Food consumption is frequently linked to identity and to who we are as individuals, which I explore through the analysis of the US reality television series Man V. Food. Through close readings of various scenes, I look at representations of hegemonic masculine performance (2), and the sexualisation of women and meat. In light of my analysis, I argue that the show is both post-feminist and part of a wider backlash against feminist action. Man V. Food is analysed in consideration of the wider phenomena of masculine crisis and backlash against various social movements, specifically recent feminist and vegetarian/vegan movements. This article explores the intersections between the treatment of women and that of nonhuman animals in contemporary Western patriarchal society, and is particularly interested in the gendering of food, specifically meat, as a means of establishing hegemonic male dominance in contemporary Western society. However, there is little systematic evidence on people's willingness-to-trade their own well-being and quality of life for improvements in the well-being of farm animals. In this paper, we utilize a straightforward and unobtrusive technique to mitigate socially desirability effects and gage the publics' opinion about farm animal welfare: indirect questioning. In survey of United States households, we find sharp differences between direct and indirect questions related to farm animal welfare. For example, whereas only 15.6% of the public said they think low meat prices are more important than the well-being of farm animals, 67.5% said the average American thinks low meat prices are more important than the well-being of farm animals. This finding, coupled with the extant literature on indirect questioning, suggests that people's concerns for farm animal welfare are actually much lower than what they say they are. Meat has been important to humansurvival and personal enjoyment for thousands of years, and as societies become more affluent, the amount and quality of meat consumed increases. Ancient Egyptians are known to have consumed ground meat, whereas the Greeks and Romans enjoyed various types of sausages. Ground meat has been consumed throughout the world under various names and for several centuries. How ever, in recent years, microbial meat safety has become a major concern, and it appears that meat safety challenges will persist in future years. This paper provides a brief historical account of selected developments in microbiology, meat science, and safety, and associated industrial and regulatory highlights, and a brief overview of current and future food safety issues, concerns, and challenges. Meat has become an inseparable part of human diet throughout history. Meat consumption is referred to in the Bible and in prehistoric art. Mindless animal slaughter led to the extinction of wild buffaloes by the end of 19th century, affecting the ecological balance and eventually changing the lifestyle of the Indians. Large cattle populations degrade grasslands and water resources. Historically, there has been little concern for animal rights until the 20th century. The animal conservation laws in Nazi Germany were used as an excuse to degrade the Jews.
