There is a well-established body of evidence that intergenerational bonding programs (IGPs) can improve the overall well-being of older adults and strengthen relationships and understanding between generations. There is limited literature on the experience of IGPs in an Asian context, despite many of these countries facing faster rates of population ageing than other Western countries. In Singapore, intergenerational bonding is a priority in national efforts to encourage successful ageing. This paper presents a case study of the development and implementation of a co-located (shared site) model IGP in Singapore. Drawing on interviews with key stakeholders, the aim of this case study is to present the realities of the evolution of an IGP from conceptualisation through to implementation, and used the nursing home’s COVID-19 experience to illustrate issues of sustainability affecting IGPs with vulnerable populations. The findings will inform the development and implementation of similar future programs.

Large satellite discrepancies and model biases in representing precipitation over the Southern Ocean (SO) are related directly to the region's limited surface observations of precipitation. To help address this knowledge gap, the study investigated the precipitation characteristics and rain rate retrievals over the remote SO using ship‐borne data of the Ocean Rainfall And Ice‐phase precipitation measurement Network disdrometer (OceanRAIN) and dual‐polarimetric C‐band radar (OceanPOL) aboard the Research Vessel (RV) Investigator in the Austral warm seasons of 2016–2018. Seven distinct synoptic types over the SO were analyzed based on their radar polarimetric signatures, surface precipitation phase, and rain microphysical properties. OceanRAIN observations revealed that the SO precipitation was dominated by drizzle and light rain, with small‐sized raindrops (diameter <1 mm) constituting up to 47% of total accumulation. Precipitation occurred most frequently over the warm sector of extratropical cyclones, while concentrations of large‐sized raindrops (diameter >3 mm) were prominent over synoptic types with colder and more convectively unstable environments. OceanPOL observations complement and extend the surface precipitation properties sampled by OceanRAIN, providing unique information to help characterize the variety of potential precipitation types and associated mechanisms under different synoptic conditions. Raindrop size distributions (DSD) measured with OceanRAIN over the SO were better characterized by analytical DSD forms with two‐shape parameters than single‐shape parameters currently implemented in satellite retrieval algorithms. This study also revised a rainfall retrieval algorithm for C‐band radars to reflect the large amount of small drops and provide improved radar rainfall estimates over the SO. However, large differences continue to exist among current precipitation products in the region, owing in part to the absence of high‐quality surface observational records suitable for evaluation across a range of temporal and spatial scales. This work uses two instruments aboard the RV Investigator over the Australian sector of the SO in the Austral warm seasons of 2016–2018: the OceanRAIN disdrometer and OceanPOL radar. We found variability in radar features and surface precipitation properties among seven distinct synoptic conditions over the SO. This work also discussed two important findings related to remote sensing retrievals of SO rain. First, we demonstrated why the rainfall retrieval assumptions in satellite algorithms may need to be refined to account for the unique rainfall properties in the SO. Second, we formulated a new set of equations suitable for shipborne C‐band radars in improving rain rate estimates over the region. This work leads toward more accurate, high‐resolution estimates of precipitation over the measurement‐sparse SO to better understand a range of climatological and meteorological processes in the region. Abstract Background Evidence-based practice (EBP) is imperative for ensuring patient safety. Although teaching strategies to enhance EBP knowledge and skills are recommended, recent research indicates that nurses may not be well prepared to apply EBP. A three-level hierarchy for teaching and learning evidence-based medicine is suggested, including the requirement for interactive clinical activities in EBP teaching strategies. This literature review identifies the teaching strategies for EBP knowledge and skills currently used in undergraduate nursing education. We also describe students’ and educators’ experiences with learning outcomes and barriers. Methods We conducted literature searches using Medline, Embase, CINAHL, ERIC and Academic Search Premier. Six qualitative studies and one mixed-method study met the inclusion criteria and were critically evaluated based on the Critical Appraisal Skills Programme. Using Braun and Clarke’s six phases, the seven studies were deductively and thematically analysed to discover themes. Results Four teaching strategy themes were identified, including subthemes within each theme: i.e., interactive teaching strategies; interactive and clinical integrated teaching strategies; learning outcomes; and barriers. Although four studies included a vague focus on teaching EBP principles, they all included research utilisation and interactive teaching strategies. Reported learning outcomes included enhanced analytical and critical skills and using research to ensure patient safety. Barriers included challenging collaborations, limited awareness of EBP principles and poor information literacy skills. Conclusion Four of the seven analysed studies included a vague focus on the use of EBP teaching strategies. Interactive teaching strategies are used, but primary strategies focus on searching for and critically appraising research for practice-based application. Although this review included a relatively small sample of literature, the findings indicate a need for more qualitative research investigating interactive and clinically integrated teaching strategies towards further enhancing EBP undergraduate nursing students’ knowledge and skills.

Graduate nursing students can face varied and significant stressors during their programs of study. The need for interventions to promote nursing student resiliency has been reported in the literature, by accrediting bodies, and in previous research conducted with students at the same university. Thus, the purpose of this project was to pilot a resilience course for Doctor of Nursing Practice (DNP) students. The theoretical frameworks guiding the design and implementation of the resiliency pilot program were andragogy (the science of adult learning) and rapid cycle quality improvement. The course included eleven monthly modules addressing resiliency content with written material, original videos, and online discussions and meetings. The first module overviewed the resiliency skills (Belief, Persistence, Trust, Strength, and Adaptability), five modules were dedicated to a specific resiliency skill, two modules addressed recent and anticipated challenges, two modules concentrated on the application (clinical and academic) of the resiliency skills, and the last module focused on reflection. Results of this pilot program indicate that DNP students can benefit from receiving resiliency content during their studies, especially from faculty involvement and increased peer support; however, future resiliency content may be more accepted and effective if embedded into nursing program curriculum and activities. • Providing evidence-based resiliency content can benefit graduate nursing students. • Online nursing resiliency courses can be feasible and promote connectedness. • Resiliency content may be most effective embedded in nursing program curricula. Shipborne observations from the CAPRICORN‐2018 field campaign were used to investigate the characteristics and variability of precipitation across different sectors of an extra‐tropical cyclone on 16 February 2018, over the Southern Ocean (SO). Three distinct time periods—frontal, post‐frontal, and cyclone—were identified during the day. The frontal passage recorded a total accumulation of 1.9 mm, where the precipitation phases were primarily composed of rain (96%), while the cyclone period recorded the largest precipitation (4.0 mm), where the precipitation phases varied with snow (10%), mixed‐phase (40%), and rain (50%). The BASTA radar suggests the freezing level was shallow (∼500 m) with snow present above. The cloud top heights, observed by a C‐band radar, were shallower in the cyclone period, although deeper cloud depths of ∼6 km were sporadically recorded. Increased surface fluxes and a southerly wind direction indicate that cold air advection, was likely the main cause of high precipitation during the cyclone period. A non‐precipitating multi‐layer cloud structure with a geometrically thin (200 m) homogeneous layer of supercooled liquid water (SLW) overlaying shallow boundary layer convection was seen during the post‐frontal period. The ship‐borne observations were used to evaluate Weather Research & Forecasting (WRF) simulations with different microphysics settings. We found the frontal precipitation intensity is well reproduced, but it is underestimated during the cyclone period. This study represents a unique set of observations and highlights the need for understanding how ice processes and potentially horizontal advection contribute to the development of precipitation and convection over the SO. Recent voyages of the Australian R/V Investigator across the remote Southern Ocean have provided unprecedented observations of precipitation made with both an Ocean Rainfall and Ice-Phase Precipitation Measurement Network (OceanRAIN) maritime disdrometer and a dual-polarization C-band weather radar (OceanPOL). This present study employs these observations to evaluate the Global Precipitation Measurement (GPM) Integrated Multi-satellitE Retrievals for GPM (IMERG) and the fifth major global reanalysis produced by ECMWF (ERA5) precipitation products. Working at a resolution of 60 min and 0.25° (∼25 km), light rain and drizzle are most frequently observed across the region. The IMERG product overestimated precipitation intensity when evaluated against the OceanRAIN but captured the frequency of occurrence well. Looking at the synoptic/process scale, IMERG was found to be the least accurate (overestimated intensity) under warm-frontal and high-latitude cyclone conditions, where multilayer clouds were commonly present. Under postfrontal conditions, IMERG underestimated the precipitation frequency. In comparison, ERA5's skill was more consistent across various synoptic conditions, except for high pressure conditions where the precipitation frequency (intensity) was highly overestimated (underestimated). Using the OceanPOL radar, an area-to-area analysis (fractional skill score) finds that ERA5 has greater skill than IMERG. There is little agreement in the phase classification between the OceanRAIN disdrometer, IMERG, and ERA5. The comparisons are complicated by the various assumptions for phase classification in the different datasets. Significance Statement: Our best quantitative estimates of precipitation over the remote, pristine Southern Ocean (SO) continue to suffer from a high degree of uncertainty, with large differences present among satellite-based and reanalysis products. New instrumentation on the R/V Investigator, specifically a dual-polarization C-band weather radar (OceanPOL) and a maritime disdrometer (OceanRAIN), provide unprecedented high-quality observations of precipitation across the SO that will aid in improving precipitation estimates in this region. We use these observations to evaluate the IMERG and ERA5 precipitation products. We find that, in general, IMERG overestimated precipitation intensity, but captured the frequency of occurrence well. In comparison, ERA5 was found to overestimate the frequency of precipitation. Using the OceanPOL radar, an area-to-area analysis finds that ERA5 has greater skill than IMERG. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

It is important to account for timing of puberty when studying the adolescent brain and cognition. The use of classical methods for assessing pubertal status may not be feasible in some studies, especially in male adolescents. Using data from a sample of 478 males from a longitudinal birth cohort, we describe the calculations of three independent height-based markers of pubertal timing: Age at Peak Height Velocity (APHV), Height Difference in Standard Deviations (HDSDS), and Percent Achieved of Adult Stature (PAAS). These markers correlate well with each other. In a separate cross-sectional study, we show that the PAAS marker correlates well with testosterone levels and self-reported pubertal-stage scores. We conclude by discussing key considerations for investigators when drawing upon these methods of assessing pubertal timing.

A burgeoning body of literature addresses the comorbidity of depression and OCD in adults. The purpose of this study was to extend this area of research to children and adolescents by examining the clinical correlates associated with co-occurring depressive disorders in a clinical sample of youth with OCD. Participants included children and adolescents seeking treatment at a university-based research clinic. One group was comprised of 28 children (ages 10-17 years) who met diagnostic criteria for OCD but had no comorbid depressive disorders, whereas the second group consisted of 28 children matched for age and gender who met diagnostic criteria for OCD and co-occurring depressive disorder. The two groups were compared on measures of broad-band psychopathology, internalizing problems, social difficulties, and family characteristics. As anticipated, findings revealed comorbid depression and OCD was associated with more severe internalizing problems, more extensive obsessive-compulsive symptomatology, and more social problems. Youth with comorbid depression and OCD also had higher family conflict and lower family organization compared to those with OCD and no depression. These results may have implications for the treatment of youth with comorbid OCD and depression.

The insulator–metal transition in liquid hydrogen is an important phenomenon to understand the interiors of gas giants, such as Jupiter and Saturn, as well as the physical and chemical behavior of materials at high pressures and temperatures. Here, the path toward an experimental approach is detailed based on spectrally resolved x-ray scattering, tailored to observe and characterize hydrogen metallization in dynamically compressed hydrocarbons in the regime of carbon–hydrogen phase separation. With the help of time-dependent density functional theory calculations and scattering spectra from undriven carbon samples collected at the European x-ray Free-Electron Laser Facility (EuXFEL), we demonstrate sufficient data quality for observing C–H demixing and investigating the presence of liquid metallic hydrogen in future experiments using the reprated drive laser systems at EuXFEL. Background/Aim: Fear-avoidance beliefs (FAB) is exsessive fear of movements that may lead to movement avoidance and contribute to maintenance of LBP. The aim of the study was (i) to identify the percentage of fear-avoidance beliefs (FAB) in patients with acute low back pain (ALBP) and (ii) find any association that may exist between demographic variables, pain and FAB in the sample. Design: The study is a cross sectional survey with a strategic sample. Material: 115 patients between 20 and 70 years of age with acute (less than 12 weeks) low back pain recruited from physiotherapists in outpatient clinics in Norway in the period November 2006 to February 2007. Method: A questionnaire including questions on fear-avoidance beliefs (FABQ) was used. The questionnaire has two parts with five questions about Physical Activities (FABQ-PA) and 11 questions about work related issues. The scores go from 0-6 where 6 is worst. No cutoff values are indicates in the questionnaire, the cut values in the article are quoted from other authors. The patients were also asked for demographic variables and pain. Result: 115 patients participated in the survey: 85 percent answered the FABQ-W part and 20.4 per cent of these had high scores at a cutoff >29. In total 95 per cent answered the FABQ-PA part and 32.1 per cent of these had high scores at a cutoff >14. Mean scores of FABQ-W were 18.3 (10.9) and FABQ-PA 12.3 (5.8). Patients with lowest level of education were significantly associated with high scores on FABQ-W. Conclusion: Increased pain at present (current pain) was significantly associated with high score on the FABQ-PA. Further, being on sick leave and having attained the lowest level of education were independently associated with having high FABQ-W to a significant degree.

This work examines the diurnal and seasonal variability of near-surface temperature and humidity at several large areas with high population density within the Maritime Continent using the Bureau of Meteorology Atmospheric Regional Reanalysis (BARRA) 12-km-resolution dataset that covers the period 1990–2019. The diurnal cycle is examined in detail, with a key feature being the relatively small diurnal variation of the wet-bulb temperature TWB when compared with the temperature and dewpoint temperature TD. The diurnal variability is strongly modulated by the monsoons with their increased rainfall and cloud cover. The near-surface signals associated with the Madden–Julian oscillation across the domains are relatively weak. Dry and humid temperature extremes are examined for regional and seasonal variability. The dry and moist variable extremes occur at different times of year, but each have spatially coherent structure. Significance Statement: This paper examines the climatological variations of near-surface temperature and humidity and their extremes in four locations in the "Maritime Continent." Whether a computer-aided design and computer-aided manufacture (CAD-CAM) fabricated high-translucency lithium disilicate veneer on a lithium disilicate substructure would increase the strength of the restoration compared with a traditional feldspathic porcelain veneer is unclear. The purpose of this in vitro study was to evaluate the effect of different lithium disilicate veneer application methods on a lithium disilicate substructure on their biaxial flexural stress (BFS). Lithium disilicate disks were fabricated so that when combined with the veneering disks, they had a dimension of 12×1.2 mm. Experimental groups were as follows (n=15): resin-bonded lithium disilicate veneer, lithium disilicate veneer adhesively cemented to lithium disilicate; sintered lithium disilicate veneer, lithium disilicate veneer sintered to lithium disilicate; sintered feldspathic veneer, feldspathic porcelain applied to lithium disilicate; and monolithic lithium disilicate, the control group. Weibull distribution survival analysis was used to compare the differences in the resistance to fracture after fatigue. The total number of cycles was analyzed by using 1-way ANOVA (α=.05). A finite element analysis (FEA) was also performed. The maximum principal stress (MPS) was used as the failure criterion. The sintered feldspathic veneer group had significantly lower fatigue resistance than sintered lithium disilicate veneer or resin-bonded lithium disilicate veneer (P <.05). The resin-bonded lithium disilicate veneer group showed significantly more fractured fragments than the other groups. No statistical difference was observed in the number of cycles. The lithium disilicate veneered groups presented similar resistance to fatigue as the monolithic specimens of the same overall dimensions. Higher peaks of MPS were observed for groups monolithic lithium disilicate, sintered lithium disilicate veneer, and sintered feldspathic veneer than for resin-bonded lithium disilicate veneer. Veneering a lithium disilicate substructure with a lithium disilicate veneer, bonded or sintered, increased resistance to fatigue compared with a feldspathic porcelain veneer. The persistent Southern Ocean (SO) shortwave radiation biases in climate models and reanalyses have been associated with the poor representation of clouds, precipitation, aerosols, the atmospheric boundary layer, and their intrinsic interactions. Capitalizing on shipborne observations collected during the Clouds Aerosols Precipitation Radiation and atmospheric Composition Over the Southern Ocean 2016 and 2018 field campaigns, this research investigates and characterizes cloud and precipitation processes from synoptic to micro scales. Distinct cloud and precipitation regimes are found to correspond to the seven thermodynamic clusters established using a K‐means clustering technique, while less distinctions are evident using the cyclone and (cold) front compositing methods. Cloud radar and disdrometer data reveal that light precipitation is common over the SO with higher intensities associated with cyclonic and warm frontal regions. Multiple lines of evidence suggest the presence of diverse microphysical features in several cloud regimes, including the likely dominance of ice aggregation in deep precipitating clouds. Signatures of mixed phase, and in some cases, riming were detected in shallow convective clouds away from the frontal conditions. Two of the K‐means clusters with contrasting cloud and precipitation properties are observed over the high‐latitude SO and coastal Antarctica, suggesting distinct physical processes therein. Through a single case study, in‐situ and remote‐sensing data collected by an overflight of the Southern Ocean Clouds Radiation Aerosol Transport Experimental Study were also evaluated and complement the ship‐based analysis. Plain Language Summary: The current generation of climate models and reanalyses products have difficulties in properly representing the radiative balance over the Southern Ocean (SO), which can be traced to the poor understanding of clouds and precipitation processes in this region. The remote location of the SO is a key factor for the lack of field observations that allow the scientific community to address the above‐mentioned problem. However, recent coordinated field campaigns have collected an unprecedented amount of data, offering new opportunities to explore this understudied region. This research paper aims to study clouds and precipitation processes over the SO using shipborne data collected from two field campaigns in 2016 and 2018. Using different synoptic classification techniques, we identify unique macro and micro cloud and precipitation behaviors that correspond to the various weather patterns across a wide range of latitudes. In addition, we use aircraft observations collected from an overflight to evaluate and complement our analysis of the shipborne data. The study offers a framework that may help better understand the nature of the model biases over the SO.
