Introduction: In diaphyseal reconstructions for bone tumor resection, massive bone allografts (MBA) are historically regarded as the gold standard. However, these are not without complications, and they present an elevated risk of infection, nonunion and structural failure that increases over time as the graft remains largely avascular. To counteract this disadvantage, a combination of allograft with a vascularized fibula has been proposed. The aim of our study was to objectively review the results of combined vascularized fibula-allograft constructs compared to plain allograft reconstruction for bone defects in tumor patients and to assess fibular vitality predictive factors from imaging studies. Materials and methods: Our data was retrospectively reviewed for patients with femoral diaphysis reconstructions in the past ten years. Ten patients (six males and four females) with a mean average follow-up time of 43.80 months (range 20–83, SD 18.17) with combined graft (Group A) were included in the study. As a control group 11 patients (six males and five females) with a mean average follow-up of 56.91 months (range 7–118, SD 41.33) with a simple allograft reconstruction were analyzed (Group B). Demographic and surgical data, adjuvant therapy as well as complications were analyzed in both groups. Both groups were assessed with plain radiographs for bony fusion at the osteotomy sites. Patients in “Group A” had consecutive CT scans at 6 months and then annually to check for potential bone stock and bone density changes. We analyzed total bone density as well as incremental changes in three different areas of the reconstruction. This was done at two defined levels for each patient. Only patients with at least two consecutive CT scans were included in the study. Results: There were no statistical differences between the groups in terms of demographics, diagnosis or adjuvant therapy (p = 1.0). This article describes a set of proposed measures for characterizing areas within a virtual terrain in terms of their attributes and their relationships with other areas for incorporating game designers' intent in gameplay requirement-based terrain generation. Examples of such gameplay elements include vantage point, strongholds, chokepoints and hidden areas. Our measures are constructed on characteristics of an isovist, that is, the volume of visible space at a local area and the connectivity of areas within the terrain. The calculation of these measures is detailed, in particular we introduce two new ways to accurately and efficiently calculate the 3D isovist volume. Unlike previous research that has mainly focused on aesthetic-based terrain generation, the proposed measures address a gap in gameplay requirement-based terrain generation - the need for a flexible mechanism to automatically parameterise specified areas and their associated relationships, capturing semantic knowledge relating to high level user intent associated with specific gameplay elements within the virtual terrain. We demonstrate applications of using the measures in an evolutionary process to automatically generate terrains that include specific gameplay elements as defined by a game designer. This is significant as this shows that the measures can characterize different gameplay elements and allow gameplay elements consistent with the designers' intents to be generated and positioned in a virtual terrain without the need to specify low-level details at a model or logic level, hence leading to higher productivity and lower cost.

We present a software package for analysing body positions of a subject when they are lying or sleeping in their bed. The software is designed to interface to inexpensive sensors, such as the Microsoft Kinect, and is thus suitable for monitoring at the subjects own home, rather than a dedicated sleep lab. The system is invariant to bed clothing and levels of ambient lighting. Analysis time for a single night session is under five minutes, a significant improvement over the 30–60 min analysis time reported in the literature. The automatic generation of behavioural models for intelligent agents in military simulation and experimentation remains a challenge. Genetic Algorithms are a global optimization approach which is suitable for addressing complex problems where locating the global optimum is a difficult task. Unlike traditional optimisation techniques such as hill-climbing or derivatives-based methods, Genetic Algorithms are robust for addressing highly multi-modal and discontinuous search landscapes. In this paper, we outline a simheuristic GA-based approach for automatic generation of finite state machine based behavioural models of intelligent agents, where the aim is the identification of novel combat tactics. Rather than evolving states, the proposed approach evolves a sequence of transitions. We also discuss workable starting points for the use of Genetic Algorithms for such scenarios, shedding some light on the associated design and implementation difficulties. We present extensive photometric and spectroscopic observations of the nearby Type Ia supernova (SN) 2023wrk at a distance of about 40 Mpc. The earliest detection of this SN can be traced back to a few hours after the explosion. Within the first few days, the light curve shows a bump feature, while the B − V color is blue and remains nearly constant. The overall spectral evolution is similar to that of an SN 1991T/SN 1999aa-like SN Ia, while the C ii λ 6580 absorption line appears to be unusually strong in the first spectrum taken at t ≈ −15.4 days after the maximum light. This carbon feature disappears quickly in subsequent evolution but it reappears at around the time of peak brightness. The complex evolution of the carbon line and the possible detection of Ni iii absorption around 4700 Å and 5300 Å in the earliest spectra indicate macroscopic mixing of fuel and ash. The strong carbon lines are likely related to the collision of SN ejecta with unbound carbon, consistent with the predictions of pulsational delayed-detonation or carbon-rich circumstellar-matter interaction models. Among those carbon-rich SNe Ia with strong C ii λ 6580 absorption at very early times, the line-strength ratio of C ii to Si ii and the B − V color evolution are found to exhibit large diversity, which may be attributed to different properties of unbound carbon and outward-mixing ^56 Ni.

V907 Scorpii is a unique triple system in which the inner binary component has been reported to have switched on and off eclipses several times in modern history. In spite of its peculiarity, observational data on this system are surprisingly scarce. Here we make use of the recent Transiting Exoplanet Survey Satellite observations, as well as our own photometric and spectroscopic data, to expand the overall data set and study the V907 Sco system in more detail. Our analysis provides both new and improved values for several of its fundamental parameters: (i) the masses of the stars in the eclipsing binary are 2.74 ± 0.02 M _⊙ and 2.56 ± 0.02 M _⊙ ; and (ii) the third component is a solar-type star with mass ${1.06}_{-0.10}^{+0.11}$ M _⊙ (90% C.L.), orbiting the binary on an elongated orbit with an eccentricity of 0.47 ± 0.02 and a period of 142.01 ± 0.05 days. The intermittent intervals of time when eclipses of the inner binary are switched on and off are caused by a mutual $26\buildrel{\circ}\over{.} {2}_{-2.2}^{+2.6}$ inclination of the inner- and outer-orbit planes, and a favorable inclination of about 71° of the total angular momentum of the system. The nodal precession period is ${P}_{\nu }={63.5}_{-2.6}^{+3.3}$ yr. The inner binary will remain eclipsing for another ≃26 yr, offering an opportunity to significantly improve the parameters of the model. This is especially true during the next decade when the inner-orbit inclination will increase to nearly 90°. Further spectroscopic observations are also desirable, as they can help to improve constraints on the system’s orbital architecture and its physical parameters.
