A silylated melamine sponge (SMS) was prepared by two simple steps, namely, immersion and dehydration of a melamine sponge coated with methyltrichlorosilane. The silylated structure of SMS was characterized by FT-IR (Fourier-transform infrared) spectroscopy, SEM (Scanning electron microscopy) and in terms of water contact angles. Its oil-water absorption and separation capacities were measured by FT-IR and UV-visible spectrophotometry. The experimental results have shown that oligomeric silanol covalently bonds by Si-N onto the surface of melamine sponge skeletons. SMS has shown superhydrophobicity with a water contact angle exceeding 150° ± 1°, a better separation efficiency with regard to diesel oil (by 99.31% (wt/wt%) in oil-water mixture and even up to 99.99% (wt/wt%) for diesel oil in its saturated aqueous solution. Moreover, SMS inherited the intrinsic flame retardancy of the melamine sponge. In general, SMS has shown superhydrophobicity, high porosity, excellent selectivity, remarkable recyclability, and better absorption capacity for various oils and organic solvents, and a high separation efficiency for oil in saturated aqueous solutions. On the basis of quantum-chemical analysis, it has been shown that the formation of silicon carbide nanoclusters can occur due to the chemical reaction between two CH3SiCl3 molecules on the first step of the process with the subsequent reaction between CH3SiCl3 and the formed clusters, rather than due to the homolytic C–Si bond rupture in the CH3SiCl3 molecule. Cases where a chlorine atom of a CH3SiCl3 molecule interacts with one hydrogen atom of another CH3SiCl3 molecule or cluster, and three chlorine atoms of a methyltrichlorosilane molecule form a three-center complex with three hydrogen atoms of a cluster have been considered. The development of novel superhydrophobic adsorbents is highly demanded for tackling frequent oil spill accidents. Porous starch-based materials have been proven to possess good oil absorption performance, but their superhydrophobicity has not yet been reported, thus limiting their application in oil spill cleanup. Herein, a superhydrophobic starch-based adsorbent (MSC) was fabricated through the facile immersion process of starch cryogel (SC) into toluene solution of methyltrichlorosilane (MTS). Low-surface-energy and honeycomb coral-like micro/nanostructures, which contribute to high water contact angle (>151.0°) and low sliding angle (<15.0°), were provided simultaneously to SC by the hydrolysis-condensation reaction of MTS. MSC exhibited excellent water repellent, self-cleaning, and anti-fouling properties, as well as passable mechanical and chemical durability. The reasonable oil adsorption performance and selective wettability toward oil and water allowed this absorbent to be applied for heavy oil removal underwater and oil slick cleaning from the water surface. Nowadays, natural rubber (NR) is extensively applied in medical‐healthcare devices. A clogging or bacterial attachment onto product's surface can be avoided by creating the non‐fouling surface for extending the NR utilization. Herein, a superhydrophobic NR film was prepared using two‐step surface modification involving sulfuric acid (H2SO4)‐catalyzed hydration to form hydroxyl (OH) functional groups on the rubber surface followed by grafting with methyltrichlorosilane (MTCS). From X‐ray photoelectron spectroscopy analysis, the immersion of a vulcanized NR film (VNR) in 75 wt% H2SO4 solution for 1 h showed the highest area portion of OH groups on the VNR surface (50.9%), which were expected to act as the active sites for grafting with MTCS via hydrolysis and polycondenzation to obtain a VNR‐OH‐MTCS film. As a measure of the hydrophobicity, the water contact angle (WCA) of the VNR‐OH‐MTCS film prepared by using 2 wt% MTCS concentration was greatest at 155° with a high roughness of 1790 nm. The glass transition temperature and antimicrobial activity of the VNR film were not affected by these surface modifications. This indicated that the superhydrophobic VNR‐OH‐MTCS film maintained the flexibility with ability to inhibit the formation of a bacterial biofilm. Not only superhydrophobicity, the VNR‐OH‐MTCS film also had oleophilicity (oil absorption capacity [k] of 1.13) suggesting that it could be applied for oil/water separation with high separation efficiency of 98.6%. Methyltrichlorosilane (MTS) decomposition in a high‐temperature flow reactor was investigated at conditions favorable for silicon carbide (SiC) deposition in chemical vapor infiltration systems. Gas chromatography was used to determine the effects of temperature, residence time, and initial MTS‐H2‐N2 mixture composition on the gas‐phase chemistry. Four stable species were detected, including the evolution of MTS and three decomposition products: methane (CH4), trichlorosilane (SiHCl3), and silicon tetrachloride (SiCl4). The experimental data were used to assess the applicability of a recent detailed kinetic model proposed by Ge et al. for MTS decomposition. The model showed a much slower decomposition rate of MTS than that observed in experiments, requiring optimization of selected set of rate parameters. The optimized model was able to reasonably predict the experimental data for a range of parametric conditions explored. In addition, a principal component analysis–based model reduction approach was used to extract a skeletal reaction model with nearly half the number of species in the original model and with similar performance. Recovering fluorine from wet-process phosphoric acid (WPA) by the evaporation concentration method has been widely used due to its simplicity and cheapness. However, the low fluorine recovery reduces the WPA quality, which in turn has detrimental effects on fertilizer production and leads to a waste of valuable fluorine resources. In this work, a cost-effective organic liquid, methyltrichlorosilane (MTS), was first employed as the gasification reagent in the WPA concentration process to promote fluorine recovery. The effects of several important parameters including MTS dosage, initial mass of absorptive water, addition stages, stirring speed, and concentration temperature, were investigated. The first three factors emerged as pivotal determinants of the fluorine recovery and the results revealed a remarkable 87.94% recovery of fluorine from WPA, signifying a substantial enhancement compared to the recovery achieved in the absence of MTS, which amounted to 40.36%. The defluorination kinetics data was well-fitted with a second-order model, and showed an activation energy of 23.77 kJ/mol, highlighting the strong interaction between MTS and fluorine in WPA. In addition, liquid MTS could recover fluorine selectively and efficiently without compromising the quality of WPA and exhibited superior fluorine recovery when compared to traditional solid mineral reagents such as diatomite and white carbon black. Further analysis revealed the governing mechanism for fluorine recovery that the addition of MTS prevented the conversion of liquid HF and H 2 SiF 6 to solid Na 2 SiF 6 and K 2 SiF 6 , favoring SiF 4 gas production. Most thin film nanocomposite (TFN) membranes with higher permeability are related to hydrophilic nanocomposites. Nevertheless, in nature, water permeates faster in hydrophobic pores (e.g. aquaporin) because of less affinity between water and wall of the pore. Here we show hydrophobic methyltrichlorosilane (MeSiCl 3 , MTS) functionalized polyamide TFN can be used to construct highly efficient desalination membranes. The TFN membranes were synthesized through the interfacial polymerization of aqueous amine and organic MTS/acyl chloride solutions. Both the water flux and water/salt selectivity increased. The water flux increased by more than a factor of 1.96, from 2.4 to 4.7 LMH/bar, as the fraction of MTS increased from 0 to 0.1 mM in the organic solution. Importantly, the water/salt selectivity ratio increased from 11.4 to 18.5 bar−1. Thus, MeSiCl 3 imparted narrow water channels to the polyamide matrix with higher flow rate and better selectivity. The enhanced compatibility and interactions between MTS and the polyamide polymers were attributed to their covalent (Si N) and hydrogen (O...H) bonds. MTS modified TFN membranes also show high water flux and recovery ratio in the bovine serum albumin (BSA) solution. Water pollution due to oil spills has become a significant concern in recent times for the marine ecosystem. The use of oleophilic/hydrophobic sorbents for oil–water separation has gained a lot of attention as an economical and environment-friendly solution. Herein, we developed a superhydrophobic/superoleophilic cotton by silica nanoparticles (~ 800 nm) treatment followed by surface functionalization with methyltrichlorosilane (MTCS). X-ray diffraction, field emission scanning electron microscopy, energy-dispersive X-ray spectroscopy, and Fourier-transform infrared spectroscopy studies reveal that the formation of pseudo-amorphous SiO2 NPs and a C–Si–O coverage on cotton fiber render it superhydrophobic with increased surface roughness. The MTCS/SiO2-treated cotton exhibited contact angles of ~ 173 ± 2° and 0° on the water–cotton and oil–cotton interface, respectively. Moreover, the MTCS/SiO2-treated cotton demonstrated superhydrophobicity over the entire pH range, with excellent absorption capacities for various oil–water mixtures ranging from ~ 30 to 40 times its weight. Silicon carbide (SiC) layers were deposited onto alumina particles in a microwave plasma-assisted spouted bed reactor using methyltrichlorosilane (MTS) and hydrogen mixtures, in argon, as precursor gas feed. The operating parameters studied were enthalpy, gas composition, and pressure. Microwaves were guided from a generator, operating at 2.45 GHz, along a rectangular waveguide intersecting a quartz tube, acting as the reaction zone. A graphite nozzle at the bottom of the tube facilitated the spouting action. Growth rates varied from 50 to 140 μm/h. Overall results indicate that the optimal region for SiC deposition requires relatively high enthalpy (∼5 MJ/kg) and pressure (>−60 kPa) conditions, with hydrogen-to-MTS ratios ∼5:1. The quality (i.e. crystallinity, particle size, Si/C ratios) of the layers improve at these conditions, at the cost of decreased deposition rates. Characterisation was done by XRD, FTIR, XPS, SEM, TEM and EDX, which assisted in developing colour and morphological charts to indicate the changes as a function of changing operating parameters. The wetting behavior of nanofibrillated cellulose (NFC) was drastically changed from hydrophilic to superhydrophobic, achieving limited contact angle hysteresis. Remarkably, superhydrophobicity was attained for a variety of morphologies, namely dense and porous films, foams and powders, thus exploiting a wide spectrum of cellulose manifestations. The superhydrophobic behavior resulted from the combined action of hydrophobic polysiloxane nanofilaments, formed by controlled reaction of methyltrichlorosilane with water at the surface of NFC fibrils, and the NFC substrates surface morphology, established by various drying methods of the nanofibrils. In particular, the optimal conditions for polysiloxane nanofilaments growth, with identification of various regimes of coating versus nanofilaments growth, were identified. Depending on the morphology, we demonstrated that modified NFC materials can act multiple roles, such as superhydrophobic liquid-infused lubricating surfaces, filters for dodecane drops capture from a nebulized dodecane/water mixture, hydrocarbon absorption from an aqueous phase, with absorbance capacity as high as 50 gdodecane/gfoam, and beds to separate hydrocarbon/water mixture. As such, the versatile combination of two materials with nanoscale features (nanocellulose and nanofilaments), which provide multi-tier topography and unprecedented wetting characteristics, can serve for all those applications, in which liquid mixture behavior (e.g. water/hydrocarbon) needs to be controlled. Chemical Vapor Deposition (CVD) process is generally carried out in a hot wall reactor of vertical or horizontal type keeping the substrate inside the chamber on which deposition is targeted. Present study is focused to explain the role of hydrodynamics and temperature conditions on the overall coating rates inside a hot wall vertical tubular reactor. Deposition of β-Silicon Carbide crystals from Methytricholorosilane catalyzed by hydrogen is modeled here considering growth kinetics which can be successfully described – using only two steps. Finite Element Method based simulation is performed to obtain the flow and temperature profiles inside the hot wall reactor. Model equations for kinetics are derived in differential form based on mass balance considering transport of species. Kinetic parameters were approximated comparing the experimentally found coating rates as reported earlier. Present model is seen to fit reasonably well for the wide variation of gas flow rates as well as temperature. Apart from the flow rates of total fluid at inlet and initial wall temperature of reactor, sample position and the inlet diameter of the reactor are found to be key important parameters for the desired coating to take place. Model prediction thus can provide better knowledge in order to carefully choose process parameters in designing the reactor for achieving optimized deposition rates by CVD with desired properties. • Stable and corrosion-resistant superhydrophobic Ti developed for industrial applications. • Preparation included shot-peening, etching, and surface modification with Methyltrichlorosilane. • Effect of the 3-step methodology on stability and corrosion-resistance was investigated. This study employs a two-step process to fabricate a superhydrophobic surface on the titanium substrate with outstanding corrosion resistance and chemical stability. Initially, a shot-peening treatment was carried out on the titanium surface, followed by chemical etching. Once the etching process was complete, the surface was modified with Methyltrichlorosilane (MTCS) to lower its surface energy. The impact of shot peening on wettability, corrosion resistance, and long-term chemical stability of the produced superhydrophobic surfaces was then investigated. Scanning electron microscopy images demonstrated the formation of fibrous network structure in the nanoscale, and Fourier transform infrared spectroscopy analysis confirmed the existence of chemical bonds between the functional groups of MTCS and the titanium surface. Furthermore, the corrosion resistance of the superhydrophobic surface was evaluated using immersion, potentiodynamic polarization, and an electrochemical impedance spectroscopy test in a 3.5 wt% NaCl solution. The long-term stability of the fabricated coating was tested by immersing samples in a 3.5 wt% NaCl solution for various immersion times. Based on the obtained results, the pre-shot peened samples exhibited a maximum water contact angle of 159° after MTCS modification. Surface functionalization of hydrolyzed methyl-silsesquioxane films were performed by treatment of samples with trimethylchlorosilane (TMCS) and methyltrichlorosilane (MTCS) dissolved in supercritical carbon dioxide. Films thicknesses modifications, pore size distributions, hydrophobicity, dielectric constants, and chemical reaction analyses were performed by ellipsometry, ellipsometric porosimetry, goniometry, electrical measurements, and Fourier transform infrared spectroscopy, respectively. As results, the properties of the functionalized films were able to be modified in function of reaction conditions (concentration, temperature, and/or pressure). Layers thicker than a monolayer were deposited by both TMCS and MTCS, and a tradeoff between the surface functionalization and layer thickness for both chemicals was observed. A microwave plasma process operating at atmospheric pressure was developed for the synthesis of SiC nanoparticles. The process utilizes methyltrichlorosilane (MTS) as precursor, acting as both carbon and silicon source, along with an additional hydrogen feed to ensure a fully reducing reaction environment. In addition, argon served as carrier gas. The parameters studied were the H 2 :MTS molar ratio and the total enthalpy, in the range 0–10 and 70–220 MJ/kg respectively. The particles size distribution ranged from 15 to 140 nm as determined by SEM and TEM micrographs. It was found that an increase in enthalpy and a higher H 2 :MTS ratio resulted in smaller SiC particle sizes. Al-MCM-41 samples with various Si/Al ratios were prepared and then used to disproportionate methyltrichlorosilane (MTS) to produce dichlorodimethylsilane (DMCS). The catalysts were characterized by FT-IR, X-ray powder diffraction (XRD), 27Al magic angle spinning nuclear magnetic resonance (27Al MAS NMR), inductively coupled plasma atomic emission spectroscopy (ICP-AES), and N2 absorption–desorption. It reveals that all samples show the hexagonal structure of MCM-41 and exhibit large BET surface areas (over 842 m2·g−1). FT-IR spectra of pyridine adsorption demonstrates that Al-MCM-41 samples have Lewis (L) and Brønsted (B) acidic sites, and the B acidic sites are stable in the temperature ranging from 423 to 623 K. The effects of aluminum content and temperature on the disproportionation reaction were also investigated. The results show that the Al-MCM-41 with the Si/Al ratio of 15:1 exhibits an excellent activity with 100% conversion of MTS and 47% selectivity of DMCS at 623 K under atmospheric pressure. Disproportionation of methyltrichlorosilane (MTS) to produce dimethyldichlorosilane (DMCS) was firstly carried out over a bentonite from Zhejiang province (China) after H2SO4 activation. The results demonstrated that the bentonite activated with 30 wt% H2SO4 solution exhibited an excellent activity with 92% conversion of MTS and 41% yield of DMCS at 673 K under atmospheric pressure. The catalysts were characterized by inductively coupled plasma atomic emission spectroscopy (ICP-AES), X-ray powder diffraction (XRD) and N2 absorption–desorption. The acidic sites of these bentonites were studied by in situ FTIR spectra of pyridine adsorption. It revealed that the coexistence of Lewis (L) and Brønsted (B) acidic sites facilitated the formation of DMCS and reaction temperature played important roles in the disproportionation reaction. Low frequency (100 kHz) discharge in Ar-H and CHSiCl-Ar-H mixtures was studied to obtain information on the processes involved in plasma deposition of SiC:H films from CHSiCl-Ar-H plasma once the properties of Ar-H plasma are known. The plasmas were studied using optical emission spectroscopy. The addition of small amounts of nitrogen to the plasma mixtures also permitted the use of an actinometry technique. First, plasma parameters (electron density and temperature) and actinometric concentrations of atomic hydrogen in an argon-hydrogen plasma were investigated as a function of the hydrogen content in the feed. Second, the emission intensities of Si, Si, CH, H, Ar and Ar species produced in the CHSiCl-Ar-H discharge were analysed as a function of time following the introduction of CHSiCl (methyltrichlorosilane, MTCS) to the argon-hydrogen plasmas with various proportions of the feed gasses. The results reveal a rapid decay of the Si-excited state number density versus time, while those of Si and CH fell off more slowly. The emission of atomic silicon was believed to be a result of electron impact dissociative and excitation processes occurring in the bulk of the discharge, whereas the Si and CH seemed to originate mainly from products of sputtering of the growing film surface. The fragmentation of the MTCS associated with HCl formation and enhanced atomic hydrogen production as a result of HCl dissociation are proposed. Variations in the radical densities of H and CH were determined using an actinometry technique. The results indicate a significant role for H in gas-phase reactions occurring in the CHSiCl-Ar-H plasma, as well as in gas-surface interactions, leading to competition between deposition and chemical sputtering of already deposited material. Chemical vapor deposition (CVD) of SiC from methyltrichlorosilane (MTS) was studied at two different molar ratios of H2 to MTS ( n(H2)/ n(MTS)). The total pressure was kept as 100 kPa and the temperature was varied from 850 to 1 100 °C at a total residence time of 1 s. Steady-state deposition rates as functions of reactor length and of temperature, investigated at different n(H2)/ n(MTS) values, show that hydrogen exhibits strongly influences on the deposition rate. Especially, the deposition of Si co-deposit can be obtained in broader substrate length and at higher temperatures with increasing hydrogen partial pressure. Influence of hydrogen on the deposition process was also studied using gas phase composition and deposit composition analysis at various n(H2)/ n(MTS). SEM micrographs directly show the variation of surface morphologies at various n(H2)/ n(MTS). Abstract: Due to the chemical stability and flexibility, polyvinylidene fluoride (PVDF) membranes are widely used as the topcoat of architectural membrane structures, roof materials of vehicle, tent fabrics, and so on. Further modified PVDF membrane with superhydrophobic property may be even superior as the coating layer surface. The lotus flower is always considered to be a sacred plant, which can protect itself against water, dirt, and dust. The superhydrophobic surface of lotus leaf is rough, showing the micro- and nanometer scale morphology. In this work, the microreliefs of lotus leaf were mimicked using PVDF membrane and the nanometer scale peaks on the top of the microreliefs were obtained by the method of chemical vapor deposition from solution. The surface morphology of PVDF membrane was investigated by scanning electronic microscopy (SEM) and atomic force microscope (AFM). Elemental composition analysis by X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy (XPS) revealed that the material of the nanostructure of PVDF membrane was polymethylsiloxane. On the lotus-leaf-like PVDF membrane, the water contact angle and sliding angle were 155° and 4°, respectively, exhibiting superhydrophobic property. [Copyright &y& Elsevier]

• THF/IPA etching can be applied to create roughness in nanometre on acrylic. • SiO 2 -modified in the THF/IPA have been synthesized superhydrophobic surfaces. • Superhydrophobic acrylic has much transparency and water resistance than other paper. A transparent and water-resistant superhydrophobic acrylic surface was successfully fabricated via the use of tetrahydrofuran/isopropyl alcohol (THF/IPA) etching-assisted SiO 2 nanoparticles (NPs). A coating solution was prepared by mixing methyltrichlorosilane (MTCS)-modified SiO 2 nanoparticles in THF/IPA at different ratios to improve the superhydrophobicity and roughness of the acrylic surface. The acrylic was then dipped into the coating solution for 1 min under ambient air. Superhydrophobicity with a high water contact angle (>155°) and low sliding angle (<5°) was observed after modification of the acrylic surfaces. A sample prepared using a THF/IPA ratio of 50/50 showed a normalized transmittance of 88%, which was determined to be the optimum condition. Moreover, the water resistance of samples prepared using a THF/IPA ratio higher than 50/50 reached over 18,000 drops, which is a necessary requirement for transparent self-cleaning applications. Abstract: Fluid-phase equilibria, including dew points, bubble points, and critical points were measured for four binary systems composed of a chlorosilane and carbon dioxide. The measurements were carried out in a constant-composition, variable-volume cell equipped with a sapphire window, which allowed visual observation of the phases in the cell. A syringe pump was used to inject the CO2 into the cell and to control its pressure. Methyltrichlorosilane, dimethyldichlorosilane, trimethylchlorosilane, and diethyldichlorosilane up to about 0.14mol fraction were studied in this apparatus and a total of 243 phase-boundary points were obtained. Displacements in the critical point with respect to pure CO2 of up to 11.81MPa and 348.05K were observed. Modeling of the fluid-phase equilibria for three of the four binary systems was done using the Peng–Robinson equation of state, standard van der Waals mixing rules with two binary interaction parameters, and a φ–φ formulation of the equilibrium. The binary interaction parameters were obtained by fitting the model to the experimental data. The model produced excellent agreement between computed and experimental data. Graphical representations of the modeling results are presented and compared to experimental results. The results indicate that the largest chlorosilane (diethyldichlorosilane) produced the largest shift in critical pressure and critical temperature with respect to pure CO2. [Copyright &y& Elsevier]

Abstract: Isobaric vapor–liquid equilibrium (VLE) for the system methyltrichlorosilane–dimethyldichlorosilane–benzene and that of the three binary systems were measured with a new pump-ebulliometer at the pressure of 101.325kPa. These binary compositions of the equilibrium vapor were calculated according to the Q function of molar excess Gibbs energy by the indirect method and the resulted VLE data agreed well with the thermodynamic consistency. Moreover, the experimental data were correlated with the Wilson, NRTL, Margules and van Laar equations by means of the least-squares fit, the acquired optimal interaction parameters were fitted to experimental vapor–liquid equilibrium data for binary systems. The binary parameters of Wilson equation were also used to calculate the bubble point temperature and the vapor phase composition for the ternary mixtures without any additional adjustment. The predicted vapor–liquid equilibrium for the ternary system accorded well with the experimental results. The separation factor of methyltrichlorosilane against dimethyldichlorosilane in benzene was also reported. Amorphous hydrogenated silicon carbide (a-SiC:H) films have been deposited from methyltrichlorosilane (MTCS) in a 40.56 MHz PECVD reactor with an additional bias at a substrate. The substrates were crystalline silicon wafers. The as-deposited films consist of approximately 60–70 at.% Si, 20–30 at.% C, up to 8 at.% O and 0.8% Cl. The thickness of the coatings was approximately 0.2–0.4 μm. Film morphology investigations have shown that the coatings are homogeneous, and the substrate-coating zone points to the high adhesion of the coating to the substrate. From nanoindentation tests it follows that a-SiC:H coatings demonstrate the hardness up to 10 GPa and elastic modulus of 118 GPa. The samples annealed at 600 °C have higher hardness than the as-deposited films (by approx. 25%). Ball-on-plane tests have revealed that the abrasive wear resistance of the covered substrates is 1.5–4 times higher than that of the un-covered ones. So, despite the comparatively low hardness, the a-SiC:H films demonstrate good tribological properties, which make them suitable for applying as low-cost wear-resistant coatings. Mixed self-assembled monolayers of octadecyltrichlorosilane (OTS) and methyltrichlorosilane (MTS) were deposited via simple silanization procedure on a mechanically polished titanium surface. The monolayers act as molecular anchors for mixed hybrid bilayer lipid membranes (mhBLM) which were accomplished via vesicle fusion. A variation of the MTS concentration in silanization solutions significantly affects properties of mhBLMs composed of a 1,2-dioleoyl-sn-glycero-3-phosphocholine (DOPC) and cholesterol (Chol). The bilayers become less insulating following an increase of the MTS content. On the other hand, an increase of the MTS concentration provides flexibility of the mhBLM membranes necessary for the functional reconstitution of membrane proteins. The optimal molar ratio of MTS in silanization solution is 40% providing anchors for intact mhBLMs as confirmed by their specific capacitance of 0.86 μF cm−2. We found that the bilayers containing 40% (mol) of cholesterol bind cholesterol dependent pneumolysin (PLY). However, we did not observe functional reconstitution of PLY. While α-hemolysin almost fully disrupts mhBLMs assembled from 100% diphytanoyl. An important advantage of the titanium/OTS/MTS molecular anchor systems is their ability of repetitive regeneration of phospholipid bilayers without losing functional properties as demonstrated in the current study. This creates a possibility for the multiple-use phospholipid membrane biosensors which have a potential of decreasing the cost of such electrochemical/electroanalytical devices. • The effect of annealing/etching on wettability of glass surface has been reported. • A novel formation mechanism of MTCS on annealed and etched glass has been presented. • Annealing assisted etching technique can reduce the sliding angle. In this work, the glass surface was successfully modified via low-temperature annealing and wet etching techniques. Hydrophilic/superhydrophobic of the modified glass surface was then transformed after dipped with methyltrichlorosilane (MTCS). Morphology and structural properties of the samples were analyzed by scanning electron microscopy, atomic force microscopy, fourier transform infrared spectroscopy and X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy. The results exhibit that micro/nano roughness was observed on the annealed/etched glass surface. Interestingly, the wettability of the annealed and etched glass abruptly transformed to superhydrophobic with a water contact angle of 154° and a sliding angle of 3° after coating with MTCS. Annealing assisted etching technique not only plays an important role in changing of roughness in nanoscale by reducing residual and hardness but also changes the formation of polysiloxane from microspheres to nanofilaments on the surface.
