The transition to reactor-relevant materials for the plasma facing components (PFCs) is an important and necessary step to provide a proof of principle that the stellarator concept can meet the requirements of a future fusion reactor by demonstrating high performance steady-state operation. As a first step to gain experience with tungsten as plasma-facing material in the Wendelstein 7-X (W7-X) stellarator, graphite tiles coated with an approximately 10 µm MedC tungsten layer (NILPRP Bucharest) were installed to complete the ECRH beam dump area in two of the five plasma vessel modules over an area of approximately one square meter each. In addition, tungsten baffle tiles are installed (40 tiles in total) with either bulk tungsten as part of NBI shine-through target or with a tungsten heavy alloy (W95-Ni3.5-Cu1.5) to replace the graphite tiles that were previously thermally overloaded. Based on an advanced diffusive field line tracing method and EMC3-Eirene simulations, the overloaded baffle tiles were redesigned by making the tiles thinner (i.e. moving the plasma-facing surface (PFS) away from the hot plasma region) and by reducing the local angle of incidence through toroidal displacement of the watershed. Significant erosion of the tungsten tiles can only be expected if sputtering by impurity ions such as carbon or oxygen ions contributes. However, the resulting central concentration of tungsten and the corresponding radiation losses are expected to be marginal. The expected deposition of carbon on the tungsten surfaces in the baffle regions mitigates further the possible tungsten enrichment in the core plasma. In OP2.1, no adverse effects of the installed tungsten PFCs on the plasma performance were observed during normal plasma operation. With the design changes made in the baffle area, the predicted heat load reductions could be experimentally confirmed.

Wendelstein 7-X (W7-X) is currently the largest optimized stellarator in operation in the world. Its main objective is to demonstrate long pulse operation and to investigate the suitability of this type of fusion device for a power plant. Maintaining the safety of the first wall is critical to achieving the desired discharge times of approximately 30 min while keeping a steady-state condition. We present a deep learning-based solution to detect the unexpected plasma-wall and plasma-object interactions, so-called hot-spots, in the images of the Event Detection Intelligent Camera (EDICAM) system. These events can pose a serious threat to the safety of the first wall, therefore, to the operation of the device. We show that sufficiently training a neural network with relatively small amounts of data is possible using our approach of mixing the experimental dataset with new images containing so-called synthetic hot-spots generated by us. Diversifying the dataset with synthetic hot-spots increases performance and can make up for the lack of data. The best performing YOLOv5 Small model processes images in 168 ms on average during inference, making it a good candidate for real-time operation. To our knowledge, we are the first ones to be able to detect events in the visible spectrum in stellarators with high accuracy, using neural networks trained on small amounts of data while achieving near-real-time inference times.

The research on Paulownia cultivation and wood properties is up to date in many countries. However, there are no data on the properties of this wood defined on a microscale, on microtome samples. The main aim of this study was to find the best valorization path for the wood of Paulownia Shang Tong Hybrid F1 from an extensively cultivated plantation established in April 2017 in Poland by determining the tensile strength, the wood density, the strength-to-density ratio, and the modulus of elasticity on a cross-section of the trunk. The wood was collected from extensive plantation, where production is based on the natural resources of the habitat and ambient weather conditions, which is the opposite to the intensive cultivation model, which is the recommended model of Paulownia cultivation. The results of this study show that the mean density of the analyzed samples was approximately 210 kg/m3 when the mean value of the modulus of elasticity (MOE) was approximately 2400 MPa. The mean result for the tensile strength ratio to density was 11.25 km. In the case of anatomical structure, the increasing trend with age was noticed both in fiber and vessel characteristics. The study results provide unique data worldwide about Paulownia wood’s properties based on a cross-section of the trunk, from plantations cultivated in conditions which are not recommended by seedlings producers. The obtained data indicate that the Paulownia wood (examined) from the cultivation in this study has a technical quality similar to that of model-intensive agricultural plantations.

The resin tapping of pine trees in Poland ended in the early 1990s. However, we can still find individual trees, and sometimes larger groups of trees, that were tapped. This study focused on the effect of the mechanical wounding of trees during resin tapping on the growth and climatic sensitivity of pine trees. The study concerned a 160-year-old pine stand in northwestern Poland in which resin tapping was last performed in the 1970s. All the trees had remained standing because of their high quality, which had destined them for seed collection. The stand included both resin-tapped (RT) and non-RT (NRT) trees. Our study was based on a dendrochronological analysis of two signals—annual tree ring widths (TRWs) and their delta blue intensity (DBI). We observed a significant increase in annual TRW after resin tapping had ceased, alongside a decrease in the DBI. The temporal stability in growth response was examined using daily climatic correlations from 1921 to 2021. It was found that the climatic sensitivity of RT and NRT pines was similar. There were differences in only some of the years, most while resin tapping was occurring, and then approximately 20 years after the resin tapping had ceased. However, these were small differences that mainly related to the strength of the correlation. It was also discovered that we can obtain different types of information from the study of TRWs and DBI.

This review aimed to determine the current state of research on the growth conditions and use pertaining to paulownia wood, mainly in European countries where paulownia has been introduced only relatively recently. Several studies carried out on Paulownia hybrids have shown significant differences in the growth dynamics of individual clones in their response to local environmental and climatic conditions. For example, dry biomass production yields in the second year of cultivation range from 1.5 t ha−1 to as much as 14 t ha−1. This diversity has manifested itself not only in growth characteristics but also in the properties of the wood and the possibilities for its use. Despite having clear similarities to the genus Paulownia, the cultivation of species and hybrids under different conditions has produced varying results. The best growing conditions for this wood (that make economic sense) are in the Middle East and Southern Europe. These regions have accumulated the most experience because of the earlier establishment of the crop. Today, paulownia cultivation is dominated by hybrids with selected traits that are propagated mainly in vitro. The most commonly planted hybrids include the clones in vitro 112, Cotevisa 2 and Shan Tong. The growth results and production capacity in central European countries are lower compared to Southern Europe. Experiments on paulownia cultivation are still relatively young, mainly consisting of replicating the cultivation of hybrids developed in Asia or Southern Europe. However, agronomic procedures are being developed and reactions to local climatic conditions are being studied. It is likely that, in the next few years, the profitability of growing paulownia in these regions will become apparent.

Machine protection is a core task of real-time image diagnostics aiming for steady-state operation in nuclear fusion devices. The paper evaluates the applicability of the newest low-power NVIDIA Jetson Xavier NX platform for image plasma diagnostics. This embedded NVIDIA Tegra System-on-a-Chip (SoC) integrates a Graphics Processing Unit (GPU) and Central Processing Unit (CPU) on a single chip. The hardware differences and features compared to the previous NVIDIA Jetson TX2 are signified. Implemented algorithms detect thermal events in real-time, utilising the high parallelism provided by the embedded General-Purpose computing on Graphics Processing Units (GPGPU). The performance and accuracy are evaluated on the experimental data from the Wendelstein 7-X (W7-X) stellarator. Strike-line and reflection events are primarily investigated, yet benchmarks for overload hotspots, surface layers and visualisation algorithms are also included. Their detection might allow for automating real-time risk evaluation incorporated in the divertor protection system in W7-X. For the first time, the paper demonstrates the feasibility of complex real-time image processing in nuclear fusion applications on low-power embedded devices. Moreover, GPU-accelerated reference processing pipelines yielding higher accuracy compared to the literature results are proposed, and remarkable performance improvement resulting from the upgrade to the Xavier NX platform is attained.

Timber harvested from fresh-felled trees has high moisture content and relatively high mass. During storage, the timber dries out and its weight decreases with the loss of moisture. The main objective of this study was to determine how the method and conditions of short-storage in summer affect weight changes and moisture loss in beech timber (not used for fuel). The study was carried out in a stand located in the north-eastern part of the range of beech. The age of the studied stand was 47 years. A total of 60 model trees were selected and divided into two groups. In the first group, 30 whole trees (WT) were left in the stand after felling. In the second group, 30 trees (CT) were delimbed and crosscut, and trunk sections (logs) were obtained (2.5 m). The timber (CT) was stored in a pile, and the weight of each log was measured daily. After 14 days, the trees from the first group, which had been left in the stand (WT), were delimbed and the trunks were cut into 2.5 m sections and weighed. It was assumed that timber intended for mechanical processing is stored in the forest for a short period of time, unlike energy wood. Therefore, the period of storage was not longer than two weeks. A more effective method of drying is to leave whole trees after felling, called transpirational drying. The timber stored in a pile (CT) lost moisture more slowly than the timber from trees that had been left whole after felling (WT). Comparing the weights of the logs stored in a pile, on days after harvesting, a statistically significant difference was found only between the first and the last day. It can be concluded that two weeks is the minimum period of storage in a pile (CT) required to obtain a significant degree of weight change and moisture loss.

Wendelstein 7-X (W7-X) is the leading experiment on the path of demonstrating that stellarators are a feasible concept for a future power plant. One of its major goals is to prove quasi-steady-state operation in a reactor-relevant parameter regime. The surveillance and protection of the water-cooled plasma-facing components (PFCs) against overheating is fundamental to guarantee a safe steady-state high-heat-flux operation. The system has to detect thermal events in real-time and timely interrupt operation if it detects a critical event. The fast reaction times required to prevent damage to the device make it imperative to automate fully the image analysis algorithms. During the past operational phases, W7-X was equipped with inertially cooled test divertor units and the system still required manual supervision. With the experience gained, we have designed a new real-time PFC protection system based on image processing techniques. It uses a precise registration of the entire field of view against the CAD model to determine the temperature limits and thermal properties of the different PFCs. Instead of reacting when the temperature limits are breached in certain regions of interest, the system predicts when an overload will occur based on a heat flux estimation, triggering the interlock system in advance to compensate for the system delay. To conclude, we present our research roadmap towards a feedback control system of thermal loads to prevent unnecessary plasma interruptions in long high-performance plasmas.

The detachment regime has a high potential to play an important role in fusion devices on the road to a fusion power plant. Complete power detachment has been observed several times during the experimental campaigns of the Wendelstein 7-X (W7-X) stellarator. Automatic observation and signaling of such events could help scientists to better understand these phenomena. With the growing discharge times in fusion devices, machine learning models and algorithms are a powerful tool to process the increasing amount of data. We investigate several classical supervised machine learning models to detect complete power detachment in the images captured by the Event Detection Intelligent Camera System (EDICAM) at the W7-X at each given image frame. In the dedicated detached state the plasma is stable despite its reduced contact with the machine walls and the radiation belt stays close to the separatrix, without exhibiting significant heat load onto the divertor. To decrease computational time and resources needed we propose certain pixel intensity profiles (or intensity values along lines) as the input to these models. After finding the profile that describes the images best in terms of detachment, we choose the best performing machine learning algorithm. It achieves an F1 score of 0.9836 on the training dataset and 0.9335 on the test set. Furthermore, we investigate its predictions in other scenarios, such as plasmas with substantially decreased minor radius and several magnetic configurations.

The allocation of wood density in trees depends on many factors, but mainly on the tree species. A great number of studies have analysed wood density in dominant or codominant trees, but only a few have focused on trees grown under canopy. We examined the basic wood density and fresh wood density of natural origin oaks growing under canopy of artificially planted Scots pine. The major purpose of the work was to study the wood density allocation in different parts of the trees such as the trunk and branches. From a total of 80 oaks we selected eight model trees and measured biometric features of their trunks and crowns. Wood samples from different parts of the trunk and crown were collected after the trees were felled. We observed significant differences between the average basic wood density (595 kg·m−3) and the average fresh wood density (1031 kg·m−3). The central part of the trunk and heartwood shows much higher density than the outer part of the trunk and sapwood, which corresponds to the model of ring-porous trees. Both types of wood density (basic and fresh) were also higher in the trunk than in the branches. The wood density of the branches differed between two zones: A1, which was closer to the trunk and had higher density; and A2, which was farther away from the trunk with lower density. Wood density shows positive correlation with crown length but not with crown width, which was more connected with diameter at breast height. We found lower value of slenderness than the value reported by other authors in oaks planted without canopy. The allocation of wood density in trees is associated with the potential mechanical load.

Introduction and Objectives Holding determined body postures during work is connected with muscles activity. The more forced the posture, the larger the number of muscles taking an active part in holding and stabilizing the work posture. During logging, the greatest share of awkward (forced) working postures occurs in tree felling by chainsaw. Material and Methods A group of 10 experienced fellers aged 47.5±7.3 (37 – 59-years-old) was studied. Heart rate (HR) was measured during simulation of felling activity in 4 working postures: back bent forward with straight legs (stoop), back bent forward with bent legs (flexed-stoop), squat and kneeling on one knee (half-kneel). Results The lowest value of HR was noticed for squatting – 114.1 bpm, then for kneeling on one knee – 116.3 bpm. HR during felling in a standing posture with straight legs amounted to 121.5 bpm and for standing with bent legs 125.3 bpm. We report on comparative study of magnetic properties of Pt/Co/Pt trilayers after irradiation with different light sources. Ultrathin Pt/Co/Pt films were deposited by molecular beam epitaxy technique on sapphire (0001) substrates. Pt buffers were grown at room temperature (RT) and at 750°C (high temperature, HT). The samples were irradiated with a broad range of light energy densities (up to film ablation) using two different single pulse irradiation sources: (i) 40 fs laser with 800 nm wavelength and (ii) 3 ns laser-plasma source of extreme ultraviolet (EUV) with the most intense emission centered at 11 nm. The light pulse-driven irreversible structural and as a consequence, magnetic modifications were investigated using polar magneto-optical Kerr effect-based microscopy and atomic and magnetic force microscopies. The light pulse-induced transitions from the out-of-plane to in-plane magnetization state, and from in-plane to out-of-plane, were observed for both types of samples and irradiation methods. Diagrams of the magnetic states as a function of the Co layer thickness and energy density of the absorbed femtosecond pulses were constructed for the samples with both the RT and HT buffers. The energy density range responsible for the creation of the out-of-plane magnetization was wider for the HT than for RT buffer. This is correlated with the higher (for HT) crystalline quality and much smoother Pt/Co surface deduced from the X-ray diffraction studies. Submicrometer magnetic domains were observed in the irradiated region while approaching the out-of-plane magnetization state. Changes of Pt/Co/Pt structures are discussed for both types of light pulses.

The control of rotational transform in Wendelstein 7-X (W7-X) is key to both the island divertor operation and safety of plasma facing components. The island divertor concept in W7-X relies on an edge flux surface with rotational transform of resonating with an intrinsic n/m  =  5/5 resonance to form a five lobed island chain. This island chain intersects with divertor plates to give rise to the island divertor. Changes in the relative position of the rational surface and the divertor plates can result in changes in divertor performance, thus the control of the rotational transform is essential to operation of the W7-X device. During the first divertor campaign electromagnetic loads resulted in elastic deformations of the shaped modular stellarator coils. Such deformations made these coils more planar, reducing the vacuum rotational transform, subsequently shifting the resonance outward. Unintended plasma wall interactions provided the first clear evidence of this effect during plasma operation. Flux surface measurements were utilized to estimate the correct level of current in the planar coils for correction of , and found to be around  ∼. Scans of the planar coil current for iota correction were performed during plasma operation. These measurements suggest planar coil currents between  −250 and  ∼ would place the strike lines at the designed distance from the pumping gaps. The role of toroidal plasma currents for the island divertor scrape-off layer in the stellarator Wendelstein 7-X is investigated using reciprocating electric probes. Experiments show that small amounts (of a few kA) of plasma current are sufficient to significantly affect the scrape-off layer plasma conditions, whereas higher plasma currents above 10kA result in more drastic changes. This behavior is linked to the effect of the plasma current on the rotational transform profile, which can result in significant shifts of the edge magnetic islands. These shifts affect the interaction of the islands with the divertor and can eventually result in a transition from a diverted to a limited plasma configuration. The probe observations are complemented by further edge diagnostics including plasma flow measurements, divertor Langmuir probes, divertor thermography and impurity spectroscopy. The W7-X scrape-off layer (SOL) with its characteristic magnetic island chain has been investigated using electric probes mounted on a reciprocating manipulator close to the outboard mid-plane. A survey of the W7-X configuration space shows that the presence and particular topology of magnetic islands significantly affects the SOL profiles of electron temperature, density, electric field and plasma flows. Particularly relevant for divertor operation, very wide SOL heat flux profiles have been observed in some magnetic configurations, which we link to the presence of magnetic islands. In these situations, the islands can feature a local minimum of the plasma potential accompanied by a direction reversal of driven dynamics measured by probe arrays. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

Wendelstein 7-X is a highly optimized stellarator that went into operation in 2015. With a 30 cubic meter volume, a superconducting coil system operating at 2.5 T, and steady-state heating capability of eventually up to 10 MW, it was built to demonstrate the benefits of optimized stellarators at parameters approaching those of a fusion power plant. We report here on the first results with the test divertor installed, during the second operation phase, which was performed in the second half of 2017. Operation with a divertor, and the addition of several new fueling systems, allowed higher density operation in hydrogen as well as helium. The effects that higher density operation had on both divertor operation and global confinement will be described. In particular, at high densities detachment was observed, and the highest fusion triple product for a stellarator was achieved. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

The role of error fields in stellarators is explored in this work through simulations of, and experiments performed on, the Wendelstein 7-X (W7-X) stellarator. Previous experimental results, based on limiter plasmas in W7-X, suggest that error fields are small in the experiment based on limiter plasmas. In this work, we document results from the first divertor campaign on W7-X with a focus on error fields resonant with the edge island divertor structure. Measurements obtained using divertor thermocouples corroborate earlier limiter results that the error fields are small and correctable, requiring only 5% of the total rated current of the trim coil system. The effect of these error fields on magnetic geometry and topology are investigated using the flux surface measurement technique. The resulting divertor thermal load asymmetry is modeled via field line diffusion and compared to experimental data. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

The measurement and correction of error fields in Wendelstein 7-X (W7-X) is critical to long pulse high beta operation, as small error fields may cause overloading of divertor plates in some configurations. Accordingly, as part of a broad collaborative effort, the detection and correction of error fields on the W7-X experiment has been performed using the trim coil system in conjunction with the flux surface mapping diagnostic and high resolution infrared camera. In the early commissioning phase of the experiment, the trim coils were used to open an n/m  =  1/2 island chain in a specially designed magnetic configuration. The flux surfacing mapping diagnostic was then able to directly image the magnetic topology of the experiment, allowing the inference of a small  ∼4 cm intrinsic island chain. The suspected main sources of the error field, slight misalignment and deformations of the superconducting coils, are then confirmed through experimental modeling using the detailed measurements of the coil positions. Observations of the limiters temperatures in module 5 shows a clear dependence of the limiter heat flux pattern as the perturbing fields are rotated. Plasma experiments without applied correcting fields show a significant asymmetry in neutral pressure (centered in module 4) and light emission (visible, H-alpha, CII, and CIII). Such pressure asymmetry is associated with plasma-wall (limiter) interaction asymmetries between the modules. Application of trim coil fields with n  =  1 waveform correct the imbalance. Confirmation of the error fields allows the assessment of magnetic fields which resonate with the n/m  =  5/5 island chain. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]
