and colonoscopy/histopathology, the patients (n = 79) were divided into three groups: colorectal cancer (n = 30), colorectal adenoma (n = 19), and controls (CONTROL, n = 30). The serum Se concentration was lower in the CRC group than in the CRA group (by 9.1%, p < 0.0001) and the CONTROL group (by 7.9%, p < 0.0001). In turn, the serum Zn concentration was decreased in the CRA group (by 17.9%, p = 0.019) when compared to the CONTROL group. Plasma TAS was lower in the CRC group (by 27.8%, p = 0.017) than in the CONTROL group. In turn, the serum Zn concentration was decreased in the CRA group when compared to the CONTROL group. Plasma TAS was lower in the CRC group than in the CONTROL group. ROC (receiver operating characteristic) curve analysis revealed that the Se level was of the highest diagnostic utility for the discrimination of the CRC group from both the CRA group (area under ROC curve (AUC) 0.958, sensitivity 84.21%, specificity 100%) and the CONTROL group (AUC 0.873, sensitivity 100%, specificity 66.67%). The Zn and TAS levels were significantly accurate in the differentiation between the groups. An individualised risk of colorectal adenoma and cancer approach could comprise Se, Zn, and TAS assays in the population.

Uncertainty is a key feature of philosophising with children. It is central to the theory and methodology of philosophical inquiry and the educational assumptions underlying it. Uncertainty also presents a specific challenge for pupils and teachers undertaking philosophical inquiry in the classroom, because mainstream education is mostly based on certainty: reduction of complexity in view of assessment, a focus on students giving the right answers, standardized skills and competencies. This paper presents empirical research, reporting the reflections of primary school children and teachers on their experiences with philosophical inquiry in the classroom. It revisits the opportunities and challenges presented by philosophising with children in mainstream education and discusses the implications for teacher education.

The character of atmospheric pollution and its impact on surface waters may vary substantially in space, and hence, we add a potentially important location for the studies of atmospheric air pollution to the map of the High Arctic. We have investigated the anthropogenic particle characteristics and selected persistent organic pollutant concentrations, in a priorly unmonitored location in the Arctic (Svalbard), exposed to a climatic gradient. Single-particle analysis of PM indicates that besides the prevailing natural aerosol particles, anthropogenic ones were present. The likely anthropogenic origin of some particles was established for spherical Fe-rich or aluminosilicate particles formed in high-temperature processes or metal-rich particles of the chemical composition corresponding to industrial products and atypical for natural minerals; soot, tar balls, and secondary sulfate were also likely of anthropogenic origin. Some of the observed anthropogenic particles could only come from remote industrial sources. POP concentrations indicated a background of LRAT, consistent with the ΣPCB concentrations and volatility profile. However, the ΣDDX composition indicating aged sources and an order of magnitude higher concentrations of both ΣDDXs and ΣHCHs than at other High Arctic monitoring stations indicate their potential source in two types of re-emission from secondary sources, i.e., from seawater and snowpack, respectively.

IntroductionTotally Implantable Venous Access Devices (TIVADs) contribute significantly to the treatment progress and comfort of patients requiring long-term therapy. However, the procedure for implanting TIVADs, as well as its very presence, may be associated with complications.AimThis study evaluates the indications, safety, and complication rates of venous port implantations in pediatric patients. It also explores factors influencing the occurrence of early and late complications post-implantation.Materials and methodsThe study included 383 pediatric patients treated at the Department of Pediatric Surgery, Traumatology, and Urology in Poznan between 2013 and 2020 who underwent 474 implantations of intravenous ports. Venous access was achieved using the Seldinger technique. Statistical analysis was performed using Statistica 13 with TIBCO and PQStat 1.8.2.156 with PQStat.ResultsVenous ports were used in 345 oncology patients requiring chemotherapy (90% of the total group) and in 38 children (10%) with non-oncology indications. There were 36 early complications (7.6%) and 18 late complications (3.8%), excluding infectious complications. The most common early, non-infectious complications included pneumothorax (15 patients; 3%) and port pocket hematoma (12 patients; 2.5%). The most common late, non-infectious complications observed were venous catheter obstruction (8 children; 1.7%) and port system leakage (5 children; 1%). Infectious complications occurred in 129 cases (27.2%). Children with a diagnosis of non-Hodgkin’s lymphoma, acute myeloid leukemia, and acute lymphoblastic leukemia had a significantly higher incidence of port infections. Venous ports equipped with a polyurethane catheter, compared to systems with a silicone catheter, functioned significantly shorter.ConclusionsThe Seldinger method of port implantation is quick, minimally invasive, and safe. The type of port, including the material of the port’s venous catheter, and the underlying disease have an impact on the durability of implantable intravenous systems. The experience of the surgeon is related to the frequency of complications associated with the procedure.

Though recent investigations have contributed substantially to our understanding of the Alpine-Dinaric radiation of the genus Zospeum Bourguignat, 1856, its southernmost member, Zospeum troglobalcanicum Absolon, 1916, has remained a taxonomic ghost. The assumed absence of type material, the insufficient original description, and the lack of new samples from its Western Balkan type locality have stymied further clarification. The recent discovery of a single syntype shell housed at the Natural History Museum Vienna now enables the first morphological assessment via 3D X-ray and SEM imaging. Based on this image data, different characters for assessing the southernmost members of the genus are determined and a lectotype is designated. Eleven allied species from 15 Western Balkan populations are described from museum material and recent sampling efforts: Z. amplioscutum Jochum & Ruthensteiner sp. nov., Z. biokovoense Jochum & Ruthensteiner sp. nov., Z. constrictum Jochum & Ruthensteiner sp. nov., Z. dubokidoense Jochum & Ruthensteiner sp. nov., Z. intermedium Jochum & Ruthensteiner sp. nov., Z. kolbae Jochum, Inäbnit, Kneubühler & Ruthensteiner sp. nov., Z. neuberti Jochum & Ruthensteiner sp. nov., Z. njegusiense Jochum & Ruthensteiner sp. nov., Z. njunjicae Jochum, Schilthuizen & Ruthensteiner sp. nov., Z. tortuosum Jochum & Ruthensteiner sp. nov. and Z. tumidum Jochum, Schilthuizen & Ruthensteiner sp. nov. One species, Z. kolbae, is described using DNA sequence data and one species, Z. simplex Inäbnit, Jochum & Neubert, 2021 for which DNA sequence data is already available, is supported by morphological data presented in this study. The DNA sequence dataset (COI, 16S and H3) is included here and implemented in the most recent phylogenetic reconstruction of the genus. A translation of Karel Absolon’s notes from the Balkan scientific expeditions is provided.

When considering the concept of the Gesamtkunstwerk in the context of the avant-garde, it seems useful to use the term transcription, borrowed from musical terminology, which denotes the development of a composition for a different instrument, voice or ensemble than originally intended. From this perspective, we can speak of a transcription of Wagner’s concept to other areas of the arts. In Polish theater studies, the notion of the Gesamtkunstwerk appears often. Usually Wagner’s concept is cited as one of many inspirations of selected artists and their artistic practices. As far as the activities of artists among the Polish theatrical avant-garde are concerned, this inspiration seems to be obvious. In this article, I attempt to show how the idea of the Gesamtkunstwerk functions in selected works of Polish artists, such as Zbigniew Pronaszko, Jerzy Grotowski and Tadeusz Kantor. These artists consciously refer to the Wagnerian idea by perceiving the work of theater art primarily as a tool of possible social change.
