Objectives. To determine the most optimal method of cranioplasty, taking into account the functional, cosmetic effect at low economic costs. Methods. A retrospective analysis of 242 cases of cranial plates after traumatic brain injury (TBI) and strokes was performed. Number of young men predominated (82%) after TBI. Various techniques and materials for cranioplasty were used: 1. Polymethylmethacrylate - radiopaque bone cement with an antibiotic - 221 (91%) cases - with manual modeling. 2. 3D stereolithography of a polymethylmethacrylic prosthesis - 14 (6%). 3. Titanium mesh - 7 (3%). Type of attachment: CranioFix titanium clamps. Results. In cases of modern acrylic prostheses using CranioFix titanium clamps, a good functional and cosmetic result observed during bone defects closures. There were 4 complications, two of which were associated with recurrent head trauma. Conclusion. The use of polymethylacrylates with CranioFix titanium clamps for cranioplasty of the bones, taking into account the price-quality ratio is preferable to perform method of surgical intervention in patients with the consequences of traumatic brain injury and strokes. The polymerization of methacrylic monomers present in dental composite resins never reaches completion and therefore the leakage of residual monomers into the oral cavity and into biological fluids can cause local and systemic adverse effects. This work was carried out to study the in vitro biochemical interactions of urethane dimethacrylate and 1,4-butanediol dimethacrylate monomers with HL-60 cells, a cell line assumed as an experimental model for simulating granulocyte behaviour. Our main finding was that both monomers induce cell differentiation at toxic concentrations and that cytotoxicity seems to be caused by alterations of glucose metabolism arising from mitochondrial dysfunction rather than from oxidative stress, which could not be altogether verified under our experimental conditions. Our study could be considered as a useful approach to investigate the biochemical mechanisms that contribute to the cytotoxicity of methacrylate compounds and it underlines the importance of assessing such parameters for testing biocompatibility in order to promote the development of better and safer dental materials. Objectives: Methacrylic compounds such as 2-hydroxyethyl methacrylate (HEMA), triethylene glycol dimethacrylate (TEGDMA) and bisphenol A glycerolate (1 glycerol/phenol) dimethacrylate (Bis-GMA) are largely present in auto- or photopolymerizable composite resins. Since the polymerization reaction is never complete, these molecules are released into the oral cavity tissues and biological fluids where they could cause local adverse effects. The aim of this work was to verify the hypothesis that the biological effects of HEMA, TEGDMA and Bis-GMA - at a non-cytotoxic concentration - depend on the interaction with mitochondria and exert consequent alterations of energy metabolism, GSH levels and the related pathways in human promyelocytic cell line (HL-60).Methods: The biological effects of methacrylic monomers were determined by analyzing the following parameters: GSH concentration, glucose-6-phosphate dehydrogenase (G6PDH) and glutathione reductase (GR) activity, oxygen and glucose consumption and lactate production along with cell differentiation and proliferation.Results: All monomers induced both cellular differentiation and decrease in oxygen consumption. Cells treated with TEGDMA and Bis-GMA showed a significant enhancement of glucose consumption and lactate production. TEGDMA and HEMA induced GSH depletion stimulating G6PDH and GR activity.Conclusions: All the monomers under study affect the metabolism of HL-60 cells and show differentiating activity. Since alterations in cellular metabolism occurred at compound concentrations well below cytotoxic levels, the changes in energy metabolism and glutathione redox balance could be considered as potential mechanisms for inducing clinical and sub-clinical adverse effects and thus providing useful parameters when testing biocompatibility of dental materials. It has been demonstrated that human saliva contains cholesterol esterase (CE)- and pseudocholinesterase (PCE)-like hydrolase activities. While PCE has been shown to preferentially degrade triethylene glycol dimethacrylate (TEGDMA) and its derivatives, CE has a greater catalytic effect on the breakdown of bis-phenol-A-diglycidyl dimethacrylate (bisGMA) components in composite dental resins. The current study seeks to determine if there is a mutual influence between the different esterases with respect to the biodegradation of resin composite. Photopolymerized model composite resin samples (containing 60% by weight fraction of silanated barium glass filler) based on bisGMA/TEGDMA (bis) or urethane-modified bisGMA/TEGDMA/bisEMA (ubis) monomers were incubated in buffer, CE and/or PCE solutions (pH=7.0, 37°C) for 8 and 16 days. The incubation solutions were analyzed for degradation products using high-performance liquid chromatography, UV spectroscopy and mass spectrometry. In the bis system, higher amounts (p<0.05) of a bisGMA derived product, bishydroxy-propoxyphenyl-propane (bisHPPP), were detected in the combined enzyme group as compared to the sum of the two individual enzyme groups. In the ubis system, similar comparisons showed that higher levels (p<0.05) of bisHPPP were detected in the combined group at 8 days while higher amounts (p<0.05) of a bisEMA derived product, ethoxylated bis-phenol A, were detected in the combined group at 16 days. The study concluded that CE and PCE act synergistically to increase the biodegradation of both composite resin materials. [Copyright &y& Elsevier]

Impregnation of methyl methacrylate in hardened bridge deck type concrete was studied in the laboratory using a field applicable technique. Penetration as deep as 8 in. (20.3 cm) was obtained by ponding only. It was found that monomer loading was mainly determined by the amount and distribution of moisture in the concrete, and was slightly affected by ambient temperature. Due possibly to the disturbance of the capillary net-work, unequal rates of impregnation were noticed with specimens dried by different methods. The aim of our study was to define the appearance of methyl methacrylate grafts replacing resected sternum and ribs on CT and MRI and how the sternal graft may mimic an abnormally sclerotic sternum on CT images. We reviewed the CT scans of nine patients who had undergone chest wall resection (eight with malignant and one with benign disease) and reconstruction with a composite of methyl methacrylate and Marlex mesh graft. One of them had an MRI study as well. The size, shape and CT attenuation were assessed on mediastinal and bone window settings. The sternal graft was seen on mediastinal and even better on bone windows as an abnormally wide, irregularly shaped structure, somewhat denser than the normal sternum. The chest wall prosthesis replacing resected ribs was seen as a continuous dense structure and of similar attenuation as that of the sternal graft. On MRI the prosthesis appeared as a well-defined structure with no signal. Reconstruction of the chest wall with methyl methacrylate appears on CT as a diffusely dense sclerotic bone lesion not unlike a malignant lesion.
