1. Teachers' Professional Development through the Education Practicum: A Proposal for University-School Collaboration

Abstract

In this article we present the results of an investigation carried out in the 2019/2020 academic year whose objective was to understand how an inclusive and reflective practicum model can improve in teaching professional development as well as initial teacher training, in which the university, teaching practice students and school teachers all actively participated. For this investigation we have carried out a case study in which 2 schools of infant and primary education participated. This included a total of 9 teachers, 5 students of Primary Education Teaching and 2 research professors from the University. The data of the 3 discussion groups that were carried out with all the participants were analysed like so the practicum summaries of the students. The main results show the importance of schools with inclusive methodologies favour initial teacher training to have the theory-practice connection along with the improvement of personal and professional development.

3. Teachers of Learners with ASD in Mainstream Schools and Classrooms in Spain: Attitudes towards Inclusive Education

Abstract

This study analyses the attitudes of teachers in Spain towards the inclusion of learners with autism spectrum disorder in mainstream education settings and their relationship with the perceived benefits of inclusion. The ex post facto prospective design included 180 teachers from 14 schools. Data were collected using a questionnaire on teachers' attitudes towards inclusive education and a second questionnaire on the benefits of inclusion developed for the specific purposes of this study. The results show teachers' positive attitudes towards inclusion as well as the benefits perceived. This study demonstrates the fundamental role of teachers' previous experience. Implications for inclusive cultures and practices in schools are discussed.

10. Students with Special Educational Needs and Cooperative Learning in the Ordinary Classroom: Some Learnings from Teaching Practice

Abstract

This article presents the results of a study to determine the strategies used by teachers to include students with special educational needs in regular classrooms, primarily using Cooperative Learning strategies. It aims to identify the factors of inclusive learning in order to enhance the participation and learning of all students in the classroom and in their cooperative teams. A qualitative case study was carried out in the context of the teachers participating in a postgraduate course 'expert in cooperative learning' offered by the University of Alcalá (Spain), over a period of six years (2011-2017), involving the participation of 176 professional teachers. All the participants attended an annual university continuous training course on cooperative learning. Document analysis, in-depth interviews and a questionnaire designed "ad hoc" were used. The conclusions include the importance of cooperative work in facilitating inclusive education, with a variety of different strategies used to respond to all students' needs, and those with special educational needs in particular, and the coordination required between teachers and special educational needs specialists to implement those strategies.

11. Classroom Instruction and Practices That Reach All Learners

Abstract

The research was designed to observe, describe and analyse elements of instruction and practice that define classrooms designed to reach all learners in a context of full inclusion. The authors' focus has been the underlying daily practices of classroom teachers used to ensure high-quality, equitable and personalised instruction. A multiple-case-study approach was carried out, with the voluntary participation of seven schools at the kindergarten, elementary and high-school levels. Multiple data collection methods were utilised, including in-depth interviews and extended classroom observation. The results reveal the foundational practices of the school and classroom that make it possible to reach all learners, facilitating their success. The systemic supports and strategies that ensure that all learners are able to participate, learn and be part of the class community are also described, as well as complexities still present in the inclusion processes, especially in relation to support and curriculum.

12. Specific and Optional Curriculum: An Experience in the Undergraduate Program of Chemical Engineering in Cienfuegos University, Cuba

Abstract

This paper pursues to define the pillars for designing the specific (SC) and optional curricula (OC) of Unit Operations and Processes (UOP) Discipline in the Chemical Engineering Program. To achieve this objective a methodology was developed, which was characterized by the participation of every member in the educational process: professors, experts of industrial sector and students. The joint work made it possible to carry out a variety of tasks: the characterization of regional industries according to the academic requests of the UOP discipline, the identification of deficiencies in the basic curriculum (BC), the needs of industries in environmental matters and the students´ preferences in their optional professional formation. The result of this qualitative study expressed a high convergence of all the variables under study. The importance of arranging SC and OC was validated, among other important alternatives, towards environmental technologies. These subjects combine important contents in the academic order with significant contributions to solve imperative problems of the territory. The significance of taking into account the strategic matters associated with Biotechnology, Petroleum Technology, and Food Technologies, key subjects for indispensable development of our regional context, was also recognized.

14. Teacher Education in Cooperative Learning and Its Influence on Inclusive Education

Abstract

This article presents the study of the perception of teachers and principals participating in a teacher training program about cooperative learning with the focus on the transformation of teaching practices for inclusive education. The aim is to analyze the effect of a teacher training program on teaching practices and school transformation. We carried out an exploratory case study involving eight public schools of the Community of Madrid. Twenty-nine teachers (including principals) and two counselors agreed to participate. The process involved discussion groups, in-depth interviews, questionnaires about the training received, and analysis of documents (reports, stories, and projects). The results found that there is a positive influence on how students live together, their learning, emotional intelligence, and social relationships.

15. Planning for All Students: Promoting Inclusive Instruction

Abstract

In this paper, we will analyze the inclusive education policies and practices of a Province in Canada. Qualitative methods were used to analyze the planning of teaching and learning for students, with a focus on those with a Personalized Learning Plan (PLP). The process involved extended school and classroom observation, completion of questionnaires and analysis of documents, including lesson plans, individual student records, and PLPs of specific students. An observation grid and questionnaires were designed ad hoc. This province was an early adopter of an inclusive educational model. Schools in the province have a long tradition of developing accommodations for individual students in a 'common learning environment'. In this article, we analyze learning and curriculum planning and its influence on the development of inclusive practices in the classroom. We found that teachers continue to struggle to develop effective individual learning plans. Our analysis leads us to suggest a model for teachers to conceptualise appropriate strategies and accommodations for students in their daily lesson plans.

Abstract

Introduction: Brazil is a signatory of important documents that advocate the promotion and access to equitable, inclusive, and quality education. However, the construction of inclusive policies, practices, and cultures has been little discussed in the country, making the process of educational inclusion of children with specific educational needs difficult. Method: In this study, we used the Index for Inclusion to investigate children's perceptions considering the three things they like most about their school and the three things they dislike. Data was analyzed qualitatively through content analysis, using prefixed categories created according to the children's answers to the Index (strengths and weaknesses), categorized considering the dimensions and subdimensions assessed by the Index. Results: The results revealed that children perceive the infrastructural and urban barriers present in their context, which are considered weaknesses for developing inclusive policies, practices, and cultures in their school contexts. On the other hand, they do not show attitudinal barriers, that is, they do not judge others for their differences. Discussion: Working on differences, from the first school stage, to build a positive relationship between children and the development of practices and an inclusive school can benefit the construction of a school community free of segregating values present in our culture, contributing to the development of inclusive policies, practices, and cultures in school environments. Abstract

Spanish universities still face many barriers to the training of people with disabilities, especially with intellectual disabilities (ID). In general, continuing higher education courses are the main training response for the latter. Knowing the impact that confinement by COVID-19 has had on the students of these courses is a relevant element. The present investigation focused on analyzing the case of the confinement experience of 12 young students with ID who attended the continuing training program called Unidiversidad at the University of Alcalá (Spain). In particular, the implications on their emotional well-being, interpersonal relationships, and individual training were analyzed. Information was collected through a semi-structured interview with the students and a questionnaire with their relatives. The results reflect changes in emotional well-being linked to the increased concern of students for the health of their families. Interpersonal relationships were also affected, although participants tried to compensate for the lack of face-to-face interaction with instant messaging applications and video calls. The change in training to the online modality generated concern and uncertainty in students, although it also provided learning opportunities, which have been supported by peer tutoring and support from teachers. Abstract

After an ischemic stroke, various harmful mechanisms contribute to tissue damage, including the inflammatory response. The increase in pro-inflammatory cytokines has been related to greater damage to the neural tissue and the promotion of neurological alterations, including cognitive impairment. Recent research has shown that the use of prebiotics and/or probiotics counteracts inflammation and improves cognitive function through the production of growth factors, such as brain-derived neurotrophic factor (BDNF), by reducing inflammatory molecules. Therefore, in this study, the effect of the symbiotic inulin and Enterococcus faecium on neuroprotection and memory improvement was evaluated in a rat model of transient middle cerebral artery occlusion (tMCAO). In order to accomplish this, the animals were subjected to ischemia; the experimental group was supplemented with the symbiotic and the control group with the vehicle. The neurological deficit as well as spatial and working memory were evaluated using the Zea Longa scale, Morris water maze, and the eight-arm maze tests, respectively. Infarct size, the levels of BDNF, and tumor necrosis factor-alpha (TNF-α) were also assessed. The results show that supplementation with the symbiotic significantly diminished the neurological deficit and infarct size, improved memory and learning, increased BDNF expression, and reduced TNF-α production. These findings provide new evidence about the therapeutic use of symbiotics for ischemic stroke and open up the possibilities for the design of further studies. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

Abstract

This study analyses the attitudes of teachers in Spain towards the inclusion of learners with autism spectrum disorder in mainstream education settings and their relationship with the perceived benefits of inclusion. The ex post facto prospective design included 180 teachers from 14 schools. Data were collected using a questionnaire on teachers' attitudes towards inclusive education and a second questionnaire on the benefits of inclusion developed for the specific purposes of this study. The results show teachers' positive attitudes towards inclusion as well as the benefits perceived. This study demonstrates the fundamental role of teachers' previous experience. Abstract

Simple Summary: There are contradictory data about coronavirus disease (COVID-19) in patients with hematological malignancies. In this population-based study we evaluated severity and survival of unvaccinated patients with hematological malignancies (HM) and COVID-19 in the Madrid region, Spain, between early February 2020 and February 2021. Also, a comparison was made with non-cancer patients from the SEMI-COVID registry and post COVID-19 conditions were evaluated. Overall, 30-day mortality was 32.7%, with higher mortality among certain groups of patients (aged ≥ 60 years, presence of ≥ 3 comorbidities, diagnosis of AML/ALL, treatment with conventional chemotherapy within 30 days of COVID-19 diagnosis, recipients of systemic corticosteroids as COVID-19 therapy). Mortality rates were similar between earlier and later phases of the pandemic, not paralleling the reduction of mortality in non-cancer patients. Up to 27.3% patients had a post COVID-19 condition. These findings will be useful to understand COVID-19 morbidity and mortality in unvaccinated patients diagnosed with HM. Mortality rates for COVID-19 have declined over time in the general population, but data in patients with hematologic malignancies are contradictory. We identified independent prognostic factors for COVID-19 severity and survival in unvaccinated patients with hematologic malignancies, compared mortality rates over time and versus non-cancer inpatients, and investigated post COVID-19 condition. Data were analyzed from 1166 consecutive, eligible patients with hematologic malignancies from the population-based HEMATO-MADRID registry, Spain, with COVID-19 prior to vaccination roll-out, stratified into early (February–June 2020; n = 769 (66%)) and later (July 2020–February 2021; n = 397 (34%)) cohorts. Propensity-score matched non-cancer patients were identified from the SEMI-COVID registry. A lower proportion of patients were hospitalized in the later waves (54.2%) compared to the earlier (88.6%), OR 0.15, 95%CI 0.11–0.20. The proportion of hospitalized patients admitted to the ICU was higher in the later cohort (103/215, 47.9%) compared with the early cohort (170/681, 25.0%, 2.77; 2.01–3.82). The reduced 30-day mortality between early and later cohorts of non-cancer inpatients (29.6% vs. 12.6%, OR 0.34; 0.22–0.53) was not paralleled in inpatients with hematologic malignancies (32.3% vs. 34.8%, OR 1.12; 0.81–1.5). Among evaluable patients, 27.3% had post COVID-19 condition. Abstract

Background: Humans are very susceptible to the poison of insects. Some animals can produce substances that cause allergic reactions in humans. In these conditions, the immune system responds through mechanisms that provoke a state of defense in the affected person to fight against the aggression. In many cases, this defense is very strong to the organism itself. Methods: The topic: "hypersensitivity due to stings of insects (bees and wasps)" was reviewed by keywords of articles included in the Google Scholar, Web of Science, and PubMed databases. The articles were selected by their relevance. Recently published articles in peer-reviewed journals were included, conducting a detailed review of all contents. Results: The review indicated that the hypersensitivity mechanisms produced by bee and wasp stings are mainly mediated by IgE's antibodies. In addition, the crucial importance of a rapid response to the first symptoms of hypersensitivity to prevent the venom severe symptoms leading to the patient's death is emphasized. Conclusions: The current knowledge of hypersensitivity reactions in individuals susceptible to bee and wasp stings was reviewed and summarized, revealing that IgE-mediated allergic reactions are the main mechanism.
