Objectives - This study aims to compare the clinical and analytical presentation of Central precocious puberty (CPP), considering age. Methods - An observational, cross-sectional study was conducted on children diagnosed with CPP at a level III hospital, between January 2002 and April 2022. Clinical, auxological, sociodemographic, laboratory, and imaging parameters were analyzed. Results - Out of the 52 children studied, the majority were girls (N=44). The median age of puberty onset in girls was 6.79 years and the mean age at first consultation of 8.13 years, with a significantly lower age at hospital referral (7.65 years; P=0.045) compared to boys. Idiopathic etiology was predominant in both. In girls, breast development appeared at older mean ages (P=0.009), while pubic hair growth and accelerated growth were associated with younger ages at puberty onset (P=0.021; P=0.018, respectively). Basal and peak levels of gonadotropin hormones were higher in girls, although not statistically significant. In girls, age at puberty onset correlated negatively with standard deviation of body mass index (P=0.023), while age at first consultation correlated positively with bone age (P<0.001), and was associated with younger ages at Gonadotropin-Releasing Hormone stimulation test (P=0.020). Conclusion - This study provides innovative and relevant findings that enhance understanding of CPP presentation according to age, thereby improving clinical management of this condition. Magneto‐ionics relies on the voltage‐driven transport of ions to modify magnetic properties. As a diffusion‐controlled mechanism, defects play a central role in determining ion motion and, hence, magneto‐ionic response. Here, the potential of ion implantation is exploited to engineer depth‐resolved defect type and density with the aim to control the magneto‐ionic behavior of Co3O4 thin films. It is demonstrated that through a single implantation process of light ions (He+) at 5 keV, the magneto‐ionic response of a nanostructured 50 nm thick Co3O4 film, in terms of rate and amount of induced magnetization, at short‐, mid‐, and long‐term voltage actuation, can be controlled by varying the generated collisional damage through the ion fluence. These results constitute a proof‐of‐principle that paves the way to further use ion implantation (tuning the ion nature, energy, fluence, target temperature, or using multiple implantations) to enhance performance in magneto‐ionic systems, with implications in ionic‐based devices. Artificial intelligence tools promise transformative impacts in drug development. Regulatory agencies face challenges in integrating AI while ensuring reliability and safety in clinical trial approvals, drug marketing authorizations, and post-market surveillance. Incorporating these technologies into the existing regulatory framework and agency practices poses notable challenges, particularly in evaluating the data and models employed for these purposes. Rapid adaptation of regulations and internal processes is essential for agencies to keep pace with innovation, though achieving this requires collective stakeholder collaboration. This article thus delves into the need for adaptations of regulations throughout the drug development lifecycle, as well as the utilization of AI within internal processes of medicine agencies. Background: Community pharmacists have become flu vaccine immunisers in several countries to increase vaccine uptake. Aim: This study aimed to perform a scoping review to evaluate the pharmacist's role and contribution to flu immunisation coverage, satisfaction and promotion as vaccine providers. Design: The framework proposed by Arksey and O'Malley and the PRISMA Extension for Scoping Reviews (PRISMA‐ScR) were considered for this analysis. Two electronic databases (PubMed and Cochrane Library) were used to search for relevant peer‐reviewed quantitative, qualitative and mixed‐method studies published between 1990 and 2022. Results: A total of 37 studies were included. These studies suggested that, over time, there was an increase in the rate of vaccine administration within community pharmacies across the various countries examined. Moreover, patients have consistently expressed their satisfaction with the convenience and accessibility of pharmacy‐based vaccine services, with some expressing a preference for pharmacies over traditional visits to their general practitioner′s office. Conclusion: Several initiatives aimed at promoting flu vaccination have been rolled out in pharmacy settings, and a number of these initiatives have demonstrated positive outcomes. The flu vaccination service provided by pharmacists has proven to be an asset in public health by improving accessibility to immunisation services. Pharmacists should continue to take part in yearly flu vaccination programs as flu vaccine providers as they contribute to an increased uptake of immunisations by the population. Since 2008 many municipalities in the European Union have taken part in the Covenant of Mayors (CoM) initiative and have developed Sustainable Energy Action Plans (SEAP) to contribute to climate change mitigation. To respond to new policy goals for 2030, the CoM has expanded its focus and since 2018 requires municipalities to cover climate adaptation actions. The main aim of this paper is to analyse the first experiences of six municipalities from Spain, Portugal and Latvia in upgrading their existing Sustainable Energy Actions Plans to Sustainable Energy and Climate Action Plans (SECAP). SECAPs were developed through a participatory process involving all relevant local stakeholders, to gain maximum understanding and acceptance. Each municipality implemented climate adaption actions to demonstrate the need for adaptation and the ways it can be accomplished.

Despite the recognized potential of nanoparticles, only a few formulations have progressed to clinical trials, and an even smaller number have been approved by the regulatory authorities and marketed. Virus-like particles (VLPs) have emerged as promising alternatives to conventional nanoparticles due to their safety, biocompatibility, immunogenicity, structural stability, scalability, and versatility. Furthermore, VLPs can be surface-functionalized with small molecules to improve circulation half-life and target specificity. Through the functionalization and coating of VLPs, it is possible to optimize the response properties to a given stimulus, such as heat, pH, an alternating magnetic field, or even enzymes. Surface functionalization can also modulate other properties, such as biocompatibility, stability, and specificity, deeming VLPs as potential vaccine candidates or delivery systems. This review aims to address the different types of surface functionalization of VLPs, highlighting the more recent cutting-edge technologies that have been explored for the design of tailored VLPs, their importance, and their consequent applicability in the medical field. Hereditary Transthyretin Amyloidosis is a rare, progressive and life-threatening systemic disease with predominant peripheral and autonomic nervous system involvement caused by mutation of the transthyretin protein. The most common TTR mutation regarding to ATTRv is a substitution of a Methionine for a Valine at position 30 that predisposes TTR to form aggregates and fibrils. S100A8 protein levels were measured in plasma samples from ATTRV30M patients and healthy donors. Additionally, S100A8/9 levels were measured in Schwann cells after incubation with human WT or V30M TTR. Moreover, bone marrow derived macrophages of either genetic background were generated and the expression of S100A8/9 was measured in response to toll like receptors agonists. S100A8/A9 mRNA levels are decreased in HSF V30M mice as compared with the WT. Moreover, S100A8 protein levels were found downregulated in plasma samples from ATTRV30M patients. Furthermore, we provide evidence for a dysregulated S100 expression by Schwann cells in response to TTRV30M and by mutated macrophages in response to toll like receptors agonists. The presence of TTRV30M impacts S100 expression, possibly contributing to the impaired immune activation of Schwann cells in nerves from ATTRV30M patients. This may be linked to the diminished immune cellular infiltration in these nerves, contributing in this way for the neuronal dysfunction present in the disease. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

Background: During the COVID-19 pandemic, community pharmacy (CP) professionals were among those who experienced the greatest risk of contracting SARS-CoV-2, which forced major adaptations. Objectives: The objectives of the study were to describe the changes implemented in CP professionals during the pandemic, understand the perception of professionals about their experience, and explore changes to remain. Methods: An observational and cross-sectional study was conducted via an online questionnaire (June–September 2020). The target population was CP professionals working in Portugal for >2 years and serving the public during the pandemic. Results: Of a total of 353 participants, 84% were female (mean age of 37.6 years), and 81% were pharmacists (mean professional experience of 12.9 years). In the management and organizational dimensions, the most mentioned changes were adaptation to legislative changes (90%), fluctuations in the treasury (82%), and reduction of working hours (46%). Only 2% resorted to simplified layoff. In the back office, there was a need to adapt stock management (93%) and purchase personal protective equipment (99%). In the front office, there was a change in service policies – wicket or conditional opening (92%), routes of the arrival of user requests (91%), and home delivery (82%). Physical changes occurred in 100% of pharmacies. The most frequently implemented procedures were the use of protection systems and PPE, articulation with hospital pharmacies for dispensing in proximity (75%), and training in this area (55%). Regarding interpersonal climate, improvements in the connection between team members are evident: increase in mutual help (57%), solidarity (54%), and group cohesion (50%); in the relationship with clients, the majority indicated the replacement of the usual user by third parties (71%), and changes in communication channels (increase in use of technological means 68%). Conclusions: Results illustrate the profound impact of the pandemic on CP professionals, both professionally and personally. The performance of photovoltaic solar cells is usually analyzed using continuous models, for instance, 1M5P. I-V and P-V curves are fitted by a mathematical expression from the electrical model. In the case of 1M5P, characteristics are fitted using five parameters that are obtained using a small number of I-V points from a wider set of data, keeping the curve shape given by the mathematical expression from the model. A novel model was recently proposed to overcome this issue. The d1MxP model is based on the discretization of the electrical behavior of the diodes in models such as 1M5P. The d1MxP methodology is equivalent to an analytical incremental calculation and since it connects the given points, the model error should be lower than the one obtained using models as 1M5P. It is based on the connection of adjacent points (with small voltage differences) instead of having the entire voltage range represented by some parameters (as the continuous models do, for instance, 1M5P). In this work, the d1MxP model is applied to perovskite solar cells and paint-type dye-sensitized solar cells. The aim is to analyze the behavior of the discrete model in different third-generation solar cells since their performance cannot be well characterized by the 1M5P model. The accuracy on the maximum power point is relevant, resulting in perovskite solar cells, an improvement of up to 2.61% and, in paint-type dye-sensitized solar cells, an increase of up to 5.03%. Purpose: Spontaneous notification systems are essential in a post‐marketing safety context. However, using this method, only about 6% of all adverse drug reactions are notified. To overcome this sub‐notification problem, new methods need to be developed to improve and facilitate reporting. In this sense, the use of digital media, mainly medical mobile apps, has been presented as a powerful tool, including in pharmacovigilance. We performed a scope review to identify the available apps used to report adverse drug reactions around the world to eventually identify which of them best fits the Portuguese pharmacovigilance system. Methods: The Joanna Briggs Institute guidelines were considered, and the framework proposed by Arksey and O'Malley was followed. All the articles that met the inclusion criteria were examined for this review. When the studies lacked in information about the app, Google was used to enhance the search for further information. Results: A final number of five articles were included, revealing seven implemented mobile apps for adverse drug reaction report (Medwatcher, VigiBIP, Yellow Card, Bijwerking, Halmed, Med Safety, and ADR PvPi). These apps are implemented in the United States, France, United Kingdom, The Netherlands, Croatia, and India. Med Safety was originally designed for multi‐region use and is implemented in 12 low and middle‐income countries. Conclusions: Apps are easier and faster ways of reporting. The integration of such a tool in an individual care plan would allow to maintain a complete electronic health record at both individual and global level and could be eventually seen as an added value by both health professionals and patients. A country specific version of the WEB‐RADR could be a solution for Portugal, in order to introduce an app to notify ADRs at the national level, due previous successful experiences in European countries. Type 1 pseudohypoaldosteronism (PHA-1) is a rare genetic syndrome of unresponsiveness to aldosterone and presents in the neonatal period with hyperkalemia, hyponatremia and metabolic acidosis. The mortality rate can be high and multidisciplinary team is needed for optimal management and adequate growth and development of these patients. Many genotype-phenotype correlations remain uncertain, and the description of the evolution of cases can increase scientific knowledge about the psychomotor development and severity of the different mutations. We report the follow-up for the last 10 years of a patient, with previously unrecognized genetic findings identified. New approaches aimed at identifying patient-specific drug targets and addressing unmet clinical needs in the framework of precision medicine are a strong motivation for researchers worldwide. As scientists learn more about proteins that drive known diseases, they are better able to design promising therapeutic approaches to target those proteins. The field of nanotechnology has been extensively explored in the past years, and nanoparticles (NPs) have emerged as promising systems for target-specific delivery of drugs. Virus-like particles (VLPs) arise as auspicious NPs due to their intrinsic properties. The lack of viral genetic material and the inability to replicate, together with tropism conservation and antigenicity characteristic of the native virus prompted extensive interest in their use as vaccines or as delivery systems for therapeutic and/or imaging agents. Owing to its simplicity and non-complex structure, one of the viruses currently under study for the construction of VLPs is the human immunodeficiency virus type 1 (HIV-1). Typically, HIV-1-based VLPs are used for antibody discovery, vaccines, diagnostic reagent development and protein-based assays. Children with speech sound disorders should attend speech and language therapy and should practice the speech exercises regularly to surpass their speech difficulties. Since doing the speech exercises often may be tedious, there is the need to motivate children to practice them. During the COVID-19 pandemic, speech and language pathologists had the need to adapt their procedures to others with less physical contact. Here, we propose two serious games to motivate children with sigmatism on doing the speech exercises, which can be used at home and during face-to-face and online speech therapy sessions. The games use automatic speech recognition to classify speech productions. Visual and auditory feedback are used to help children understand their performance, and a hint system is used to help them perform the exercises correctly. A dynamic difficulty adjustment system is used to change the level of difficulty according to the child's speech performance in previous trials. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]
