Student employment is a common co‐curricular activity among undergraduate students. Previous studies have primarily focused on the impact of employment on academic outcomes and post‐graduation labor market success. Although there is an assumption that on‐campus student employment influences leadership learning, there is a lack of research directly exploring this topic. Therefore, this study explores how on‐campus student employment influences leadership capacity development in undergraduate students who worked in a department in Student Affairs. In this article the author presents his reflection on the framing of mass queer television as a technology within the cultural politics of gender and sexuality; and, next, discusses the mass production of these representations in terms of the mass production of modes of intelligibility of LGBT subjects. Around 300 BC, Euclid wrote "The Elements", a major treatise on the geometry of the time, and what would be considered "geometry" for many years after. Arguably "The Elements" is the second most read book of the western world, falling short only to The Bible. In his book, Euclid states five postulates of geometry which he uses as the foundation for all his proofs. It is from these postulates we get the term Euclidean geometry, for in these Euclid strove to define what constitutes "flat-surface" geometry. These postulates are: (1) [It is possible] to draw a straight line from any point to any other; (2) [It is possible] to produce a finite straight line continuously in a straight line; (3) [It is possible] to describe a circle with any centre and distance [radius]; (4) That all right angles are equal to each other; and (5) That, if a straight line falling on two straight lines makes the interior angles on the same side less than two right angles, the two lines, if produced indefinitely, meet on that side on which the angles are less than the two right angles.

This article reflects on historical homophobia within educational practice and administration as an effort to consider how we might promote dialogue around the queer past of schooling. Along the way, it provides some discussion of the significance of archival knowledge in helping us to develop an understanding of the past while also providing resources for making sense of the contemporary moment. To develop my argument, I illustrate some examples of historical homophobia, through a brief discussion of some education administration practices in Australia, I then move on to briefly consider some of the implications of historical homophobia, and its effects in relation to educational research, practice and administration today. In the final section of the paper, I discuss some of the ways in which we might address the queer past of education through a cultural politics of queer reparation.

Through an analysis of gay protest music (1975) and an educational kit for students (1978), both sponsored by the Campaign for Homosexual Equality in the UK, this paper brings into focus a history of gay rights activists' efforts to marshal popular culture in the development of informal sex education for young people in the second half of the 1970s. Through a reparative critique of prevailing therapeutic research methodologies, and through a theoretical deployment of notions of methodological reconciliation and queer breeding, it makes the case for the importance of historical methods in contemporary sex education research.

Introduction: MicroCT of the three-dimensional fascicular organization of the human vagus nerve provides essential data to inform basic anatomy as well as the development and optimization of neuromodulation therapies. To process the images into usable formats for subsequent analysis and computational modeling, the fascicles must be segmented. Prior segmentations were completed manually due to the complex nature of the images, including variable contrast between tissue types and staining artifacts. Methods: Here, we developed a U-Net convolutional neural network (CNN) to automate segmentation of fascicles in microCT of human vagus nerve. Results: The U-Net segmentation of ~500 images spanning one cervical vagus nerve was completed in 24 s, versus ~40 h for manual segmentation, i.e., nearly four orders of magnitude faster. The automated segmentations had a Dice coefficient of 0.87, a measure of pixel-wise accuracy, thus suggesting a rapid and accurate segmentation. While Dice coefficients are a commonly used metric to assess segmentation performance, we also adapted a metric to assess fasciclewise detection accuracy, which showed that our network accurately detects the majority of fascicles, but may under-detect smaller fascicles. Discussion: This network and the associated performance metrics set a benchmark, using a standard U-Net CNN, for the application of deep-learning algorithms to segment fascicles from microCT images. The process may be further optimized by refining tissue staining methods, modifying network architecture, and expanding the ground-truth training data. The resulting three-dimensional segmentations of the human vagus nerve will provide unprecedented accuracy to define nerve morphology in computational models for the analysis and design of neuromodulation therapies. During the 1979 Victorian state election, fundamentalist Christian groups such as the Citizens Against Social Evil launched a public campaign against the inclusion of homosexual content in secondary school education. And, on March 19, 1979, the Minister of Education's office sent out an order to all secondary school principals directing them "to ensure that copies of books seeking to foster homosexual behaviour are not available to children". Thirty years later, and at another Victorian state election, people see a different Minister of Education campaigning on an agenda that includes an increased focus on, and support for, sexual and gender diversity in education. This historical contrast raises a number of key questions too large for full discussion, including how can one describe the history of developments in ideas about sexuality and education in Victoria? What dominant ways of knowing sexuality and education have emerged through this history? And, what have been the implications of these emergent knowledges and their attendant practices on the contemporary conjunction of sexuality and education? In order to begin exploring these large and complex questions from the perspective of a more confined set of interests, the author reflects on the disciplinary basis of the contemporary teaching of sex and sexualities in Victorian schools. In particular, he argues for an interdisciplinary approach to the teaching of sex and sexualities education which foregrounds historical curriculum content and he uses this argument as a way to speak to broader questions that are raised by the shifts in sex and sexualities education since 1979. This article offers a joint reading of two cultural texts that reflect the contest over victim-oriented characterizations of queer youth in contemporary culture. The first text is a representation of queer youth taken from the popular UK television series "Shameless" (2004). The second text is an online discussion about representations of gay and lesbian characters on television that was recently posted on the "Queer Youth Network" website. Through my reading of these two texts, I explore the rise of explicit mainstream representations of gay and lesbian characters and the emergence of an identifiable queer youth audience as key characteristics of the contemporary "after-queer" moment. Through a reflection on the queer youth analytical techniques observable on the "Queer Youth Network" site, I conclude by outlining some key implications for future educational research in the field of youth, sexuality and popular culture. Strengths-based approaches to research with military-connected children (MCC) are sparse and their voices are rarely given the equivalent weight and influence compared to the voices of adults. Recreational camps can promote positive outcomes, and this paper draws on qualitative participatory methods exploring MCCs perceptions of a one-week recreational camp. It revealed three key interrelated themes about MCCs experience: (1) relationships; (2) age; and (3) organization and scheduling. The findings support the potential of recreational camps to improve outcomes for MCC and the importance of including children's voices in the process. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

Association mapping currently relies on the identification of genetic markers. Several technologies have been adopted for genetic marker analysis, with single nucleotide polymorphisms (SNPs) being the most popular where a reasonable quantity of genome sequence data are available. We describe several tools we have developed for the discovery, annotation, and visualization of molecular markers for association mapping. These include autoSNPdb for SNP discovery from assembled sequence data; TAGdb for the identification of gene specific paired read Illumina GAII data; CMap3D for the comparison of mapped genetic and physical markers; and BAC and Gene Annotator for the online annotation of genes and genomic sequences. Results show that Ru(sub)3(C))(sub)12 catalyzes the coupling reaction of aromatic C-H bonds present in phenyloxazolines, carbon monoxide, and olefins. Data indicate that an oxazoline ring is effective in directing carbonylation at a C-H bond in terms of site selectivity, like benzene ring, and reactivity.

Research was conducted to examine a one-step method for the preparation of heterobenzylic sulfonium salts derived from furan, thiophene and pyrrole. The novel sulfonium salts go through palladium-catalyzed cross-coupling with different organostannanes, organozinc halides and organobronic acids, in contrast to their corresponding halides. Results indicate that triphenyl phosphite, an effective supporting ligand that is not readily akylated, was uniquely effective as ligand in heterobenzylic cross-couplings.

Objective: It is increasingly recognized that patient safety requires heterogeneous insights from a range of stakeholders, yet incident reporting systems in health care still primarily rely on staff perspectives. This paper examines the potential of combining insights from patient complaints and staff incident reports for a more comprehensive understanding of the causes and severity of harm. Methods: Using five years of patient complaints and staff incident reporting data at a large multi-site hospital in London (in the United Kingdom), this study conducted retrospective patient-level data linkage to identify overlapping reports. Using a combination of quantitative coding and in-depth qualitative analysis, we then compared level of harm reported, identified descriptions of adjacent events missed by the other party and examined combined narratives of mutually identified events. Results: Incidents where complaints and incident reports overlapped (n = 446, reported in 7.6%' of all complaints and 0.6% of all incident reports) represented a small but critical area of investigation, with significantly higher rates of Serious Incidents and severe harm. Linked complaints described greater harm from safety incidents in 60% of cases, reported many surrounding safety events missed by staff (n = 582), and provided contesting stories of why problems occurred in 46% cases, and complementary accounts in 26% cases. Conclusions: This study demonstrates the value of using patient complaints to supplement, test, and challenge staff reports, including to provide greater insight on the many potential factors that may give rise to unsafe care. Accordingly, we propose that a more holistic analysis of critical safety incidents can be achieved through combining heterogeneous data from different viewpoints, such as through the integration of patient complaints and staff incident reporting data. The state‐of‐the‐art magnetic tunnel junction, a cornerstone of spintronic devices and circuits, uses a magnesium oxide tunnel barrier that provides a uniquely large tunnel magnetoresistance at room temperature. However, the wide bandgap and band alignment of magnesium oxide‐iron systems increases the resistance‐area product and creates variability and breakdown challenges. Here, the authors study using first principles narrower‐bandgap scandium nitride (ScN) transport properties in magnetoresistive junctions in comparison to magnesium oxide. The results show a high magnetoresistance in Fe/ScN/Fe via Δ1 and Δ2′ symmetry filtering with low wave function decay rates, suggesting scandium nitride could be a new barrier material for spintronic devices. In this paper, we investigate the use of forward-backward (f/b) averaging for estimating the covariance matrix used for adaptive beamforming and space-time adaptive processing (STAP). We demonstrate that the estimation loss is reduced by the use of fib averaging and, for some STAP cases, fib averaging can even quadruple the available sample support. We also show that unknown array manifold errors have little effect on the effectiveness of f/b averaging. The gain from f/b averaging is demonstrated on data from the mountaintop database. Drawing on findings from a study of two social generations of gender and sexuality diverse Australians, this paper offers a critical analysis of expectations and experiences of inclusive health care for LGBTQ+ youth. Data were collected by means of individual and focus group interviews with people from two different social generations who grew up in regional or urban Australia: those born in the 1970s (n = 50) and those born in the 1990s (n = 71). Data were analysed inductively to develop insights into what inclusive health care meant, and what this revealed about the potential for fostering belonging in healthcare settings. Findings raise critical questions about how inclusiveness of care might best be understood in encounters between gender and sexual minorities and health professionals. In particular, forms of 'inclusivity labour' were observed across the social generations, both in terms of the work involved in seeking to locate supportive services, and in assessing the performance of clinicians in healthcare settings, with implications for the continued engagement of LGBTQ+ young people with essential forms of care. Mobilising contemporary forms of inclusivity labour, including attention to the affective dimensions of healthcare engagement, has the potential to promote both better health and more meaningful experiences of belonging for gender and sexual minorities. Electrophiles and olefic stannanes exhibit palladium pairing between them, which reveals ligand influences in the prominent arylstannane group. This allows the pairing of vinyl-aryl and aryl-aryl to occur at room temperature for uninhibited stannanes with huge triflates, subject to the absence of ligands. Triphenylarsine is employed as the optimum ligand with the origin of Pd-(O), Pad2dba3. The alkyl translocation interaction is likely to be an important side reaction, with aryltins containing replaced ortho and stannanes revealing a homocoupling interaction.
