Gender pay gaps in earnings are well-documented in the literature. However, new factors contributing to women's lower earnings have emerged and remain under-researched. Educational choices are among them. We use a rich administrative dataset from Poland, a Central Eastern European country with high tertiary education enrolment and high female employment rates among young women, to study gender pay gaps among tertiary education graduates with degrees in different fields of study while paying particular attention to STEM fields graduates (science, technology, engineering, and mathematics). We find that already in the first year after graduation, women earn over 20% less than men. This gap widens over time. We also find significant variation across different STEM fields both in the size of the gender pay gap and in how it changes over time. The gap is the largest among mathematics graduates, at over 25%; while it does not exceed 3% among chemical and Earth sciences graduates. As these differences narrow only slightly within the first four years of graduates' working careers, policymakers' efforts to increase the number of women earning STEM degrees may not be enough to achieve gender pay equality.

This phenomenological study reports findings related to preservice teachers' experiences mentoring early elementary readers. Preservice teachers in this study were enrolled in a literacy methods course designed to develop their understanding of early literacy, including knowledge of the written code and culturally sustaining and historically responsive pedagogy, and prepare them for the Texas' Science of Teaching Reading exam. Within this context, we explored how preservice teachers worked to bridge multiple approaches to literacy instruction. Thematic results illustrate how preservice teachers sustained the lifeways of children through literacy as a social practice, created space for code-based and meaning-making skills, and learned to teach responsively. These results provide implications for a comprehensive approach to preparing teachers of elementary literacy: one that fosters knowledge of the written code while contextualizing knowledge in children's cultures, communities, and experiences.

Narrative texts may represent a specific form of indirect contact, i.e., vicarious contact between the members of different groups. The present study introduces an online reading intervention promoting intergroup trust between children from the majority Czech population and the Vietnamese minority, reducing their perceived social distance and intergroup anxiety, as well as improving their behavioral intentions towards the minority. Forty-three primary school children were either part of a control group or participated in an online study, where stories about intergroup relations were read in three individual sessions. Selected stories represented the daily experiences of a same-aged boy from a Vietnamese minority. The control group only filled in the pre- and post-test questionnaires. The intervention group exhibited improvements in positive attitudes and reduction of negative attitudes with strong effect size. The subsequent goal of the study was to test whether secondary transfer would be manifested towards eight other minorities living in the country, i.e., whether the shift in attitudes would also generalize to minorities about whom the stories were not read. The manifested transfer varied from weak to very strong. The most profound change was exhibited in explicit attitudes towards Muslim and Roma, followed by the Ukrainian minority and homosexuals. The online reading intervention is therefore a promising tool for prejudice reduction in primary school children.

As Texas schools become increasingly diverse, educators are presented with opportunities to build on students' linguistic strengths and engage in transformative literacy teaching. Culturally sustaining early literacy instruction provides an avenue for teachers to support multilingual learners by leveraging their linguistic and cultural experiences as assets in reading development. This paper is organized into two sections: (1) an overview of culturally sustaining early literacy instruction and the contributions and limitations of the knowledge base associated with the Science of Reading (SOR), relating to multilingual learners; and (2) a description of three instructional strategies that support multilingual learners. The authors aim to disseminate this information to educators spanning K-16, fostering awareness of practices that educators can revisit and reassess as they tailor their instruction for multilingual students.

An essential part of making dashboards more effective in motivating students and leading to desirable behavioural change is knowing what information to communicate to the student and how to frame and present it. Most of the research studying dashboards' impact on learning analyzes learning indicators of students as a group. Understanding how a student's learning unfolds after viewing the dashboard is necessary for personalized dashboard selection and its content. In the context of the discussion activity, we analyzed 28,290 actions of 896 students after they saw their learning status on the dashboards, which were integrated into 21 discussions in 11 courses. We provide a comparative perspective on three dashboard types: the class average, the leaderboard, and message-quality dashboards. Our results indicate that students' behaviours after viewing three dashboards were associated with their displayed standing in the discussion: views showing the student's status below the frame of reference were associated with a higher likelihood of posting, and views of the student outperforming the norm with diminished further posting, although demonstrating higher discussion engagement. We reiterate a need to understand the impact of dashboard states on students' behaviour, creating a foundation for a personalized selection of dashboard views based on individual students' standing.

Context: The paper focuses on an analysis of school-based vocational education and training (VET) of adults in Slovakia against the background of the concept of second-chance education (hereafter SCE). The concept of SCE involves different conditions of education to those that adults faced during their initial education and were unable to meet. Adults primarily study part-time, where they are offered a mirror image of a reduced full-time programme rather than an alternative space for obtaining a degree. Approach: Several theoretical research methods were used in the paper. An analysis of available statistical data about adults in VET, secondary analysis of relevant literature, the authors' own findings from previous research, and a comparison of selected characteristics of VET of adults in Slovakia with the principles of second chance education allowed for the formulation of synthesised findings and recommendations on necessary changes in adult education in vocational education and training. Findings: The absence of SCE principles in the vocational education and training of adults in Slovakia is one of the reasons for insufficient participation of low-educated adults. Neither schools, nor the state or municipalities, nor employment offices have created a mechanism for acquiring and keeping adults in education. VET of adults does not fulfil a social integration function because it is mostly used by adults who are upgrading or supplementing their existing qualifications. A significant manifestation of the lack of interest in improving the situation of the low-educated in VET is, among other things, the absence of training programmes that would prepare teachers for a non-mainstream educational process with nonmainstream pupils. The measures, which would be aimed at increasing the participation of the low-educated adults in secondary education are absent. This situation results, among other things, in persistent regional disparities in adult participation in education, which deepen the marginalisation of entire regions and their populations. Conclusion: The VET of adults in Slovakia lacks the concept of second-chance education that would enable those who needed it the most to enter and obtain higher level of education. The implementation of the elements of the SCE concept in VET would allow for an increase in the participation and success of the most vulnerable groups of adults with the lowest education and socio-economic status.

All fields of knowledge are challenged to adopt newer, more sophisticated methodologies to cope with growing complexity. Phenomena under study require further multidisciplinary and mixed methods collaborations to achieve expertise able to improve research strategies and practices. Furthermore, traditional methodological approaches face limits to their analytical reach. Here, we demonstrate opportunities from adopting newer, more sophisticated methodologies in the field of higher education (HE) research by comparing three case studies. We argue that such methods and data innovate the mapping and understanding of global HE. These studies uncover novel field characterizations, enabled via analysis of tens of thousands of HE authors and articles over several decades to assess how journal publication, topics, and levels of analysis (individual, organizational, and system) have evolved. Our results imply that to better understand the future of HE worldwide and to address growing challenges, newer methodological directions and data sources will be key to facilitate more comprehensive examinations of the globalizing field. However, our analysis also highlights the technical and learning challenges in implementing these methodologies; thus, we argue for the need to promote more sophisticated methodological training of current and future generations of HE researchers as well as strengthened collaborations across disciplinary, methodological, and cultural boundaries.

Learning analytics dashboards (LADs) are very important tools for contemporary education. Not only researchers, but also schools at different levels of education and students are evaluating in this way today. A large number of studies have addressed the issue, but there are few studies that have explored the possibilities of transferring the semaphore method of formative assessment and self-assessment to the digital form of LADs. This study responds to the given absence and illuminates the built environment of the panel and its various functionalities using a prototype LAD. The paper contains a block diagram and a use case that can be used to create an application. This study includes evidence based on guided interviews with 8 teacher-academics from an international university setting on the usefulness of LAD features, the suitability of the semaphore method, and the optimal frequency of teacher assessment and student self-assessment. The study revealed that the most useful elements were considered to be the simplicity of the dashboard, a user-friendly environment, the semaphore method allowing scaling of scores, and also colour, and the comparison of teacher evaluation and student self-assessment. The semaphore method is attractive because of its simplicity, clarity in assessment and transparency in tracking progress. The proposed LAD allows the same competency to be assessed several times in succession as part of progress monitoring. It is optimal to assess three times per semester in university settings. A practical implication of the study is the use of the LAD for the purpose of analyzing the causes in success rates at the level of degree programs, faculties or universities.

Background: Documented inequalities in access to eye care for people with learning disabilities and/or autism are caused by poor uptake of primary eye care services, poor identification of eye problems, lack of signposting and reasonable adjustments of existing services, concerns about costs of care and the low priority historically given to these issues in eye care policy at a regional and national level. In 2019, the charity SeeAbility employed four eye care champions (ECCs) with lived experience of learning disability and/or autism to work in local communities in London and the Northwest of England. They provided peer-to-peer support on understanding the need for good eye health and engaged with policy makers, and learning disability, autism and eye care professionals at the local, regional and national levels to influence both the clinical practice of individual practitioners (within existing service/pathway models) and more widely to influence the commissioning of the Easy Eye Care pathway. This study explores the experiences of these ECCs. Methods: The study was conducted in April and May 2023. A case study approach was used to describe the experiences of the ECCs from March 2019 to March 2023. Data from structured interviews with the four ECCs and workload analysis were triangulated to provide a multifaceted understanding of this novel health promotion project. Findings: The ECCs found the role useful and reported that confidence in their practice and impact grew with time but they required ongoing support in the role. A good understanding of the promotional messages was reported. Developing a good network of contacts at an early stage, both people with learning disabilities and healthcare professionals, was key. Relationships with professionals were supportive and positive and a positive emotive response to their lived experience was reported in these interactions. Conclusions: From the perspective of the ECCs, the role is useful and beneficial. The work suggests some key recommendations for future development which include planning to build networks, support in presentation and communications skills and defining key messages and knowledge. Confidence of the ECCs builds with time in the role but also needs support the emotive impact of their lived experiences on audiences is highlighted. There is a need to evaluate how the programme is perceived by those who interact with it and how it changes behaviours which leads to better health outcomes.
