Abstract

Pathogenic fungi that cause defoliation in different pine species, including Pinus patula, have been reported. The most common practice for controlling these pathogens is the use of fungicides, which have adverse environmental consequences. The objective of this study was to evaluate an alternative for pathogen control without affecting the ecosystem. Bacteria with antifungal activity obtained from forest soil were isolated and biochemically and molecularly identified for evaluation in biocontrol assays of fungi associated with defoliation under laboratory and field conditions. Two species of the genus Serratia, Serratia grimesii and S. proteamaculans, were identified as bacteria with antifungal activity. In vitro biocontrol was achieved by reducing the mycelium growth of fungi associated with diseased needles of P. patula: Alternaria alternata, Annulohypoxylon stygium, Botryosphaeria dothidea, Curvularia lunata, C. pseudobrachyspora, C. spicifera, C. trifolii, Daldinia sp., Daldinia eschscholtzii, Diplodia sapinea, Lophodermium indianum, and Myrmaecium rubricosum. The fungi in P. patula (Annulohypoxylon stygium and Daldinia eschscholtzii) decreased their damage by 82% and 77%, respectively, in the presence of Serratia under humid chamber conditions. In addition, the incidence of lesions (IL) and Disease Severity Index (% D S I) were significantly reduced under natural conditions. Abstract

We investigated the physiological responses of two epiphytic orchids under three light regimes of 20, 50, and 70% of total daily radiation under drought and rewatering conditions. Stanhopea tigrina was the one more affected because it exhibited strong photoinhibition and reduction of both electron transport rate and nocturnal acidity under drought and high radiation. However, this species maintained relatively high relative water content (RWC) values and underwent osmotic adjustment during the drought period and recovered photosynthetic variables during watered period. Prosthechea cochleata maintained similar water and photosynthetic responses to light conditions during the drought period and was more tolerant than S. tigrina. Principal component analysis provided evidence that water variables, such as RWC and succulence of both leaf and pseudobulb, were the most important variables for both species. Our results suggest that S. tigrina is more sensitive to drought than P. cochleata, and could be more affected by global warming. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

Abstract

In 2010, the CIE published a recommended system for mesopic photometry based on visual performance. According to this system, scenes illuminated at mesopic levels with light sources of high S/P ratio, will produce better visual performance than those illuminated with light sources of a lower S/P ratio at equal photopic luminance. However, there could be other factors affected by SPD that, when quantified, could lead to a contradictory final effect. The scope of this paper was to evaluate how road lighting is affected by the spectral road surface reflectance and by the human eye transmittance as people get older. Our results suggest that the benefits of considering the mesopic vision effect for light sources with high S/P ratios are totally counteracted by the other two effects at mesopic luminances between 0.75 cd/m2 and 1.73 cd/m2 for people between 20 and 60 years of age, depending on the light source and the age of observers. Abstract

Cadastre is essential for the sustainable development of modern society. As well, mapping and surveying is one of the most important tasks for surveyors worldwide in order to maintain the Cadastre. This article summarises a recent study conducted by the authors on overall student assessment of learning Cadastre and Remote Sensing. The goal is to highlight which teaching method has better success rate for students. This paper studies the academic outcomes for a total of 286 students divided into two optional courses of Cadastre at higher education for eight academic years. They are analysed through three different educational modalities: face-to-face (FTF), blended and online for one course, and FTF and online for another. In order to deepen the analysis, a model using classification trees (Classification and regression trees, CART) was created. It has been observed that the blended modality is the one that offers worst results in terms of success rate. If we compare exclusively the FTF method to the online one, we can conclude that the latter shows better results in all respects, improving the success rate and increasing the percentage of students who obtain highest marks. Abstract

Background: Epidemiological evidence suggests a cardioprotective role of α‐linolenic acid (ALA), a plant‐derived ω‐3 fatty acid. It is unclear whether ALA is beneficial in a background of high marine ω‐3 fatty acids (long‐chain n‐3 polyunsaturated fatty acids) intake. In persons at high cardiovascular risk from Spain, a country in which fish consumption is customarily high, we investigated whether meeting the International Society for the Study of Fatty Acids and Lipids recommendation for dietary ALA (0.7% of total energy) at baseline was related to all‐cause and cardiovascular disease mortality. We also examined the effect of meeting the society's recommendation for long‐chain n‐3 polyunsaturated fatty acids (≥500 mg/day). Methods and Results: We longitudinally evaluated 7202 participants in the PREvención con DIeta MEDiterránea (PREDIMED) trial. Multivariable‐adjusted Cox regression models were fitted to estimate hazard ratios. ALA intake correlated to walnut consumption (r=0.94). During a 5.9‐y follow‐up, 431 deaths occurred (104 cardiovascular disease, 55 coronary heart disease, 32 sudden cardiac death, 25 stroke). The hazard ratios for meeting ALA recommendation (n=1615, 22.4%) were 0.72 (95% CI 0.56–0.92) for all‐cause mortality and 0.95 (95% CI 0.58–1.57) for fatal cardiovascular disease. The hazard ratios for meeting the recommendation for long‐chain n‐3 polyunsaturated fatty acids (n=5452, 75.7%) were 0.84 (95% CI 0.67–1.05) for all‐cause mortality, 0.61 (95% CI 0.39–0.96) for fatal cardiovascular disease, 0.54 (95% CI 0.29–0.99) for fatal coronary heart disease, and 0.49 (95% CI 0.22–1.01) for sudden cardiac death. The highest reduction in all‐cause mortality occurred in participants meeting both recommendations (hazard ratio 0.63 [95% CI 0.45–0.87]). Conclusions: In participants without prior cardiovascular disease and high fish consumption, dietary ALA, supplied mainly by walnuts and olive oil, relates inversely to all‐cause mortality, whereas protection from cardiac mortality is limited to fish‐derived long‐chain n‐3 polyunsaturated fatty acids. Abstract

Abstract: This work presents a preliminary study on the ageing process of proteinaceous binder materials used in painting under UV light. With this aim, two sets of model samples were prepared: samples prepared using a single protein material and complex samples prepared in a similar way to the sequence of layers in a real painting from lowest to highest complexity (protein, drying oils, pigment and varnish). The study focuses on acquiring information about the possible degradation process of proteinaceous binders due to ageing and how this process be affected by the presence of characteristic non-proteinaceous painting materials, such as lipids from linseed oil, terpenic compounds from varnish and inorganic pigments. Samples simulated the accelerated ageing process, as did the UV light exposition. The FT-IR spectra were recorded after 100, 500, 1000 and 1500h of exposition. The study of the accelerated ageing process was performed by means of principal component analysis (PCA) using the FT-IR spectra obtained. Loadings from the significant principal components were analysed to find the FT-IR frequency (cm−1) involved in the degradation process. The study showed the lack of any relevant modification on the proteins in the single model samples. On the contrary, the complex model samples showed the ageing process. The accelerated ageing process can be explained by a principal component from PCA. The most affected IR region was 2900–3600cm−1, where the amide band was included. [Copyright &y& Elsevier]

Abstract

Abstract: In this paper, we performed a comparison between commonly used strategies amino acid ratios (Aa ratios), two-dimensional ratio plots (2D-Plot) and statistical correlation factor (SCF) and a classification technique, soft independent modelling of class analogy (SIMCA), to identify protein binders present in old artwork samples. To do this, we used a natural standard collection of proteinaceous binders prepared in our laboratory using old recipes and eleven samples coming from Cultural Heritage, such as mural and easel paintings, manuscripts and polychrome sculptures from the 15–18th centuries. Protein binder samples were hydrolyzed and their constitutive amino acids were determined as PITC-derivatives using HPLC-DAD. Amino acid profile data were used to perform the comparison between the four different strategies mentioned above. Traditional strategies can lead to ambiguous or non-conclusive results. With SIMCA, it is possible to provide a more robust and less subjective identification knowing the confidence level of identification. As a standard, we used proteinaceous albumin (whole egg, yolk and glair); casein (goat, cow and sheep) and collagen (mammalian and fish). The process results in a more robust understanding of proteinaceous binding media in old artworks that makes it possible to distinguish them according to their origin. [Copyright &y& Elsevier]

Abstract

This paper shows that a multivariate exponential power distribution is a scale mixture of normal distributions, with respect to a probability distribution function, when its kurtosis parameter belongs to the interval (0, 1]. The corresponding mixing probability distribution function is presented. This result is used to design, through a Bayesian hierarchical model, an algorithm to generate samples of the posterior distribution; this is applied to a problem of quantitative genetics.
