The article reports the results of an experimental activity conducted on dredged fine-grained marine sediments and aimed to find out novel eco-friendly solutions for their mechanical stabilisation. The main idea of this research is to use seashells, i.e., another waste material, to partially replace cement binders in the mechanical stabilisation of sediments for the production of a new stable material that can potentially be used in construction. To this aim, an original procedure has been developed to obtain a powder of mussel shells without their calcination. Physical properties, one-dimensional compression behaviour and permeability of the novel mixtures including sediments, mussel shell powder and cements are presented for different curing times. The efficacy of the solutions is assessed also by comparison with the performance of control mixtures prepared by mixing the same sediments with cement only. The effects of the different treatments on the soil properties were analysed, demonstrating multiple beneficial effects of using the mussel shell powder. Evidence is provided that seashells represent a viable alternative to cement, as they were found to be as effective as traditional hydraulic binders, when replacing them up to 1/4, in enhance geomechanical and geochemical performance of the stabilized material.

Climate change significantly alters species distributions. Numerous studies project the future distribution of species using Species Distribution models (SDMs), most often using coarse resolutions. Working at coarse resolutions in forest ecosystems fails to capture landscape-level dynamics, spatially explicit processes, and temporally defined events that act at finer resolutions and that can disproportionately affect future outcomes. Dynamic Forest Landscape Models (FLMs) can simulate the survival, growth, and mortality of (stands of) trees over long time periods at small resolutions. However, as they are able to simulate at fine resolutions, study landscapes remain relatively small due to computational constraints. The large amount of feedbacks between biodiversity, forest, and ecosystem processes cannot completely be captured by FLMs or SDMs alone. Integrating SDMs with FLMs enables a more detailed understanding of the impact of perturbations on forest landscapes and their biodiversity. Several studies have used this approach at landscape scales, using fine resolutions. Yet, many scientific questions in the fields of biogeography, macroecology, conservation management, among others, require a focus on both large scales and fine resolutions. Here, drawn from literature and experience, we provide our perspective on the most important challenges that need to be overcome to use integrated frameworks at spatial scales larger than the landscape and at fine resolutions. Future research should prioritize these challenges to better understand drivers of species distributions in forest ecosystems and effectively design conservation strategies under the influence of changing climates on spatially and temporally explicit processes. Statistical downscaling of climate data has been widely described in the literature, with the aim of improving the reliability of local climatic parameters from coarse-resolution (often >20 km) global datasets. In this article, we present ClimateDT, a dynamic downscaling web tool for monthly historical and future time series at a global scale. The core of ClimateDT is the 1 km 1981–2010 climatology from CHELSA Climate (version 2.1), where the CRU-TS layers for the period 1901-current are overlayed to generate a historic time series. ClimateDT also provides future scenarios from CMIP5 using UKCP18 projections (rcp2.6 and rcp8.5) and CMIP6 using 5 GCMs, also available on the CHELSA website. The system can downscale the grids using a dynamic approach (scale-free) by computing a local environmental lapse rate for each location as an adjustment for spatial interpolation. Local predictions of temperature and precipitation obtained by ClimateDT were compared with climate time series assembled from 12,000 meteorological stations, and the Mean Absolute Error (MAE) and the explained variance (R2) were used as indicators of performance. The average MAEs for monthly values on the whole temporal scale (1901–2022) were around 1.26 °C for the maximum monthly temperature, 0.80 °C for the average monthly temperature, and 1.32 °C for the minimum monthly temperature. Regarding monthly total precipitation, the average MAE was 19 mm. As for the proportion of variance explained, average R2 values were always greater than 0.95 for temperatures and around 0.70 for precipitation due to the different degrees of temporal autocorrelation of precipitation data across time and space, which makes the estimation more complex. The elevation adjustment resulted in very accurate estimates in mountainous regions and areas with complex topography and substantially improved the local climatic parameter estimations in the downscaling process. Since its first release in November 2022, more than 1300 submissions have been processed. It takes less than 2 min to calculate 45 locations and around 8 min for the full dataset (512 records). Ecological modeling refers to the construction and analysis of mathematical models aimed at understanding the complexity of ecological processes and at predicting how real ecosystems might evolve. It is a quickly expanding approach boosted by impressive accelerations in the availability of computational resources and environmental databases. In the light of foreseeing the effect of climate change on forest ecosystems, the branch of ecological modeling focusing on species distribution models (SDMs) has become widely used to estimate indices of habitat suitability and to forecast future tree distributions. However, SDMs are usually informed based solely on environmental data without any reference to the genetic makeup underlying responses to the environment, the possibility of exchanging variants helping to persist in situ, or the capacity to chase suitable conditions elsewhere. Among the main evolutionary processes that may complement forecasts of range shifts are local adaptation and gene flow, i.e., the occurrence of genetic variants conferring a population the optimal fitness in its own habitat and the exchange of adaptive alleles between populations. Local adaptation and gene flow could be described by indices of genetic diversity and structure, genetic load, genomic offset, and an admixture of genetic lineages. Here, we advocate for the development of a new analytical approach integrating environmental and genomic information when projecting tree distributions across space and time. To this aim, we first provide a literature review on the use of genetics when modeling intraspecific responses to the environment, and we then discuss the potential improvements and drawbacks deriving from the inclusion of genomic data into the current SDM framework. Finally, we speculate about the potential impacts of genomic-informed predictions in the context of forest conservation and provide a synthetic framework for developing future forest management strategies. Alkali-activated materials (AAMs) provide an opportunity to up-cycle several residues into added-value materials. Although generally praised for their performance under thermal loads, the thermal behavior of AAMs is dictated by a multitude of factors and the performance of CaO-FeOx-rich systems may differ from geopolymers. Therefore, this work ascertains the high-temperature resistance of CaO-FeOx-Al2O3-SiO2-rich AAMs. Mortars were exposed to different heating rates (≤10 °C/min) and temperatures (≤1100 °C), and volume and mass loss, apparent density, compressive strength (CS), mineralogical composition, and morphology were evaluated. At low heating rates, the main effects noted were densification and a gradual lightening of color as the temperature rose. CS underwent an abrupt decline at 750 °C and recovered at higher temperatures, reaching a maximum value of 184 ± 13 MPa at 1100 °C. With an increased heating rate to 10 °C/min, the strength loss at 750 °C persisted, but maximum CS was halved when firing at 900 °C. At 1100 °C, a significant reduction of CS was observed, but all samples maintained their integrity. Except for 1100 °C at 10 °C/min, all sintered-AAMs presented residual CS above 40 MPa. These results demonstrate that CaO-FeOx-Al2O3-SiO2-rich AAMs present interesting thermal behavior and can be potentially used to produce glass-ceramics or refractory materials from secondary resources. The cultivation of hybrid poplar clones is increasing worldwide. Hundreds of hectares of plantations now occur across Europe and other continents such as North America, using tested clones and novel genotypes. Research effort aims are to develop fast growing disease- and pest-resistant clones to improve production quality and quantity. In this study the phenotypic plasticity of poplar clones was tested across environmental and temporal gradients. The growth performance of 49 hybrid poplar clones recorded between 1980 and 2021 was analysed using a mixed-effects model with climatic data as a predictor variable. Clones were aggregated into two groups according to their breeding protocol (i.e., standard clone, and improved material) and their growth modelled for future climate scenarios of RCPs 2.6 and 8.5 using a downscaled version of the variants 01 and 21 of UKCP18 climate projections dataset for three 30-year normal period time-slices: 2030s, 2040s, 2050s. The fitted growth models showed highly significant results, explaining more than 85% of the variance, with a mean relative absolute error of approximately 2%. Improved material showed more resistance to warmer and drier climates and less sensitivity to the changing climate. While no unique pattern was found when comparing growth performances, new improved clones were more productive than older clones (e.g., 'I-214') with an additional benefit of resistance to rust and pests. Spatial predictions confirmed the Po valley as the most important geographic area for poplar cultivation in Italy, but zones in Central and Southern Italy show potential. However, the Po Valley is also where poplars are predicted to be suitable in the next decades with large uncertainties. The analysis identified the need for more research on the topic of poplar breeding. For example, models using the most extreme (warm and dry) climate projection, variant 01 of RCP8.5 of the UKCP18, exceeded the historic climate threshold, and predictions used model extrapolation, with associated statistical uncertainty. Interactions between soil, topography, and climatic site factors can exacerbate and/ or alleviate the vulnerability of oak woodland to climate change. Reducing climaterelated impacts on oak woodland habitats and ecosystems through adaptation management requires knowledge of different site interactions in relation to species tolerance. In Britain, the required thematic detail of woodland type is unavailable from digital maps. A species distribution model (SDM) ensemble, using biomod2 algorithms, was used to predict oak woodland. The model was cross-validated (50%:50% - training:testing) 30 times, with each of 15 random sets of absence data, matching the size of presence data, to maximize environmental variation while maintaining data prevalence. Four biomod2 algorithms provided stable and consistent TSS-weighted ensemble mean results predicting oak woodland as a probability raster. Biophysical data from the Ecological Site Classification (forest site classification) for Britain were used to characterize oak woodland sites. Several forest datasets were used, each with merits and weaknesses: public forest estate subcompartment database map (PFE map) for oak-stand locations as a training dataset; the national forest inventory (NFI) "published regional reports" of oak woodland area; and an "NFI map" of indicative forest type broad habitat. Broadleaved woodland polygons of the NFI map were filled with the biomod2 oak woodland probability raster. Ranked pixels were selected up to the published NFI regional area estimate of oak woodland and matched to the elevation distribution of oak woodland stands, from "NFI survey" sample squares. Validation using separate oak woodland data showed that the elevation filter significantly improved the accuracy of predictions from 55% (p = .53) to 83% coincidence success rate (p < .0001). The biomod2 ensemble, with masking and filtering, produced a predicted oak woodland map, from which site characteristics will be used in climate change interaction studies, supporting adaptation management recommendations for forest policy and practice. Understanding tree species responses to climate change is crucial for preserving biodiversity especially in Southern Europe hot spots where Abies alba is widely spread. Three Apennine silver fir populations, Pigelleto (PIG), La Verna (LV) and Bocca Trabaria (BT), ensured gene flows in interglacial periods between the two phylogenetically different groups of northern and southern Apennines. These stands were analysed (nuclear and chloroplast SSRs) with the aim to establish a baseline for their future management in view of the expected changes. The three forests were tested for the Centre-Periphery Hypothesis (CPH) compared to forty-five Italian populations. At the same time, permanent areas were surveyed within LV and PIG on dominant (a) and dominated or natural regeneration (r) tree layers, and on age classes. In two consecutive years, spring cambial phenology activity was also weekly monitored on microcores, and critical phenology dates recorded. The stands matched CPH only partially, showing different phylogenetic history and their bridging between northern and southern groups of silver fir populations was confirmed. LV was distinct from PIG and BT. The within-population variance component was significantly high, and no narrow relatedness was observed between dominant and dominated/ regeneration spatially closer trees, and genetic parameters were comparable in both layers at LV and PIG. In both stands, older age classes ensured natural regeneration. Cambium phenology was highly variable within populations, consistently to other Mediterranean conifers, and highly sensitive to local and year's conditions and monitoring will improve population's adaptive capacity detection. Shelterwood-system silvicultural treatments are suggested on small areas to drive the demographic and panmictic balance towards an uneven-aged more resilient structure, and iterated monitoring will help to adapt the forest management to the isotherm shift. The goal of this study is to assess the impact of different thinning approaches for coppice conversion into high forest of Turkey oak stands in Italy. The stand structure and the tree/shrub diversity were analyzed in 27 long-term monitoring plots from 7 experimental trials in the Colline Metallifere district (Tuscany, Central Italy) to verify the consistency of the original cultivation goals with the current stand structures. Three different approaches were applied from 1969 onwards: thinning from below, selective thinning, and no-management. Three indexes of specific diversity (Specific Richness, Shannon index and Importance Value) and two indexes of vertical diversity (Vertical Evenness and Coefficient of variation of tree height) were used to analyze and compare the outcome of management practices. The results showed a significantly higher dimensional variability and basal area, and a more complex vertical diversity in control plots and in the plots subject to selective thinning, as compared with plots subject to thinning from below. Tree species richness was high in all plots, independently of the thinning type applied. Based on our results, we suggest Turkey oak-dominated transitory stands to be initially managed by thinning from below, which is easy to be implemented and economically feasible. Key message: The adoption of new silvicultural methods and approaches requires an understanding of the differences between those and “old” or “conventional” approaches, along with extensive training to break previous knowledge bias. Context: Forestry is in transition towards ecosystem-based management, and new silvicultural approaches are appearing worldwide. However, the adoption of an alternative silvicultural approach is difficult in practice. Aims: We analyzed the effect of forestry background and demographic variables (gender and age) of 24 raters on the application of the systemic approach (SA) and the conventional approach (CA) in the Northern Apennines (Italy) and compared this with tree marking performed by experts. Methods: Data were analyzed as raters’ departures from experts’ selections at the stand and the individual tree level. The probability of tree selection was also calculated. Results: At the stand level, raters with forestry background performed the SA as if they were marking for crown thinning, whereas the CA was less intense than experts’ crown thinning. Non-foresters differentiated poorly between the SA and the CA. At the individual tree level, background and gender affected tree selection. Conclusion: The adoption of the SA as a silvicultural system may be conditioned by previous knowledge. The difference between SA and CA remains unclear when it comes to non-foresters. The future dynamics of forest species and ecosystems depend on the effects of climate change and are related to forest management strategies. The expected impacts of climate change are linked to forest growth and productivity. An increase in the length of the growing season and greater productivity are likely as well as shifts in average climatic values and more variable frequencies, intensities, durations and timings of extreme events. The main aim of this work is to assess and describe the climatic requirements for Italian forest tree species. We used 7,272 field observations from Italian National Forest Inventory plots and average annual temperatures and precipitation as interpolated from raster maps with 1 km spatial resolution. On this basis we evaluated the current observed distributions of the 19 most important tree species in Italy with respect to potential climatic limits based on expert knowledge and the available literature. We found that only 46% of the observations fall within the potential joint temperature and precipitation limits as defined by expert knowledge. For precipitation alone, 70% of observations were within the potential limits, and for temperature alone, 80% of observations were within the potential limits. Similarity between current observed and potential limits differ from species-to-species with broadleaves in general more frequently distributed within the potential climatic limits than conifers. We found that ecological requirements and potential information should be revised for some species, particularly for the Pinus genus and more frequently for precipitation. The results of the study are particularly relevant given the threat of climate change effects for Italian forests which are broadly acknowledged to be a biodiversity hotspot. Further investigations should be aimed at modelling the effects of climate changes on Italian forests as a basis for development of mitigation and adaptation forest management strategies. The assessment of seed zones or regions of provenance (RoP) to preserve local adaptation of tree species is an effective tool for the correct management of forest reproductive materials. The RoP for a species or sub-species is the area or group of areas subject to sufficiently uniform ecological conditions in which stands or seed sources show similar phenotypic or genetic characters, taking into account altitudinal boundaries where appropriate. However, the delineation of RoPs is commonly based on estimates of intrinsic environmental homogeneity, mainly climate and/or soil characteristics. The integration of genetic data into RoP maps is an important strategy to obtain a sound tool for managing forest reproductive materials. A study on Quercus suber (cork oak) in Sardinia (Italy) was carried out with the aim of determining ecological regions of provenance, investigating the genetic diversity among populations at the regional scale and identifying possible areas of interest for valorising the available germplasm. Identification of these areas was performed by Reserve Selection Analysis, which allows to identify priority areas by assessing the minimum number of sites required to include all the genetic diversity estimated by genetic analysis. Four spatial clusters were obtained based on environmental data: the northern and northern-eastern parts of the island were included in the Northern RoP; the second RoP covered the western part; and the third RoP enclosed the south-eastern region. The last group was distributed on the central part of the island (Central RoP) and includes the higher elevations. The sampled populations showed a low differentiation among populations and low diversity. According to the Reserve Selection Analysis, four conservation priority areas were identified. High-quality data and long-term time series are the basis of any research activity dealing with natural resources analysis. Adequate sampling designs are fundamental to allow a robust statistical analysis to be representative of a relevant set of target variables. In this work, the sampling strategy of ICP-Forests Level II European network has been proposed to define more efficient and cost-effective procedures under the hypothesis that the average value of single-tree growth (increment) is a proxy of forest health. ICP plots have a fixed spatial structure consisting of a square of 50 × 50 m framed into 25 squared sub-plots. To estimate basal area (G) and increase over time (ΔG), two different sub-sampling methods have been implemented based on a measure of (i) the dominant layer only (i.e. a subset of the highest trees in the plot), and (ii) a random sample of squared sub-plots. While the vertical sampling procedure was performed using a progressive threshold, the horizontal sampling followed a bootstrapping procedure with random extraction without replacement. The mean absolute relative error (MARE) was used to evaluate quality of the two sub-sampling methods. Results highlighted a low predictive power with both methodologies, preventing the possibility to reduce the sampling efforts when estimating ΔG directly. In this context, the vertical sampling was strictly related to species-specific ecology, spatial structure and forest age, being influenced by vertical distribution of trees. The use of horizontal sampling for direct ΔG estimation led to systematically high errors. However, the use of horizontal sampling for total G estimation and indirect estimation of ΔG may reveal as a more effective procedure for a coherent representation of horizontal distribution of trees. Estimate ΔG as the difference between G values at time t and t + Δt finally allows for a sensible reduction of costs with a controlled estimation error. Many ecological studies require long-term time series of high quality. Missing data may represent a serious problem since they can affect the reliability of measured variables in specific locations. To which extent and according to which methodology a gap in time series should be filled is a major research challenge. In this study, the time-series of meteorological data relative to 13 monitoring sites from the ICP-Forest network in Italy were analysed with the aim to define the minimum number of site-specific observations, which can be considered adequate for further analysis on forest resource management. Three main climatic variables were taken into account in the analysis: air temperature, relative humidity and total precipitation. By using an increasing proportion of available data, descriptive and inferential statistic methods were applied to evaluate the amount of variability along the period of analysis (1998-2013) and associated error of estimation at seasonal level. The relative importance of each factor accounted in our analysis (season, year, variable, plot, sampling proportion) was investigated fitting a Random Forest model on the results of the bootstrapping procedure. Air temperature was the variable with a marked seasonal profile and the easiest to be represented at monthly level on a specific time period. Humidity and precipitation were more stable across the analysed time period. Trends in precipitation showed that a high amount of variability could be detected only when > 80% of valid observations were available. Humidity showed an intermediate pattern, with an exponential increase in the amount of explained variability when using an increased proportion of sampled observations. Random Forest Regression models indicated sampling proportion (i.e., number of available observations) as an important factor for trend analysis of relative air humidity and precipitation. We conclude that monthly or seasonal statistics can be proficiently estimated for both air temperature and relative humidity with a proportion of missing values higher than 50%. Conversely, a reliable analysis of intra-seasonal or intramonthly precipitation variability requires a much higher amount of observations. In Italy, Douglas-fir has great potential in terms of wood production and drought tolerance. However, a growth reference for mature stands is lacking. We calibrated and validated the Pacific Northwest variant of the Forest Vegetation Simulator (FVS) for Douglas-fir plantations in Italy and then ran the calibrated model to test management alternatives. We calibrated the height-diameter, crown width, crown ratio, and diameter increment submodels of the FVS using multipliers fitted against tree measurements (n = 704) and increment cores (n = 180) from 20 plots. Validation was carried out on tree-level variables sampled in 1996 and 2015 in two independent permanent plots (275 trees). Multiplier calibration improved the error of crown submodels by 7-19%; self-calibration of the diameter growth submodel produced scale factors of 1.0 -5.2 for each site. Validation of 20-year simulations was more satisfactory for tree diameter (-6% to +1% mean percent error) than for height (-10% to +8%). Calibration reduced the error, relative to that of yield tables, of the predicted basal area and yield after 50 years. Simulated responses to thinning diverged, depending on site index and competition intensity. The FVS is a viable option for modeling the yield of Douglas-fir plantations in Italy, reflecting the current understanding of forest ecosystem dynamics and how they respond to management interventions. Regions of provenance of reproductive materials are a mandatory tool for the management of forest genetic resources in Europe. Italian regulation (D. Lgs. 386/2003), in contrast with other European countries, gives this role to regional administrations. Here we present a map of the Regions of Provenance for Abruzzi in central Italy. Three environmental zones were identified according to climatic variability using a spatial clustering procedure and the three main forest species for the region were mapped: European beech (Fagus sylvaticaL.), European black pine (Pinus nigraJ.F. Arnold) and Turkey oak (Quercus cerrisL.). The results show that the main driving factors for clustering are temperature regimes reflecting the contrast between the continental climate of the interior of the region versus the Mediterranean climate on the coast. This effect was also evident in the delineation of the Regions of Provenance for the three main species where elevation plays a key role in the selection of seed stands. • Marginal and peripheral forest populations are key genetic resources. • Expert knowledge on marginality shows subjective perception. • Quantitative indices were developed to identify marginal populations. • The developed indices are applicable to any species whose distribution is known. Marginal and peripheral populations are important for biodiversity conservation. Their original situation in a species' geographic and ecological space often confers them genetic diversity and traits of high adaptive value. Yet theoretical hypotheses related to marginality are difficult to test because of confounding factors that influence marginality, namely environment, geography, and history. There is an urgent need to develop metrics to disentangle these confounding factors. We designed nine quantitative indices of marginality and peripherality that define where margins lie within species distributions, from a geographical, an environmental and a historical perspective. Using the distribution maps of eight European forest tree species, we assessed whether these indices were idiosyncratic or whether they conveyed redundant information. Using a database on marginal and peripheral populations based on expert knowledge, we assessed the capacity of the indices to predict the marginality status of a population. There was no consistent pattern of correlation between indices across species, confirming that the indices conveyed different information related to the specific geometry of the species distributions. Contrasting with this heterogeneity of correlation patterns across species, the relative importance of the indices to predict the marginality status of populations was consistent across species. However, there was still a significant country effect in the marginality status, showing a variation in expert opinion of marginality vis-á-vis the species distribution. The marginality indices that we developed are entirely based on distribution maps and can be used for any species. They pave the way for testing hypotheses related to marginality and peripherality, with important implications in quantitative ecology, genetics, and biodiversity conservation. The aim of this work is investigating the application of the Calcium looping process in cement plants with CO 2 capture. A novel configuration with oxyfuel calciner and a carbonator integrated in the raw meal suspension preheater has been assessed by means of process simulations. The results obtained show a high potential of the proposed process, with equivalent avoided CO 2 emissions (i.e. accounting for credits associated to electric power export) of about 94%, vs. 76% obtained for a competitive oxyfuel cement plant. • The combined effects of calcium carbonate and NPKS fertilizer addition on growth of Populus spp. were assessed based on the results from a field and a pot experiment. • The fertilization effect on poplar growth was strong only if soil conditions in terms of pH and exchangeable Ca were at a sufficiently high level. • Available nutrient concentrations in the soil and foliar nutrient concentrations in the plant suggested co-limitation of poplar growth by N and Ca. • The results of this study emphasize the importance of adapting the level of CaCO 3 to the given soil conditions. The cultivation of Populus spp. on acid soils is difficult mainly due to low nutrient availability, limiting the distribution and use of this marketable tree species. In this paper we report the results of two experiments, in which a granulated highly reactive micronized calcium carbonate (CaCO 3) was tested at increasing levels to improve the effect of NPKS fertilization on poplar growth. Twin field and pot experiments were carried out in 2017 using two different poplar clones, both of which are often used in Italy. In addition to analysing the data from the two experiments separately, common patterns were evaluated using a mixed-effect model with CaCO 3 level and fertilization as fixed effects, and the experiment type as random effect. Growth was assessed in terms of total height, diameter and biomass. Taken together, the results from the two experiments showed that fertilization led to enhanced growth of poplar, but this effect was stronger when soil conditions in terms of pH and exchangeable Ca were at a sufficiently high level. Available nutrient concentrations in the soil and foliar nutrient concentrations in the plant suggested co-limitation of poplar growth by N and Ca. In conclusion, the results of this study on one hand emphasize the importance of adapting the level of CaCO 3 to the given soil conditions, and on the other hand ask for further studies addressing the relative importance of elevated pH and improved Ca nutrition. Abstract: Calcium looping appears as one of the most promising technologies for CO2 capture in short-medium term plants featuring the combustion of fossil fuels. Ca-looping (CaL) is a regenerative process which takes advantage of the capacity of Calcium Oxide-based sorbents in capturing the CO2 from combustion gases by means of sequential carbonation-calcination cycles. CaL technology appears very promising for CO2 capture from cement plants, since the CaO-rich purge stream which must be extracted from the process can be a valuable raw material for clinker production. The aim of this study is to investigate from the technical and economic side the benefits arising from the integration between a coal-fired power plant with CaL process for CO2 capture and a cement plant using the CaL purge to substitute part of the raw meal. The kinetics of the thermal decomposition of a limestone and, simultaneously, of the lime growth have been investigated during isothermal treatments by means of in situ High Temperature X-Ray Powder Diffraction. In particular, four grain sizes of a quarry limestone with differences in terms of mineralogical composition (dolomite content), chemical composition ( Fe and Mg amounts), and texture, have been studied. The lime produced during the isothermal treatments was then examined by using Scanning Electron Microscopy. In all samples, limestone decomposition starts with dolomite dissociation, followed by calcite decomposition. Rather than particle size, limestone texture, and dolomite content seem to be the most important factors controlling the starting temperature of calcination and its kinetic behavior. Biodiversity maintenance is a key strategy for sustainable forestry in both above-ground and below-ground biotic communities. However, few studies applied continuous monitoring to analyse the responses of different taxonomic groups to silvicultural treatments. We studied the short-term effects of three silvicultural treatments (no thinning, thinning from below, and selective thinning) on taxonomic richness and composition in two Pinus nigra J.F. Arnold plantations in Tuscany (Italy). We conducted a 1 year before–3 years after control-impact (BACI) experiment with a complete randomized design and analysed the responses of five different taxonomic groups (bacteria, nematodes, microarthropods, mushrooms and vascular plants (overstorey and understorey), along with the patterns of different structural variables. The silvicultural treatments induced a sudden decrease of many parameters such as number of trees per hectare, basal area, and standing volume, with a direct impact on the Photosynthetic Active Radiation on the ground. Despite this, biological communities showed a high resistance to the tree thinning intensities. Indeed, none of the thinning treatments significantly affected the different communities in the short-term, neither regarding taxonomic richness nor composition. The introduction of Douglas-fir [Pseudotsuga menziesii (Mirb.) Franco] in Europe has been one of the most important and extensive silvicultural experiments since the 1850s. This success was mainly supported by the species' wide genome and phenotypic plasticity even if the genetic origin of seeds used for plantations is nowadays often unknown. This is especially true for all the stands planted before the IUFRO experimentation in the 1960s. In this paper, a methodology to estimate the Douglas-fir provenances currently growing in Italy is proposed. The raw data from the last Italian National Forest Inventory were combined with literature information to obtain the current spatial distribution of the species in the country representing its successful introduction. Afterwards, a random forest classification model was run using downscaled climatic data as predictors and the classification scheme adopted in previous research studies in the Pacific North West of America. The analysis highlighted good matching between the native and the introduction range in Italy. Coastal provenances from British Columbia and the dry coast of Washington were detected as the most likely seed sources, covering 63.4% and 33.8% of the current distribution of the species in the country, respectively. Interior provenances and those from the dry coast of Oregon were also represented but limited to very few cases. The extension of the model on future scenarios predicted a gradual shift in suitable provenances with the dry coast of Oregon in the mid-term (2050s) and afterwards California (2080s) being highlighted as possible new seed sources. However, only further analysis with genetic markers and molecular methods will be able to confirm the proposed scenarios. A validation of the genotypes currently available in Italy will be mandatory as well as their regeneration processes (i.e., adaptation), which may also diverge from those occurring in the native range due to a different environmental pressure. Soil invertebrates represent almost a quarter of the total diversity of living organisms and their activity affects the entire soil ecological process. The choice of adequate thinning systems may differently affect soil nematode and microarthropod biodiversity in artificial black pinewoods. In this work, the results of the impact of different thinnings on the structure of nematode and microarthropod communities was reported. In a short-term experiment, thinning from below and selective thinning were compared to unmanaged stands to provide indications at the regional scale in central Italy. Soil nematode and microarthropod biodiversity was explored by examining community structure, assessing biodiversity. The interaction between environmental variables (crown volume, Photosynthetically Active Radiation, soil texture, soil temperature, and moisture) with taxa abundance of nematodes and microarthropods were also reported. The results indicated that the effects of thinning practices were temporary and varied between years. Soil nematode community shifted during the first and third years of thinning managements only in the Pratomagno site, while soil microarthropod community shifted in both sites only in the second year. The total nematode abundance was minimally affected by thinning practices, while the nematode community composition showed a decrease of omnivores and predators in the first years. Soil indicators showed inconsistent results. In microarthropods, mites and collembola were the least affected by thinning in terms of abundance and species biodiversity, while eu-edaphic taxa of Chilopoda, Diplopoda, and Pauropoda were not influenced by thinning, hemi-edaphic and epi-edaphic taxa of Coleoptera, Diptera, Hymenoptera, Tysanoptera, and Hemiptera were negatively affected. Soil indicators such as Shannon-Weiner and Simpson indices and soil biological quality (QBS-ar) improved in thinning from below in both sites. Soil temperature and moisture were the main driving factors in affecting soil nematode and microarthropods communities. Forests provide a range of ecosystem services essential for human wellbeing. In a changing climate, forest management is expected to play a fundamental role by preserving the functioning of forest ecosystems and enhancing the adaptive processes. Understanding and quantifying the future forest coverage in view of climate changes is therefore crucial in order to develop appropriate forest management strategies. However, the potential impacts of climate change on forest ecosystems remain largely unknown due to the uncertainties lying behind the future prediction of models. To fill this knowledge gap, here we aim to provide an uncertainty assessment of the potential impact of climate change on the forest coverage in Italy using species distribution modelling technique. The spatial distribution of 19 forest tree species in the country was extracted from the last national forest inventory and modelled using nine Species Distribution Models algorithms, six different Global Circulation Models (GCMs), and one Regional Climate Models (RCMs) for 2050s under an intermediate forcing scenario (RCP 4.5). The single species predictions were then compared and used to build a future forest cover map for the country. Overall, no sensible variation in the spatial distribution of the total forested area was predicted with compensatory effects in forest coverage of different tree species, whose magnitude and patters appear largely modulated by the driving climate models. The analyses reported an unchanged amount of total land suitability to forest growth in mountain areas while smaller values were predicted for valleys and floodplains than high-elevation areas. Pure woods were predicted as the most influenced when compared with mixed stands which are characterized by a greater species richness and, therefore, a supposed higher level of biodiversity and resilience to climate change threatens. Pure softwood stands along the Apennines chain in central Italy (e.g., Pinus, Abies) were more sensitive than hardwoods (e.g., Fagus, Quercus) and generally characterized by pure and even-aged planted forests, much further away from their natural structure where admixture with other tree species is more likely. In this context a sustainable forest management strategy may reduce the potential impact of climate change on forest ecosystems. Silvicultural practices should be aimed at increasing the species richness and favoring hardwoods currently growing as dominating species under conifers canopy, stimulating the natural regeneration, gene flow, and supporting (spatial) migration processes. Stem tapers are mathematical functions modelling the relative decrease of diameter (rD) as the relative height (rH) increase in trees and can be successfully used in precision forest harvesting. In this paper, the diameters of the stem at various height of 202 Pinus nigra trees were fully measured by means of an optical relascope (CRITERION RD 1000) by adopting a two-steps non-destructive strategy. Data were modelled with four equations including a linear model, two polynomial functions (second and third order) and the Generalised Additive Model. Predictions were also compared with the output from the TapeR R package, an object-oriented tool implementing the β-Spline functions and widely used in the literature and scientific research. Overall, the high quality of the database was detected as the most important driver for modelling with algorithms almost equivalent each other. The use of a non-destructive sampling method allowed the full measurement of all the trees necessary to build a mathematical function properly. The results clearly highlight the ability of all the tested models to reach a high statistical significance with an adjusted-R squared higher than 0.9. A very low mean relative absolute error was also calculated with a cross validation procedure and small standard deviation were associated. Substantial differences were detected with the TapeR prediction. Indeed, the use of mixed models improved the data handling with outputs not affected by autocorrelation which is one of the main issues when measuring trees profile. The profile data violate one of the basic assumptions of modelling: the independence of sampled units (i.e., autocorrelation of measured values across the stem of a tree). Consequently, the use of simple parametric equations can only be a temporary resource before more complex built-in apps are able to allow basic users to exploit more powerful modelling techniques. Volumetric stability is an important aspect of the performance of building materials, and the shrinkage of CaO-FeOx-Al2O3-SiO2-rich inorganic polymers (IPs) has not been thoroughly investigated yet. Hence, this paper describes the outcome of a study conducted to investigate ways to minimize their shrinkage using different curing regimes. Two different slags were used as case studies to assess the robustness of the developed mitigation strategies. IP pastes and mortars were cured at (i) room condition, (ii) in slightly elevated temperature (60 °C for 2 d) and (iii) in a water-saturated environment. The reaction kinetics and formed products were examined on IP pastes, while mortars were made to characterize the 28 d pore structure, autogenous shrinkage, drying shrinkage, and strength development. The results showed that the precursors' reactivity and curing conditions severely affect shrinkage mechanisms and magnitude. Volumetric changes in the plastic stage can be related to the precursors' reactivity but drying shrinkage was the driving mechanism affecting the volumetric stability of all IP mortars. Understanding the effect of a precursor's composition and curing conditions on shrinkage is fundamental to develop proper mitigation strategies and to overcome one of IPs' main technical drawbacks. Species Distribution Modelling (SDM) techniques were originally developed in the mid-1980s. In this century they are gaining increasing attention in the literature and in practical use as a powerful tool to support forest management strategies especially under climate change. In this review paper we consider species occurrence datasets, climatic and soil predictor variables, modelling algorithms, evaluation methods and widely used software for SDM studies. We describe several important and freely available sources for species occurrence and interpolated climatic data. We outline the use of both presence-only and presence/absence modelling algorithms including distance-based algorithms, machine learning algorithms and regression-based models. We conclude that SDM techniques provide a valuable asset for forest managers. However, it is essential to consider uncertainties behind the use of future climate change scenarios. The European beech (Fagus sylvatica L.) is a widely distributed tree species across Europe, highly sensitive to climate change and global warming. This study illustrates results of a 5-year monitoring time period from eight sites of the ICP-Forests Level II (intensive monitoring network) along the Italian latitudinal gradient. The tree-level relationship between tree growth dynamics and environmental factors, including seasonal climate fluctuations were investigated by means of tree-level Generalized Additive Mixed Models (GAMMs). Model results revealed that climate was responsible for just a portion of the variability in beech growth dynamics. Even if climatic predictors were highly significant in almost all sites, the model explained nearly 30% of the total variance (with just a maximum value of 71.6%), leaving the remaining variance unexplained and likely connected with forest management trajectories applied to each site (e.g., aged coppice and fully grown high forest). Climate change scenarios were then applied to predict site-specific future responses. By applying climate change scenarios, it was predicted that central and northern Italy would face similar climatic conditions to those currently detected at southern latitudes. WorldClim version 1 is a high-resolution, global climate gridded dataset covering 1961–1990; a "normal" climate. It has been widely used for ecological studies thanks to its free availability and global coverage. This study aims to evaluate the quality of WorldClim data by quantifying any discrepancies by comparison with an independent dataset of measured temperature and precipitation records across Europe. BIO1 (mean annual temperature, MAT) and BIO12 (mean total annual precipitation, MAP) were used as proxies to evaluate the spatial accuracy of the WorldClim grids. While good representativeness was detected for MAT, the study demonstrated a bias with respect to MAP. The average difference between WorldClim predictions and climate observations was around +0.2 °C for MAT and −48.7 mm for MAP, with large variability. The regression analysis revealed a good correlation and adequate proportion of explained variance for MAT (adjusted R2 = 0.856) but results for MAP were poor, with just 64% of the variance explained (adjusted R2 = 0.642). Moreover no spatial structure was found across Europe, nor any statistical relationship with elevation, latitude, or longitude, the environmental predictors used to generate climate surfaces. A detectable spatial autocorrelation was only detectable for the two most thoroughly sampled countries (Germany and Sweden). Although further adjustments might be evaluated by means of geostatistical methods (i.e., kriging), the huge environmental variability of the European environment deeply stressed the WorldClim database. Overall, these results show the importance of an adequate spatial structure of meteorological stations as fundamental to improve the reliability of climate surfaces and derived products of the research (i.e., statistical models, future projections). Socioeconomic conditions and land management choices combine to affect changes in long-term wildfire regimes in Mediterranean-type ecosystems. Identification of specific drivers and dynamics at the local level is needed to inform land resource planning and to enhance wildfire management efficiency. Therefore, investigating feedback relationships between wildfire and socioeconomic conditions at local and regional scales can reveal consistency in spatial and temporal patterns influencing wildfire frequency, intensity, and severity. This study assessed long-term wildfire characteristics in Greece—one of the most fire-prone countries in Europe—over two consecutive time periods characterized by economic expansion (2000–2007) and recession (2008–2015). An integrated, multivariate statistical approach was implemented to assess the latent relationship between socioeconomic forces and localized wildfire regime indicators. Changes in the number of fires at the wildland–urban interface and duration of wildfires were consistent with expectations. Observed changes in the size of fires showed mixed results. Empirical findings of this study indicate analysis of wildfire regimes that takes into account both the socioeconomic and environmental factors in the overall territorial context of Mediterranean-type ecosystems, at both regional and local scale, may prove informative for the design of wildfire prevention measures in Greece. Landscape fragmentation typical of the Mediterranean region is the result of long-term settlement history and continuous socioeconomic interactions among countries. In complex agro-ecosystems of the Mediterranean basin, formulation of practical guidelines aimed at counteract soil and land degradation, water depletion, rural area depopulation, and the loss of agricultural knowledge is imperative. Based on a multidisciplinary, integrated approach, the present contribution discusses the role of traditional agricultural systems in ecosystem services provision, considering together economic sustainability and the medium-term ecological benefits. A permanent monitoring of rural areas specialized in traditional crop production such as olive and vine may support optimal selection of cultivars finely adapted to a warm climate. A competitive agricultural system may consider human well-being, social equity, and conservation of natural resources, to ensure a high level of services for current and future generations. Recovery and conservation of agricultural resources provide positive externalities and social benefits at both local and regional levels. Aimed at reducing structural homogeneity and symmetrical competition in even-aged forest stands and enhancing stand structure diversity, the present study contributes to the design and implementation of adaptive silvicultural practices with two objectives: (1) preserving high wood production rates under changing environmental conditions and (2) ensuring key ecological services including carbon sequestration and forest health and vitality over extended stand life-spans. Based on a quantitative analysis of selected stand structure indicators, the experimental design was aimed at comparing customary practices of thinning from below over the full standing crop and innovative practices of crown thinning or selective thinning releasing a pre-fixed number of best phenotypes and removing direct crown competitors. Experimental trials were established at four beech forests along a latitudinal gradient in Italy: Cansiglio, Veneto; Vallombrosa, Tuscany; Chiarano, Abruzzo; and Marchesale, Calabria). Empirical results indicate a higher harvesting rate is associated with innovative practices compared with traditional thinning. A multivariate discriminant analysis outlined significant differences in post-treatment stand structure, highlighting the differential role of structural and functional variables across the study sites. These findings clarify the impact of former forest structure in shaping post-treatment stand attributes. Monitoring standing crop variables before and after thinning provides a basic understanding to verify intensity and direction of the applied manipulation, the progress toward the economic and ecological goals, as well as possible failures or need for adjustments within a comprehensive strategy of adaptive forest management.
