Abstract

The Late Miocene Biogenic Bloom (LMBB) is a late Miocene to early Pliocene oceanographic event characterized by high accumulation rates of opal from diatoms and calcite from calcareous nannofossils and planktic foraminifera. This multi‐million year event has been recognized in sediment cores from the Pacific, Atlantic, and Indian Oceans. Based on existing studies, it is not clear whether the LMBB is a global omnipresent event, or whether it is restricted to certain regions or oceanographic environments. Moreover, the origin of this event is still widely discussed. In this study, we aim to provide a comprehensive overview of the geographical and temporal aspects of the LMBB by compiling published ocean drilling (DSDP, ODP, and IODP) records of sedimentation rates, and CaCO3, opal, and terrigenous accumulation rates that cover the late Miocene and early Pliocene interval. Our data compilation shows that manifestations of the LMBB are present in many different locations but in a very heterogeneous way. The compilation shows that the sites where the LMBB is expressed are mainly located in areas with a high productivity regime (i.e., upwelling systems). We suggest that one of the possible hypotheses to explain the onset of the LMBB could be a global increase in upwelling intensity due to an increase in wind strength or an increase in deep water formation, ramping up global thermohaline circulation. Abstract

Mechanisms that drive cyclicity in marine sediment deposits during hothouse climate periods in response to Earth's orbit variations remain debated. Orbital cycles fingerprint in the oceanographic records results from the combined effect of terrestrial (e.g., Weathering derived nutrient supply, freshwater discharge) and oceanic (e.g., productivity, oxygenation) processes, whose respective contribution remains to be clarified. Here we investigate the effect of extreme orbital configurations on the oxygenation state of the ocean using marine biogeochemistry simulations with the IPSL‐CM5A2 Earth System Model under Cenomanian‐Turonian boundary conditions. Our simulations show that small changes in ocean ventilation triggered by orbitally induced variations in deep water formation have a strong impact on the spatial distribution of dissolved oxygen. This phenomena is amplified in enclosed and already poorly oxygenated basins, such as the proto‐Atlantic ocean, where up to 50% of the water volume become anoxic for some of the configurations. Plain Language Summary: Changes in the orbit of the Earth over time are responsible for periodic perturbations of the atmosphere and ocean dynamics that are ultimately being recorded in marine sediments through the occurrence of cyclicity. Origin of these cycles in past sedimentary records is not well understood because they are the result of the interactions between different processes that all exert a control on the nature of the deposited sediments. One of these processes is the oxygenation of the ocean that controls the potential for preservation of deposited organic matter. Here we focus on how variations in ocean dynamics modulate the oxygenation of the ocean during the late Cretaceous, using paleoclimate model simulations. We find that small changes in the oceanic circulation can lead to strong loss in oxygen in some part of the ocean, such as the Central Atlantic. Our results have implication for understanding the sedimentary record, the functioning of biogeochemical cycles and feedbacks within the climate system. Abstract

The Modern Ocean is characterized by the formation of deep‐water in the North Atlantic Ocean (i.e., NADW). This feature has been attributed to the modern geography, in which the Atlantic Ocean is a large basin extending from northern polar latitudes to the Southern Ocean, the latter enabling the connection of the otherwise isolated Atlantic with the Pacific and Indian Oceans. Sedimentary data date the establishment of the NADW between the beginning of the Eocene (∼49 Ma) and the beginning of the Miocene (∼23 Ma). The objective of this study is to quantify the impact of Miocene geography (∼20 Ma) on NADW using new simulations performed with the Earth System Model IPSL‐CM5A2. We specifically focus on the closure of the Eastern Tethys Seaway (ETS), dated between 22 and 14 Ma, which allowed the connection between the Atlantic and Indian Oceans, and on the Greenland Ice Sheet, whose earliest onset remains open to discussion but for which evidence suggest a possible existence as early as the Eocene. Our results show that the closure of the ETS does not appear to impact the establishment of NADW, because waters from the Indian Ocean do not reach the NADW formation zone when the seaway is open. Conversely, the existence of an ice sheet over Greenland strengthens the formation of NADW owing to topography induced changes in wind patterns over the North Atlantic, which in turn, results in a salinification of the North Atlantic and Nordic Seas, and in an increase in deep‐water formation. Abstract

In this paper, a linear matrix inequality technique for the state estimation of discrete-time, nonlinear switched descriptor systems is developed. The considered systems are composed of linear and nonlinear parts. An observer giving a perfect unknown input decoupled state estimation is proposed. Sufficient conditions of global convergence of observers are proposed. Numerical examples are given to illustrate this method. 22. Robust fault-tolerant control for descriptor systems

Abstract

A new architecture for fault tolerant controllers is proposed for the generic class of descriptor systems. It is based on coprime factorization of nonproper systems and on the Youla parameterizatian of stabilizing controllers. Noticing that the Youla controllers include a so called residual signal, fault tolerant control is achieved. Nominal control and robust fault tolerance are addressed separately. Moreover, fault tolerant control can be improved with a scheme integrating fault diagnosis. The design of the diagnosis and fault tolerant control filters reduce to a standard [H.sub.[infinity]] -control problem of usual state-space system. Abstract

This paper deals with the detection and localization of impurities such as release agent residues and fingerprints on fiber-reinforced plastic surfaces in an inline process step. This information can be used to carry out a locally individual and controlled surface pretreatment using laser radiation in order to improve the adhesion conditions. In this paper, surfaces from polyamide 6 reinforced with glass fiber are considered. To detect the impurities, inline images of the joining surfaces are taken using a laser line triangulation system. These image data are then examined with a specially developed algorithm of digital image processing. The real-time algorithm is based on the method of material-specific threshold values. In addition to real impurities, the algorithm was validated with artificial impurities. The central result of this work is the detection and local impurities of release agent residues and fingerprints down to a detail size of 0.3 mm. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

Abstract

Marl-limestone alternations are rhythmical inter-bedded deposits that commonly occur in many sedimentological environments. It is quite well established that these lithological variations originate from astronomically-driven climatic variations paced by the Milankovitch cycles of main periods 19, 23, 41, 100 and 405 ka. However, the sedimentological mechanisms involved are not clear: some models attribute these alternations to cyclic changes in the carbonate flux, while terrigenous siliciclastic input remained relatively constant. On the opposite, other models suggest that the carbonate flux was constant while the siliciclastic flux changed cyclically, or that both fluxes varied in antiphase. To test these different scenarios, we collected marlstone and limestone samples from two sedimentary marl-limestone successions from the Middle Jurassic (Bajocian, 3 marl-limestone couplets over 3.4 m) and the Lower Cretaceous (Valanginian, 1 marl-limestone couplet over 0.9 m) of the Southern French Alps (Barles). We measured their concentrations in calcium carbonate, organic carbon, nannofossil, as well as in extraterrestrial 3He (3He ET). Carbonate contents range from 45% in marls to 86% in limestones. Importantly, the measured 3He ET concentrations of all samples remained nearly constant in the siliciclastic fractions, within uncertainties (< 20%). Our results indicate that, at the astronomical timescale, sedimentation rates were mainly controlled by large changes in the CaCO 3 net fluxes, leading to variable dilution of the terrigenous input. Nannofossil counting shows that pelagic CaCO 3 fluxes of coccolithophores are inversely correlated to the total carbonate content along the marl-limestone alternations and represent less than 7% of the total carbonate content. Hence, in this setting, these marl-limestone alternations were driven by fluctuations in micritic CaCO 3 supply and/or preservation from the nearby carbonate platform that variably diluted nannofossil and organic carbon particles. Finally, assuming a constant 3He ET flux of 100 pcc.cm−2.Ma−1, total 3He ET -derived sedimentation rates range from 20 to 30 m/Ma in the marl strata, while they reach up to 80 to 100 m/Ma in the limestone layers. These sedimentation rates are broadly compatible with local average rates estimated for the whole Bajocian and Valanginian stages by bio-cyclostratigraphy. • 3He ET – derived sedimentation rates from two Mesozoic marl-limestone sections yield a constant siliciclastic flux. • Total sedimentation rates modulated by platform CaCO 3 mud preservation, not pelagic productivity. • 3He ET sedimentation rates agree with mean bio-cyclostratigraphic estimates. Abstract

BackgroundPost-traumatic stress disorder (PTSD) is associated with elevated risk for metabolic syndrome (MetS). However, the direction of this association is not yet established, as most prior studies employed cross-sectional designs. The primary goal of this study was to evaluate bidirectional associations between PTSD and MetS using a longitudinal design.MethodA total of 1355 male and female veterans of the conflicts in Iraq and Afghanistan underwent PTSD diagnostic assessments and their biometric profiles pertaining to MetS were extracted from the electronic medical record at two time points (spanning ~2.5 years, n = 971 at time 2).ResultsThe prevalence of MetS among veterans with PTSD was just under 40% at both time points and was significantly greater than that for veterans without PTSD; the prevalence of MetS among those with PTSD was also elevated relative to age-matched population estimates. Cross-lagged panel models revealed that PTSD severity predicted subsequent increases in MetS severity (β = 0.08, p = 0.002), after controlling for initial MetS severity, but MetS did not predict later PTSD symptoms. Logistic regression results suggested that for every 10 PTSD symptoms endorsed at time 1, the odds of a subsequent MetS diagnosis increased by 56%.ConclusionsResults highlight the substantial cardiometabolic concerns of young veterans with PTSD and raise the possibility that PTSD may predispose individuals to accelerated aging, in part, manifested clinically as MetS. This demonstrates the need to identify those with PTSD at greatest risk for MetS and to develop interventions that improve both conditions. [ABSTRACT FROM PUBLISHER]

Abstract

Heterococcoliths are micron-scale calcite platelets produced by coccolithophores. They have been the most abundant and continuous fossil record over the last 215 million years (Myr), offering great potential for geochemical studies, although the heterococcolith fossil record remains underutilised in this domain. We have mapped heterococcoliths' composition using X-ray fluorescence ( XRF) with a 100-nm resolution beam to decipher element distributions in heterococcoliths and to investigate the potential development of geochemical proxies for palaeoceanography. The study presents two Middle Jurassic Watznaueria britannica heterococcoliths from Cabo Mondego, Portugal. XRF analysis was performed with a 17 keV incident energy beam at the European Synchrotron Radiation Facility ID22 NI beamline to study elements from Sr down to S. Ca, Sr and Mn are distributed following the heterococcolith crystalline arrangement. Cl, Br and S display an homogeneous distribution, whereas K, Fe, Cu, Zn and Rb are concentrated at the edges and in the central area of the heterococcoliths. Distributions of K, Fe, Ti, Fe, Cu, Zn, Rb and to a lesser extent V and Cr are highly influenced by clay contamination and peripheral diagenetic overgrowth. Mn is related to diagenetic Mn-rich Ca CO3 overgrowth on top of or between heterococcoliths shields. Cl and Br are likely to be present in heterococcoliths inside interstitial nano-domains. We assume that the cytoplasm [Cl−] and [Br−] are mediated and constant during heterococcolithogenesis. Assuming a linear correlation between cytoplasm [Cl−] and sea water [Cl−], heterococcolith Cl may have potential as a salinity proxy. As S is incorporated into heterococcoliths by sulphated polysaccharides, our study suggests a role for such polysaccharides in heterococcolithogenesis for at least 170 Myr. The low Sr/Ca in the W. britannica specimens studied here may either highlight an unusual cellular physiology of Mesozoic coccolithophores or result from low growth rates in oligotrophic environments.
